This solo episode is not only the last one of this season and of 2018 - it also represents a final chapter in the Yorks' life. In this episode, I - Lisa York - talk about our family's journey of beating childhood cancer, as our third son, Benny, prepares to have his last chemotherapy treatment on the 21st December 2018 in Sydney. An uncut, unedited video version of this episode is also available, so if you'd like to get an idea of what recording a podcast entails (warts and all) here's your chance. As you may already know if you're a regular listener to the show, our son Benny was diagnosed with leukemia shortly before his third birthday when we were living in London (UK). In this episode, I talk you through Benny's devastating diagnosis, those hard few months of chemotherapy, and how we handled our darkest hour after moving to Canberra (Australia). It's a story full of twists and turns, lots of tears, tiredness, and difficulties. But as we move back to Sydney and prepare for Benny's last treatment, we are entering a new, exciting chapter of our lives. I am grateful for the people who shared this journey with us and feel lucky and blessed for the way Benny's leukemia has changed me and helped me grow as a person. This podcast and my online membership - Let's Conquer Motherhood - wouldn't exist if it wasn't for what we experienced over the last few years. We are a family who survived childhood cancer. And for me, the lesson to be learnt is that there's something good in every situation, even in adversity. So I want you to hold on to this. Tomorrow is another day. And you too, will get through it. The Mumologist) is a clinical psychologist specialising in pregnancy, birth, and parenthood. Having always been fascinated by mental health, and how our mental and physical health is influenced by our histories and environment, after completing her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Emma decided to specialise in the perinatal period and support parents during what is often a delicate time in their lives, when rapid emotional changes and transformation can take place. Emma offers one to one psychological therapy, as well as group support. She is a keen writer and campaigner for issues related to mental health and parenting and co-founded the Make Birth Better network with Dr Rebecca Moore. She feels that, as a society, we need to begin to recognise how crucial this period of our lives is - so that it can lead to positive change and growth for parents and their children. Originally a teacher, Lore re-trained in traditional psychotherapy after realising that something just wasn't adding up for her. Feeling lost, inadequate, and often 'broken', she struggled for a long time - deep down she knew she was meant to be on a different path and do greater work. Eventually, Lore found the courage to release the baggage that no longer served her and to start living according to who she really is, at soul level. She found her purpose. And now she helps others learn what their purpose is, so they can use their unique strengths and skills to build careers and relationships where they can thrive and flourish. Lore's journey in moving away from a life that was built on external expectations wasn't easy. It involved a lot of soul-searching, and she went through an extremely emotional and difficult time, which even resulted in the end of her first marriage. While going through divorce, Lore also walked away from her career in psychotherapy, but it all paid off. She's now married to her soulmate and has built a successful career around her deep calling. Business Coach and Let's Conquer Motherhood member Jessica Fearnley is a healthy mum of two young boys and runs a successful business around her and her family's needs. But getting to where she is today wasn't always easy. About 8 years ago, and only a few months into her marriage, things came to a head for Jessica. Feeling unwell, exhausted, and completely broken and burnt out after years of working extremely hard and putting pressure on herself, Jessica decided to leave the corporate world and the career she had worked so hard to build. Emotionally and physically at an all-time low and unable to work, she did the only thing she felt she could do. She took time out and built herself up again one tiny step at the time. When Jessica fell pregnant with her first child, a lot of the symptoms she had experienced as a result of stress and anxiety made an unwelcome come back into her life. And needless to say, her dream of having an idyllic 9 months was totally crushed. After a difficult birth, Jessica struggled to adjust to life with a newborn, and she very quickly realised that she was keen to put her professional experience to good use again, but she had to do it on her terms. Mum-of-two and Let's Conquer Motherhood member Stephanie Myerscough has recently packed her bags and her whole life and moved to Italy with her husband and young children. While she's still busy getting used to a new country, culture, and language and settling her family in, Stephanie is also studying for a post-graduate Master Degree in Applied Positive Psychology, attending lessons between the UK and France. Following the demands of her husband's job, Stephanie and her family have moved home several times over the last few years, and while life has certainly been full on, Stephanie is embracing the opportunities that are coming her way and making the most of what she's learning through her degree and within the Let's Conquer Motherhood membership. In this episode, Stephanie introduces us to the concepts of thriving and flourishing. If you've ever had times when you felt you were just nodding along and navigating