Today's Guest: Chazeray Jackson As a teen, my High School Football Coach made a positive impact on me! Through my influences and other mentors progressing into my adulthood, I learned the importance of character, leadership, and teamwork through sports and life experiences... Now, I get to take that same message of hope to students, parents, and educators around the country on platforms such as: Non-Profit Organizations, College level, Middle/High school level, Athletic Sport Teams and Churches! I was born in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, on May 28, 1987. I grew up in a low-income area, where everyday living had its ups and downs. Throughout my grade school years, I experienced a lot of altercations from incidents such as: being bullied and picked on by other kids, as well as other red flag behaviors at school. Those childhood experiences affected me progressing into adult years…causing a lot of low confidence, self-esteem problems, developing false identities, substance abuse & being incarcerated due to poor behavior and decision making... Which all contributed to unresolved tragic events and lack of self-love. But, despite all the trials, I always had a strong inner voice that reminded me that I am worthy of greatness! I can proudly say I love myself, I am confident and I am fulfilled in every department of my life. The difficulties I have overcome, has made me the Godly man I am today! Today's Guest: Lanie Matula My name is Lanie Matula and I was born and raised in Austin, Texas! I have been teaching 4th grade for five years and love every minute of it! My students are my world! They are loving, caring, compassionate, inquisitive, and sometimes hyper! As a class, we build a community so we can rely on one another at any point and time. We build trust with restorative circles and hold each other accountable for our actions! When the day ends, we all know we care for each other and will be there for one another no matter what. I work with a very diverse population, where most students come from low-income families. The schools I’ve worked at are considered to be Title 1 schools, meaning that they receive federally funded support. For some of my students, school is the only place they will receive a meal and have as a safe space with someone to trust. Throughout the year I personally purchase my students supplies, backpacks, coats, clothes, books and snacks. Teaching comes with its own struggles – but being a lesbian teacher tends to have more. I am out to my students and their parents, and it has had its hardships and challenges, but this year showed me that what I am doing IS right. For me and for those students that might need reassurance that it’s okay to be ‘different,’ that those feelings you have are normal, and that you don’t have to hide if you don’t want to. Here’s why: I had a student tell me that they were scared of life and who they were until they found out I was a lesbian. She smiled at me and said, ‘Thank you. Thank you so much for being you. You made me realize that I wasn’t weird. That something wasn’t wrong with me. You saved me and I can’t thank you enough for that.’ If I can save one child’s life, that’s enough for me. This next year I would like to start a leadership and support program for anyone that would like to join! I want to make sure that the students of my school have a safe place to go to. All children need to learn about acceptance, empathy, kindness, communication and love. Join the “Acknowledge Someone” Movement! FRED KOEPP Fred is a Speaker, High School Soccer Coach, and Student Success Agent who believes in the power of acknowledgement. In seventh grade, he was bullied to the point of taking his own life, but joined an amazing student council where he heard a speaker who helped spark a change in his attitude toward the people bullying him. Instead of trying to fight back, Fred said, "If you need anything, let me know." The bullying ended soon after. Since seventh grade, he has focused on increasing community within the schools he was attending. He led his student council in ninth grade and was class president his senior year of high school. He started doing activities for students every Monday in high school such as "Trivia-Monday", "Life-Saver Monday", and "Selfie-Monday" to help build fellowship between his peers. In college, he was a Resident Assistant that focused on building community through events and connecting in the lunch room. He created a table where he would invite people sitting by themselves or in small groups to come join him. The group caught on and eventually grew to have over 50 members. He called it the Table of Love. Fred is thankful that he was taught the power of acknowledgement and would now like to return the favor and help others find their own Table of Love. Today's Guest: Dina Loannou In her ‘day job’ Dina works as a Teacher Educator and Trainer at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) in the field of ESOL. She’s been a teacher for over 22 years - or longer if you count the times she played teacher as a child. Dina is also founder of Lessons-in-Self, she is at her happiest sharing her life’s journey, by inspiring and empowering others to becoming the person they are destined to be through her transformational Education for Life programmes, which she’s presented at teachers’ conferences in Switzerland and the UK as well as teaching her methodology at schools.. She’s developed programmes that aim to support and develop wellbeing, or a healthy