Voice has long been the final frontier of computing interfaces, and now with the technology of smart speakers and other voice-enabled technologies we are finally able to access what science fiction has been writing about for decades. Our guest today, Braden Ream, founder and CEO of Voiceflow, is helping create that future. Voiceflow, then known as Storyflow, was one of the first portfolio companies backed by Ripple Ventures. Back then it was a platform that helped build skills on Alexa, but has since grown to become the go-to platform for voice and chat-based interfaces and is being used by global Fortune 500 companies like USAA, McDonalds & BMW.About Braden Ream:Braden Ream is the Co-Founder and CEO of Voiceflow, a platform that helps teams design, prototype and launch voice & chat assistants. Founded in 2018, Voiceflow currently powers 300M monthly messages and is deployed across 75,000 teams. Prior to Voiceflow, Braden worked at RBC and founded a social media app.A word from our sponsor:Ripple Ventures is always focused on helping our founders and CEOs find the best partners to work with. But before we introduce any provider to our companies, we always make sure we try the product first. And when it comes to managing business expenses at Ripple, we were super excited when the team at Jeeves came knocking on our door.Jeeves helped get me and my team setup with physical and virtual credit cards in days. I was able to allow my teammates to expense items in multiple currencies allowing them to pay for anything, anywhere at any time. We weren’t asked for any personal guarantees or pay any setup or annual fees either. Not only does Jeeves save us time, but they also give us up to 3% cashback on our purchases including expenses like Google, Facebook, or AWS every month. The best part, Jeeves puts up the cash, and you settle up once every 30 days, unlike some other corporate card companies that make you pre-pay every month.Jeeves offers a truly all-in-one expense management corporate card program for international startups and we at Tank Talks could not be more excited to partner with them. How The CEO of Voiceflow Turned An Interactive Children’s Storybook Into One Of The First No-Code Tools to Build Alexa Skills and Google Actions I can remember first starting to build Alexa Skills back in 2017-2018, and researching “no-code” tools to do so. At the time, coding Alexa Skills from scratch seemed like such a long journey, that I was even talking with our CTO Joe Wallace about building our own no-code tool (aka Content Management System; aka “WordPress of Voice”) so that we could effectively roll out Voice Apps for clients easier. What got me excited were a few things. First of all, at the time, as far as I knew, nobody had done it yet. I had found one blog article on Medium.com about “how to build Alexa Skills without coding” and it featured a company called Storyflow. But when I went to Storyflow.com, the no-code tool clearly wasn’t ready for real consumer use yet, which - being in software development - I totally understand. Well, about a year after I found Storyflow.com, I really wanted to start building Alexa Skills for clients, and for Data Driven Design, and I decided to Google again - “building Alexa Skills without coding.” Again, the same Medium.com article came up. I opened it, and instantly remembered Storyflow. That next time, when I clicked on the link, I was redirected to Voiceflow.com, and it was a MUCH improved experience, and not just from a front-facing marketing website perspective, but from a SaaS product perspective. I jumped right into the tool, created an account, and started building Voice Apps. Another year-plus later, after building dozens of Alexa Skills and Google Actions using Voiceflow, I sat down with CEO Braden Ream and talked with him about his journey building an interactive children’s book company into one of the top SaaS products in the world, and especially in the Voice space. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paulhickey/support

In this episode, Teri welcomes Braden Ream back to the show. Braden is the CEO and Co-Founder of Voiceflow.Welcome, Braden Ream!Voiceflow is one of the best platforms when it comes to developing, designing and prototyping Alexa skills and Google actions. He comes back to talk some tremendously exciting major developments at Voiceflow.VoiceflowThey started the company about a year ago. They were looking for different ideas in the voice space and had one of the original Alexa Dots. They started to experiment by starting with voice shopping, but it didn’t go anywhere. They eventually settled on doing interactive children stories. They looked into different platforms that they could use to create the stories because they had been custom coding, and felt it would take too long. They settled on StoryLine which is now Invocable, and it was very good. They used Invocable for some time, but they eventually hit a features cap so they tried other platforms, but none of them suited what they wanted to build, so they decided to build their own platform that would enable them to build interactive children’s stories faster. As they started to build the Storyflow Alexa skill, it became very popular especially in Canada. In 2018, they had the idea of creating "The YouTube of Voice" where authors would come on to the platform to build their own interactive stories that would be on Storyflow. The authors