Welcome to Season 3 of "Will This Be On The Test? Teacher Pod!" We are super excited to continue on our journey to bring you content that is honest, informative, and hopefully sometimes amusing! On our first episode of this season, we are so excited to have Stacey Ogden, creator of https://sidehustleteachers.com/! Stacey takes us through the process of blogging as a side hustle that actually MAKES MONEY, and doesn't force you to ask your friends to buy candles/makeup/leggings. And guess what? In addition to bringing in some cash, blogging might just give you the outlet you need to feel happier, and less available for the drudgery of extra "teaching" responsibilities (I'm talking to you, door decorating). Also, check out our new artwork, created by Miss V! And because she's multifaceted, she also has a terrific Substack, "Over Drinks!" Welcome back to Business Mojo and Margaritas! In today's episode, titled "How to Let Go of Guilt and Finally Start Your Side Hustle," our guest, Stacy Ogden, shares her journey from being a teacher to becoming a successful side hustler. Stacy has experimented with various side hustles over the years and has learned valuable lessons from each one. Stacy's passion for empowering others to pursue their dreams and find alternative career paths drove her to create "Side Hustle Summer Camp." In this episode, she dives into the mindset issues, particularly guilt and self-doubt, that often hold women back from starting their own businesses. She offers insights and advice to overcome these challenges and shares how prioritizing her side hustle actually made her a better mom and teacher. Thinking of Yourself as an Expert When You Don’t Feel Like One

Side Hustle Teachers

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2020 13:05

When people come to me for help choosing their side hustle, I usually ask them “what are you awesome at?”, or “what are you an expert at?”.  Teachers have a hard time identifying themselves as an expert in anything because they put a lot of pressure on the word expert. Today, we are talking about how you can start thinking of yourself as an expert, even if you don’t feel like one yet.  Expert is a big word. We put a lot of meaning behind this one little word. There are so many teachers I know that have amazing skill sets and could do amazing things out there with their side hustle but they won’t take that first step because they wont allow themselves to think they might be an expert.  I am going to take you through a few steps today on how you can start shifting your mindset to start thinking of yourself as the expert that you really are.  I hear a lot of teachers say to me “I’m not an expert, it’s just easy”. The thing is we often don’t see our own super powers, the things we are really great at because they come easily to us. Not that we don’t have to work at them, not that we don’t have to develop that skill, but it is easier for us to do that than other people. Therefore, when we go to program something on a computer, it seems easy to us, whereas someone else might go to do it and want to throw their computer out the window. These things that are easy for you, are actually a good way to start thinking of yourself as, if not an expert, someone one step above. Someone who can help other people with the wealth of the knowledge that you have, get one step further.  You can use this skill in a couple of different ways.  1. You can actually do these things for other people. Because it is easy for you and not for them, so why would they not pay you for it?  2. The other way to go is to use your teaching ability and help other people learn how to do what you do. Even though you think this is just something that is easy for you, there are still ways for you to build a side hustle around this, without calling yourself an expert.  The next thing I want you to remember is the 10% rule.  The 10% rule says that you don’t have to know all the things. If your side hustle is teaching golf, you don't have to be Tiger Woods! There are plenty of people who are making a living as golf experts that are not as good as Tiger Woods because, quite frankly, few are. So you only have to be about 10% better than the people you want to help at whatever you want to help them with. The 10% rule is a great rule of thumb when you are first getting started that you don’t have to know all the things. You just have to know a little bit more than the people you are trying to help.  The next thing is to remember, you’re a teacher! You are already a lifelong learner. You can learn as you go. There is nothing that says knowledge and skills when you start your business are all you’re allowed to have. Imagine if we started teaching like that, and the skills that we had as a first year teacher were all we had, never allowed to improve or learn more. What would our classrooms look like? It would be a nightmare! Why would we think the same is true for our business? You can learn as you go. As you figure out what clients and customers want from you, and focus your learning on that topic.  As you learn about your business, you can grow into your role as the expert. Whether the expert is teaching other people or doing for other people.  The last thing I’m going to say is that you don’t have to call yourself an expert. You can let other people do that for you. You will earn the reputation of expert from the people that you help. You are teaching them, you are the bees knees, and they are going to recommend you to other people! It’s not you announcing you’re an expert.  