In this episode, we are honored to welcome Detective Michael Collazo as he shares his journey—from his early years and decision to join the Marine Corps to his path in law enforcement and the day that made his name known across the nation: March 27, 2023. Along the way, he and Brink, a former Nashville police officer, swap stories, share laughs, and reflect on the unique experiences that come with wearing the badge. This past January, Michael was awarded the Medal of Valor by President Biden for his heroic actions at The Covenant School, where he and four fellow officers ran toward danger and stopped the threat. Michael takes us inside that day, detailing his mindset during the critical minutes leading up to the school, the decisive moments inside, and the weight of what came after. We discuss how law enforcement processes trauma, the challenges of healing, and why preparation is key in the face of unthinkable events.

Hello Watchers! Originally, your friendly neighborhood producer Lady H wanted to discuss the Spider-verse abstractly: discussing Spyder-Byte and Jessica Drew during an episode of Black women, femme, and nonbinary superheroes. And then Lady H got a message from Spider Society X (Black Marvel, Mme Lazet, Miss V, Anwar Starwind, and Mo) that we needed to do an episode on this movie and the animated Spider-verse. Who ignores a message from Spider Society X? Not Lady H, and hopefully not you. This is Part 2 of our two part story about Woodland Park, Colorado, a bucolic little town in the shadow of Pikes Peak. A place where the schools have been overtaken by a group of people who know little to nothing about education. They also give zero f*cks about the faculty and staff of the school district. It's a crazy story that gets worse by the day-mass exodus of teachers, families pulling their kids out, and things like the teachers being made members of a union-ish organization that they didn't give any indication they'd like to be part of. And in Colorado, schools are locally controlled-meaning the state can't intervene. The acting superintendent can run rampant, with the support of the board. The only way out is electing a new board. We spoke to Logan Ruths, the former records custodian for Woodland Park, who has been embroiled in this situation as it has unfolded, and Matt Gawlowski, parent/activist and developer of the "Support Woodland Park Schools" website (https://supportwpschools.com/). It's a story you don't want to skip. As the title says-it's a cautionary tale. For every single district out there. Be sure to check out Miss V's terrific Substack, "Over Drinks!" If you heard of a corporation that had secret meetings, non-disclosure of public documents, and a company policy that included a gag order for employees' personal social media, you might say "wow, that's a pretty toxic environment." Now...suppose you found out it was actually a school district? Shocking, right? Well, not so much these days. We are talking about the very real Woodland Park, Colorado school district, where the interim superintendent, despite being recalled as a member of a board of education elsewhere, was the ONLY candidate considered. Where administrators and teachers are leaving in droves. Where a charter school has been placed in the middle school building, causing the sixth grade to be moved-without a discussion with building principals or teachers. And where the Records Custodian-the person who handles all of the Open Records Requests-was unceremoniously terminated. Strangely, after he voiced objections to some of the less-than-open practices of the District, including instructing him to not fulfill requests. We spoke to Logan Ruths, the former records custodian for Woodland Park, and Matt Gawlowski, parent/activist and developer of the "Support Woodland Park Schools" website. It's a story you don't want to skip. Because...it could happen to you. Be sure to check out Miss V's terrific Substack, "Over Drinks!" It always sounds so glamorous, going abroad to teach. You get to travel, learn about a different country and culture, try out different food and clothing...great, right? However, just like everything else that is reality and not a fairy tale, there is two sides to the story. Meet Jessica Graham, an international teacher (up until recently) who has taught in UAE, Vietnam, and China. She tells us all about her experiences-how she started out with this gig, positives and negatives, how she got locked out of China during the pandemic, while her belongings were there. Education in Florida. What can we say about that? So many things. Book banning, "don't say gay," and the latest, a principal being asked to resign because parents objected to Michelangelo's "David" being shown in an art class. And the leader of this pack, Ron DeSantis, the governor of the Florida and expected presidential candidate, just keeps the hits coming. We talked