Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened down 301-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 22,991 on turnover of $7-billion N-T. Shares in Taiwan surged more than 300 points Tuesday, with buying sparked by a rally on U.S. markets overnight. The bellwether electronics sector led the gains with artificial intelligence related stocks in focus. Investors took their cue from robust AI chip designer Nvidia Corp. Monday to pick up large cap stocks, including contract chipmaker TSMC, to vault the main board over the 23,200 point mark. Taiwan's food self-sufficiency rate drops to 30.3% Taiwan's food self-sufficiency rate in 2023 dropped to 30.3 percent… that's the lowest figure in 18 years. The Ministry of Agriculture's latest Food Supply & Utilization (使用率) Annual Report represents a drop from 30.8 percent in 2022 and 33 percent in 2013. Its lowest recorded rate was at 30.2 percent rate in 2005. The MOA pointed to a decrease in the domestic production of rice, which is the largest single source of calories in Taiwan…. and THAT was partly caused by a drought which took place in 2023. The MOA also reported a drop in the amount of meat raised domestically in Taiwan. That decline was driven by factors that included avian flu and the modernization of pork-rearing facilities, which reduced production and led to a greater reliance on imports. UK Sanctions “Extremist Israeli Settlers” The UK has announced new sanctions targeting "extremist Israeli settlers". The sanctions also target (把……作為目標) organisations the UK government says have supported violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Simon Gaitan reports. UN Warning on Natural Disasters in Asia Pacific A U.N. official says disasters, including those wrought by fiercer storms, are threatening more people and could derail economic progress in the Asia Pacific region. U.N. Assistant Secretary-General Kamal Kishore, who heads the U.N. Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, issued the warning Tuesday in a speech at the start of a regional ministerial conference on disaster mitigation hosted by the Philippines, one of the world's most disaster-prone countries. He said “disasters are now affecting record numbers of people and threatening their lives and livelihoods.” He added that if left unchecked (未被制止的), these disasters could endanger the development of the region. Kishore said Asia Pacific countries should regularly dedicate funds in their national budgets for the reduction of disaster risk, and should allocate a larger proportion of foreign development aid to disaster prevention and “not simply response.” Egypt Museum Opening for Trial Run The long-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum will partially open its main galleries today, showcasing 12 halls that exhibit aspects of ancient Egypt. More than 100-thousand of Egypt's ancient treasures will be displayed in the world's largest archaeological museum. It is near the Giza Pyramids and will open the halls for 4,000 visitors a day as a trial run until the official opening date, which is yet to be announced. The museum has been under construction for more than a decade and has cost well over $1 billion so far. Its opening has been repeatedly delayed for various (各種各樣的) reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic. That was the I.C.R.T. Dr. Shweta Kishore and Dr Kunal Ray's Resistance in Indian Documentary Film: Aesthetics, Culture and Practice (Edinburgh UP, 2024) is a unique collection of essays on documentary cinema and practice that brings together multiple modes of scholarly, reflective and autoethnographic writing on documentary by scholars and creative practitioners. It takes a holistic view of documentary culture as a field comprising not only films but practices such as circulation, curation, criticism, and education, that come together to create a particular ecology of resistance. Resistance is conceptualised as a multidimensional phenomenon comprising both documentary representation as well as practices and tangible actions through which people mobilize and adapt documentary for local, community and individual functions. Dr Kunal Ray is a writer and academic. He teaches literature and film at FLAME University, Pune. His writings on art and culture appear in The Hindu, The Indian Express, Hindustan Times amongst other publications. He has co-edited books on song-texts and food cultures in India. However often our ‘monkey minds', with its infantile intelligence, even dares to test the Supreme One. And the merciful lord more often than not even responds to such tests provided our doubt is genuine and our heart is sincere. LVM Kishore, an alumnus of Bhagawan's university, recalls one such ‘testing the divine moment' which made him taste the omnipresence of Bhagawan and till date remains his life's sweetest OMS moment. Arguing passionately against this theory is publisher and poet Naveen Kishore, who is celebrating 40 years of Seagull Books, a press that has brought us translated literature from everywhere in the world. Going against our perception that people only read pulp fiction, Kishore says that book publishing is thriving and local readerships are more robust than ever. He also weighs in on our difficult cultural moment and touches upon questions of censorship, cancellation of writers and the role of publishers themselves in what he calls "cannibal times."

