//The Wire//2300Z November 20, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: ARSON ATTACK OCCURS ON BLUE LINE TRAIN IN CHICAGO. MASS GANG SHOOTING WOUNDS 5X BYSTANDERS IN NEWARK. SUSPECT AT LARGE FOLLOWING SUBWAY STABBING IN NEW YORK. ICE OPERATIONS CONTINUE AMID LOCAL RESISTANCE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-Florida: Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has been indicted by a grand jury for embezzling $5 million of FEMA funding that was distributed due to the Hurricane Milton disaster response.Analyst Comment: As a reminder, Rep. Cherfilus was in office during the infamous Hurricane Milton scandal, which saw FEMA officials ordering their employees to not provide aid to residences that had Trump signs in their front yard. FEMA supervisor Marn'i Washington was fired by FEMA, but was not prosecuted for her crime of violating the Hatch Act.Illinois: Yesterday an arson attack was reported on a Blue Line train, which involved an assailant dousing a woman with a flammable liquid before setting her on fire. The attacker has been identified as Lawrence Reed and was arrested shortly after the attempted murder.Analyst Comment: Reed has a criminal record spanning nearly four decades, which have involved him being arrested and released 72 times, including around a dozen times for felony crimes. Several of these crimes involved arson, but each time he was arrested he was released. In at least one case the judge released him from a psych ward...because he was deemed too dangerous to remain in custody as he would repeatedly and violently assault staff members at the ward. He was released into the general public with an ankle monitor instead. After his arrest for setting this woman on fire, he was brought before Magistrate Judge Laura McNally, with court reporters documenting what happened. Judge McNally told Reed that "When you walked in here, I presumed you to be innocent of these charges". Reed then replied "I'm guilty" before continuing his belligerent behavior in the courtroom.New Jersey: Surveillance footage has come to light pertaining to a mass shooting that was reported in Newark two days ago. Rival gangs conducted a skirmish in the street, and due to the "spray and pray" manner of the engagement, 5x bystanders where shot as well. Two people were killed during the engagement, including a 10-year-old boy.New York: Another subway stabbing took place a few days ago, with the NYPD releasing the photo of the suspect this morning. An unidentified black male slashed a passenger with a sharp object while transiting on the E train. No other details were provided regarding the attack.Kentucky: This afternoon the NTSB released the highly-anticipated preliminary report regarding the fatal crash of UPS Flight 2976 that occurred one month ago. The photos provided in the accident report shed light on what happened; the port-side engine completely ripped away from the wing due to a failure of the pylons holding it to the aircraft. In short, the engine flew itself off the wing due to fatigue and degradation of the mechanisms attaching the engine to the wing.Analyst Comment: Now, we know why the FAA grounded all MD-11 and DC-10 aircraft in the United States immediately after the crash. In just six images, the NTSB told the whole story, strongly indicating that the crash of Flight 2976 bears striking resemblance to the deadliest aviation accident in US history...the crash of American Airlines Flight 191 which crashed in a nearly identical manner while departing Chicago back in 1979. That aircraft was a DC-10, and 273 people were killed during that incident.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Counter illegal immigration operations continue around the country, as resistance to deportations continues to escalate. In North Carolina, the city of Charlotte has experienced a halt of nearly all construction projects due to illegal wor

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Last week, the US officially launched negotiations within the 15-member United Nations Security Council on a draft resolution that would follow up on Israel and Hamas’s October 9 ceasefire-hostage agreement. Tomorrow, the Security Council is set to vote on the resolution, which would deliver Gaza to an International Stabilization Force (ISF) and an apolitical Palestinian administration overseen by a Trump-chaired Board of Peace. In the first half of the program, Berman gives an analysis of some of the implications for Israel -- and questions the world's appetite for seeing through in the demilitarization of Hamas. US President Donald Trump on Friday said that he was considering agreeing to a deal to supply Saudi Arabia with F-35 stealth fighter jets, which are made by Lockheed Martin. We hear whether a more robust Saudi air force could affect the Middle East and learn why the United Arab Emirates has not yet received its promised planes. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on Friday that the Israeli army had built walls on the Lebanese side of the UN-demarcated Blue Line, the de facto border. We learn about the Blue Line and discuss whether a complaint to the UN has any teeth. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. As the Washington Capitals gear up for their season opener against the Boston Bruins, the defense is finally settling into shape. Matt Roy and Declan Chisholm both returned to full practice, giving head coach Spencer Carbery a huge boost just in time for puck drop. Roy's return solidifies the top four, reuniting him with Rasmus Sandin — a pairing that drove possession and created scoring chances last year. Chisholm's recovery from a skate cut adds reliable puck movement and depth to the third pair, restoring confidence across the back end. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The stabbing death of Iryna Zarutska on the Blue Line is getting national attention and a response from the White House. That comes as city elections take place. The results are in, and we'll catch you up. Last week, CMS announced good news for testing, but this week brings more sobering news: nationwide declines in 12th grade math and reading scores. In short, they are abysmal. Plus, Charlotte FC goes for history.