sense of Self which can be used by both teachers and learners alike. Though on first appearance these activities appear unassuming, they have the creative potential to reach a much deeper level. Linguistically, they are so simple they can be used with almost any level and teaching context within an ESOL context too. Teacher burnout is increasing and is an international epidemic (Rankin 2016), with this in mind Dina’s current programme aims to support teachers who feel (or think, but not sure) they’re going through burnout. The programme is based on Positive Psychology and Wellbeing interventions and tools. "I believe that burnout happens for a reason. My mission is to explore the positive effects of burnout as a catalyst for change and to help teachers go from burnout to brilliance.” Join the “Acknowledge Someone” Movement! Today's Guest: Cheryl Meyer Cheryl's message is simple, “eliminate toxins, and heal your chronic pain. Own your own health.I got sick and didn't want a life of pain and pills." Thus began an odyssey that culminated in Meyer’s writing the manual she wishes she’d hadwhen she got sick. In her award winning book It Feels Good to Feel Good: Learn to EliminateToxins, Reverse Inflammation and Feel Great Again, Meyer explains how she discovered shewas suffering from inflammation and autoimmune disease, how she actively searched out, purged, and replaced toxins in her life, how she found the right doctor (a Functional MD), andhow she finally returned to wellness. Eliminating hundreds of toxins was a big step in reducing Cheryl’s chronic pain. Eliminatingtoxins was a critical step in healing her leaky gut, which is the cause of inflammation. As sheregained her health, she returned to school and became a health coach to share her newknowledge with others. She comments, “I wrote this book for people with autoimmune diseaseand inflammation, but really, it’s for everyone. Inflammation is a root cause of many of ourillnesses and disease, cancer, heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depression, skinailments, Type I and Type II diabetes, possibly even autism. Today's Guest: Jacqueline Torres Jacqueline hails from the San Fernando Valley, roughly 20 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles, a product of a hard working immigrant family . Although she has always maintained a strong affinity for drawing, she never partook in a single Art class until she began her studies at CSUN (California State University Northridge). While attending CSUN, she acquired her B.A. in Fine Art, along with a minor in Chicano Studies, as well as her single subject teaching credential. During her time teaching at several school sites, “Jackie” developed a wealth of experience while working with students representing a variety of demographics. Recently, she returned to her alma mater -San Fernando High School- where she currently teaches Ceramics, happily giving back to her community. Jackie finds a great deal of comfort working in familiar territory. At San Fernando, she has been given a chance to offer her students an opportunity to see themselves reflected in an educator and leadership capacity. Currently, 73% of the students in the LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) are Latinx, and another 15% represent other ethnic [so-called] “minorities”. With 66% of the teachers also representing people-of-color -43% of whom are Latinx- the LAUSD boasts the highest average in the nation. In many other regions of the U.S., roughly 80% of teachers are Caucasian, while students-of-color comprise more than half of the 51 million kids who are enrolled within the school systems. This is significant to Jackie, who views her role as an educator as integral towards dealing with matters of social justice. She works diligently to empower her students by teaching them the importance of the artistic and cultural contributions championed by people who share their roots. Evening out the educational playing field is no small task, but working in Title 1 schools, she tries to give her students as much access as other students in better resourced schools she’s worked in by offering Advanced Placement studio classes and taking them on a variety of field trips local and as far as Europe on one occasion. Jackie doesn’t shy away from discussing politics and promoting social awareness trying to make her students active participants in their communities. She started a social justice club in her prior school regularly meeting and taking actions every week, organizing events and even participating in an immigration march with her students. Jackie set out to be the teacher she would have wanted to have and works harder to be the teacher that so many of her students need.. When she is not teaching, Jacqueline is painting and exhibiting her work. She also enjoys traveling, playing soccer, and learning her mother’s recipes. Today's Guest: Izzy Byers Mary Beth "Izzy" Byers is a Kansas-based vocalist, trumpet player, and composer. She started singing as soon as she could talk and found her passion for songwriting as a freckle-faced youngster. Izzy has had the opportunity to open for the Pentatonix, perform at the New York Voices Vocal Jazz Camp, and share the stage with many stars in jazz, including Connaitre Miller of Afro Blue. Through the years, she has also taught various ages of private students and directed art classes for at-risk youth. After a couple years, she decided to change course and thought she would never return to the music lifestyle. Little