through life with no real intention, you may have found yourself in 'survival mode'. As Stephanie points out, while this is something a lot of mums experience, it's common to lack the knowledge and tools that can help us transition from a negative mental state to a more positive one. One where you're not just surviving, but where you're also thriving. By the end of this interview, you'll learn an easy, practical technique that you can use at any time to check in with yourself to become more in tune and aware of your emotions and the way you're feeling. If that wasn't enough, she also homeschools her four children. Having started her first seasonal business as a side-hustle while she still worked in her corporate job, Rhonda quickly realised she had a choice. Newborn babies don't sleep very well. But in Vicki's case, her son's challenging sleeping patterns continued for a number of years. Needless to say, this left Vicki chronically sleep-deprived and feeling totally exhausted and isolated as a result. Her experience, and the way it affected both her personal and professional life, led to the creation of The Children's Sleep Charity, which offers information and strategies to parents and professionals in supporting and educating families around sleep. Through her work, Vicki empowers families who are struggling with sleep to make the changes that are right for them. These can include creating sleep plans, practising breathing and mindfulness exercises, and learning strategies to create a calmer and less tense environment around bedtime. With a lot of information out there focused on children's sleep, Vicki reminds us that a mother's sleep habits can still be negatively impacted long after her children are sleeping through the night. As busy mums, we have a duty to prioritise our sleep in order to stay well, become more effective, and keep our families safe, which is why in this episode Vicki shares tips to help mums sleep better. During this interview, you'll learn why what you choose to do in the hour before you go to bed can dramatically improve your sleep quality. By the end of this episode, you'll have a number of practical strategies to get more in synch with your body and relax before bedtime, including a list of foods that you should or shouldn't eat before bed. You'll also learn what causes you to wake in the night and what you can do if you struggle to fall asleep again. Follow Vicki's advice, and you'll be ready to sleep like a baby. Newly married, pregnant, and in her twenties, Emily Hodge received a devastating cancer diagnosis that would change the course of her life in many ways. One of which was losing her baby and being unable (so far) to conceive again. That was a few years ago and, after 15 years working as a Health Psychologist in the NHS, Emily used her experience to help others. She's now a successful Life Coach and has helped and supported hundreds of people, including other cancer patients, to lead happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. Over the years, working with people on a one-to-one basis and in group settings, Emily started to notice something. No matter who you are, where you're from or what your backstory is, we all want similar things - to feel happier, calmer, more focused and to lead a life that's right for us. So in 2017, Emily launched her signature group programme - the Gentle Life course, which guides rushed, busy and stressed out women over 6 weeks to map out what living more gently means to them. It provides them with the tools and strategies to kickstart the lifelong work that will help them lead the life they want to live (so that they might shout less at their kids, be happier in their relationships and be so much kinder to themselves). In this episode, you'll learn how checking in with your feelings, thoughts, and emotions allows you to re-define your behaviours, actions, and habits. By becoming more aware of the way you spend your time, you'll find out how you can start to say no to the things you don't really want, so you can gradually replace them with the things that you do. If you're ready to find a little bit of space and calm in your life, learn how to be kinder to yourself, and discover some practical tools that will help you develop your emotional resilience, tune in and discover the five steps that Emily shares that will help you live more gently. Despite being a trained meditation and yoga teacher and having a strong self-care practice, Zoe abandoned the daily habits that had given her so much inner strength over the years. She found herself overcome by fear and anxiety and, like many mums, started comparing herself to others. With her self-esteem hitting rock bottom, the negative patterns she was once so familiar with made an unwelcome comeback, and her self-critical voice became really loud. Thankfully Zoe, now a coach, podcaster and speaker, knew exactly what to do. Through her training and experience, she gradually started to re-connect with the things she knew worked for her - community, meditation, yoga, and journaling. In a way, Zoe was lucky. Even though she found herself lost in the mayhem of early motherhood, she had the right tools to overcome her fear and anxiety. This is why, on a rainy Thursday afternoon, Zoe decided to start Motherkind. Through her blog, podcast and coaching, she shares her experience and knowledge to help and support other mums through testing times. In this episode, you'll understand why your brain is wired for anxiety and fear and learn how you can look within yourself to overcome the big emotions that come with motherhood. By the end of this episode, you'll have a number of really easy-to-implement tools that