to Mia, a Florida teacher, and heard all about how the new education policies in Florida have impacted teaching, and job satisfaction. And how having DeSantis as your governor makes a horrible time for teachers even worse. So yeah, we're jealous of your weather. But hell no, we are not jealous of your governor!! Stacey takes us through the process of blogging as a side hustle that actually MAKES MONEY, and doesn't force you to ask your friends to buy candles/makeup/leggings. And guess what? In addition to bringing in some cash, blogging might just give you the outlet you need to feel happier, and less available for the drudgery of extra "teaching" responsibilities (I'm talking to you, door decorating). After first grade teacher Abby Zwerner was shot by a six year old student in her classroom several weeks ago, the question that kept coming up was "How?" How did a six year old get access to a gun? How did no one know he had it at school? Why wasn't something done? And then we heard-it was known. It was reported to administration. And nothing was done. Teachers started talking, telling their own stories of violence in their schools. Of worsening student behavior, particularly since the pandemic began. And of administration sending kids back to the classrooms of teachers they had, only yesterday, punched in the face. There are many answers to the question, "Why are teachers leaving the profession?" Lack of respect, low pay - but also feeling like no one is listening to those in the trenches. In this episode, we chat with Kelley, who has had fellowships with a variety of education advocacy organizations - one of which has led to a new position where she teaches parttime, and also works on curriculum for her district. Enabling a classroom teacher to expand their universe, and lend their expertise to something that will impact teachers and students? Yes, please! Works for her, works for her colleagues. And it's a great way to help with retention. We also hear about the Rubiks Cube competition that Miss V. attended (with no screaming parents or thrown cubes!), and talk about our favorite desserts. By the way, here's the recipe for Yo Miss's fave: Rose's Rice Pudding Ingredients: 1 cup raw rice 2.5 quarts milk 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla Combine rice, 1/2 cup sugar and 2 quarts of milk in a fairly large pot, and bring to a simmer. Cook for approximately 1/5 hours, stirring frequently until rice is soft and mixture thickens. In a bowl, beat the eggs with the other 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 quart of milk, and the vanilla. Add to mixture and cook for app. 5 minutes. Pour into 9" x 13" pan. Our very own Miss V is taking on the 20 Minute Back To School Reading Challenge for the Trevor Project! Teacher shortage, no subs, book banning....and those are just today's headlines. It's ugly out there. And yet, when we asked "What are you looking forward to this school year?" you did what teachers do - you found something to hang onto, something to get you out of bed and into the classroom. And not just the kids either-new roles, new projects, a chance to light a spark in some kid, somewhere. We have tried our best to keep this episode positive - not easy, since there's so much crap going on - because if teachers can walk past that administrator who's never been in a classroom and carry on with their day, we certainly can dedicate an episode to the strength it takes to remain positive, in this chaotic and unrelentingly negative time in education. Speaking of making a positive difference, our very own Miss V is taking on the 20 Minute Back To School Reading Challenge for the Trevor Project! We can't help it when something rubs us the wrong way. Disclaimer: For legal reasons some of the names of the people involved in this story have been altered. ”Steve,” exclaimed the supply teacher, Miss Personality Vacuum. ”Yes, Miss,” replied Steve. ”Frank.” ”Here, Miss,” replied Frank. ”George.” ”Yes, Miss,” replied George. ”Stacey.” ”Yes, Miss, here” replied Stacey. ”Dickhead,” continued Miss Personality Vacuum. There was silence, only broken by the slight sound of heads turning and necks rubbing against shirt collars. ”Dickhead,” Miss Personality Vacuum stated once more, this time accompanied by a vague look out across the classroom. Still only skin on cotton could be heard, but the turned heads might as well have been drawing an arrow pointing straight at Dickhead. ”Dickhead, if that is you, please can you reply,” asked Miss Personality Vacuum quite politely. ”My name isn't Dickhead,” said Dickhead with all the petulance of talking baby Jack Russell. ”I'm sorry,” said Miss V. “What is your name?” ”Dick,” sneered Dickhead. ”OK, thank you,” said Miss V, letting the tone go unpunished to just get through the register. ”Kate,” enquired Miss V. ”Aren't you going to call my name?” interrupted