Zubná klinika, ktorú založil otec Petra Džupu, nedávno oslávila 30 rokov. Rodinná firma si okrúhle jubileum pripomenula nezvyčajným spôsobom. Pre Kysučanov pripravili celodenný Festival zdravia s odborníkmi, prednáškami o zdraví a prevencii, cvičením aj zábavou pre deti i dospelých.O rok túto akciu zopakovali a na leto chystajú tretí ročník. „Rozhodli sme sa spraviť niečo pre komunitu. Tu sme vyrástli, v tejto komunite pracujeme a podnikáme, tu sú naši klienti, pacienti, kolegovia aj bývalí kolegovia,“ vysvetľuje Peter Džupa motiváciu aj dôvody, prečo založili občianske združenie Zdravé Kysuce a budujú tradíciu festivalu.V podcaste sa dozviete:· ako podľa Petra Džupu súvisí pomáhanie so Spidermanom,· čím ho inšpiruje japonská firemná kultúra,· prečo sa mu páči film Pošli to ďalej,· kto má v rodinnej firme konečné slovo pri rozhodovaní o pomoci,· ako sa filantropia na Kysuciach prejavuje v biznise.Dlhoročná spolupráca kliniky s pobočkou Diecéznej charity v Čadci je založená na dôvere. Klienti charity v zložitých životných situáciách zvyčajne nemajú peniaze na zubné ošetrenie. „Keď nám zavolajú, nepýtam sa, či to ten človek potrebuje. Viem, že je to naozaj treba,“ vraví spolumajiteľ kliniky.Ani po zorganizovaní Festivalu zdravia sa nezamýšľal nad tým, či práve toto je filantropia. Hovorí skôr o zodpovednosti: „Nie sme veľká firma, ale máme vplyv na životy ľudí, ktorí u nás pracujú, tým pádom máme vplyv na životy ich rodín a aj na komunitu. Nevieme ovplyvniť celú spoločnosť, ale keď sa budeme snažiť 30 až 40 rokov, možno vieme spraviť v našom meste aspoň malú zmenu.“Generačná výmena prináša iné pohľadyZakladateľ kliniky, Peter Džupa st., sa stiahol z vedenia firmy a viac sa venuje vzdelávaniu študentov na strednej a vysokej škole. Medzi podnikateľskými príbehmi otca a syna sú, prirodzene, rozdiely. Prvá generácia začínala podnikať v 90. rokoch v úplne iných podmienkach ako dnes.„Druhá generácia prichádza s tým, že niečo je už vybudované a zároveň si uvedomuje, že len budovať majetok nestačí, keď nemáme napríklad fungujúce školstvo alebo ľudia nemajú kam ísť za kultúrou,“ hovorí P. Džupa. Ako správny vizionár vie, že od toho, ako sú ľudia vzdelaní a rozhľadení, závisí kvalita života v komunitách a v konečnom dôsledku aj ich podnikanie.Aj preto má ďalšie plány. Osvetu a vzdelávanie v oblasti zdravia chce v Čadci rozšíriť o komunitnú kaviareň, kde by vznikol aj priestor na besedy či prednášky o rôznych témach. „Môže to ľuďom rozšíriť obzory, dokáže ich to prepájať. A práve spájanie rôznych komunít je niečo, čo dnes na Slovensku chýba,“ dodáva.Kto je Peter ĎžupaPo štúdiu na lekárskej fakulte nastúpil do zubnej kliniky Petramed v Čadci. Viac než päť rokov ju viedol ako výkonný riaditeľ. V súčasnosti sa ako stratég venuje najmä jej rozvoju. Okrem toho organizuje kurzy pre zubných lekárov s vlastnou praxou, ktoré sú zamerané na manažment, financie, legislatívu. Happy New Year and welcome to the final episode of season four (4)! We're wrapping up the season with a conversation featuring the incredible Peter D. Cook, FAIA, NOMA. In this episode, we talk about his remarkable lineage, his role in shaping DC's architectural landscape, and his work at The Contemplative Site at Monticello. We also discuss the importance of community engagement, the challenges architecture students face, and his contributions to DC's public spaces, including libraries. It's the perfect close to a long season. Peter D. Cook, FAIA, NOMA is a Design Principal and Vice President with HGA, a position he has held since joining the firm in 2017. A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, he is a nationally recognized architect based in Washington DC with a portfolio of award-winning art, community and educational projects demonstrating versatility with a variety of sites, typologies and scales. Common among them is his approach that values the establishment of a strong, personal connection with client and stakeholders, the result of deep listening and empathy. A direct descendant of Julian F. Abele (1881-1950), one of the nation's most celebrated and accomplished African-American architects, Peter served as one of the three lead design collaborators for the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture. Peter was appointed in 2021 by President Joseph Biden to serve as a member of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and was elevated in 2022 as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He has also served for over 20 years as a Peer for the U.S. General Services Administration Design Excellence program. Peter continues to be engaged with many community-based institutions including serving on the Board of Directors at the Washington Architectural Foundation, the Board of Trustees at the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, and as a past Vice President of the National Organization of Minority Architects.