didn’t want to use the platform, and instead wanted to have their own app which prompted Braden and his team to shift their focus on allowing the authors to do that, and they changed the company’s name from Storyflow to Voiceflow. Storyflow is still the number one Alexa skill in Canada.Voiceflow’s Partnership with InvocableVoiceflow has been focusing on friendly competition because the voice space is not really a winner takes all kind of environment. They joined forces with Invocable and started with managing the Invocable platform with plans to integrate more and more with time. Invocable’s unique features will be fully integrated into Voiceflow to ensure a better and more advanced Voiceflow for the benefit of users from both platforms. The Voiceflow CommunityUniversally followed best practices haven’t been established in the voice space yet, so building a community is very important. They value their communities so much because they offer great feedback and support in making their platform better. They plan on integrating and expanding both the Voiceflow and Invocable communities. They have always been talking to their users and building the product which builds intimacy with the community. The most important thing to them is product and community, rather than just running the company.InvestorsThey have raised enough money to sustain their team.In their recent round of funding, their pitch was based on the huge future potential of voice as an interface.Investors put their money in team and market, and their market is at a very exciting time. Voiceflow connects to their market very quickly and they are taking things slow while trying to build the best product that people love.Feature UpdatesVoiceflow is now monetized. They do believe in allowing people to experiment with the platform and so they do have free trials to allow people to experience using Voiceflow. They have been working on laying down a scalable business model that is fair to their users and allows them to remain as a company. They have been developing a collaboration feature that will allow users to share projects and be able to collaborate. This feature is very valuable to professional users because they usually work in teams of 2+ people.Google integration: They figured out a way to do cross-platform development for Alexa and Google simultaneously. When a user is building on Voiceflow, they are actually building for both Alexa and Google at the same time. This has led to a ton of actions being published through Voiceflow. In future, they will work towards integrating other platforms like Siri and Bixby. They have done a lot of integrations like the ability to connect to third-party services without having to use APIs.They just added GoogleSheets, which means that one can connect to a GoogleSheet and post data without having to use APIs. This was a great upgrade for non-technical users. It has been widely adopted. They have also added a system for combined blocks which will ensure better design capabilities for users and developers. They have added so many other different features since the last time Braden was on the show. In this episode, Teri does a countdown of the 2019 Top Ten Amazon Alexa Skills in Canada.Teri went into the Canadian Amazon Skill Store and sorted the skills by top reviews which means that they are the skills that you the users have rated as the top skills. Teri had done a similar countdown months ago and interestingly some of the skills are still in the list, but there are some new ones, and the skill that takes the number one spot is actually brand new. Before we proceed, one small caveat: Teri selected the skills based on how interactive they are and not just sound effects. He decided to sort the skills this way so you can see Alexa at her best. With that in mind, time to countdown the top ten! Ready? Here we go! The Top Ten Amazon Alexa Skills in Canada!#10 AnyPod by Harrison Digital MediaAre you looking for a great skill to listen to podcasts on Alexa? It was the number 10 skill six months, so it’s holding steady. This is the best skills for listening to podcasts through your Alexa devices. Their description reads, “AnyPod lets you play any podcast. Enrich yourself with thousands of comedy, drama, music, tech, news, education, and pop culture audio programs” Once you open the skill, you can play a particular podcast title. You can say, “Next or Previous” You can say, “Fast forward two minutes” You can say, “Rewind thirty seconds” It also keeps track of where you are in your podcast.#9 Skyrim Very Special Edition by Bethesda Game StudiosThis is a new skill on the list. It has some mature content so it when you first start it, it will ask you if it is okay to start the skill based on the fact that it has some mature content. It’s an interactive game where the user explores Skyrim using the power of their voice. It has various quests, the user goes into dungeons, and they have different weapons and spells. The user encounters different people. It’s given in Alexa’s voice which means it is a text to speech type of a skill which can be a bit tiresome and difficult for a user to continue being engaged with it. The timing of the way she says sentences and phrases can be heard to understand.