will help you find or re-connect with who you are. You'll learn to stop living out of obligation and start living the life that you want to live instead. Because like Zoe says, your children are only young once, and this is the only chance you'll get to enjoy these precious years. Dr Pragya Argawal is an academic, designer, writer, business owner, and the busy mum of three girls. Born and raised in India, she moved to the UK as a young single mum to complete her Master's Degree and PhD. Pragya is no-doubt a very accomplished woman, but things haven't always been easy for her. During her academic career, she suffered from stress and burnout, and more recently, after the premature birth of her twins, fought anxiety and depression. Severely sleep-deprived and under pressure with not one but two babies suffering from colic and reflux, Pragya fell back on to her safety net. Creativity. During a break from her career, Pragya had turned her hobby of print-making into a business by setting up her own art studio Hedge and Hog Prints. And in 2017, inspired by her twins' multiple allergies, she founded The Art Tiffin, a vegan and eco-friendly box of art material. A family-run and ethical business, The Art Tiffin is the first social enterprise to actively campaign for cruelty-free art materials. Pragya is passionate about helping families find the most natural, toxic-free products, and fostering creativity in children from a young age, but she also knows how important it is to raise awareness about mental health and make a positive social impact by giving back to charities. In this episode, Pragya walks you through the research and neuroscience behind creativity, something that she believes we can all find inside of ourselves. She explains how taking only a few minutes out of your busy days to do something creative can do wonders for your mental health and wellbeing. And if you think you're not the creative type, hold on. Because you'll find out exactly what being creative means and what you can do to express your own creativity. Soon after Melissa Brujin had her first child, she realised that things weren't quite right. Struggling to bond with her baby, wracked with anxiety about her abilities as a mum, and experiencing a general loss of confidence, she wondered what was wrong with her. Although she sought help, she couldn't find anything appropriate in her hometown. Thankfully, there was one person she could turn to: her sister-in-law and midwife Debby Gould. With Debby's help, plus the wonderful online support she eventually found from mothers on the other side of the world and alongside her own research, Melissa was able to connect the dots and recognise that her emotions and experience of early motherhood had been strongly impacted by the traumatic birth of her first child. Fast forward 19 years, Melissa (now a happy and healed mother of three) and mum-of-two Debby (now a birth consultant), have helped thousands of women and families to heal from traumatic birth experiences through their work at Birthtalk.org. Melissa and Debby co-authored the book How to Heal a Bad Birth where they emphasise that a traumatic birth where the mother doesn't feel heard or supported, or where she feels frightened or out of control, isn't just something to just 'get over'. Through the book, their in-person workshops and individual consultations, Melissa and Debby have been supporting mothers all over the world to recover from their birthing experiences, so that they can go on to have positive and empowering subsequent births, or if they are not having more babies, they can go back to their families feeling more at peace and able to move on. In this episode, you'll understand what defines a 'bad' birth and how a challenging experience can negatively impact your mental health. You'll find out how a traumatic experience can affect women for years to come, if not unpicked and addressed in the right way. You'll also learn how to create your own personalised healing journey by looking at the way you feel now and reflecting back on the life-changing experience of childbirth. If you suffer from niggling symptoms and never quite feel in best health, you probably put it down to your busy life, reach for the painkillers, and try to get on with your day as best you can. But did you know that your body is giving you these warning signs and signals that there might be an underlying dysfunction? Your job is to learn to listen to the messages your body is giving you, understand why this is happening, and do something about it. That's what Jackie Bowker, the mum of a 3 and 6 year old, did. After suffering from adrenal depletion, chronic fatigue syndrome and a decades-long disordered eating and sugar addiction, Jackie learnt first-hand the profound power of food as medicine. As a result of her illness, Jackie became passionate about restoring bodies back to balance to achieve optimal health, and became a Functional Nutritionist. Jackie went on to establish Hello Happy where, amongst other things, runs a transformative 21 Day Nutrition Course and Plan to detox, reset and revitalise your body to live a healthier life. In this episode, Jackie will help you identify the root cause of your dysfunction and will set you on the path to heal the body through nutrition, without the need for synthetic drugs or surgery. Her philosophy is simple: the symptoms you're experiencing like digestive issues, weight gain, infertility, adult acne, anxiety etc, result from weaknesses in the body's physiological foundations. And it can all be fixed by cleaning up your diet and lifestyle. Follow Jackie's advice and you'll start to feel vibrant again. You'll shed excess weight, look and feel