I’m technically a “master teacher”. I’ve got the degree and letters after my name to prove it. But that doesn’t mean I walk into a classroom and say “hello there, I’m Stacey Ogden, master teacher”. That would be a little ridiculous, and a little bit obnoxious. What I do is let my teaching speak for itself. I let my students and parents figure out that I’m a master teacher. You don’t have to go into your business calling yourself an expert. Do the work and let other people call you an expert. You can be the humble, ever-gracious genius behind the scenes.  Don’t feel the need to call yourself an expert. Understand that expert is a big word for teachers. Frankly, there is always something more to learn. When we stop learning, we stop growing. That’s when things get stagnant, boring, and frankly, nobody wants to be around the person who is stagnant and boring. You know what you know, and that can help the people that are 10% behind you.  This is true for all side hustles, if you want to be a virtual assistant, you need to know just a little bit more than the person you’re assisting. Maybe you want to sell resources on Teachers Pay Teachers, but you worry that they aren’t pretty, cool, interactive, or engaging enough. There are people out there that are looking for lessons that you already created and would be grateful for what you can provide for them! Because you have skills or knowledge that they don’t have.  So, my friend, do not fear calling yourself an expert. You don’t have to. But you do need to know that you have something that people need. And it is not just teaching. You can use your skills, your abilities, whether they’re innate or something you worked really hard to learn, to help support your family in a new way.  The CEO Teacher Academy opens this week, so if you’ve been thinking of selling your teaching resources on Teachers Pay Teachers, now’s the time to get started. Kayse Morris, who was on last week’s show, will walk you through everything you need to know to get started and get found on Teachers Pay Teachers AND as a special bonus for Side Hustle Teachers community members, if you join via my affiliate link, sidehustleteachers.com/ceo, you’ll be granted a lifetime membership into Edupreneur Academy! One of the ways we create a more fulfilling and joyful life is through a career that we’re passionate about. That said, it can be difficult to get excited about the work we do when it feels like an obligation or a chore.  When we actively choose to do something, we will feel fired up for it more consistently. Having a side hustle is a great way to refresh our love for what we do in a meaningful way. To make it even better, we need it to be specialized or niched down.  How do we go beyond something general, to a side hustle in a great niche? Why does this help us feel more fulfilled at work?  In this episode, CEO of Side Hustle Teachers and Founder of the Edupreneur Academy, Stacey Ogden shares how to start a niched-down side hustle that reignites our passion for work.   Don't make the mistake of trying to talk to everybody. Your business should be what you want it to be, not just what it can be. -Stacey Ogden   3 Things We Learned From This Episode   How to narrow our focus to only the people we’re excited to serveMany people struggle with wanting to help everyone. But if we want to create successful businesses, we have to narrow down our focus because it helps us connect with people who really love what we do.  How to stop apologizing for not helping everyoneTo create a niche, we have to narrow down the group of people we want to serve until we have a clear picture of our ideal client. Once we’ve done that, we have to be unapologetic about what we offer and what we don’t.  How to build a referral network to help the people who aren’t in our nicheIt can be difficult to say no when someone outside our niche asks for our assistance, but we can still help the client without broadening our scope. Building a referral network allows us to say “Yes” by introducing other products and services, without getting off track in our side hustle.   Guest Bio-  Stacey Ogden is the CEO of Side Hustle Teachers and founder of the Edupreneur Academy.  She has built a community of more than 4,000 educators supporting each other on their entrepreneurial journeys and helped dozens of teachers start and grow profitable side hustles, all while maintaining her full-time teaching job.  That’s right - she walks the talk.   To find out more about Stacey, head to: sidehustleteachers.com  facebook.com instagram.com linkedin.com   Stacey’s Edupreneur Academy is a membership program for teachers who want to start or grow a side hustle while still being the boss in the classroom. This week on the Edverything Podcast, we feature Stacey Ogden, the founder of @SideHustleTeachers. Stacey is a veteran music educator turned blogger turned podcaster, turned edupreneur coach. Stacey is an incredible example of owning her role as a teacher, but not allowing this to define every aspect of her life so that she can fully embrace her multiple passions and encourage others to do the same (and maybe make a little extra income along the way!) Stacey created a free online community which allows her to deep dive with teachers who want to start a business as a way to stay busy over the summer, or want a different way to pursue their passions, or make a little extra income, or are looking to transition out of the classroom altogether. Stacey is so very present with her community to not only offer free resources, support, real-time feedback, but she offers a free 15-minute call with