Wenn heute von „Nachhaltigkeit“ die Rede ist, dann dominiert oft das Ökonomische. So als könnten wir uns Ökologie oder soziale und kulturelle Belange erst dann „leisten“, wenn „die Zahlen“ stimmen. Was aber würde es bedeuten, Nachhaltigkeit radikal von der Natur her zu denken? Von der Tatsache, dass wir Menschen Teil der Natur sind und als Naturwesen unhintergehbar eingebettet und eingebunden sind in Naturzusammenhänge. Dieser Frage ist der vor 10 Jahren verstorbene Physiker Hans-Peter Dürr immer wieder in seinen Schriften und Vorträgen nachgegangen. Der Schüler und Nachfolger des Physik-Nobelpreisträgers Werner Heisenberg war ein vielbeachteter Vordenker und Wegbereiter der weltweiten Ökologie- und Friedensbewegung. Er übersetzt den eher spröden Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit in die Aufforderung an uns Menschen, all unser Tun und Lassen daran auszurichten, die Natur und das Lebende lebendiger werden zu lassen. Nur so handeln wir dann auch – nachhaltig.

Trump streute die Lüge des grossen Wahlbetrugs, an die heute noch rund 30 Prozent der Republikanerinnen und Republikaner glauben. Wenige Monate vor den Wahlen sind die USA zerrissen wie nie seit dem Bürgerkrieg. Das dokumentieren die «Club»-Moderatoren Barbara Lüthi und Peter Düggeli bei ihrer Reise von der Ost- an die Westküste. Doch auch in diesem Wahljahr bestehen die USA nicht nur aus Bruch- und Baustellen. In Gesprächen mit Menschen aus allen Schichten, Reich und Arm, Jung und Alt, Republikanerinnen und Demokraten suchen die beiden Reporter auch nach den Zwischentönen. Und sie finden nicht nur Trennlinien, sondern auch einen Gemeinschaftssinn. Wie geht es den Amerikanerinnen und Amerikanern wirklich, fernab polarisierender Schlagzeilen und spaltender Rhetorik? Und sind sie bereit, ihre Staatsform zu verteidigen, oder ist die Demokratie im mächtigsten Land der Welt in Gefahr? Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia. Drei US-Staaten, die lange florierten und dann in tiefe Depressionen fielen. Staaten, die sich von der billigen Konkurrenz der sich globalisierenden Weltwirtschaft bis heute nicht erholt haben. Die Menschen, die in Autofabriken, Stahlwerken und Kohleminen einst das Rückgrat der amerikanischen Wirtschaft bildeten, fühlen sich im Stich gelassen. Und in der wirtschaftlichen Misere sehen viele Donald Trump als ihren Heilsbringer. Das Narrativ der Region ist gemacht: Armut, Verlust von Arbeitsplätzen, Entvölkerung. Doch es gibt auch andere Geschichten. «Club» besucht Städte, die sich neu erfinden, und sprechen mit Arbeitern und Gewerkschaftsvertretenden, die sich nach der Decke strecken, um wieder aufzustehen. So auch in West Virginia, wo die Menschen trotz einer massiven Opioid-Epidemie über die Parteigrenzen hinaus für ihre Gemeinschaft kämpfen.