fantastic and watch niggly problems melt away. As one of her clients so eloquently put it, "Jackie has turned my sluggish body into a strong, lean, high functioning machine and I am now so much better equipped to deal with life's challenges such as raising a small family of 5 with 3 children under 3." As the mum of a small baby and a two year old, Liz Sergeant knows first hand how much of her energy her kids use up. But unlike the rest of us, Liz has a sneaky advantage. She's a registered nutritionist and understands that what you eat not only affects your energy levels, but also your sleep quality, mood, concentration, digestion, body shape and many other health complaints. Liz believes that the foundation of good nutrition and health is based on eating real foods. She also knows that mums lead busy lives, and with so much conflicting dietary advice out there, this can be a lot harder than it sounds. She founded The Well Nourished Club to help cut through the confusion and support people to change their diet, improve their nutrition and achieve their goals. But this episode goes beyond just food. Liz takes a holistic approach and as well as talking about nutrition, we discuss adapting to motherhood while running a business, avoiding burnout, and getting the balance right by recognising your limitations and being realistic in what you can achieve. Your body is your most precious possession and Liz is here to help you look after it. By the end of this episode you will cast aside the chocolate cake, reclaim your flagging energy, and, like Liz, may even consider eating vegetables for breakfast! With kids comes clobber. The toys, the clothes, the special equipment. Bigger car. Bigger house. More storage. It goes on and on. But what would happen if you decided not to buy anything new for a year? I loathe shopping, but even I gasped in shock. What nothing? For a whole year? Impossible. Well not for Jen Gale. In 2012/13 when her two boys were small, she decided to give it a try. Just for fun. It was a bit of a diversion from changing nappies and running around after children all day. Little did she know that her Make Do and Mend project would lead her to running a successful blog and podcast and having a Facebook group with 16,000 members. She's appeared on National TV and in the Guardian newspaper (UK), and has even done a TEDx talk. At the beginning of this year, Jen turned her project into a business when she launched her online membership program, The Good Business Hub. As you can imagine, I had a lot of questions for Jen. In this episode, you'll find out how she managed special occasions like Christmas and kids birthdays when spending is almost inevitable. How she handled getting the necessary things you need for kids, such as car seats. What happened when essential items, like the washing machine, broke down. And the big one, how she got her husband on board with her seemingly wacky plan. Most mums, I imagine, would bulk at the idea of not buying anything new for a year, but it's enlightening to hear what Jen learnt along the way about herself, her life, and the world we're all leaving behind for our grandchildren. Motherhood hit Stacey Ogden like a ton of bricks. Her baby was premature and the first months of her life were spent in hospital. Several years later, the attachment she had with her daughter, who is now 7 years old, was so strong that she completely gave up everything in her life for her. The stark reality dawned on Stacey that she was so consumed by motherhood, that she no longer had a life outside being a mum. She realised that this was no good either for herself, or for her daughter, and something had to be done. Slowly and gradually she clawed back her own identity and started a blog. Through her posts and podcast at Busy Mom Collective, Stacey now helps and supports mums who've experienced similar struggles as hers. Stacey's mission is to help mums realise that making themselves a priority isn't selfish or neglectful. On the contrary. By being a role model for the type of adult you want your kids to be, you're loving them in a better way. Do you really want your kids growing up thinking it's normal to be a frenzied ball of stress that doesn't have a life? Mum of 3 and founder of Gumptious, Naomi Light has always had a fascination with psychology. She loves learning about the inner workings of the mind, but it wasn't until things in her life went horribly wrong did she realise how important the theories she'd learnt would become. When Naomi and her husband found themselves in a failed management buyout of the family business their financial world started to unravel. Worse still they discovered the business was on the verge of collapse and they needed to bail it out of debt and re-build it. The resulting pressure of mounting debt put a big strain on their marriage and on Naomi's health. Naomi experienced a breakdown early in 2017. For three months she was barely able to crawl through each day and held on by a thread. But she knew she had to dig deep to turn things around. It was a slow and painful journey of self-discovery, but gradually Naomi started to come to terms with what had happened and started to see the good in it. Her story is phenomenal, and she candidly shares the highs, the lows, and the lessons learnt along the way. In this episode we talk about money; having it, not having it, and what you should do with it. Through Naomi's financial story, we discuss how to fall back on your core values when you don't know which way to turn; how to shape and pursue your goals when the odds are stacked against you; and how to be grateful for the small things, even in your darkest hour. Former financial