Democratic Party leadership is telling Californians to vote "no" on the question of whether to Governor Gavin Newsom. But there's a second question on the ballot: If a majority of Californians vote "yes," who should replace him? Democratic leaders have advised voters to leave the second question blank. But hasn't the New York mayoral race taught the left that it should consolidate early around progressive alternative? As we discussed last week, the leading contender to replace Newsom is conservative talk show host Larry Elder -- not a guy you want in charge of the environment, COVID management, or, well, anything. But because the Democratic Party is hedging all bets on Newsom, there hasn't been much guidance about who the best left candidates in the race really are. The liberal media, unsurprisingly, has been silent about the progressive candidates in the race. Unfortunately, left media hasn't been any better. That's why this week, Brie spoke to a panel of three leading left candidates: Green Party candidate & criminal defense attorney Dan Kapelovitz, Socialist Equality Party candidate David Moore, and California National Party candidate and political science lecturer at San Francisco State, Michael Loebs. This conversation is as much about their individual candidacies as is is about their respective parties' theories of change. Everyone here may agree on the need for Medicare for All, but a non-Marxist professor of Marxism cum successionist, a Trotskyite, and a Green Party member each have very different theories of how to get there. It's an edifying conversation that interrogates the likelihood that a President Gavin Newsom will bring us Medicare for All, questions the value of "pushing" Democratic politicians who will always serve capital, and asks: should California just go it alone? I also ask the panelists why they haven't managed to consolidate around one left candidate with two weeks left until election day. I have once again been deleted by the almighty social media platform Facebook. Again, I have no idea why.  This will be the second time in less than 10 days.  There's seems to have been a purging of left wing pages and people.  This is from the World Wide Socialist Website:   On Friday, Facebook carried out a purge of left-wing, antiwar and progressive pages and accounts, including leading members of the Socialist Equality Party. Facebook gave no explanation why the accounts were disabled or even a public acknowledgement that the deletions had occurred   At least a half dozen leading members of the Socialist Equality Party had their Facebook accounts permanently disabled. This included the public account of Genevieve Leigh, the national secretary of the International Youth and Students for Social Equality, and the personal account of Niles Niemuth, the US managing editor of the World Socialist Web Site. In 2016, Niemuth was the Socialist Equality Party's candidate for US Vice President. Facebook also disabled the London Bus Drivers Rank-and-File Committee Facebook page, which was set up with the support of the Socialist Equality Party (UK) to organize opposition among bus drivers. This follows a widely discussed call for a walkout by bus drivers to demand elementary protections against the COVID-19 pandemic.   Read the entire article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2021/01/23/pers-j23.html   This particular episode was recorded after my 1st deletion from Facebook, and before my livestream co-host Pascal Robert was subsequently deleted by Facebook as well.     You can hear Conan's podcast Protonic Reversal here: https://www.protonicreversal.com/   You can hear Conan's critically acclaimed band, Conan Neutron & the Secret Friends Here: https://neutronfriends.bandcamp.com/ (He's got some limited edition vinyl people!)   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out.  We appreciate each and everyone of you.  If you have the means, and you feel so inclined, BECOME A PATRON! There’s a new Labour Candidate in Town. After more than thirty years as MP for Holborn and St Pancras, Frank Dobson is standing down and the party has chosen Sir Keir Starmer to fight the seat. He’s a Barrister, specialising in Human Rights issues and was Director of Public Prosecutions for five years before leaving the post in 2013. Camden Community Radio caught up with him at Labour’s local office where he spoke about tackling the constituency’s problems, lowering the voting age and how he doesn’t like being called SIR Keir – “It’s Keir” he insists. Our reporter, Ann Carroll, began by asking him what he feels he brings to Camden. Next year’s General Election will mark a watershed for Camden as the long serving Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras, Frank Dobson, will be retiring. His party have yet to announce who will take his place as candidate, but the Conservative Party have chosen theirs. Will Blair is already busy campaigning while holding down a full time job. He took time out of his schedule to come into our studio and talked to Ann Carroll about his fondness for Camden, his background, handling social media and the threat from Ukip. The political profile of the Green Party has been rising sharply, not least in Camden where its Leader, Natalie Bennett, is standing as a prospective parliamentary candidate in Holborn and St Pancras. The constituency is on the Green’s list of its top 12 targets and Natalie Bennett says she’s going all out to win it.