Kurz und bündig, interessant und informativ. Aber auch tröstlich und gelegentlich anstößig. Bunt wie das Leben sollen auch die Formen der christlichen Botschaft im Sender sein. Von Peter Dückers.

How abstract design decisions in 2D platform games create rich worlds of meaning for players. Since the 1980s, 2D platform games have captivated their audiences. Whether the player scrambles up the ladders in Donkey Kong or leaps atop an impossibly tall pipe in Super Mario Bros., this deceptively simple visual language has persisted in our cultural imagination of video games. In Run and Jump: The Meaning of the 2D Platformer (MIT Press, 2024), Peter McDonald surveys the legacy of 2D platform games and examines how abstract and formal design choices have kept players playing. McDonald argues that there is a rich layer of meaning underneath, say, the quality of an avatar's movement, the pacing and rhythm of level design, the personalities expressed by different enemies, and the emotion elicited by collecting a coin. To understand these games, McDonald draws on technical discussions by game designers as well as theoretical work about the nature of signs from structuralist semiotics. Interspersed throughout are design exercises that show how critical interpretation can become a tool for game designers to communicate with their players. Sam is off today, but in honor of Indigenous People's Day he spoke with Peter D'Errico, professor emeritus of legal studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst,  about his recent book Federal Anti-Indian Law: The Legal Entrapment of Indigenous Peoples. But first, Emma spoke with Orly Noy, editor at Local Call and chair of B'Tselem's executive board, to discuss the recent fighting between Palestine and Israel.  Emma also walked through on the UAW's labor action, Donald Trump's assessment of RFK, a devastating earthquake in Afghanistan, and Gavin Newsom's regressive veto campaign, before stepping back to look at the role of Israel's ongoing apartheid state and Bibi Netanyahu's genocidal government in pushing this conflict to its breaking point. Orly joins the show from Jerusalem, as she updates Emma on the state of war within Israel and Palestine, even as far from the primary conflict as Jerusalem is. Next, Noy parses through Bibi Netanyahu's response as a perfect encapsulation of his political agenda, completely committing his power to punishing Gaza and Palestine, and shoring up his own political station. Expanding on this, Noy walks through the failure of the Israeli government to even provide safety for Israelis, dedicating their forces to a genocidal response and leaving civilian safety to civilian organizers, before she and Emma step back and assess the evolution of Netanyahu's approach (or lack thereof) to Palestine, pulling every maneuver to bypass them politically, while maintaining a strict and severe military occupation. Wrapping up, Noy assesses Hamas' outcast role in Palestinian politics and military resistance, and why ground invasion would be an incredibly dangerous development for the already criminally fragile open-air prison that is Gaza. Professor D'Errico then walks through the evolution of the doctrines of settler colonialism in what is now the United States, with the doctrine of Christian discovery that launched the colonial era from Spain and England setting the stage for the US' own domestic justification for the “manifest destiny” agenda. Expanding on this, D'Errico and Sam explore the central cases in the establishment of Chief Justice John Marshall's ‘Marshall Doctrine' in Indian Law, which actively committed to the perspective of Christian dominion and discovery, and asserted the native peoples as a sub-human class unable to look after their land. Next, they look to the post-Marshall evolution of the doctrine, with the Court carrying its vision forward while slowly obscuring its origins, seeing it affirmatively cited even by supposedly progressive justices like RBH, without reference to Christianity. After expanding on the Marshall Doctrine's secondary purpose as a reinforcement of federal domination over the states, D'Errico wraps up by walking through the contemporary battles over the Marshall Doctrine, the push for full assimilation of Native territories, and the need to bring the origins of the doctrine back into full public view.
