Through his own years of experience as a successful copywriter, Brett shares his insights on what works best — and also what mistakes to avoid.Wisdom NuggetsCreating effective copy: Brett reveals his five-step framework for creating effective copy that converts. The first step involves positioning the problem. The second step entails describing the issue in vivid detail. Have you avoided writing for your business because you believe you aren't a good writer? Whether you believe yourself to be a good writer or not, following this method you can create compelling copy that converts. To create compelling copy that converts, think about telling a story. Your audience becomes their own here while you are their guide to get to a specific solution. You have a story to tell Every experience you've had has led you to where you are today. You have the expertise and God has placed a calling on your heart to serve others who need the gifts and talents you have garnered on your journey. There are people waiting for you to tell your story so that they can connect with you and build a relationship with you and ultimately hire you to provide the solution they need. Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller Beautiful design for your website means very little unless it's paired with meaningful copy. With meaningful copy, your website can become your biggest marketing tool. Storytelling is an essential part of being your own brand. Copy and SEO Robyn emphasized that you can't have good search engine optimization without good copy. Your copy should have good readability and include the use of keywords and key phrases throughout. In addition, it should be separated by headers and subheaders for readability. The written word connected with beautiful imagery helps you build an emotional connection with your soulmate clients. Include professional images of yourself on your website that help tell the story you are sharing through your copy. Images are also a good opportunity for SEO. How to create compelling copy that converts in five minutes Kris explained that when we've been in our niche for a period of time, we forget that other people don't know what we know. She calls this the curse of knowledge. We may talk over our client's heads or simplify it down to something that doesn't engage them. Kris's method for storytelling can be broken down into three parts. Hero. Every story has a hero with a problem that they don't know how to solve. Guide. Hero's meet a guide that can solve their problem and help them be the hero of their story. You are the guide. Success. The guide provides the hero with a plan that guides them to success. This process is more about inviting your audience into the narrative with you than telling a story. This way they see themselves in the story together with you. This is a helpful process to use to create compelling copy that converts. If your copy makes you the hero, your audience will be less likely to get pulled into the story because they want to be the hero. Read the full show notes and access all links. “Every story should have a point, and every point should have a story,” explains Marisa Shadrick, award-winning branding and copywriting expert. For entrepreneurs, reaching customers through marketing is critical, though it can be challenging. On today's episode, Marisa shares her copywriting insights to help business owners communicate their messages more effectively and empathetically. When we're writing a copy, we often put way too much information in it to get our point across. Unfortunately, this makes our message harder to comprehend for our audience and can seem insecure. By ensuring that we only include the most resonating words and proofreading to check the flow, we can tell great stories that get people excited about what we're selling. In addition, emphasizing empathetic copy creates valuable connections. Learn more about the importance of storytelling in marketing, eliminating fluff language, and why dialogue is a powerful tool. Quotes “When we connect human to human, and use empathy, and use things like narrative writing, we can bridge the gap and connect with our audiences.” (3:12-3:23 | Marisa) “When I became a copywriter, I was really honing in on the stories. How could I leverage this? Then I suddenly realized, as I'm looking back, when I enjoy stories, it releases endorphins. Right? That feels good. So when people read stories, they're engaged, and we're used to stories, right? And so the stories are powerful, as in, I'm sure you're familiar with breakthrough copywriting. There's a quote there that says that people can't argue with an opinion or an assertion or even a claim, or people can argue with an opinion, assertion, or claim. But it's pretty hard to argue with a story. And so, I started incorporating that in my marketing and my copywriting. And I realized it really made a big difference.” (7:51-8:38 | Marisa) “Every story should have a point, and every point should have a story.” (11:11-11:14 | Marisa) “We always have to put our finger on the pulse of the market today.” (16:13-16:18 | Marisa) “Less is more. Remove anything that's filler. Every word needs to earn its right to be on that piece of communication.” (18:04-18:10 | Marisa) “Whatever it is that you have to offer someone, it is solving a problem and meeting a need. And that is very important.” (27:48-27:57 | Marisa) Links How to Secure More Clients or Customer with Compelling Copy: https://marisashadrick.com/workbook Connect with Marisa Shadrick Website: https://marisashadrick.