He discusses his view on leadership and the importance of nurturing a culture that inspires change.  Confessions Over Insights Ariel's 'Share the Load' campaign's foundation lies in the raw confessions of individuals, not just insights. This approach strips away societal facades, revealing the true hypocrisies that exist. The campaign challenges societal norms and aims to ignite cultural change, addressing issues like patriarchy through everyday decisions. Creating Value Beyond Campaigns Kishore emphasizes the need for agencies to focus on creating value rather than just campaigns. Clients who trust in this philosophy reap the rewards of authentic engagement. Brands, according to Kishore, act as magnets, attracting individuals who resonate with their beliefs. This attraction forms the basis of brand loyalty and advocacy. Cultural Strategy Over Brand Purpose Kishore advocates for a shift towards cultural strategy over brand purpose alone. In a rapidly evolving landscape, brands must align with broader cultural shifts to remain relevant. He underscores the significance of cultural resonance, highlighting 'What an Idea Sirji' campaign of Idea which looked at the transformational societal impact of a mobile.  Leadership & Culture Leadership, to Kishore, transcends titles and designations. It's about actions, contributions, and fostering a culture of listening and mentorship. He emphasizes the value of collective wisdom within organizations, acknowledging the wealth of insights and experiences each team member brings to the table. Kishore underscores the importance of nurturing a culture of openness, authenticity, and accountability within organizations to drive meaningful change. So nice of you to agree and come over to our podcast. Thank you very much.Naveen Kishore: Thank you for having me.H: You were interested in theatre initially during your school days and college days. How did it lead to publishing?N: The theatre actually happened at school, everybody does theatre in school, so that was okay, but then I think it was in college that I really tasted blood, as it were, as far as theatre is concerned. But I remember there was a theatre group called the Red Curtain, which was essentially made up of young people from different colleges who had left school, started a theatre group as the school leavers. They started to do amateur theatre, but with great quality, aesthetic, style, production values. When I joined them, I was a backstage person. My first theatre experience was a play called Wait Until Dark, where I used to sit behind a refrigerator with a small cassette recorder. And every time the blind leading lady opened the fridge, I would have to put on the duct to create the sound of the machine and synchronize it with her shutting it. And at one point in this thriller, which was also a good film, this blind woman is trying to smash all the bulbs because she is going to be attacked by these two people. And I have to synchronize the swinging of her sort of stick to the bulbs and simulate a crash in a waste-paper basket with old bulbs and metal brass. This was my first beginning.H: Sounds too complicated.N: It was good fun. You were assisting backstage and then, immediately, you were plunged into the deep end. The next play was Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard. The Red Curtain was a very democratic set up, so they said: You design the sets and light. I knew nothing about it, but the British Council Library was very useful, so I used to go and study lighting-design books. But at that point, I was playing by the rules, where I was lighting your face as an actor at 45 degrees. But I was frustrated because I couldn't achieve darkness, so that was a disaster.I made a mess of it, I think. But for the next play I designed, Ibsen's Ghosts, I think I threw the rule book out of the window and I started to light the air around the actors. In real...

Hello! In this episode, Deepauk, Anantha and Aditya talk about Roby Varghese Raj's Kannur Squad starring Mammootty, Rony David Raj, Azees Nedumangad, Kishore and others. The film is a thriller based on a real squad of police officers who are tasked with the toughest cases. The film is very similar to last year's Kuttavum Shikshayum directed by Rajeev Ravi and H Vinoth's Tamil film Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru. Both the films, like Kannur Squad, feature a team of police officers operating beyond their familiar turf, traveling to different parts of the country in search of criminals on the run. We also look at how the films stack up and what they do differently with familiar premise. We also talk about Mammootty who is having a terrific late innings in his career and a particularly great 2023 with Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (check out our episode on the film), Kannur Squad and Jeo Baby's Kaathal The Core that is currently in theatres.
