Do you feel like hitting pause when everything around you feels uncertain? Whether it's the economy, politics, AI, or just the general state of flux we're all living in, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next. You're not alone - I've been feeling it too. In this episode, Diane Diaz and I talk candidly about what we've been noticing in ourselves, our clients, and the conversations we're having behind the scenes here at Speaking Your Brand. Spoiler alert: pausing too long or isolating yourself isn't the answer. Instead, we share: Why action creates clarity and how to act your way to right thinking A behind-the-scenes look at how we're navigating uncertainty at Speaking Your Brand How in-person speaking engagements and networking are helping us build momentum Why now is the best time to connect and take action (even if you're an introvert) How to experiment and refresh your offerings without overwhelm What to do when ChatGPT gives you too many ideas (yes, really!) If you've been feeling stuck, this episode is your invitation to move from “What now?” to “What's next?” Let this episode be the boost you need to keep showing up, sharing your message, and stepping into your next level. Plus, we share about our upcoming in-person workshop in Orlando, Narrative that Sells, and how it's designed to help you attract clients, speaking opportunities, and thought leadership visibility by creating and practicing your signature talk.
We hear all the time that we should “reinvent” ourselves to stay relevant. Or that we should ignore or dismiss aspects of our careers that no longer seem to “fit” with what we're doing now. I'm not sure we can truly “reinvent” ourselves, nor should we. Instead, we should embrace how we evolve over time - and actually seek out ways to challenge ourselves to evolve! In this episode, Diane Diaz, our lead speaking coach, joins me for a lively and insightful conversation about the difference between reinvention and evolution. We explore why embracing your full self - quirks, career twists, and even those moments that feel “messy” - is essential for authenticity and personal branding. Diane shares how her Ironman journey continues to influence her life, even years later, and I reflect on bringing my tech background into Speaking Your Brand's evolution. You'll learn: Why “reinvention” might not be the right word (and why evolution feels more authentic) The importance of challenging yourself - even when it feels uncomfortable How to embrace all aspects of your past, from childhood passions to career pivots, to shape your personal brand What saying “yes” to unexpected opportunities (hello, comedy sets!) can do for your growth This episode is full of personal stories and actionable takeaways to help you think about what's next for you. Whether it's launching a podcast, tackling public speaking, delivering a TEDx talk, or simply trying something new, it's never too late to evolve. This episode was filmed in one of the beautiful studios on the campus of Full Sail University, where Diane and I have been teaching business and marketing classes since 2009. In this episode, I speak with Carol Cox, founder and CEO of Speaking Your Brand. Carol is a powerhouse when it comes to helping entrepreneurs and professionals create impactful presentations and thought leadership platforms. We discuss the concept of the "Expert Trap" and how it affects public speakers and entrepreneurs alike. Carol shares valuable insights on overcoming self-doubt, perfectionism, and imposter syndrome to truly connect with your audience. Key Takeaways: Avoiding the Expert Trap: Don't feel the need to pack every fact and detail into your talk. Focus on what transformation your audience needs and weave personal stories to make your message relatable. Emotional Resonance: The stories you are most reluctant to share often have the greatest impact. Make sure your story includes specific details and emotional elements to deeply connect with your audience. Overcoming Perfectionism: Strategies such as finding a trusted person to discuss your ideas, accepting nerves as part of the process, and even getting involved in supportive communities can make a big difference. Are you an introvert? If so, do you wonder if you are at a disadvantage as a speaker? There's a common misperception that most speakers are extroverts. But, from my admittedly very unscientific survey, many speakers I know are introverts. We think that as introverts we won't be as engaging or charismatic or energetic. Perhaps we've seen speakers we admire and we assume they're extroverts. I'm an introvert and I grew up quite shy, yet I found that public speaking was a great way for me to connect with other people. In this episode, Diane Diaz and I talk about: Why we became public speakers even though we're introverts and we were shy as kids What being an introvert teaches you The strengths you have as an introvert as a speaker Why speaking feels like a better fit than social media for many introverts Our tips for attending and speaking at conferences as an introvert We're wrapping up the podcast series we've been around executive speaking. I'm taking you behind the scenes to share what worked, what