services professional and mum of two, Rebecca Ryan is a yoga and meditation teacher and the published author of Mindfulness for Mothers, a book that teaches you how to stay calm and present while caring for your child. My own interest in meditation was completely lost under piles of laundry and screaming babies when I entered the frantic world of motherhood. But having used mindfulness and meditation to overcome a difficult year, I'm once again a raving fan and consider it an integral part of bettering myself as a mum. Rebecca enjoys sharing her passion for meditation with other mothers, whether long-term meditators or newbies, and encourages her students to allow mindfulness to seep into their daily lives. She's practical and down to earth because as a busy mum herself, understands how tricky bringing a sense of calm into our bursting-at-the-seems life can be. In this episode, Rebecca explains why you should bother to meditate in the first place and, once convinced, how you can go about doing it. You'll learn the three key elements of meditation that are common to all styles which will deepen your understanding and help you to simplify your practice. Motherhood comes with a raft of challenges. I've never been pushed to the limit as much as I have since becoming a mum. I thought I was a pretty tough cookie, but motherhood can hit you like a ton of bricks. The biggest lesson I've learned is the importance of reaching out and asking for help. That's why I invited Dr Rebecca Moore onto my show today. Becca is a mum of two and lives in London, UK. She's a birth trauma expert specialising in perinatal mental health, and works for the NHS as well in her own private practice. She writes and lectures widely on the topic and hosts an annual birth trauma conference in London every year. In this episode we talk frankly and deeply about many of the, often unspoken, dark issues of motherhood. PTSD, anxiety, depression, miscarriage, loneliness and suicide. We share our stories and personal experiences and Becca offers a glimmer of light to mums who are currently struggling through difficult times. Whether you're a mum who has already come through tough times, are currently suffering, or know someone who is, this is an important episode. We need to bring these issues to light so women know they're not alone and that there is a pathway through to better times if they can summons the confidence to reach out for help. Sara Bussandri is an Italian mum of 3 boys aged 9, 6, and 3 and lives in London, UK. Throughout her pregnancies and around maternity leave Sara continued her career as Business Analyst. But by 2016 the heavy pace of holding down a career, raising three boys and running a household took its toll. The stress and overwhelm of being on the hamster wheel of life made her feel like she was in survival mode and consequently felt unfulfilled in all areas of her life. Things had to change, but it took a (literal) bang to her head to jolt her into making the difficult decision to take a break from her work. With a broken leg, she started a blog and carved out a new career as a freelance writer and soon-to-be author which gave her the freedom and flexibility to work around her children. She now writes passionately on her Mind Your Mamma blog as well as for various publications, including the Huffington Post UK about her journey on the path to self-awareness and self-discovery. Her path to a better life was long, slow and painful, but ultimately successful. Today she shares her transformation from living on ‘auto-pilot' to creating a more mindful and intentional life for herself and her family. Kate Alexandra is a Sydney-based yoga and meditation teacher, the mum of two small children, and a passionate advocate of the importance of nurturing yourself. Her self-care journey began soon after she entered motherhood and came as a result of caring for her very high needs baby. Severely lacking sleep and stressed to the max, she developed post-natal anxiety, severe insomnia and her mental health crumbled. Seeing similar problems with others, Kate founded the Radical Self-Care Project which began life as a humble instagram ‘challenge' back in December 2015. Today, she hosts her own podcast, has developed a 28-day E-Course, and most recently has launched the Radical Self Journal through a successful crowd funding project. Kate assures you that self-care isn't indulgent, or limited to simply treating yourself. By taking care of yourself you'll get to know yourself better and by making it part of your daily life, not only are you sending love inwards to yourself, you become more loving and caring to everyone around you. Your partner and kids will thank you for it. In this episode you'll discover what Radical Self-Care means and why a 'one size fits all approach' doesn't work. You'll learn about the 'Yoga of Parenthood' a mindset tool around the vitally important practices of surrender, sleep and self-compassion. We talk about how to be more intentional in doing the things that fill you up and you'll leave with the ability to craft your own unique self-care practice. When Sara Campin's daughter and son - now 5 and 2 - came along, Sara fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a mum. But although she's incredibly grateful for this wonderful gift and loves her kids with so much intensity it hurts, the realities of parenting fell well short of her built up expectations, leaving her with feelings of disappointment and failure. London-based Sara handled the high-stress corporate environment successfully, but motherhood proved to be rather more challenging. She suffered post natal anxiety and depression with both her children and still often