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/marisacopywriter Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marisashadrick.copywriter/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marisashadrick/ ==== Thank You For Listening! https://www.linkedin.com/in/leebarnathan/ (Lee Barnathan )of https://www.leebarnathan.com (LB Communications) is on a mission to prevent a common mistake made by too many business owners that costs dearly when deciding on an email campaign. They aren't asking one fundamental question at the outset: Why do it in the first place? Is it to build credibility? Establish authority? Boost revenue? Create or strengthen brand awareness? Build or sustain relationships? You can't structure and write a successful campaign until you answer that because the way to execute your objective will be different. Business owners fail to understand at least 95% of the time that different campaigns require different strategies, channels, and tactics. It is not one size fits all. Lee points out that if you answer the critical, WHY ARE YOU DOING THE CAMPAIGN question first, you will end up with a more focused campaign that targets the right people, is located in the places the target people will see it, decreases the number of people that unsubscribe or don't respond to your call to action, and increases the likelihood of you reaching your campaign goals. Lee offers a four steps process to be sure your campaign delivers on the objective you need. Listen to the end for the details on Lee's gift to our audience that will get you pointed in the right direction. Show highlights 03:31 So many email campaigns disappoint because they lose sight of why they are doing it in the first place. 04:43 Your writing style changes based on your objective. 05:30 One message per email per target audience. 07:08 Writing copy for an email campaign the right way. 08:50 How it feels when you get it right. 10:38 Implementing an effective email campaign in 4 steps. 14:10 Learn about Lee. The dramatic tale of how Lee's 10-year-old daughter Aria passed away from complications of Alagille syndrome, spent six solid months trying to drink himself to death, and completely changed his perspective on why he writes copy. He has worked with hundreds of business owners from Russell Brunson of ClickFunnels to the legendary marketer Dan Kennedy and Joe Vitale (author of numerous books and The Law of Attraction). But for Lee, it isn't about impressing other copywriters. It's about authentic, compelling messages that keep customers coming back. He went on to talk about how to cultivate long-term relationships with your audience, how to stand out as a copywriter and find good copywriters to hire for your business. Receiving a black belt almost 30 years ago back in 1991, the practice of Tae Kwan Do had a significant impact on how Lee thinks about success and excellence. Lee explains how martial arts, Eastern philosophy, and life experiences culminated in his non-formulaic approach towards writing copy and branding. Support The Podcast! “People assume that, being a business owner, we need to have a professional, nonchalant, corporate air. Which is opposite of the way we need to be.” Janelle Lara (9:27) To write effective copy, you have to put yourself in your client's shoes. Would your clients trek through three feet of snow to get to you? Let's back that up. Put another way, how interested are your clients in your offer? Are you telling a story that compels your dream client to beat your door down, even if it takes them out of their comfort zone? Writing compelling copy is a skill that requires an understanding of human psychology. Experts like Sarah Temte approach copywriting armed with the knowledge that humans would almost always rather stay where they are than take a risk. It's a common pitfall for entrepreneurs who are in love with their offer. You know you're offering something brilliant and you know it's tremendously valuable. With that in mind, you start to feel indignant when your clients aren't falling at your feet. So what's the cure? “People are chasing feelings a lot more than we think they are.” - Sarah Temte (11:35)First of all, understand what it is that you're asking from your client. No matter how much your offer helps, in accepting it, your client is taking a leap of faith and taking action - even if they're only clicking a link. That's a very hard place for people to be, and it's important for you to be cognizant. Second, it's important to remember that you're situated in a noisy marketplace with a lot of other people who present similar offers and skill sets. Your clients could invest their money anywhere, and it is your responsibility to get their attention and communicate what sets your offer apart from others. Once you've got a firm grasp on the concepts, it's time to position your offer. Your priority should be understanding the client experience you offer. How do you make people feel? What is your promise at every stage of the buyer journey? Understanding why your client makes decisions will set you ahead of the curve. All humans chase feelings. We make our decisions based on a complex mixture of emotions, goals, and internal narratives. We are especially driven by the fear of missing out. If you can delve into the meaning of a purchase that goes beyond the product