didn't, and what's next for Speaking Your Brand in the areas of speaking, visibility, this podcast, and the business in general. I also reveal what I've learned from reading and watching Marie Kondo and how I'm applying that not only to my house (my holiday break project!) but also to Speaking Your Brand. From Barbie and the Super Models to Beyonce and Taylor, women and the influence they have on culture and the economy are being seen and talked about everywhere. Since here at Speaking Your Brand we're all about amplifying and championing women's voices and advocating for gender equality, we figured it was time to give our own hot takes. Along with all the positive gains women have made, we know that there has also been a considerable backlash, both culturally and legally, most noticeably in the overturning of Roe v. Wade last year and in the states that have since passed laws restricting women's reproductive health care rights. It's easy (and accurate) to blame lawmakers and voters who vocally support such restrictions and want to turn the tide back. But what about those who do support women yet do so in myopic ways? That's why I call "country club feminism." In this episode, Diane Diaz and I talk about: The “rad trad” movement on TikTok and what it means about feminism How we define feminism The Barbie movie, from the visual impact to the satire to the overt feminist message Taylor Swift and the backlash she's receiving for being a powerful, independent woman as she's dating an NFL player The new documentary “The Super Models” on AppleTV+ and what it says about female beauty and power What we're calling “country club feminism”, how it reinforces the status quo, and what to do instead Clearly, we are using our voices and that's what we want you to do too! (This episode was recorded on October 5, 2023.) We're doing a NEW workshop series this fall live on Zoom. I talk a lot about the power of public speaking for building brand awareness, generating leads, and becoming known in your industry. The other power of public speaking is to influence social change. Throughout history, public speakers have inspired us about what's possible, from JFK's moon speech to MLK's I have a dream. TED speakers have done this for us for the past 15+ years: getting us to think differently about important issues. When one of our former clients and Thought Leader Academy grads, Tanya Golash-Boza, emailed me a few months ago about collaborating with her on a project, I jumped at the chance. Tanya decided to put on an event called Change the World Through Research through the University of California Washington Program (UCDC), where Tanya is the Executive Director. We worked closely with the selected faculty members to create their 10-minute TED-style talks to showcase their research. I know it was a challenge for them to condense all that they know into 10 minutes - which is where we came in as their coaches! We helped them identify their throughline, integrate their personal stories (so important!), and create a talk that took the audience along their journey of discovery. I invited Tanya on the podcast to talk about: Why she decided to put on this event for faculty to share their research Why she wanted them to do 10-minute TED-style talks instead of traditional presentations Why she wanted to collaborate with us at Speaking Your Brand to provide coaching and training for the speakers The importance of integrating personal stories, even in research/policy-based talks Lessons for event organizers How the event went and what's next Check out my LinkedIn post with photos of the speakers at https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7077625577079218176/. About My Guest: Tanya Golash-Boza is the Executive Director of the University of California Washington Center and a Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Merced. She is the author of six books that engage with issues such as racism, immigration policy, human rights, and race in Latin America. Her latest book, to be published with the University of California Press, is: Before Gentrification: The Creation of DC's Racial Wealth Gap. Tanya's work deepens our understanding of systems of oppression and exploitation. She has spent her scholarly career working to understand how racism intersects with capitalism and how our legal system creates and upholds inequities. She uses this knowledge to tell stories of people and of systems to help colleagues, students, readers, and listeners understand how racism and capitalism structure our lives and what we need to do to change this country and the world. Show Notes On today's episode of Entrepreneur Money Stories we have the pleasure of welcoming Carol Cox, an esteemed entrepreneur, thought leader, and Democratic political analyst, who has been making waves in the speaking industry. In this episode, we explore Carol's transformative work with women who have been in business for several years and are seeking to take their ventures to the next level. Whether their expertise lies in psychology, STEM, leadership, or other domains, Carol guides these women in crafting signature talks that fuse personal mission and storytelling, creating an authentic and