//The Wire//2300Z August 26, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: TRUMP DOUBLES DOWN ON CHINESE STUDENT EXPANSION AS RESEARCHER IN TEXAS IS CHARGED WITH STEALING SECRETS FOR CHINA. WAVE OF FAKE ACTIVE SHOOTER REPORTS SWEEPS THROUGH AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS. SYRIAN MIGRANT WHO ATTACKED AMERICAN IN DRESDEN RELEASED FROM CUSTODY, BUT RE-ARRESTED AFTER PUBLIC OUTRAGE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Germany: Following Sunday's knife attack in Dresden, one of the individuals involved in the attack of an American tourist was released from jail. Sunday morning, two illegal immigrants from Syria were harassing two women on a tram in Dresden. John Rudat, an American tourist visiting the city intervened during the altercation, and was stabbed in the face by one of the assailants, resulting in extremely severe lacerations. The other assailant (not the man who stabbed Rudat, but a different attacker) was captured while trying to escape, but was released from custody yesterday, only to be re-arrested after public outrage pressured the prosecutor's office to act. The man who stabbed Rudat remains at large.-HomeFront-USA: Over the past few days, many different universities and institutions have been the victim of hoaxes which have taken the form of someone calling in a fake active shooter threat. What began as one or two reports has spread to about a dozen different institutions.Analyst Comment: Right now, it is not known who is calling in these fake reports, but extreme caution is warranted. The theories of why this is happening vary widely, but this could also be a desensitizing effort that precedes a legitimate attack at some other institution. As such, vigilance is recommended to avoid slipping into complacency, just in case this turns out to be a legitimate threat at some point.Washington D.C. - President Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick have doubled-down on statements supporting the import of 600,000 Chinese students, further reiterating the intent to stick to this policy at present, with President Trump stating multiple times that he is "honored" to have these students taking up seats at American universities.Texas: Yesterday afternoon Dr. Yunhai Li, a researcher at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was formally charged with stealing roughly 90gb of research material. Li was arrested on Friday before attempting to board a flight to China, after uploading the stolen research data to a Chinese government cloud storage platform. Li had personally been granted both NIH and Department of Defense grants to conduct undisclosed research.Maryland: The first human case of New World Screwworm was reported by the CDC yesterday afternoon, which was contracted by a person who traveled to El Salvador. The USDA has stated that this case doesn't pose any threat to livestock at present, however a 20-mile surveillance zone has been established around the individual's location as a precaution.California: More details have come to light regarding a car fire that was reported at the Humboldt County Courthouse in Eureka over the weekend. Local authorities have stated that a man drove his vehicle onto the lawn of the courthouse, before setting the car on fire.Analyst Comment: So far, this incident appears to be an elaborate form of protest, though at present no clear ideology could be discerned from the evidence at the scene. Some people report that they saw various messages written in chalk on the sidewalk, and that hand-written papers were found scattered about the scene. All of this points to this being more of a mental health incident than anything else at this time.North Carolina: The victim of a murder on the Blue Line rail system in Charlotte has been identified as Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee. Zarutska was stabbed to death on the train by Decarlos Brown Jr. on Friday night.Mi

I spoke with Venice Immersive curators Liz Rosenthal & Michel Reilhac about sneak peak of their 2025 selection, which is their largest selection yet. See more context in the rough transcript below. Here's an Venice Immersive Program Cheat Sheet by Voices of VR podcast (PDF), which has an overview of the four categories of immersive experiences ordered by longest booking times to shortest (amount of time required for scheduling purposes) as well as the actual runtime, the number of people who can see it per slot, and then the number of people who can see it per day. This should hopefully help for your scheduling process. I typically book experiences to roughly corresponding to hours. The Biennale scheduling website will open up on Thursday, August 21st, and it will not let you double book yourself. So I personally find it easier to book the longer experiences first, and then fill out my schedule with shorter experiences, and then experiences that generally have higher capacity. Note that Ancestors (capacity of 48 people), and L'Ombre (capacity of 50 people), and each of the VRChat sessions only have one booking time per day, and so these are also worth prioritizing if you want to see them and they should have lots of capacity throughout the week. The One the Other Earth may be one of the more logistically difficult experiences to see as you'll need to make a trek up to the main Venice island. I'd recommend trying to keep your schedule clear for at least an hour before and afterwards. Here's a Venice Immersive Schedule Helper that I put together to help navigate the schedule. Here's a placeholder for my other coverage of Venice Immersive 2025 to be updated after the festival. Venice Airport to Lido Island The best way to get to Lido from the Venice airport is either via the Red or Blue Line of the Alilaguna Public Transport water taxi, which you can get tickets either after you come out of customs or you can go to the water taxi dock at the Venice airport, and there's a booth there. Picking up badge at Palazzo del Casinò I usually pick up my badge at the bottom of the Palazzo del Casinò, which is at Lungomare Guglielmo Marconi, 1861, 30126 Lido VE, Italy Venezia 2000 to the VR Island (Lazzaretto Vecchio) The best way to get to the VR Island of Lazzaretto Vecchio from the docks is the bus. The buses leave every 15-20 minutes, and it's a 3 minute ride, and another 5 minute walk to the island. Here is a link to the bus route and the addresses. I believe it is either the A, N, or C or CE routes. I believe the bus stop names are S.Maria Elisabetta and then I get off at the Gallo Sant'Antonio stop. The address of the VR island is Isola del Lazzaretto Vecchio, Lazzaretto Vecchio, 30100 Venezia VE, Italy There is a water taxi that you can find the pick-up spot by looking at the google map and get directions there. It takes 1 minute of a ride, but there is only one taxi that can be a 10-15 minute wait depending on how busy it is. Also be sure to check out XR Must's interview with Liz and Michel, which I found a lot of helpful info in. Herb Brooks was the COACH… NORWAY TIE Again… Again… Again… BLUE