each new member to truly learn about how she can support and guide their transition to side-hustling. Stacey's goal is to help her clients become equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to run successful businesses, and boy, does she do it well. In this episode, we hone in on some of the main reasons teachers hesitate committing fully to a side business, why we need to stop learning and start doing, 3 major questions to ask yourself before starting a side hustle, and how to avoid major pitfalls associated with the early stages of side businesses. Motherhood hit Stacey Ogden like a ton of bricks. Her baby was premature and the first months of her life were spent in hospital. Several years later, the attachment she had with her daughter, who is now 7 years old, was so strong that she completely gave up everything in her life for her. The stark reality dawned on Stacey that she was so consumed by motherhood, that she no longer had a life outside being a mum. She realised that this was no good either for herself, or for her daughter, and something had to be done. Slowly and gradually she clawed back her own identity and started a blog. Through her posts and podcast at Busy Mom Collective, Stacey now helps and supports mums who've experienced similar struggles as hers. Stacey's mission is to help mums realise that making themselves a priority isn't selfish or neglectful. On the contrary. By being a role model for the type of adult you want your kids to be, you're loving them in a better way. Do you really want your kids growing up thinking it's normal to be a frenzied ball of stress that doesn't have a life? In this episode, Stacey encourages you to find out what what lights you up outside of your children. It's all about self-reflection, finding something that excites you and having the discipline to go ahead and make it part of your schedule. You'll learn to find the balance between spending time with your children and finding time for yourself; letting go of control; making yourself a priority without feeling guilty; and changing the way you talk to yourself. Through her Side Hustle Summer Camp, she helps teachers that want to start a business as a way to stay busy over the summer, or want a different way to pursue their passions, or are looking to transition out of the classroom altogether. Stacey’s business is a great example of niching down. She takes a topic that is very broad, like starting an online business, and instead of trying to teach it to a very broad audience, like entrepreneurs or women or mom, she blended it with her passion and her experience and then laser-focused it on teachers, which allows her to speak directly to them in a way that resonates with them. My favorite quotes from Stacey in this episode: “What are some small tweaks I can make to make my audience’s life even easier - and make them realize that I totally get where they are coming from?” “You have so many skills that go into being “just a teacher.” Let’s hash those out. Ep 51: How to Know When You Should Pivot in Your Business

Running a business is rarely a straight path. There are twists and turns and bumps in the road, sometimes huge boulders in the way. And while we're on this path, sometimes - often times, actually - we find that the lessons we learn while winding our way along lead us in a different direction than where we first thought we were heading. So how do you know when to follow that new direction, and when to stay the course you were already on? Well, today we're talking all about when to pivot in your business.   Twists and turns and bumps and boulders are normal! Sometimes we think that our journey is not typical. It is! It's typical because there is no such thing as typical! We all need to figure out along the way what are the twists and turns that we are willing to follow, and when do we need to jump onto a new path! It's going to be different for everyone but very few successful businesses started out doing the same thing that they ended up doing. "You are going to have to climb mountains and scale tall buildings no matter what path you take." - Stacey Ogden  Business is hard. Despite what it said in that Facebook ad you just saw, there is no key to overnight success in business. It's hard work. It will make you question your decisions, but that doesn't mean they're wrong. It will make you question your abilities, but that doesn't mean you're not cut out for this. It will make you question your intelligence, your dedication, yourself in every way possible, but that doesn't mean you have to change. "Don't confuse the hard for the need to pivot." - Stacey Ogden  Think about the long term.  What would life be like if you continue on the path you're on? What would it look like if you pivot to a new path? "You're creating a business for yourself. It should be a business you want." - Stacey Odgen  What do you feel called to do? What's your heart telling you? Is there a path you ignored that you still think about? Is there something that keeps you up at night wishing you could do, but it just doesn't fit with your current business? Make the call. You can sit on a decision indefinitely. It's not good for you, your business, and the people around you. You have to make a decision. As Earl Smooter so eloquently said in Sweet Home Alabama, "You can't ride 2 horses with 1 ass." You've got to decide. Let’s Connect! See all that Stacey has to offer at The Busy Mom Collective! Join The Busy Mom Collective Facebook Group and continue the conversation! Ep 45: Should You Discount Your Services for the Holidays?