resonant connection with their audiences. Building to Paid Speaking Engagements One common dilemma among aspiring speakers is the uncertainty surrounding the value and significance of their stories. Carol highlights the importance of speaking from the heart, focusing on what truly matters to you, and weaving a thread that aligns with your business. By enabling the audience to feel and believe in their potential, a speaker can truly make a lasting impact. While lead generation often serves as the initial motivation for many people entering the speaking arena, Carol emphasizes the power of speaking at conferences and local groups that genuinely resonate with one's audience. As a speaker's reputation grows, opportunities for speaking engagements will arise, providing the chance to negotiate fees and establish a solid financial foundation. Why Add Public Speaking to Your Repertoire? While podcasting offers an excellent platform for honing speaking skills, Carol reminds us that speaking in front of a live audience brings a distinct set of challenges. Public speaking, often cited as a common fear, can profoundly enhance personal growth and self-confidence. Carol herself identifies as a speaker rather than a writer, encouraging individuals to verbalize their thoughts to facilitate problem-solving and self-discovery. Through sharing a personal story of her own journey, Carol reveals the transformative power of speaking and how it led to the creation of Speaking Your Brand®, her groundbreaking venture. Can You Be a Writer and Speaker? Carol firmly believes that one can excel as both a speaker and a writer. She recalls working with a client who beautifully transposed their jointly created signature talk into a written format. However, she cautions that writing and speaking require different approaches, as the spoken word possesses a unique cadence and rhythm. Transferring written content into a speech demands careful consideration and adaptation. Considering Pricing Another critical aspect Carol addresses is the money mindset associated with speaking engagements. Many women tend to undervalue their services, charging less than they should. While speaking fees may vary depending on the audience, event, and organizers, Carol suggests keynote speakers should consider a minimum fee ranging from $2,500 to $3,500, with experienced speakers able to command up to $10,000. For workshops and training, a minimum fee of $2,500 is recommended, which can increase to $15,000 and beyond. It is crucial to recognize that speaking engagements are a value exchange, where the speaker's expertise and experience deliver tangible benefits to the audience. To ensure fair compensation, Carol advises speakers to list their pricing on their websites, promoting transparency and allowing potential clients to make informed decisions based on their budgets. Additionally, when considering speaking engagements for exposure, it is important to assess whether the audience aligns with your target clientele, if you will have access to valuable photos and videos, and whether the event host advocates for you. By tracking the speaking engagements and measuring client conversions, speakers can identify the events that yield the best results and tailor their future choices accordingly. Carol's Money Mindset In the closing segment of this episode, Carol shares her personal experiences and the ups and downs of her money mindset as a long-term business owner. She highlights the significance of valuing the services she provides and pricing her business accordingly. With the advent of the pandemic, Carol's company swiftly adapted to virtual speaking and thought leadership, emphasizing the importance of becoming a thought leader in one's industry. Taking permission for oneself to be a thought leader and pushing boundaries to advance conversations and ask profound questions are vital aspects of establishing oneself as a true catalyst for change. Join us for this captivating conversation with Carol Cox, as she empowers women to find their voices, embrace their stories, and activate ideas for change. Discover the transformative potential of public speaking, gain insights into pricing your services, and uncover the path to becoming a thought leader in your industry. This episode airs the week of our 4th of July holiday in the United States, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to re-air one of my favorite episodes. If you want to go from being a good speaker to a great one, there are key elements to infuse into your content and delivery. Three years ago, during the July 4th holiday weekend of 2020, I was at home with not much to do since we were all still in the throes of the COVID-19 social distancing. Luckily, that weekend, “Hamilton: The Musical” (filmed from the Broadway production) aired on Disney+. I was instantly transfixed. I knew I would like the play, but didn't realize I was going to love it. In this episode, I talk about “Hamilton” the play and the production and what we can learn from it as speakers. Why study the play? After all, as speakers, we're not acting in a play or singing in a musical. We're speaking to grow our audiences, build our businesses, generate leads, get