What does it truly mean to have a psychologically safe workplace and why do so many organizations struggle to create psychologically safe environments? According to research released last fall by Wiley, only 53% of individual contributors and 55% of supervisors say they feel safe taking risks at their organizations. Risk taking is a required component of creativity, problem solving, and innovation. A low threshold for risk can be concerning depending on the requirements of the job or the industry one is in. In this episode of Women Taking the Lead, we delve into the concept of psychological safety, its profound impact on team performance, the essential behaviors for creating psychological safety, and strategies to overcome challenges. I'm going to get a bit vulnerable here and be transparent that on the Women Taking the Lead podcast I have not given a lot of time to the topic of pay equity. Part of it is because I'm typically not working with women around the areas of negotiating salary. That may come up when a client of mine is being offered a promotion but typically, I'm not dealing with the issue of disparities in pay. And what my guest is going to really underscore for us today is pay equity is not something that comes about because women have good negotiating skills. I know, shocker. Because that's what we've been led to believe for a long time now. If only women would develop certain skills, there wouldn't be so much inequity. My guest Emily Aries is calling BS on that. Meet Emilie Aries: Emilie Aries is a speaker, podcaster, author, and the Founder & CEO of Bossed Up, an award-winning leadership development and career services company committed to closing the gender leadership gap. Aries has worked with leaders at Fortune 500 companies to support retention, diversity and inclusion, and human resource initiatives, and has been featured in media outlets including the Washington Post, CNN Money, Buzzfeed, and more. Her book, Bossed Up, serves as a practical roadmap for women who want to set themselves up for sustainable, long-term career success and step up as the boss of their lives. In this episode Emilie and I discuss: Current stats on pay inequities (it's not just a problem for women) Why developing negotiation skills is not solving the gender gap in pay. What has proven to be effective in closing pay gaps across genders, ages, races and abilities. What you can do on the individual, organizational and legislative level to bring about pay equity once and for all. Hello and welcome to Women Taking the Lead. I'm going to start us off by reading a quote I read not too long ago of my guest today. “As leaders in an increasingly polarized society, it's crucial that we recognize the talent within our organizations. Incredible talents are often overlooked, underutilized, or placed in situations that are bound to fail. The consequence of this is stagnant teams and underperforming businesses because our people feel disconnected. However, it's not the people who are broken; it's our organizational systems that require fixing.” That is a bold statement made by Dr. Mary-Clare Race, the President of Talking Talent. Meet Mary-Clare Race Dr. Mary-Clare Race is recognized for her remarkable career spanning four continents. She has played a pivotal role in facilitating business improvement for globally renowned organizations, including Barclays, Goldman Sachs, GSK, Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Estee Lauder Companies, as well as governmental organizations including the British Government, Cabinet Office, and the UK National Health Service. A prominent figure in her field, Dr. Race's research contributions have been published in reputable journals such as Frontiers in Psychology, Mental Illness at Work, and People & Strategy. While her expertise features in industry-leading publications including The Harvard Business Review, People Management and The Financial Times. Talking Talent, a team of business psychologists, coaches, talent specialists, and diversity leaders committed to creating workplaces where everyone feels valued and respected. With almost two decades of experience, they know that the best way to ensure business success and resiliency is by building spaces where people feel like they truly belong. Through their coaching-led approach, they help individuals and organizations develop the skills and behaviors they need to create a culture of belonging. Talking Talent has delivered award-winning DE&I programs and coaching within world-renowned organizations, including Disney, NatWest, Lloyds Bank, Citi, EY and many more. Clients have reported a 56% increase in job performance and £100 million saved each year in retention costs through a 50% reduction in the risk of staff turnover. In this episode Mary-Clare and I discussed: The history DEI and the current state of DEI efforts around the globe. The importance of considering the ecosystem vs. the individual when looking to retain talent Where companies can make investments in the coming year to see meaningful progress. How the most effective programs will both customize to the organization and personalize to the individual. Why, when psychological safety is introduced to a team or organization, the issues can appear to get worse before they get better. There are a lot of myths out there about what you need to do to be successful at work. You may already be at a point in your career where you've realized this and had to shift gears. And you may still feel like you are walking a tight rope of, for instance, needing to be more decisive but not too decisive because that can work against you as a woman. Or, advocating for yourself more but not too much because that also has consequences. On this episode of Women Taking the Lead I'm joined by Analiza Quiroz Wolf to talk about the strategies and practices that will actually lead you to success in the workplace. In this episode Analiza and I discussed: · How her own story influenced the need to debunk the myths of success and the research and experiences that went into it. · How our strategies for success often come from those who want the best for us but those strategies don't always translate into success at work. · The notion that you will be seen, acknowledged and rewarded by focusing on your responsibilities and working hard. · How growing your influence is about developing relationships with others and again doesn't involve a lot of hard work. · Letting go of leadership stereotypes so your own strengths as a leader can emerge. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about the role our stories play in our confidence journeys. When we're doing something scary, or experiencing self-doubt, too often, our story is one of disempowerment – I don't belong here, or I'm not good enough. It's a fluke, or there's been a huge mistake. But what happens when we change the story? My guest this week, Jodi Flynn, is the CEO and founder of Women Taking the Lead. Here we talk about the impact of our stories and what we can do to adopt more empowered mindsets. We also talk about the importance of consistently stretching and expanding our comfort bubbles so that they don't shrink and suffocate us.About My GuestJodi Flynn is the CEO and Founder of Women Taking the Lead, a leadership development company that works with allies, organizations, and boards to close the performance gap by attracting, developing and successfully promoting more women into senior levels of leadership. How companies support their female employees that are going through perimenopause and menopause is starting to hit the headlines. Think about it. Most women go through the menopause transition between the ages of 45 and 60. This is when women are in their professional prime. It's nearly impossible to be your best at work when you are dealing with hot flashes, fatigue and brain fog. This is especially true when there's no support for what you are going through. There are changes on the horizon, but we'll usher in these changes much more quickly if we can become active participants in the solution. For that reason, I've invited Tamsen Fadal on the Women Taking the Lead podcast. Meet Tamsen Fadal Tamsen Fadal is an Emmy award-winning newscaster and author. In addition to being the PIX11 News primetime anchor, Tamsen is an advocate for women in the next chapter of their lives. She is an Ambassador for Let's Talk Menopause, a nonprofit invested in changing the conversation around menopause, and an expert for menopause in the workplace In this episode Tamsen and I discussed: · What's going on in workplace around menopause now. · What companies can do to support their female employees who are going through menopause. · Best practices of a menopause policy. · What can individuals do to support their colleagues and get the ball rolling on making these changes in their own companies. Brad speaks with veteran journalist Sarah Stankorb about her new book Disobedient Women. Disobedient Women is not just a look at the women who have used the internet to bring down the religious power structures that were meant to keep them quiet, but also a picture of the large-scale changes that are happening within evangelical culture regarding women's roles, ultimately underscoring the ways technology has created a place for women to challenge traditional institutions from within. Have you been struggling with your wardrobe lately? During the pandemic many of us reverted to a uniform of professional top matched with yoga pants or sweatpants. We were video conference ready and that was fine when we were working from home with cameras on. Now that return-to-office, hybrid work, in-person conferences and networking events are full-steam ahead, you might be feeling less than excited about the options in your closet. Our clothes can help bolster our confidence or make us feel blah. And for many of us, our bodies changed, if ever so slightly over the last 3 years. For the past 6 months or so I've been looking at a closet full of clothes convinced I had nothing to wear. Then I met Jenny Eversole, the founder of Stylespace. Stylespace.com is a virtual styling platform to elevate your style with expert stylists. After nearly a decade running her own fashion label, she learned how personal style can make a big difference in one's confidence, happiness and overall success. Jenny founded Style Space for people to discover their best style and to look, feel, and BE their best. This is what Jenny shared with me: “Throughout the years, our lives change, and as we age, our bodies are meant to change too. With each new season of life, we have the opportunity to express this new chapter with our personal style. It takes time and learning to know what works best for us in this new stage of life. An expert stylist can be very instrumental in helping us define our style in whatever stage of life we are in.” I took Jenny up on her offer and did a session with a member of her team. I was so thrilled with the results I asked Jenny to come on the Women Taking the Lead podcast to talk about the struggle many of us are having with our closets. In this episode Jenny and I chatted about: What changed during the pandemic Styling for the office vs. Zoom (Hybrid dressing) Dressing like an executive, approachability My experience working with a stylist 5 takeaway tips you can apply today Episode Show Notes: Transcript and links mentioned in this episode.
