Running 44@60 Podcast - plotting Trevor Lee's journey to the 2021 44 mile Cornwall Classic Quarter

If you're wondering why this episode is called thank you and good night it is because it is the final episode.I've had an absolute fantastic time. I've met some incredible people hosting this podcast since it first started in August 2019 not just as guests but as listeners and also at all the runs I've taken part in. It was only meant to help me complete the Classic Quarter which I did in May 2021 so it should've finished over 3 1/2 years ago .But here we are at episode number 173 and of course it was almost by sheer chance that this whole journey started.Back in February 2019 I was invited to speak at a business conference. The headline speaker was a guy called Jim Lawless who talked about a concept he had created called TamingTigers which essentially was about setting yourself challenges way beyond your comfort zone.Whilst listening to Jim, I was conscious that I was just over two years away from a landmark birthday for which I had been thinking about running a third career marathon, the previous two being in 2005 and 2010. Listening to Jim I realised that wasn't a Taming Tigers enough challenge. For some reason the name Classic Quarter popped up into my head and I looked it up over lunchtime to discover that it was a coastal path run from Lizard Point, which is relatively close to where I was living when my children were growing up, to Lands End. Undoubtedly the Taming Tigers bit was discovering it was 44 miles!I started calling the challenge 44 at 60 and as I already had a business podcast I decided that the best way to learn how to take on this challenge was to start a podcast so I could record all the great advice I knew I would be given. The first episode which was basically an introduction episode went live in August 2019, with episode two being my first ever coastal path race -  the White Rat. My first guest was the fabulous Andy Goundry who told me ultrarunning was an eating competition not a running competition and to make sure that I walked up all the hills in the race, but to run up all of them in training and keep smiling! Without doubt this podcast was a massive factor in achieving my goal of finishing the Classic Quarter and along the way raising over £7000 for the children's hospice Southwest and postrace writing the book 12 business lessons from running an ultra marathon. So many fantastic guests, so many great running adventures and so many great running community friends. I feel very privileged to have been able to do this. Thank you everyone - it's been a blast! Send us a textThe Running 44@60 podcast began as a learning / motivational tool for host Trevor Lee in his quest to run a first ever ultra - the Classic Quarter in 2021 - here's the story of Running 44@60 The first episode was broadcast in August 2019. The final episode - number 173 - went out on January 31st 2025.Trevor wrote a book on the back of the Classic Quarter: 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon - all proceeds go to the Children's Hospice South West

In this episode of #TheSpeakerShow, Maria Franzoni interviews Jim Lawless. Record breaking freediver and voted #1 Motivational Speaker outside of the US in the 2021 Global Guru rankings, Jim Lawless has inspired over a million people on five continents through his presentations and playbook for change ‘Taming Tigers'. As CEO of transformation architects Symmetry, my guest and his team have been instrumental in the adaptations of international organisations, fast-growth companies and Olympic Teams.  Author of the international best seller ‘Taming Tigers', he became a televised jockey (and lost 25% of his bodyweight) within 12 months of sitting on a horse. He also became the deepest free diver in British history within 8 months.  Both of these ‘impossible' adaptations were experiments to test and validate the playbook he shares. Both were done alongside his day job - as most transformations are. Outside of his work as well as being a Dad, he is a helicopter pilot, kundalini yoga practitioner, free diver and classical pianist. In this fascinating episode, we discuss: Is Resilience Redundant? Today I am going off topic for a very good reason: my good friend Joyce Bijl is going to do a fundraising triathlon (swim 3,8km, cycle 180 km and run (walk) 21,1 km) on 9 January 2021 as part of the Flying Dutchman Team to raise money for cancer research. In 2014 Joyce transformed herself as she was tired of being unfit by participating in the Oxfam Trailwalker (100 km run through the HK hills), stepping in the ring for a white collar boxing fight for a benefit gala and finishing a 6 day ultramarathon through the Sahara, the Marathon des Sables. Joyce was unstoppable until cancer hit her in 2018. She