We examine the results of Charlotte's primary election as the city gains national attention, including from President Trump, over a stabbing death on the Blue Line in South End.

The train brings out its own brand of weird, which has led to Mason and Ally trading spooky stories to help their commute pass a little faster. If you have a story you'd like to contribute to the series, you can visit https://submissions.soundconceptmedia.com/You can support the show by becoming a paid subscriber on Substack: https://auditoryanthology.substack.comBy becoming a paid subscriber you can listen to every episode completely ad-free!Curator: Keith Conrad linktr.ee/keithrconradNarrator: Darren Marlar https://darrenmarlar.com/Other shows hosted by Darren:Weird Darkness: https://weirddarkness.com/Paranormality Magazine: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/paranormalitymagMicro Terrors: Scary Stories for Kids: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/microterrorsRetro Radio – Old Time Radio In The Dark: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/retroradioChurch of the Undead: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/churchoftheundead Hosted on Acast. There are numerous social and structural vectors for disease that are not often discussed in medical school. So, Dr. David Ansell says he had a lot to learn once he became a physician. Ansell, author of “The Death Gap: How Inequality Kills,” writes about the stark disparities in access to treatment and outcomes for patients in the U.S. healthcare system. “We always talk about inequities. We have frank inequities, but we have gross inequalities,” Ansell says. “The care isn't equal… And if we could get to equal, then we can take on the inequity.” One of the most glaring examples is life expectancy; a person's zip code can be a strong predictor for their life expectancy due to social and structural determinants of health, including structural racism and economic deprivation, he says. “If you live in The Loop in Chicago, you can live to be 85 and if it were a country, it'd be ranked first in the world,” Ansell says. “But if you live in Garfield Park, three stops down the Blue Line from Rush, life expectancy post-Covid is 66.” In this conversation, which was first published in 2023 for the Health Disparities podcast, Dr. Ansell speaks with Movement Is Life's Dr. Carla Harwell about the importance of addressing systemic racism and inequality in the healthcare system. A night shift ER nurse's quiet evening turns surreal when a patient is admitted with a deep cut on his temple, and her computer system reveals he was pronounced dead in the exact same hospital room just four days earlier.Tales From The Blue Line: Every morning at three, Mason and Ally ride the Blue Line into downtown Chicago together. //The Wire//2300Z August 26, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: TRUMP DOUBLES DOWN ON CHINESE STUDENT EXPANSION AS RESEARCHER IN TEXAS IS CHARGED WITH STEALING SECRETS FOR CHINA. WAVE OF FAKE ACTIVE SHOOTER REPORTS SWEEPS THROUGH AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS. SYRIAN MIGRANT WHO ATTACKED AMERICAN IN DRESDEN RELEASED FROM CUSTODY, BUT RE-ARRESTED AFTER PUBLIC OUTRAGE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Germany: Following Sunday's knife attack in Dresden, one of the individuals involved in the attack of an American tourist was released from jail. Sunday morning, two illegal immigrants from Syria were harassing two women on a tram in Dresden. John Rudat, an American tourist visiting the city intervened during the altercation, and was stabbed in the face by one of the assailants, resulting in extremely severe lacerations. The other assailant (not the man who stabbed Rudat, but a different attacker) was captured while trying to escape, but was released from custody yesterday, only to be re-arrested after public outrage pressured the prosecutor's office to act. The man who stabbed Rudat remains at large.-HomeFront-USA: Over the past few days, many different universities and institutions have been the victim of hoaxes which have taken the form of someone calling in a fake active shooter threat. What began as one or two reports has spread to about a dozen different institutions.Analyst Comment: Right now, it is not known who is calling in these fake reports, but extreme caution is warranted. The theories of why this is happening vary widely, but this could also be a desensitizing effort that precedes a legitimate attack at some other institution. As such, vigilance is recommended to avoid slipping into complacency, just in case this turns out to be a legitimate threat at some point.Washington D.C. - President Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick have doubled-down on statements supporting the import of 600,000 Chinese students, further reiterating the intent to stick to this policy at present, with President Trump stating multiple times that he is "honored" to have these students taking up seats at American universities.Texas: Yesterday afternoon Dr. Yunhai Li, a researcher at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was formally charged with stealing roughly 90gb of research material. Li was arrested on Friday before attempting to board a flight to China, after uploading the stolen research data to a Chinese government cloud storage platform. Li had personally been granted both NIH and Department of Defense grants to conduct undisclosed research.Maryland: The first human case of New World Screwworm was reported by the CDC yesterday afternoon, which was contracted by a person who traveled to El Salvador. The USDA has stated that this case doesn't pose any threat to livestock at present, however a 20-mile surveillance zone has been established around the individual's location as a precaution.California: More details have come to light regarding a car fire that was reported at the Humboldt County Courthouse in Eureka over the weekend. Local authorities have stated that a man drove his vehicle onto the lawn of the courthouse, before setting the car on fire.Analyst Comment: So far, this incident appears to be an elaborate form of protest, though at present no clear ideology could be discerned from the evidence at the scene. Some people report that they saw various messages written in chalk on the sidewalk, and that hand-written papers were found scattered about the scene. All of this points to this being more of a mental health incident than anything else at this time.North Carolina: The victim of a murder on the Blue Line rail system in Charlotte has been identified as Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee. Zarutska was stabbed to death on the train by Decarlos Brown Jr. on Friday night.Mi