LINE, RED LINE, BLUE LINE, TO THE WALL AND BACK They were nicknamed “Herbies” It was to demand the most out of his players and find out which ones had it emotionally and mentally not just physically. He wanted to find the right players and not the best players…. What many of the players did not realize was Herb had a degree in Psychology… he understood what it took to get the most out of his players… HE PERFECTED HIS COACHING STYLE FROM HIS OWN PAIN - he was the last one cut from the roster to make the 1960 Olympic team which won a gold. He was thought to be not as gifted, fast, conditioned or experienced as the others on the team. During the season of prep for the Olympics the team hated Herb. He was their enemy… NOT REALIZING THAT THIS WAS ON PURPOSE TO BRING OUT THE BEST IN HIS PLAYERS. He had players from Boston who hated the skaters from ND and the like… TODAY WE SEE THE LIFE OF MARK OR JOHN MARK He was surrounded by some Herb Brooks By the names of the Apostle Paul and Peter… not easy guys to be around… especially for Mark or John Mark as he was actually called. What happens when a legal doctrine meant to protect good police becomes a shield for official misconduct? In this explosive debate, we dive deep into qualified immunity with experts from both sides of the thin blue line.Force Science expert Von Kliem squares off against civil rights advocate Mr. BillFold in a passionate examination of whether qualified immunity serves its intended purpose. The discussion reveals startling statistics: only one-third of civil rights cases against officers involve qualified immunity defenses, and 99.98% of officers who lose qualified immunity protection never pay a dime out of pocket due to municipal indemnification. The conversation tackles the "clearly established" standard that requires nearly identical precedent cases for rights to be protected—creating a troubling scenario where even obvious constitutional violations can escape accountability. We examine cases like Baxter v. Bracey, where officers received immunity after releasing a police dog on a surrendered suspect simply because he was sitting rather than lying down when he surrendered. Our panelists debate whether qualified immunity truly protects good officers making split-second decisions or primarily shields bad actors from accountability. The data suggests qualified immunity cases take 23% longer than typical federal civil rights cases, contradicting claims that the doctrine efficiently resolves frivolous lawsuits.Perhaps most surprising is that police use of force cases represent only about 23% of qualified immunity cases, with many others involving government officials like mayors and administrators. Over half of First Amendment qualified immunity cases involve alleged premeditated violations—not the split-second decisions the doctrine was supposedly created to protect.Join us for this eye-opening examination of a judicial doctrine that affects police accountability, civil rights, and the pursuit of justice in America. Whether you support or oppose qualified immunity, this conversation will challenge your understanding of how it actually functions in our legal system.#police #lawenforcement #cops #bridgethegap #bethechange

Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 12-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 22,504 on turnover of $4.8-billion N-T. Cabinet passes plan to develop central Taiwan smart manufacturing hub Premier Cho Jung-tai instructed the Ministry of Economic Affairs to work closely with local governments based on a draft plan to transform central Taiwan into a smart manufacturing hub. The premier issued the instruction during a weekly Cabinet meeting, at which a draft plan to turn central Taiwan into a global hub of smart manufacturing with existing industries and new businesses was approved. The Cabinet says machinery and precision manufacturing industries in Taichung will be transformed through the introduction of artificial intelligence to improve production efficiency and integration of the supply chain. A-I is also expected to also help the metal manufacturing business in Changhua to reduce production costs, improve energy efficiency (效率) and make operations more environmentally friendly. While technologies will be introduced in Nantou and Yunlin to improve efficiency in production and distribution of their respective agricultural and aquacultural products. Construction on Taichung MRT Blue Line begins Construction of the Taichung M-R-T's Blue Line has gotten underway at a groundbreaking ceremony. The city government has said the 24.7-kilometer line is scheduled for completion in 2034. Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen says the 20 station Blue Line will run from the East District to the Port of Taichung, with future extensions planned to the Mountain Line and Coastal Line areas. The line will intersect the Green Line at City Hall, forming what Lu called a "golden cross" - a project she described (形容) as central Taiwan's most significant infrastructure development over the next decade. Ukraine Claims Russian Sumy Advance Halted Ukrainian forces claim to have stopped Russia's advance into the northern Sumy region, stabilizing the front line near the border. Ukraine's top military commander said on Thursday that this success (成功) has prevented Russia from redeploying 50,000 troops, including elite units, to other areas. Russian officials have not commented on the claim. Fighting continues along the 1,000-kilometer front line, with Ukraine relying on drones to counter Russia's slow but costly advances. In Donetsk, Russia claims to have captured two villages as part of its offensive. Both sides are also launching long-range drone strikes, causing injuries and damage across multiple regions. US Sec of Defense Berates Press as New Details on Iran Bombing Emerge US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth berated the press as Anti-Trump during a briefing on Thursday, but offered no new details on the extent of the damage caused by US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. This comes after a classified preliminary assessment by US intelligence was leaked (洩漏) to the media - suggesting the damage may not amount to complete obliteration as the President claims. Toni Waterman has more from Washington. UK Steps Back from NAfrica Energy Project The United Kingdom is stepping back from funding a project to transmit power generated by North Africa's winds and sun via underwater cables and is pivoting instead to projects seen as less risky. The country's Energy Security Department said on Thursday it planned to step back from the $33 billion project due to a “high level of inherent risk, related to both delivery and security.” Xlinks said the project would provide an equivalent of 8% of Britain's current electricity needs, or roughly 7 million homes. British officials plan to focus on other wind and solar projects to meet their goal to generate (產生) all of the country's energy from renewable sources by 2030. That was the I.C.R.T.
