What if you could redefine your identity beyond titles and roles? How do you know which path to take when you come upon a fork in the road along life's journey? Join us, as we explore these profound questions with our remarkably wise guest, Dave Schutter. From Military to Ministry - Dave Schutter's Wisdom Journey Our special guest Dave Schutter had his sights set on a military career, dreaming of an appointment to West Point. But God had a different plan for his life. From his dreams of West Point to a transformative mission trip to Albania, Dave's journey is a testament to adaptability, faith and finding purpose. Together, we unravel the intricate balance of separating who we are from what we do, sharing experiences from his time as a military chaplain in Afghanistan and his work in pastoral ministry. It's an engaging conversation steeped in life's simple joys and the wisdom found in unexpected places.   More about Pastor Dave Schutter Dave is a military veteran, a pastor and a pizza aficionado. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, as the son of a military man, Dave dreamed of attending West Point, but a sports injury prevented him from passing the fitness entrance exam. He didn't give up on that dream and years later Dave qualified for that appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. But he turned down that opportunity in favor of something different.   Today, Dave leads the congregation at Northwest Presbyterian Church as Senior Pastor. Notably in Dave's life, he served as a military Chaplain in the US Army, including an active deployment in Afghanistan. That tour of duty earned him the prestigious Bronze Star.   Dave Schutter graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in 1997 and earned a Master of Theology degree from Westminster Seminary in 2017. He completed his undergraduate studies at Miami (Ohio) University in 1993. Dave is also a contributor to the Jonathan Edwards Encyclopedia (Eerdmans, Fall 2017) and the Jonathan Edwards Global Sermon Editing Project.   Dave, his wife Kim, and their three children live in the Columbus Ohio area.   Resources Connect with Dave on LinkedIn Link to website for Dave's church - Northwest Presbyterian Church   Credits Editor + Technical Advisor Bob Hotchkiss Brand + Strategy Advisor Andy Malinoski PR + Partnerships Advisor Rachel Bell Marketing, Social Media and Graphic Design Chloe Lineberg   Stay Connected with Us on Social YouTube @themainthingpod Twitter @themainthingpod Instagram @themainthingpod Facebook  @TheMainThingPod LinkedIn   Help Support and Sustain This Podcast Become a subscriber. In this episode, we sit down with author and pastor Patrick Miller to explore his book, Joyful Outsider, through the lens of mental health. As our culture changes rapidly, many of us feel isolated, overwhelmed, and disconnected—but what if embracing our role as outsiders could lead to peace and joy? Patrick discusses how Jesus invites us to experience the “joy of missing out” (JOMO) instead of succumbing to the pressure of fitting in or chasing after approval. We dive into practical ways to navigate stress, anxiety, and fear in today's world by finding our identity in Christ, not in external validation. Whether you identify as an artist, protestor, builder, advisor, ambassador, or trainer, Patrick provides actionable insights on how to cultivate mental well-being and emotional resilience through faith. Tune in for a hopeful conversation on healing, finding purpose, and embracing the peace of being a joyful outsider. Patrick Miller is a pastor and cultural commentator who writes about politics, culture, and technology, contributing articles to Christianity Today, Newsweek, The Gospel Coalition, and other publications. In this episode, Hunter chats with Courtney Doctor to begin our new series, Displaying the Gospel through Discipleship. One way we display the gospel and live on mission is through our discipling relationships. Yet, so many of us are intimidated by Christ's command to go and make disciples. In this series, we will grow in our understanding of discipleship and how we can practically go about doing it.  Over the past two years, Courtney and Hunter have been working on a verse-by-verse Bible study on the book of Titus entitled Titus: Displaying the Gospel of Grace. Many of us are familiar with the classic Titus 2 passage on discipling, but through this entire series, we hope to highlight the beauty of intergenerational relationships in the church and what it actually looks like to display the gospel through those relationships. In this episode, they're talking about what discipleship is—whether formal or informal—what discipleship has looked like in their lives personally, and what Scripture says should be at the heart of it all. Courtney Doctor received an MDiv from Covenant Theological Seminary and currently serves as the Director of Women's Initiatives for The Gospel Coalition.  