The Sumner Tunnel restoration project has been going on for some time, and you might remember last summer's closure that lasted nearly two months, causing major delays around Logan Airport and East Boston. MassDOT says they have to shut it down again for a few weeks so crews can get back in there and complete a good chunk of road work without having to worry about traffic or lane closures. Once it's all done, Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver says we'll see the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to the project. The dreaded weeks-long Sumner Tunnel closure is finally upon us. The nearly 90-year-old connection between East Boston and Downtown closed to traffic on July 5th for $160 million worth of renovations – and it's scheduled to stay that way until the end of August. In the meantime, officials expect serious delays for travelers in the area and are urging folks to find other ways to get around. The MBTA is offering free and reduced fares on several routes to help ease some of the pressure, including the East Boston ferries and the Blue Line train. So, The Common took advantage of the free fare for a trip out to East Boston to see how passengers are holding up. Greater Boston's daily podcast where news and culture meet.

About the time of Paul Revere's death in 1818 the street name Mechanic Street begins to appear on maps in Boston's North End. This narrow street, connecting what was then Middle Street and Fish Street, was also connected to Board Alley in the center, forming a ladder on some maps or an arch on others. Mechanic Street in Boston is barely a street anymore. One end was cut off when the Sumner Tunnel was constructed and the other is now outdoor seating for a restaurant. This location is on the Freedom Trail but it is not part of a tour, there is no historical marker. This is a block away from Revere's house but any connection to him is not drawn even though it easily could be. Mechanic in this context is unrelated to automobiles or garages. This is an archaic, old-world definition of Mechanic that refers to people who work with their hands in a number of skilled crafts. One might guess the name of this street is intended to reflect Boston's rising class of citizen artisans, but could it mean something much more in addition to that? Throughout the nineteenth century Mechanic Streets begin appearing in towns across Massachusetts, over 70 in fact, many with a very specific configuration. Is there a lost meaning in the street layout itself? In this episode of Lost Massachusetts we begin looking at the lost history of Mechanic street to see where it takes us. It is a DBG from March 3rd, 1996 which I’ve titled “Proud Mary Keep On Talking.” Before the game begins there’s a discussion on what image should be placed on a postage stamp honoring Traffic Reporters as well as who should paint it? There are a couple of great suggestions. Of course, while this is going on the Tobin Bridge has partially collapsed, there’s a 700+ car pile-up, the Sumner Tunnel and Ted Williams Tunnels are no stranger to disaster here as well, but the game takes precedence over that trifling stuff. The players are: Ken Newman from Traffic The young whippersnapper, Michael Cannon who’s only 18, producing and playing. The stubborn and cantankerous Toni from Middletown, OH. The whispery and chatty Mary from Kittery, ME. And the hacking Al in Waltham. Bdays: Enzo Stuarti Lee Radziwell Ross – aka Caroline Lee Bouvier The saucy Ed Marinaro Jackie Joyner-Kersee Herschel Walker Event in history: In what year did The Star-Spangled Banner become the National Anthem of the United States? Did you know that Norm was in the area when the bombs were bursting in air? He was there in downtown Baltimore picking up girls when he looked up and the flag was still there. And he has proof through the night! Mary is so loquacious throughout the game. It provides a lot of entertainment including Norm revealing he’s telepathic and can sense fear and nausea. We are informed of a binding resolution that appears in the 700-page DBG Rule Book (now available on cd-rom!) Norm runs out of stuff and the tape runs out as well so good timing. The high-spirited Episode 76: “Proud Mary Keep On Talking” begins now.