paid. I don't know about you, but I've seen a lot of so-so and boring presentations. Your presentations shouldn't be flat - they can be fun and engaging and they should be layered - and speak to universal themes. In this episode, I share what I saw as I watched “Hamilton” as well as what I learned from reading the amazing book called “Hamilton: The Revolution” that gives behind the scenes of the creation and production of the musical. You can listen to this episode whether you've seen Hamilton or not. If you haven't, this episode will hopefully inspire you to watch it! (This episode originally aired in November 2020 as episode 197. It's a must-listen!) About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. As women, we are all too familiar with the societal expectations imposed on us from a young age. Both implicitly and explicitly, we are told how we should look and act and what roles we should embody. This pressure often leads to a struggle for many women, as we try to conform to these external demands while grappling with our own unique identities. But there comes a transformative moment when we decide to break free from these constraints and embrace our authentic selves. This moment of self-acceptance and empowerment is not only liberating, but it also paves the way for us to lead more fulfilling and successful lives. To conclude our podcast series for Women's History Month, we're delving into the topic of self-perception and its impact on our personal and professional lives. I hit the “easy” button earlier this year. I say this not as an excuse but as a wake-up call for myself. It was May of this year and we had an incredible group of women join our Thought Leader Academy - and I couldn't help but notice that almost all of them looked like me (white). This is in no way to discount how much I've enjoyed having each of them in the program, seeing their progress, and being incredibly proud and excited to see how they're going to make positive changes in their communities and industries. And yet I also recognized that something was lost by not having a diversity of races and backgrounds in our program because I know how much we learn from each other's experiences, perspectives, and ideas. At our team meeting that month, our executive assistant Solita Roberts pointed this out. I knew without reservation that I was responsible for this. I wanted to make sure I was doing what I should be doing to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment and to show up in the places where the women don't all look like me. This is a very important and powerful conversation Solita and I have about: Why it was easy for me to hit the “easy” button for where I showed up in the first half of this year - and the results that led to My concerns about not wanting to be seen as a “white savior” parachuting into other groups Solita's suggestions on how to show up in communities to empower them My 3 big takeaways: self-awareness; intentionality; and collective effort About My Guest: Solita Roberts is the creator of Style To Impact, an image consulting company that advises Women of Color and entrepreneurs on how to transform their image and style to authentically reflect their individuality and confidence. Get ready for on-air coaching on pivoting your brand and business from pair of hands to sought-after expert with my guest Dianna Deeney. In today's episode, you'll be a fly on the wall as Dianna and I tap into her ideal business model (which isn't what she initially had), her unique superpowers, and how she can stand out for the clients she wants to serve. We also brainstormed different ways to position some of the program ideas she has been percolating on. You'll hear it all in real-time! Dianna and I had a unique business, "meet cute." We were both at a speaking skills intensive retreat hosted by Speaking Your Brand, which was an amazing experience for so many reasons. One of my fellow participants was Dianna, a quality engineering consultant who seemed like she already knew me when I met her. And she did! It turns out she had found me online last year and bought one of my courses. She shared with me how she was working hard on transitioning from a "pair of hands" to an expert advisor, and I thought it would be great to have her on my podcast and dive into that conversation. What sealed the deal for me was when she got up in front of the group to practice her signature talk. I could tell from meeting Dianna how brilliant she is as an engineer. But when she got up on stage, she was a natural with a wicked sense of humor. My thought was, "man, she has a unique combo of skills – I would love to get my branding hands on." So, I begged Dianna to let me put her on the branding hot seat for my podcast, and she graciously agreed. In this episode, you'll hear: Real-time brand positioning work based off of Dianna's unique differentiation How you can take the strengths from our past and create a new business that reflects your superpower(s) The difference between intention and goals and why you need to hold onto intentions as our business evolves How to build a business that allows you to craft the life you need and want How to get to the root of your why so