What does it mean to be an explorer? What are the sacrifices one must take? What are the benefits of putting yourself through such hard physical challenges? This week we speak to Damian Browne, an extreme adventurer, peak performance athlete and International keynote speaker from Galway, Ireland. For the last 25 years Damian has pursued his human potential, relentlessly pushing his body & mind to their perceived limits; forging himself & his character in what he deems “a crucible life”. During a 16-year career as a professional rugby player, Damian donned the colours of some of rugby's European elite, including Northampton Saints & Leinster; where he won club rugby's biggest prize, The Heineken Cup. Since retirement from professional rugby, Damian has become one of the World's foremost extreme adventurers; undertaking some of the most demanding physical and mental challenges on the planet, including the 257km Sahara Desert ultra marathon, The Marathon des Sables, climbed 5 of the 7 Summits, a renowned mountaineering feat & most recently created history by becoming the first person ever to row from New York City to Galway, taking 112 days and in the process become one of only a handful of people to have rowed the Atlantic in both directions.Damian's drive to explore his physical & mental limits is not exclusive to ultra endurance events and he is a multi-time Irish indoor rowing champion, holding all-time, all-category records for the 500m and 1000m distance. We were lucky to have had Damian in the studio with us for this episode, a brilliant and deep character, we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did.Lots of love,Dave & Steve Hosted on Acast. Running With The Kenyans is the story of how Adharanand moved his family to Kenya for 6 months so that he could explore why Kenyan runners are so dominant. Adharanand discovered a talent for running at a young age, but like many kids in sport, ended up getting distracted along the way and not realizing his potential. He continued to run in adulthood, but never really pushed his limits due to family obligations with 3 young kids. As the world was watching Kenyan athletes rise to the top and sweep the podiums of many major races, Adharanand was wondering what their secret is. With the approval of his wife (who was up for the adventure), they moved their 3 young kids to Kenya for 6 months so that Adharanand could train with the best runners in the world. The book is divided into 25 numbered chapters. Each chapter included a piece of Adharanand's journey to improve his own running, find the Kenyan running secret and some side stories about people that Adharanand met along the way.Adharanand Finn is an Assistant production editor for the Guardian newspaper in the UK, freelance writer and author of 3 award winning running books:Running with Kenyans - the topic of this episodeThe Way of the Runner - Which talks about Japanese obsessive running cultureRise of the Ultra Runners – Which talks about ultra-endurance runners and what makes them want to complete gruelling endurance events like the Marathon des Sables. In August 2017, Nick Ashhill was 81 punishing days into his run from one side of America to the other- LA to NY. He didn't finish the run though.  He was the victim of what he is certain was a deliberate hit and run from some meth-head in a pick-up truck (my words, not his) accident that left him fighting for his life. 16 surgeries and 5 years later, Nick went back to the spot of his accident to finish what he started.  He's done some other pretty epic organised events too- like the Comrades ultramarathon in South Africa and the marathon de Sables stage race in the Morroccon desert. This is definitely one for the running nerds.  But I reckon its also just a pretty interesting story about an ordinary kiwi whose done some pretty extraordinary stuff despite some serious big hurdles to overcome.  If this clip sounds like a bit of you.  Subscribe and it'll be delivered to your device early Monday AM.

