The Iron Fist and The Velvet Glove is a weekly podcast which takes a look at news, political events, culture, ethics and the transformations taking place in our society. We try to look at news events and examine whether they are good or bad, whether they are part of a larger trend, what social forces are at work and what are the implications for our future. A typical episode is an eclectic mix of serious ideas and amusing stories. We might well be cataloguing the demise of civilisation but we try to have fun while doing so. We are Australian so we include a lot of Australian stories but Australia is a small fish in a big pond and we consequently look at a lot of international events which are relevant to everyone. We hope you enjoy the podcast.

This episode delves into the complex and often misunderstood events surrounding the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, challenging the widely accepted narrative of a brutal massacre. Trevor examines various reports and perspectives, revealing that while violence occurred in Beijing, the narrative of thousands of students being killed in the square itself may be significantly exaggerated or even fabricated. He discusses the involvement of American foreign policy and intelligence agencies in the protests, suggesting that the movement was not solely a spontaneous call for democracy but rather influenced by external forces seeking regime change in China. Through a careful review of testimonials, journalistic accounts, and historical context, Trevor aims to shed light on the realities of what transpired, emphasizing that the tragedy in Tiananmen Square was not as straightforward as often portrayed. As he explores these themes, he invites listeners to reconsider their views on the incident and its implications for understanding modern China. To financially support the Podcast you can make:a per-episode donation via Patreon or one-off donation via credit card; orone-off or regular donations via Paypal orif you are into Cryptocurrency you can send Satoshis. There was a problem with the audio in episode 423 which has been fixed. If you downloaded the first version you probably couldn't hear Joe properly and this episode 423a is for you. If you are late to the party and downloaded episode 423 after 2:45pm on Tuesday the 9th then you have probably downloaded the better audio which is exactly the same as this episode 423a. Hope that makes sense.Topics:00:00 Welcome to the Iron Fist and the Velvet Glove Podcast00:43 Introductions and Absences: The Hosts of Today's Episode01:12 A Week Off and the Energy to Podcast01:25 Engaging with the Audience: Chat Room Interactions01:41 Tonight's Packed Agenda: From Crime Rates to Real Estate03:34 Personal Anecdotes: Crime Rates and Misconceptions08:09 Exploring the World of Yannis Varoufakis11:30 Max Chandler Mather and the Housing Crisis Debate15:12 The Greens' Influence and Future Prospects16:49 Australia's Left Populism and Housing Policy Critique20:53 The Murdoch Press and Public Opinion22:43 Developers, Land Banks, and Housing Supply33:49 Religious Organizations and Taxation: A Green Perspective38:37 The Australian Law Reform Commission Report on Religious Discrimination45:38 Donald Trump, North Korea, and Easter Messages50:27 A Satirical Take on Comparing to Jesus52:19 The Art of Impersonation and Levity52:43 Political Commentary: Trump's Potential Victory57:09 A Deep Dive into Climate Change Denial01:03:45 The Controversial New Immigration Laws01:09:09 Global Shifts: The Changing World Order01:19:19 The TikTok Ban Debate in Australia01:27:08 Global South Pushes Back01:33:11 Wrapping Up and Looking AheadTo financially support the Podcast you can make:a per-episode donation via Patreon or one-off donation via credit card; orone-off or regular donations via Paypal orif you are into Cryptocurrency you can send Satoshis.