you can create a brand position that accurately reflects what you want from your business and attracts your ideal client If my other guests inspired you, you're going to love Dianna! My "Owning Your Strengths" series brought you guests that have discovered how to build a business out of the best of why they are and what they offer the world. They've gone beyond the WHAT-ifs and experienced the magic of working with someone like me who packages their brilliance and gives them words to express it. Hear that work in real-time on today's episode. Where to dive in: [7:09] Hear about Dianna's engineering background, the "why" that pushed her to start her own business, and her need to rebrand [12:40] Hear what changed in Dianna's life and prompted her rebrand [17:42] Dianna shares how changes in her life inform how she wants to shift her business and brand [20:30] Dianna explores her ideal client if she "had it all her way" and how it informs her business model [27:27] We explore the different sides of Dianna that reflect her superpowers [35:33] Why Dianna needs to do a market scan and what steps she can take to do this review [43:55] How to test out whether a course is a good idea before spending time and dollars on development [49:14] Hear what Dianna would tell herself when she was just starting out Next steps: Connect with Dianna if you are product design engineer looking for resources, practical advice, and problem-solving techniques to strategically apply quality and reliability engineering methods to product design. About my guest: Dianna Deeney is the host of the Quality during DesignSM Podcast and is the founder of Quality during DesignSM. She coaches product development engineers about awareness and use of quality and reliability methods during the design development process. She is an engineer, a senior quality professional, and an active member of ASQ holding certificates as a CQE, CRE, CQA, and CMQ/OE. Dianna believes that design engineers do not need to become quality or reliability engineers to use those methods and benefit from quality thinking. She has seen that using quality as a strategic asset during concept and design development improves the design and the design process and helps design engineers to be recognized as star performers. Her mission is to bridge product managers and designers (entry-level to seasoned) to the world's quality initiatives and quality-minded people. When you talk about what's important to you and your industry, people will listen. Especially when the message is tied to your mission and vision and it's something that fills a gap. (No matter what you think about the online space, there will always be gaps. There's room for us all.) And while it's important to do some work to decide what that message is and where you'll share it, the most important thing is to just start sharing it. It doesn't have to be perfect and it's okay if it shifts and changes over time. This week on the podcast, Carol Cox is sharing how to develop your own thought leadership through the four layers of thought leadership. She talks about her own experience in losing her voice and confidence when she was front and center and how that story connects the personal and connection…which is exactly how to approach thought leadership. We need more women to be thought leaders and to step up to put themselves out there. And you don't need to be degreed and credentialed to be an expert at something. One thing that helps? A support system. And the ability to avert your eyes from any comments and criticism you'll get. Listen in for more from Carol and how podcasting fits into it all. Have you experienced trauma? If you think you haven't, think again. And you know what? Your trauma story may feel like it crippled you, but it qualifies you for the consulting and coaching business you're creating. My guest today is Mary Beth Simon, who is the founder of Niche Partnership Consulting. Mary Beth and I met last fall when we both participated in Speaking Your Brand's Thought Leadership Academy. She turned my head when she shared the story of a traumatic event from her childhood that wound up protecting her body and her life. In this episode, Mary Beth and I talk candidly about the challenges of our lives and how those struggles actually turned into strengths. Key Takeaways: Go to therapy. Heal. If you see one thing you get emotional about over and over again, it's a place that needs healing. Come out stronger, smarter, and on fire. Part of dropping shame is dropping shame about mental health care. Make sure lifestyle is conducive to stress management and overall health. Don't be the internalized abuser to yourself. Be the opposite! Put your oxygen mask on first. Taking care of yourself is not a negative. Don't believe the lie even if people don't respect those boundaries. Listen to your voice instead of allowing other people to tell your who you are. "70 hr work weeks don't make you a valuable person." What cripples us, qualifies us. The advice Mary Beth would give her younger self, "You are stronger than you realize. Everything will work out fine. You need to trust your instincts because they will protect you and lead you in the right direction."
