In this episode we're joined by Professor Joshua Jipp to talk about Pauline Theology as a Way of Life. Professor Jipp is Professor of New Testament and Director of the Carl F. H. Henry Center for Theological Understanding at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Deerfield, IL), and the author of the book that we're excited to talk about in this episode, Pauline Theology as a Way of Life: A Vision of Human Flourishing in Christ (published by Baker Academic). Over the course of our conversation Professor Jipp talks with us about how his new book is a Pauline Theology, but one that is focused on the practical outworkings of Paul's thought, which allows him to avoid abstraction and conflation of Paul's ad hoc pastoral responses to his congregations. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. John Anthony Dunne, Dr. Madison Pierce, and Dr. Logan Williams.

Appropriating insights from empirical findings and theoretical constructs of 'embodied cognition', Corporeal Theology: The Nature of Theological Understanding in Light of Embodied Cognition (Oxford UP, 2023) explores how theological understanding is accommodated to the bodily nature of human cognition. The principle of divine accommodation provides a theological framework for considering the human cognitive capacities that are accommodated by theological concepts and ecclesial practices. A rich portrait of the nature of human cognitive capacities is drawn from an emerging paradigm in cognitive science, embodied cognition, which proposes that cognition depends upon bodily sensorimotor systems to ground concepts and to draw upon environmental resources. Embodied cognition's hypothesis that human concepts are grounded in sensorimotor states poses a theological quandary for God-concepts, since identifying God with sensorimotor content risks idolatry. The incarnation resolves this problem in theological epistemology by grounding God-concepts in bodily understanding, while avoiding idolatry. Thus, the incarnation represents an accommodation to human conceptual capacities. Embodied cognition further hypothesises that cognition relies on sensorimotor engagement with the world rather than internal mental representations. Subsequently, in addition to the brain, bodily states and environmental artefacts 'scaffold' cognitive processes. A scaffolded view of cognition highlights the cognitive import of embodied religious practices, which choregraph the body and curate material culture. Tanton applies dozens of studies identifying mechanisms by which bodily or environmental factors influence cognition to the embodied and material dimensions Christian practices. On account of their inherent cognitive effects, practices are theorised to have intrinsic 'embodied' meanings alongside 'symbolic' ones established by conventions. Consequently, liturgy is seen as a bearer of theological content rather than merely an expression of it; a locus of religious experience; and a crucial determinate of religious and ethical formation. Again, the embodied nature of Christian liturgy is understood in terms of accommodation. Embodied cognition research helpfully illuminates the details of human embodiment to which theological understanding must be accommodated. There was a time when revival was the study and focus of careful theologians. Sadly that changed around the middle of the 19th century. Since then, careful writers have allowed the theological ground of revival to become fallow. In recent years, the study of this mysterious reality has become a more common focus of reading and request of prayer. Because of this growing desire for revival, we are going to spend the next several episodes discussing the biblical signs and fruits of revival, along with how we are to respond when we hear reports of God visiting a particular place with revival. In this initial conversation, John Snyder and Teddy James share some helpful works from the past and what we can do now to prepare our souls for the manifest presence of God in our midst. Joel and Parker (the SONS OF THUNDER) enjoy a pretty loose and free-ranging conversation on everything from abstract objects, to the plausibility of Christianity for Gen Z'ers, and beyond. This episode also serves as Part 2 of the Sons of Thunder conversation on God and Time. This is the first time the guys have had a guest on, so enjoy! How should we think about suffering and evil? More specifically, which biblical truths should we plant deep in our hearts before we find ourselves in the midst of suffering? On this episode of the podcast we share a lecture by D.A Carson on this important topic. Rather than giving us pointers on how to endure suffering after it has begun, Dr. Carson provides six foundational pillars that will help us think rightly about suffering before it has come upon us.D.A. Carson serves as Research Professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL.We want to say a special word of thanks to Trinity International University for giving us permission to share this and other resources with EFCA pastors and church leaders through our podcast. This lecture comes from Trinity’s Carl F. H. Henry Center for Theological Understanding. Many other helpful resources from The Henry Center can be found here.