#8 TED Talks by TED ConferencesIf you’re interested in TED Talks, this is the skill for you. This was the number 8 skill six months ago. It’s a catalogue of all TED Talks and they describe as, “Explore TED's vast library of inspiring talks and ideas worth spreading by world-renowned speakers and thought leaders from around the globe. You can play the latest TED talk, play random TED talks, or search for talks by topic or by speaker name. You can also play talks that are funny, inspiring, persuasive, courageous, or jaw-dropping. New TED talks are available every weekday and are always free to the world!”#7 Work Smart Live Smart with Beverly Beuermann-King by 5 Star BriefingThis is a new skill on the list. It is the first of two flash briefings that are on this list of 2019 Top Skills for Canada. This skill is all about giving you tips on how to work and live smart. It’s description on Amazon reads,“Would you like to live your life with less stress and more happiness? Discover how to take small steps towards a healthier, happier, less-stress you. Stress is a powerful force in life. It can bring about illness, destroy relationships and cause chaos. There is not a one-size-fits-all coping strategy for dealing with stress. Our goal is to put a plan together that helps us to deal with the sources of stress, take care of ourselves during those stressful time and allows us to reach out to those around us for support. The Work Smart Live Smart flash briefing focuses on helping you to Harness Your Energy and Build Your Resiliency!”#6 Voice in Canada Flash Briefing by Voice in CanadaThis is the other flash briefing on the list and it’s by Teri Fisher. It is the number one flash briefing in Canada. It’s all about providing you with tips, tricks, the latest news, deals, and all types of information related to using your Alexa device in Canada.#5 True or False? by labworks.io ltdThis skill as on the list last time and it’s a fun “True or False” trivia game. There are a lot of different topics that you can pick from. You can pick from a random topic and it will go ahead and ask you “True or False” questions. You can play against other people (multiple players) or you can choose a particular topic. You can also learn some interesting facts from playing this game.#4 Would You Rather for Family by Voice GamesThis was the number one rated skill 6 months ago. It’s a game where the user is asked whether they would rather do one of two different things, activities or choices. There are different categories, either random questions/topics or Disney questions/topics. You can play along with multiple players and see how you do. It’s a very fun game. And now the top 3!#3 Escape the Room by Stoked Skills LLCDo you like escape room kind of games? Then you’re really going to enjoy this. This skill is holding strong at the number 3 spot for the last six months. This is just like all of those escape rooms that are becoming more and more popular except you’ll be doing it through voice. You’re given the option of working through a couple of different rooms then you’re presented with a scenario, and you have to look around, inspect things, use objects and figure out how you get out of the room. It’s very fun. The scenarios can be a bit challenging.#2 Yes Sire by Volley Inc.It was still at number 2 six months ago. This is a really fun game. Its description on Amazon goes, “Needy peasants. A backstabbing nobility. A king who is never satisfied. Nobody said that running a feudal fiefdom would be easy. But with this Alexa game, it is bound to be entertaining. Are you prepared to make some of the hardest decisions of your (soon to be short) life? You sit as a medieval lord of the realm, presented with an ever-expanding array of difficulty choices. Make good choices and stay in power as long as you can!”You go through making decisions about things that are happening in the kingdom, and you have to balance your level of influence and wealth, all of which if it keeps track of, and maintain those at certain levels so that you don’t end up being executed or running out of money. It’s all based on decisions in terms of running the kingdom. The voices are done by voice actors which makes the game very engaging and takes the user’s experience to a whole new remarkable level. And now for #1 of the Top Ten Amazon Alexa Skills… drum roll please…#1 Storyflow - Interactive Stories by getVoiceflow.comThey are brand new on the list and have been skyrocketing tremendously. Their description reads, “Storyflow brings adventures to life using professional voice actors, sound effects, and custom content made just for Alexa. Storyflow adventures play aloud on your Alexa device, and let you make decisions which will affect the outcome of the story. Turn left? Press the red button? It's up to you! You will be prompted by the other characters in the story when it's time to make a choice. To get started, launch the Storyflow skill and choose your story. If you already know the name of your story, just say "Alexa" followed by your story name to jump right in”They are choose-your-own-adventure type of stories which are incredibly done. The immersive experience through sound effects, voice artists and so much more, are the best on the skill store. They started out doing interactive stories, then they created a platform that allowed them to produce more stories and when they saw how the use of the platform was, they decided to put the platform out to the public to use as platform for creating stories or any other type of skill. The platform is called Voiceflow.List of resources mentioned in this episode:Teri’s Live