Dickhead. ”OK, yes,” said Miss V now a little flustered and clearly slightly annoyed but trying not to show it. “Dick.” Silence. Miss V stared at Dickhead with the kind of stare that would either turn you to stone or burn a hole straight through you. ”My name is Dickhead,” said Dickhead. I fucking hated Dickhead. And with that, Welcome to the VG247 Best Games Ever Podcast, Episode 12: Best game you hated for a very specific reason. Please do let us know what you think of the show – and if this is your first time listening, do go back to listen to the previous episodes. If you've got suggestions for topics, we'd love to hear them. I don't want to say we're scraping the barrel, but well... someone suggested “Best game with a duck” the other day and for a moment I thought it was the best idea of all time. “What is VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast?” you ask while trying to work out what Dickhead's real name was. Three syllables and could be shortened to two. That's the only clue you're getting. I expect he's gone on to star in a 30-minute panel show where people decide on the best game in a specific category, just like this podcast – although unlike this podcast, that show is likely mean spirited, clueless, and not as smart as it thinks it is. We've got some details on the show's content below (if you want to get a refresher before heading to the comments to make a wonderful, considered post or don't want to listen but do want to know what games we picked), so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll past this warning. W A R N I N G The Best Game that you hated for a very specific reason This is the topic of Episode twelve of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Here's a rundown of who picked what. Tom – Final Fantasy 7 (original release) Yes, I have picked one of the most loved games of all time, but no, I haven't gone for the reason that the game's marketing sold people a game that wasn't as it seemed. Essentially, I got stuck on disc one, OK? Maybe I was bored and really couldn't be bothered to figure out what I was meant to be doing, but in my mind the Saucer area was so bad that I just gave up. Alex – From Russia With Love Sean Connery providing his voice and likeness to a new Bond game! What could go wrong? Well, it seems the performance could. As much as Sean is loved in the classic James Bond movies, his acting in the PS2-era video game is borderline terrible. Such a shame. James – Persona 4 Persona 4 is a fantastic game where you find out that rural life can be more exciting than you ever imagined, as you solve the enigmatic case of an otherworldly killer and make the kind of friendships that last a lifetime. The only trouble is you can throw all of that away in the space of a single conversation, along with potentially hours-upon-hours of progress and invested time. Nowhere inside of the game does it tell you any of this, but you should've worked at the corner shop more, idiot. Let us know what game you'd pick and if you think James writes jokes in advance so he can read off a script? If you like the podcast, please subscribe and leave a review saying how wonderful it is, and tell all your friends. Do a tweet about it, post on Facebook, or be one of those people that walk around town with a boombox and rig it to play the latest episode at an obscene volume. We've all had students who are neurodivergent - ADHD, ODD, Dyslexia, Austism. But what is it like to discover late in life that you, the teacher, are on the autism spectrum? In our latest episode, we interview "Artie," an art teacher who was diagnosed with autism as an adult, and has found it to be a key to unlock some of the questions she's always had, about herself. We hear about her diagnosis, learn some surprising facts about autism in girls and women (for example, did you know that, rather than not feel empathy, autistic women can actually be over empathetic? We did not know that.), and discuss how she deals with the challenges that all teachers experience. We also talk about the dumbest request ever made of a group of teachers, discuss our chances of surviving the zombie apocalypse (hint: being highly effective on Danielson doesn't help), and in a related conversation, hear about Miss V's latest foray into reality television (Snowflake Mountain, anyone?)! If you would like additional information on autism and women, please reach out and we can put you in touch with resources provided by our guest. We asked you to tell us, in one sentence, about this school year. The results were consistent, not surprising, in some cases funny - but disturbing nonetheless. What is this fresh hell from which we are emerging?? Listen as Miss V and Yo Miss discuss the results of our completely unscientific survey, including quoting some of y'all, as well as Pop Quiz discoveries about our childhoods that show how we ended up this way.