is grateful for the treatment she received which enabled her to start to recover and to slowly participate in the races again. On this episode I interview Jim Lawless; motivational speaker, author of the book Taming Tigers and living proof of why we all need to act boldly as time is limited. As a result of an unfulfilled job as a corporate lawyer and unsure about what the future looked like, Jim decided to act boldly and left the city to explore what would give him greater purpose in his life. Jim shares his story and how Taming Tigers came about. As a result of taking on a bet from one of the audience to ride a horse in a televised race, Jim embarked on training to become a Jockey. First of all it's worth pointing out that Jim had never been on a horse before in his life. People laughed of course and some of the videos of Jim (learning to ride) are hilarious. Taming Tigers is centred on Ten rules; 1.Act boldly today - time is limited 2.Re-write your rule book - challenge it hourly 3.Head in the direction of where you want to arrive, every day 4.It's all in the mind 5.The tools for Taming Tigers are all around you 6.There is no safety in numbers 7.Do something scary everyday 8.Understand and control your time to create change 9.Create disciplines - do the basics brilliantly 10.Never, never give up! Furthermore in this episode, Jim shares some of the risks that he's taken and how he sometimes feels confidently lost (similar to Gavin Oattes on episode 14). He talks about his own vulnerability and turning up messy. Some final words of wisdom from Jim; "Enjoy it. We're not here forever. Don't get down about it; let's enjoy today." Each week I invite one of my speakers to talk about their life, work, passions and leisure so that you can get to know the person who is the speaker behind the mic. My guest this week is a pioneer in the fields of change and performance shift and the author of the bestseller “Taming Tigers”. He always tests his ideas on bold fast change on himself first. He adapted from an overweight non-rider to televised jockey in 12 months and from non-free diver to the first Briton past 101m in 8 months - both whilst doing the day job. He embraces the lessons of neuroscience in delivering adaptation and change - ideas he first experimented with in his deep diving.  He confesses that when he was at school all he ever wanted was a job, he was terrible at sport and is a huge fan of Luke Bisson. Bio Jim Lawless is one of the world’s leading motivational speakers and a pioneer in the fields of change and performance shift. He has inspired and empowered over half a million people on five continents. Jim’s message is that change involves risk and uncertainty. The human’s evolutionary Fear Algorithm is designed to keep us away from risk and uncertainty. The Fear Algorithm: has an operating speed 20x faster than that of our conscious goal-planning brain has a hotline connected to our bodies’ hormone system is populated with data to help us survive in the old, industrial workplace It is essential to understand and manage our innate Fear Algorithm and challenge the old data.  Otherwise, we will “resist“ and “fear” making the changes that we wish to create. Author of the bestselling ‘Taming Tigers’ (Random House), Jim has taught the skill of change in Global and Fortune 500 companies, Olympic and Paralympic teams, business schools and government for two decades. A strong believer in walking his talk, Jim Lawless tested his approach to bold, fast change by becoming a televised jockey in just 12 months. At the outset he was 36, unfit, overweight, couldn’t take time off work and couldn’t even ride. To test his ideas on managing the neuroscience and physiology of fear (and fundraise), he took the British free-diving record in just 8 months. He is now the first Briton to dive deeper than 100m on a single breath of air. Jim started his career as a City solicitor. After a decade of lawyering with the name “Lawless” he had perfected the trademark wit and humour he brings to the stage. Over the past two decades, Jim Lawless has evolved to be one of the most in-demand motivational speakers in the world delivering over 100 major conference keynotes each year. What differentiates him, besides having proven his highly effective methodology personally, is his immense personal 1-1 connectivity with people in audiences of all sizes. He brings passion, energy, interactivity and amusing elements to the stage creating an engagement that transforms mindsets with ease.  Recorded: 27th June 2019  Links: More about Jim Lawless More about Maria Franzoni Ltd Connect with Maria on Linkedin Connect with Maria on FaceBook To book any of the speakers featured on the Speaking Business podcast, click here Listen here: Libsyn  Itunes  Soundcloud Stitcher Spotify