itself, you will be able to craft stories on a much deeper level. It is your responsibility to communicate to your customers all the amazing things your offer can do. The best copy in the world is, at its core, a captivating story. And that's exactly what it should be - a story, not a narrative that boosts your ego. Inspire your clients to buy from you, rather than demanding the result you want. “Are you paying attention to why people won't read your email, but they'll spend an hour watching The Bachelor?” - Sarah Temte (23:55) The last consideration you should make in your copywriting journey is that of your own storytelling tendencies. Are you an extroverted over-sharer? Or maybe you are a taciturn introvert who prefers the bare bones. Either way, get into the habit of writing down the stories that interest you, and editing them towards the opposite tendency. If you give a lot of detail, trim the fat. If you only give the basics, elaborate a little. No matter which way you lean, you have to put in the work. Write every day, about every headline that interests you. Open your eyes to the things that captivate your peers and emulate the trends you find. No one starts out as an expert. It's ultimately about your effort. Captivate your audience, learn to better understand their wants and needs, and they will trudge through the snow, no matter how deep, to get to your offer. As important as the words on the screen is the design of your emails. Listen and learn what you can focus on for improvement, testing design elements and creating a layout that works for you.
We've said it many times on the podcast: the only thing you can sell in your emails is a click. If the content of your email isn't good, you're never going to get the click-throughs you need to land conversions. Here are tips on creating better email content.
Your subject line is an email's first impression. It's the first Call To Action that leads them towards conversion. This episode has some tips to write better subject lines.
This is the last episode in our conversation on growing your list. We move onto the next topic after this one. Last, and certainly not least, for growing your list is the Call To Action. You need to create a sense of urgency, use action words and more to ensure you've gained a new subscriber.
Another important aspect of the words you use for your signup form is the incentive. Potential subscribers need to understand the value in opting into your list. Tell them what they have to look forward to!
In addition to touch points and timing, the words you put on your signup form matter when it comes to growing your list. Part of that is the tone or personality that your words carry. That's what is called the "voice" of your copy.

[av_social_share title='Share this entry' style='' buttons='' custom_class='' admin_preview_bg=''] Episode Summary What compels someone to want to support your cause? Your story? Your brand? People join movements because they desire a sense of belonging. Everyone wants to be a part of something bigger than themselves. They can create movements that start at a higher level. Movements demand action; and the way to create action is through developing your messaging and your brand. A prime example of the proper use of an effective message and brand is mentioned in our book, “Brick by Brick” wherein we try to delve into what makes superheroes so popular. Think about it, superheroes are so ingrained into our culture to the point that entire franchises are built upon them. These are some of the most lucrative ventures that one can pursue. Superheroes are brands in themselves. Comic book releases that contain the stories of these superheroes are almost the same as, if not exactly the same, compelling copy. Your community gives support because they value the social and emotional good done by the organization. Depending on the supporter, he or she may donate more from the heart or more from the head. This means people can be compelled by a message that tells a story or by seeing statistical information that shows how large of an impact donating can have. Sometimes you’ll even encounter situations where potential donors, depending on their personality, are influenced by both. Information such as the organization’s track record, credibility, story, and visuals are all important when it comes to connecting to your supporters and empowering to take action through your cause. Engagement in a community, donating to a cause, and joining a larger movement is borne from many reasons. However, the key lies in understanding the motivation of the giver and providing the type of messaging that builds on what they respond to. Ask them what they want to get out of giving. Determining their motivation will help you to better serve your donors. Doing this will ultimately help you raise more money. Listen in as we are joined by Leanna Johnson, of Lost Lass, as she speaks about 360-degree branding, where she encourages organizations to look at their brand from a holistic perspective and to develop content that is fully aligned with the brand. This way, the organization can leverage its messaging through its marketing in a clear and consistent manner; while forming a community that’s based upon a strong foundation. About Leanna Johnson Leanna Johnson is the founder of Lost Lass, a freelance journalism brand. Her mission is to discover and create multimedia stories for businesses and media outlets.