Welcome to episode 103 of the Women's Running podcast. I'm your host Esther Newman, and she's your other host, Holly Taylor. In this episode of the podcast, we're talking to the very lovely Sabrina Pace-Humphreys. But before that, Holly and I chat about ultrarunning and the races we'd be keen to take on. Then we chat to Sabrina, who we've had on the pod before but wanted to get on again because of three huge things. Firstly, she's just completed the very brutal Spine Race and we want to find out ALL about it. No spoilers here, although I wil let you into a little quote she says, which is: “The Spine race makes the Marathon des Sables look like a picnic on a summer's day” and that's probably all you need to know. Secondly, we want to talk to her about her book, Black Sheep, which has just been published, in which among other things details the racism she experienced as the only black kid in a tiny village in England. Thirdly, we want to talk to her about the event she's holding on September 11th this year, Black To The Trails, a day that she has created to encourage more black and brown people to run on trails. She's encouraging everyone to attend if you're interested in running trails for the first time, and it's going to be a brilliant celebration of trail running, with lots of music, food and facepainting, as well as guided runs. Then Holly and I come back at the end to do the quiz that we didn't have enough time to hold for Sab – Holly is in the hotseat and the theme is ultrarunning...LinksGet your hands on your first issue of Women's Running magazine for just £1. Today we spoke with John O'Regan - International ultrarunner, Martial artist, and Running coach John has conquered 7 marathons on 7 continents. This is a story of how a recreational runner learned about his body, studied physiology, and educated himself on the importance of preparation and planning…to conquer remarkable running feats, ultimately representing Ireland in several categories now. He competes in ultratrail, 100k and 24 hour and has a podcast called 'No Finish Line'. John defined ultrarunning for us and discussed why this sport is not crazy - it is about passion. He loves to run and loves where it brings him. Hear about a journey from the Marathon des Sables to Swedish survival training, to the Yukon, Poles - and what's next. John leaned into resilience, how to build it…and how to overcome the moment after the race, when you feel low - when the race is over. We learned about the value of discipline and sticking to a course for a specific goal, and how to listen to your body when you are physically and mentally challenging yourself. This was inspiring stuff! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Highlights

Bob is an ultrarunner, who started endurance sports at nearly 40, and didn't stop even reaching 77! Since 2003, Bob Becker has run the Boston Marathon, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, raced in the 150-mile Marathon des Sables stage race in the Sahara Desert in Morocco and the 167-mile Grand 2 Grand Ultra stage race in the southwestern U.S.  In August 2016, Bob completed the 120-mile TransRockies stage race in Colorado.  In addition to two top 50 finishes at “Badwater” and the 2015 “Double”, Bob has completed multiple hundred and fifty-mile races on trails and roads, in the mountains and along the coast, provided crew and pacing support for friends who have run across the entire United States and completed many other adventures while surviving radical prostate cancer surgery in 2006 and recovering from a fractured femur during a race in ‘05. Bob ran his first marathon in 2002 at the age of 57.In this episode, Vikas discusses with Bob all about this year's Badwater 135, his struggle while completing the races in extreme heat, and a lot more. In the House of Commons, Dan has sat on the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy and the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee, and held several shadow ministerial roles. He also served as the Labour Party's lead for the 100th anniversary of the First World War commemorations and passed a Private Members' Bill that changed the law on organ donation. In 2018, Dan was elected the inaugural Mayor of South Yorkshire. As Mayor, he was responsible for economic regeneration, public transport and adult education across South Yorkshire. He stepped down from role at the recent local elections.Dan is a trustee of the Speaker's Parliamentary Placement Scheme, a social mobility programme designed to widen access to parliament by offering paid internships to those who may not have access via traditional routes. In his spare time, Dan enjoys keeping chickens, walking, and running in the countryside, supporting his local youth choir and Barnsley FC. He has completed the Marathon des Sables, has run eight London marathons to raise money for Cancer Research UK and his local hospice, and is a big supporter of Parkrun. He lives in Barnsley with his wife, three children and their dog. He published his book, Long Way Home in 2020.Dan Jarvis's top leadership tip is that times can and will be tough. Love, life and death, and all the stuff in between, will present challenges, and opportunities. But if you keep calm, keep going and, where you can, keep a smile on your face, it's remarkable what can be achieved. And if all else fails, put the kettle on and have a hot brew. It always helps. She wanted to compete at the Marathon des Sables to celebrate turning 50 but COVID threw that plan out the window.  She made it happen in 2022, finishing the 250k stage race in 55hrs.  We chatted with her about the challenges of training in Manitoba's harsh winters for such a hot, dry race in the desert, her emotions on the start line and her most difficult stage when she ran out of water.   Wiebe says some of her biggest challenges were keeping her feet in good shape (her years of nursing came in handy), staying hydrated, and being active with little rest. In conversation with Nattu Natraj, the first known person of Indian origin to do Badwater 135, a tough grueling ultra foot race. The Badwater marathon is 135 miles of hell in 140F temperatures. From Death Valley to Mt. Whitney. It gets so hot that shoes melt on asphalt. Therefore, the runners often seek solace on the white strips on the side of the road, where it is relatively less hot. To prep for Badwater, Nattu completed the Marathon Des Sables. Marathon des Sables, or MdS, (French for Marathon of the Sands, also known as Sahara Marathon)[1] is a six-day, 251 km (156 mi)[2] ultramarathon, which is approximately the distance of six regular marathons.