Episode Summary Since it's the first week of November and it's the season for sales especially in the US, I thought we would talk about the age-old question of to discount or not to discount? On the podcast, I am going to talk about both cases and why they both make sense and at the end, I'm going to let you all draw your own opinions.  Let's start with the not to discount side. There are people that feel that when you discount your services, you're discounting the value of your services. So, by discounting you are creating less value in the mind of your customer. Another argument I hear is that many of us are running on a shoestring budget and when we discount our services, we are giving up our profit. There is the argument that when you discount you sell more, but there is no guarantee of that!  Now, let's talk about the argument for discounting your services. I mentioned previously that often times when you discount your services, you get more people to buy. Black Friday is a perfect example of that! The other argument for discounting is that it makes your product accessible to those that couldn't afford it at full price.  "There is that other benefit of discounting your services is that you reach and help more people!" - Stacey Ogden  Are there options to discounting? Absolutely! One of the big options to discounting is to add more value! An example of that would be adding more to your package at the same price.  With the holidays coming up, we have to consider the mindset of people who are buying our products or services. It's a big sale time in the US and what the means with people who are trying to sell anything is that their potential customer is going to be inundated with sales, discounts, offers, upgrades and all sorts of other things!  Let's talk about a couple ways that YOU can get more for your holiday buck! If we are talking about trying to get more sales during the holiday, There are a lot of sale techniques that can increase your revenue. A great example of this would be bundling your service or product.  "Another option to discounting is you can provide services or products that you don't offer any other time of year!" - Stacey Ogden    Let’s Connect! Do you have a podcast - or video series or blog - but aren’t getting leads from it as you had expected? You know your content is good - you’re getting listeners and viewers and readers - but, when it comes to making money as a result of that content, it’s crickets (and an empty inbox). What can you do? This is the question my guest today, Stacey Ogden of Busy Mom Collective, had. In this on-air coaching call, you’ll hear as we dissect what’s going on with her podcast (if you don’t have a podcast, you can apply it to the content you’re creating). We come up with specific strategies she - and you - can use to generate leads, including: what to do on her podcast to talk about what she does what kinds of calls to action to include and how many where to promote her podcast what to do when people sign up for her email list.   One thing Stacey told me is that she doesn’t want her podcast to come off as a sales pitch. And, I totally get it. I did an entire episode on why you shouldn’t sell from the stage - and what to do instead (episode 59). The same premise applies to your podcast and other content. If you need help strategizing your podcast, video series, or messaging in general, you can book a strategy session. Strategy sessions are great for specific questions or challenges you have. We dig deep and you walk away with a concrete action plan, much like you’ll hear here with Stacey.   This episode is the second in a 4-part series related to podcasting. If you host a podcast or have a thought about it, this series will help you get better results. If you don’t have any plans for a podcast, still listen! The strategies we talk about can be applied in other areas too.   About My Guest: Stacey Ogden is the founder and owner of the Busy Mom Collective. Through her podcast of the same name, and working one-on-one with clients, she helps working moms and mompreneurs master their schedules, own their time, and conquer their out of control to-do lists. She lives in western Connecticut with her husband, 7 year old daughter, and German Shepherd puppy where she teaches middle school music and runs a local chapter of Business Among Moms.