did she know how many passionate musicians she would meet and how many kids she would teach. Eventually, she uncovered her love of music again, performing on 3 different continents and rediscovering a joy for creating again. Miss Izzy is back with a vengeance, releasing a new album in 2019 entitled "Discovering Home." This album will highlight her travels, experiences, and growth as a woman and a musician. She has tastefully combined all the different music she heard around the world, RnB, neo soul, gospel, and jazz to create a fusion unlike any other. Izzy is teaming up with the Wasamara' Trio , to complete this unique project. She is ready and excited to share these creations with the world! Today's Guest: Natalie Gray Growing up as a national park ranger’s daughter, Natalie was raised in our nation’s most beautiful places…andsome of our poorest schools. As she moved through high school in Van Horn, TX, she became increasinglyaware of this. She was taught to type and take shorthand, and her school was visited by every division ofthe military, a host of trade schools, but never a single college. When she got to the University of Texas, shefelt acutely the gap between what she had learned in HS and what her friends from more affluentcommunities had learned – and that realization led her to spend her career working to level the playingfield. After completing an EdM at Harvard, she was intent on getting into the classroom, and taught fifth grade ata private school for three years. What she learned there in terms of how more privileged children areeducated was staggering – and fueled her passion for helping change the realities that made the gapbetween what “school” meant to kids in Van Horn versus what it meant for kids at Fort Worth Country DaySchool so wide. As a teacher, She discovered Summerbridge (now the Breakthrough Collaborative) and went on to helplaunch two sites in Cincinnati and Fort Worth. She then led a site in Manchester, NH for seven years, served as a national program officer for two years, and, ultimately, helped open an innovation on the model ather own alma mater, the University of Texas. Natalie worked at what is now Breakthrough Central Texas until 2008 when she joined Teach For America’s Human Assets team. While there, she designed and led ED professional development and served as the Vice President of Staff Learning and Development, leading a large, dispersed team to deliver staff training on topics including management, leadership, and diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. She is now working as an independent contractor and has been fortunate to work withseveral organizations to produce meaningful work that supports their impact. Enjoy today's episode! We continue where we left off last week with John's story time segment where he talks about a time when he was speaking and a student had a meaningful interaction with him and the rest of the school. John’s mission is to help others take radical ownership for every element of their lives. He is passionate and driven for cultural change for students and wherever people desire to do better than yesterday. He is the Founder and President of Life that Counts, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which has helped bring in more than $1,250,000 in funding for Positive Youth Development Solutions in it’s less than two-year-old existence. He is the author of Rules4Success, developer of the B.E.L.I.E.V.E. curriculum for peer-based mentoring, and is the creator of the HERO Training 21 Day Compassion Challenge. He’s delivered over 1,200 keynotes, workshops, and breakouts, and he gives around 150 assembly talks per school year for audiences of students and educational professionals. He speaks, trains, and consults on overcoming adversity, youth culture, effective leadership, and positive youth cultural development. He is a certified provider for Peer Mentoring by Friends First as a part of a grant-funded initiative provided through the Office of Justice and Juvenile Delinquency Prevention. John is a professional member of the National Speakers Association, a guest columnist for YouthMinistry.com, and a content provider for the Leadercast NOW library. His favorite thing to do is to help schools change their culture. In addition to schools across America, John has consulted, trained, or spoken for the Alabama Department of Education, The University of Alabama, The Alabama Revenue Commissioners Association, RUSKEN Corporation, The Fellowship of Christian Athletes of America, Mission Discovery, and a host of others. He is a graduate of Birmingham Southern with work on Youth Culture and holds undergraduate degrees in Theology and Communications and has Master level training in Business Administration. Having grown up in an environment of poverty, violence, and substance abuse, and never having met his father, John contends that there is hope for the individual and the organization that is willing to invest the time and energy to create remarkable outcomes. He believes that our future work must address the need in creating global leaders, in all sectors of human exchange, who are competent in IQ (Intellectual Quotient), EQ (Emotional Quotient), SQ (Social Quotient), and CQ (Cultural Quotient). John’s dream in life, early on, was for his wife to know, be loved by, cared for, protected, and supported by her husband. He aims for the same with his children. As Alexis’ husband of 15 years and dad to two boys, Jayden and Joshua, John is getting to live his dream.