feels like she's struggling to hold it all together. I can relate to that. At the beginning of this year, she took time out of her fast-paced career to pause and consider her core values. She subsequently made the difficult decision to step off of the corporate ladder, to spend more time with her kids and follow her true passions. She retrained as a life and change coach and founded Keeping Mum Mighty where she helps mums increase their positive well-being and find greater joy in parenthood. She's particularly passionate about guiding mums through the difficult transition periods of motherhood. In today's honest and open conversation about the difficult side of motherhood, Sara shares her 5 greatest challenges in adapting from a sparkling career to motherhood. She has practical solutions for helping resolve the key issues that many mothers face, and by learning to love and nourish herself, whilst embracing and adapting to a completely different lifestyle, Sara's been able to find greater balance, harmony and happiness in her motherhood journey. Woo Hoo. I can hardly believe it. I've reached my 100th episode. It's been challenging, intellectually demanding and stressful at times, but also stimulating, fulfilling and rewarding. But before I tell you what's in store with this episode, I want to say a huge thank you to my amazing team of mums who busily work behind the scenes to bring you the podcast each week. You know who you are and I owe so much to you. Thank you. And of course, I need to thank you, my wonderfully devoted listener. Yes you. Thank you so much for supporting me by tuning in to the show. So, on to today's episode. I wanted to bring you something a little different for episode number 100, so I have a very special guest lined up. It's .... wait for it ..... ME! Yes, that's right. The tables have been turned and Naomi Light (one of my mum volunteers) is grabbing the mic and asking the questions. Just for fun, we agreed not to do any preparations ahead of the interview so all of her questions came at me cold. And boy, does Naomi know how to dig beneath the surface to get me to reveal the inner workings of my mind. In fact, I'm a bit worried she might steal my job! I'm not going to tell you any more, I'll just leave you to listen for yourself. My home is noisy. When my four kids burst through the door after school, it's loud. The chatter, the excitement, the bickering. Everyone's talking over everyone else and I can barely hear myself think. But as much as I sometimes wish they had a mute button, what happens when the noise is no longer there? What happens when they're all grown up and leave home? Jodi Silverman is an empty nester. Her daughter and son who are 22 and 19 have gone off to find their way in the world leaving her and her husband at home with their dog. But, although you grieve the loss, life-coach Jodi says that the world doesn't have to stop there. In fact, this is an opportunity for a new beginning. With that teaching in mind, Jodi set up Moms Who Dare®, a community for mums with kids in high school and beyond looking to connect, share and thrive through having, or preparing for, an empty nest. Whether you're an empty nester or not, this episode is a must listen because a lot of her advice rings true whatever stage of motherhood you're at. If nothing else, it's a great reminder to savour as much as you can in spite of the tantrums and tiredness, because one day the intense early years will be gone forever. Mentally strong mums know that, by avoiding negative behaviours such as begrudging other people's success or dwelling on bad experiences, you'll be better equipped to overcome life's difficulties and become the best mum possible. Amy Morin knows this more than most. Amy is a psychotherapist and foster parent who, amongst other life tragedies, became a widow at 23. Although her early adult life looked bleak, she knew she had to take everything she knew academically about mental strength and apply it to her own personal situation. Easier said than done. But, rather than wallow in her own 'pity party', Amy scrapped up the pieces and went on the write the international bestseller, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do and deliver a TED talk, The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong, which has been viewed more than 5 million times. Today we delve deeply into Amy's recently launched second book, 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don't Do. We pull apart some of the issues in the book like why you should stop putting your child at the centre of your universe, the importance of eradicating mum-guilt, and why understanding your values is critical to your parenting. You'll learn that by making the often tough choices, you'll help your child build mental muscle and develop into a healthy, strong adult. Mum life is a rush. Rushing to do the drop off so you can get to work on time. Rushing to get the children's dinner on the table before the hunger-monster rears its ugly head. Rushing to grab some groceries before your time without the kids is up. Rush. Rush. Rush. But what if you could change gear and slow down a little? That's what Brisbane mum Rachelle Glendon did two years ago when her son Max was born. Realizing that she'd spent her life using activity and busyness to curb the emotional pain of a difficult childhood, Rachelle wanted to change the status quo. Emerging from a painful period of loneliness in the time after her son was born, Rachelle knew she needed to change her priorities. She confronted her emotions head on and fought the stigma of being seen as lazy or boring and chose life in the slow lane. And she lives a far more rewarding and