San Diego city planners recently released a draft update to the Clairemont Community Plan. The changes would rezone many of the neighborhood's strip malls and shopping centers to allow for higher-density housing. In western Clairemont, near the Blue Line trolley stations, however, the neighborhood would remain largely unchanged. On Midday Edition Tuesday, we discuss the changes and the attitudes around them.Guest:Andrew Bowen, metro reporter, KPBS
I spoke with Venice Immersive curators Liz Rosenthal & Michel Reilhac about sneak peak of their 2025 selection, which is their largest selection yet. See more context in the rough transcript below. Here's an Venice Immersive Program Cheat Sheet by Voices of VR podcast (PDF), which has an overview of the four categories of immersive experiences ordered by longest booking times to shortest (amount of time required for scheduling purposes) as well as the actual runtime, the number of people who can see it per slot, and then the number of people who can see it per day. This should hopefully help for your scheduling process. I typically book experiences to roughly corresponding to hours. The Biennale scheduling website will open up on Thursday, August 21st, and it will not let you double book yourself. So I personally find it easier to book the longer experiences first, and then fill out my schedule with shorter experiences, and then experiences that generally have higher capacity. Note that Ancestors (capacity of 48 people), and L'Ombre (capacity of 50 people), and each of the VRChat sessions only have one booking time per day, and so these are also worth prioritizing if you want to see them and they should have lots of capacity throughout the week. The One the Other Earth may be one of the more logistically difficult experiences to see as you'll need to make a trek up to the main Venice island. I'd recommend trying to keep your schedule clear for at least an hour before and afterwards. Here's a Venice Immersive Schedule Helper that I put together to help navigate the schedule. Here's a placeholder for my other coverage of Venice Immersive 2025 to be updated after the festival. Venice Airport to Lido Island The best way to get to Lido from the Venice airport is either via the Red or Blue Line of the Alilaguna Public Transport water taxi, which you can get tickets either after you come out of customs or you can go to the water taxi dock at the Venice airport, and there's a booth there. Picking up badge at Palazzo del Casinò I usually pick up my badge at the bottom of the Palazzo del Casinò, which is at Lungomare Guglielmo Marconi, 1861, 30126 Lido VE, Italy Venezia 2000 to the VR Island (Lazzaretto Vecchio) The best way to get to the VR Island of Lazzaretto Vecchio from the docks is the bus. The buses leave every 15-20 minutes, and it's a 3 minute ride, and another 5 minute walk to the island. Here is a link to the bus route and the addresses. I believe it is either the A, N, or C or CE routes. I believe the bus stop names are S.Maria Elisabetta and then I get off at the Gallo Sant'Antonio stop. The address of the VR island is Isola del Lazzaretto Vecchio, Lazzaretto Vecchio, 30100 Venezia VE, Italy There is a water taxi that you can find the pick-up spot by looking at the google map and get directions there. It takes 1 minute of a ride, but there is only one taxi that can be a 10-15 minute wait depending on how busy it is. Also be sure to check out XR Must's interview with Liz and Michel, which I found a lot of helpful info in. Some of the artist statement videos are starting to get posted onto the BiennaleChannel YouTube page. Nick is joined by Hollywood Reporter TV critic Dan Fienberg for a conversation about his site The Fien Print and the latest chaos in the Big Brother house. They cover the return of King of the Hill, what to expect from Wednesday Season 2, and the debut of FX's Alien: Earth. The discussion also touches on Ozzy Osbourne's surprising TV legacy, the politics of South Park, and other small-screen topics. Esmeralda Leon then teams up with Nick to swap outrageous CTA stories. From a man licking every pole and handrail on a train, to Nick's bus ride with a loose mouse, to a woman on the Blue Line eating scrambled eggs with her bare hands right next to him—these tales prove public transit is never boring. Vance Boelter, the man accused of killing former DFL House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and shooting and wounding State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Wearing a jail uniform, Boelter stood beside his attorney in court yesterday. Assistant U.S. Attorney Harry Jacobs said the government is sifting through hundreds of gigabytes and tens of thousands of pages of evidence.A Minnesota mother remains in ICE custody despite a judge's order for her release. The family members of people in Minnesota prisons say the state is moving too slowly in creating a new system to allow incarcerated people to use tablet computers. The tablets are used to message with family members, access educational content and play media like music. Business and home owners along the planned Blue Line light rail extension say they have not been able to access millions of dollars anti-displacement funding allocated by the state legislature. Nonprofit and public media officials are expressing concerns over a bill passed by Congress last month. They spoke about the fallout during a listening session put on by DFL Congresswoman Betty McCollum yesterday. The two left lanes of 35W will be closed in both directions between Roseville and Lino Lakes this weekend. That means long stretches of the highway will be reduced to a single lane in each direction. The closures begin tonight and run through early Monday.