Health Broadcast at the Alexa ConferenceTeri’s Live Flash Briefing Workshop at the Alexa ConferenceVoiceflow Founder’s Interview on Alexa in CanadaOther Useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsReviews of top Alexa Skills in CanadaAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.caThe Alexa Conference, presented by VoiceFirst.FMuse promo code ALEXAINCANADA for 20% off See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode, Teri welcomes Braden Ream, one of the co-founders of Voiceflow.Welcome Braden Ream!He is a Canadian and lives in Toronto. Their platform makes it very easy for both people getting started in Alexa skills and also seasoned developers who are looking for a more efficient way to code.Starting off in Voice TechnologyHis co-founder had an idea to create the “Honey for Voice Shopping” Honey is the Chrome extension that enables people to get the best price that applies coupons. They wanted to apply that to voice shopping and this is what got them involved in voice. There were some technical limitations because Amazon and Google didn’t want that at that time. They then started a children’s started a children’s stories app called Fable. They were read along children stories on Amazon Alexa. They built the initial MVP on storyline. They were writing the stories by hand and printing physical books. The user would read a line and Alexa would essentially see the line that was read and match it to the intent then Alexa would read the next line of the story. They then created an Alexa skill called Storyflow which delivers choose-your-own-adventure stories and it became very popular. Storyflow is number in Canada in the games and entertainment space. The PivotThe Storyline platform wasn’t allowing them to add more content at some point so they had to look at other platforms like Voice Apps and Conversation.OneThey eventually built their own platform which allowed them to build stories and have unlimited content on one skill. This was when they re-named their company to Storyflow. They custom built an internal tool that allowed them to easily build stories. The tool could help other people build stories and they wanted it to become like the “YouTube for Voice” so they invited a few people in the development community to try it out. They really liked it.They then pivoted to how they can help the world build better voice apps that actually help people become voice entrepreneurs.Voiceflow and other playersStoryline is now Invocable. There are several large and small companies that are doing the same thing. They include Voice Apps, Invocable and Voiceflow. They have different goals.Invocable is now a tool for businesses to prototype and design voice apps quickly.Voice Apps are focused on having the widest functionality and feature set.Voiceflow is more focused on having very specialized features that are geared towards helping people build businesses. For example, they are adding a business suite of tools which can allow people to build a voice app, scale it, retain customers and monetize customers.Voiceflow’s Target UserThey always want to ensure that even those who can’t code can use Voiceflow but they also want to support those who can code. They have been achieving that successfully and continuously improving on it.Other Voiceflow features in the pipelineThey are working on more features to support users who like to build voice apps as a hobby while also working on advanced features for business oriented coders. Some of the advanced features include account linking, permissions blocks (which they just enabled), deeper integrations with their API block and others. There has been a massive influx of hobbyist users since Storyline shifted. They are also adding more languages to include every English language as well as German, Italian and others. They are releasing their audio streaming feature.People in their community can suggest features.Other platforms other than AlexaFrom the beginning they built their tech to be platform agnostic so it can work with Google Home, Samsung Bixby, Apple Home Pod, and other platforms.Google doesn’t have as good a publishing API like Alexa so users have to do things manually because they can’t do everything within Voiceflow.UserbaseThey have over 1,000 developers now with over 400 in their community. The response has been mixed with some users preferring that Voiceflow had some features that other platforms have while some users love Voiceflow as it is because it fits with their needs. They focus their attention a lot on their community because it helps them build a user friendly product. The TeamThey have a 4 person full time team and are backed by a Toronto venture capital firm called Ripple Ventures as well as other angel investors. Most of them dropped out of college. They have several people working with them part time. They raised $500,000 to start the company.MonetizationThey always want to have a free community tier and they don’t want to limit features in terms of building a voice app.Their goal is a more value-based pricing model.List of resources mentioned in this episodeVoiceFlowVoiceFlow CommunityOther Useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsReviews of top Alexa Skills in CanadaAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.caThe Alexa Conference, presented by VoiceFirst.FMuse promo code ALEXAINCANADA for 20% off See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