fulfilled life because of it. Rachelle now helps other mums to slow down and shares her story, alongside hints and tips on how to live a slower life, has a video blog on YouTube and through her website Glendon Family Diaries. When I hear the words Occupational Therapist, I think of someone who helps you recover from injury through a rehabilitation program. It never occurred to me that they could help mums in any other way. But I learned that because Occupational Therapists specialise in seeing the human body as a “whole”, they can help you achieve optimal health and wellbeing which allows you to live your best life. Mum of two, Sarah Hausler is the owner of Bloom Wellbeing and has been an Occupational Therapist for 16 years in Adelaide, Australia. Through her work, and in her personal life, Sarah's seen first hand the impact that pregnancy, childbirth and parenting has on the emotional and physical wellbeing of mums. Since becoming a mum herself, she now focuses on helping mothers to participate in meaningful activities to support a holistic approach to wellness. In this episode we delve deeper into how Occupational Therapy can support mums. We discuss a whole range of issues including the emotional impact of sleep deprivation, and what to do when you experience a change in life priorities. We also talk about difficult topics like how to recover emotionally following a distressing or traumatic childbirth experience and the challenges of raising a child with an illness or developmental disorder. This was an eye-opening conversation for me which has broadened my knowledge of the world of Occupational Therapy. Being mindful in your day-to-day life as a busy mum can be tricky. You understand, abstractly, how beneficial it is, but taking that final step to put it into action can be a struggle. I get it. I find it incredibly difficult amongst the noise of our home, the busyness of getting through each day, and the wall to wall chores than never subside, to find space to be mindful. That's why I enjoyed my conversation with mindfulness teacher Michelle Gale, the author of the brand new book, “Mindful Parenting in a Messy World” and host of a podcast of the same name. Why? Because Michelle brings mindfulness right into your own kitchen while hurriedly serving up dinner and shouting through the house that you'll be there to wipe his bottom just as soon as you've saved the sausages from burning. Michelle brings the message that life is messy. But it's right in the midst of this messiness that you'll find your greatest potential for growth and transformation. In a practical and down-to-earth way, Michelle teaches you that the act of parenting really begins with parenting yourselves by being in tune with what is happening, right here, right now. Today Michelle will help you through the rough spots so you'll react less, connect more and feel at ease, so you can wholeheartedly embrace your messy life. Having a teenager in the house can be a challenge to say the least. It's so frustrating watching your teen make poor choices and roll their eyes at your suggestions. The battles to get them to make better choices get constantly ignored, disrupts the balance of your home and jeopardises your relationship with your child. Enter Claire Ketchum. She has two teenagers of her own and has devoted most of her life to living and working with teens. Through her work, Claire knows that teens are far more likely to listen to a teacher, coach or friend, rather than their parent. Therefore, Claire bridges that gap in her work as a Stress Less Coach for Teens and her vast experience has given her a deep understanding of how to motivate teens. In this episode, Claire will show you how she helps teens see and value their strengths and to be open to support in areas where they struggle. You'll find out how she gets them out of the chronic stress loop for good, so they can create healthy habits, manage expectations better, experience more success and remain happy and healthy in school and beyond. By following her strategies, you'll discover a way to encourage your teen to create health habits in a way that makes your teen feel supported rather than judged. This will help you have a more harmonious home and get your relationship with your teen back on the right path. Your hopes, dreams and priorities change once you have children. Your career, that once offered personal validation before becoming a mum, no longer cuts it now children are on the scene. So how do you figure out exactly what you want from life, and more importantly, how can you make it a reality? Actor, writer, speaker and coach, Nicky Raby will help you do just that with some careful planning and down-to-earth advice. In this episode, Nicky talks about how life has changed since having her 21 month old son, and how she juggles the unpredictable world of acting around motherhood. It's clear that Nicky's grabbing life by the horns, and as a professional coach she helps other mums navigate similar changes. While it's great that there are loads of self-development options available, Nicky takes the practical view that you can't meditate for half a day and send off a couple of emails. Instead, she offers practical advice and suggestions to help you to find your own space, on your own terms. Today Nicky will open you up to the possibility of 'and' rather than being closed off by 'but'. It shouldn't be ‘successful but single', and it shouldn't be ‘creative but poor'. You can have both ‘creative and successful'. And it's OK to blend together your multiple passions to create a career and life that works for you. Why let yourself be limited by the expectations of others when you can fly, just like Nicky.