FULL SHOW NOTES DISCUSSION QUESTIONS How do you define discipleship? How has discipleship played a role in your life? What are the things to “insist on” in a discipleship relationship? What could formal or informal discipleship look like in your life right now? Who is someone (older or younger) who you could ask about beginning a formal discipleship relationship together? What might you do or implement based on what you learned in this week's episode? Stephanie here! Do, you, like me, feel more like an outsider in the American culture today than you did ten years ago, as a Christian? If that's the case, you're not alone. The question is, what kind of outsider will we become? Will we become a combative outsider and rage against your enemies? Will we become a conformist outsider and mirror the world around us? Will we become a conflict-averse outsider and avoid confrontation at all costs? GIWEAWAY COMING UP! In our February newsletter, we will give away THREE copies of "Joyful Outsiders" in partnership with Patrick and his publisher, Zondervan. We will also give 3 copies of our previous January book interview ("Happy Lies" by Melissa Dougherty, episode 374). So make sure to be signed up to our newsletter for a chance to win. Sign up here: https://www.gospelspice.com/signup How can I convey to you the timely importance of this book? This has to do with the questions that we encounter every day and that make us feel like outsiders. Like, how do I react when my child's teacher claims that there are hundreds of genders? Or, what do I say when my best friend calls me a Marxist because I'm troubled by systemic racism? Or, how do I talk with my mom when she posts conspiracy theories on Facebook? Or, how do I talk to my coworker who says that all Christians are bigots? For these important questions that we have to face today, there isn't one size fits all solutions. We need to first remember that as Christians, we are outsiders to the culture we live in. As Patrick Miller, says, we live in Babylon, and yet we are called by scripture to both make our home in Babylon and resist Babylon. How do we do that? Jesus calls us to live seamless lives, and yet the fear that we encounter daily when we experience being an outsider, that fear has a habit of making scenes in our lives. How can we together resist Babylon's efforts to tear the fabric of reality, even as we work to repair this fabric, and influence the world for Christ? It's really understandable that we want to relieve the tension. We could change our beliefs to fit in, we could rage against our enemies and force them to agree with us, or we could just retreat from it all. But do these options really help, or do they just help us feel more helpless and angry and confused? Do they make us more, or less Christlike? Jesus has so much for us. He's called us to be a joyful outsider like him. He was crucified as an outcast outside the city. Now he welcomes us to join him; to die to ourselves and discover that sacrificial love has the power to change the world. In Joyful Outsiders, pastors Patrick Miller and Keith Simon show us how to be a joyful outsider by laying out six ways to navigate a confusing culture at home, at work, and beyond. They draw on the examples of biblical characters to introduce six types of joyful outsiders: the artist, the protestor, the builder, the advisor, the ambassador, and the trainer. We might be an outsider in today's world, but that doesn't mean Jesus can't use us to change it. TAKE THE TEST go to joyfuloutsiders.com to discover how to address culture in the way God wired you.  MORE ABOUT “JOYFUL OUTSIDERS” This practical guide helps you find peace and clarity in a confusing culture. Through it, you will learn healthy, biblical ways to both cultivate and resist the world around you. You will learn how to change the culture without becoming like it. In Joyful Outsiders, you will: Discover joy by embracing your identity as an outsider Find which of the six ways God is calling you to follow Experience freedom from fear of the world and anger toward it Learn how to both resist and cultivate the world around you MEET PATRICK MILLER Patrick Miller is a pastor and cultural commentator who writes about politics, culture, and technology, contributing articles to Christianity Today, Newsweek, The Gospel Coalition, and other publications. In this episode, Damein Schitter discusses following Jesus in politics with Robert Cunningham. Robert is the founder and director of Christ for Kentucky, and the former Senior Pastor of Tates Creek Presbyterian Church. He and Damein were at Covenant Theological Seminary at the same time, and Robert is now a current Ph.D. candidate at the University of Leicester, researching the role of religion in America's founding era. In their conversation, Robert and Damein draw on David Koyzis's book, Political Visions & Illusions, to make a bold statement: politics often masquerades as a modern idol, promising salvation and redemption much like religious doctrines. Their exploration then challenges us to reconsider where we place our faith and trust amidst a polarized society.Taking a deeper dive, Damein and Robert look into the concept of political ideologies as "isms" that offer false promises of redemption, akin to religious gospels. They highlight the dangers of viewing political opponents as heretics, fueled by echo chambers and partisan media. They underscore the importance of renouncing these ideological idols and reorienting ourselves towards the kingdom of God, advocating for a gospel that inherently carries social implications without equating salvation with social deeds. They invite us to grapple with engagement in a secularizing world, finding balance between withdrawal and deeper involvement. In conclusion, they shift their focus to the broader social responsibilities of Christian faith, challenging the tendency to compartmentalize it as merely a personal practice. Inspired by John Stott's interpretation of being "salt and light," they encourage believers to actively create a world that mirrors God's will. They also address the misconceptions about political divides, highlighting the significance of connecting with real-life neighbors rather than relying on algorithm-driven echo chambers. They land on an emphasis on the power of feeling seen and the importance of engaging deeply with your community to gain a nuanced understanding of today's political landscape. For more about Robert, you can visit his website, and find the episodes on his podcast going further into David Koyzis's work here: Every Square Inch

In this episode, Damein Schitter sits down with Jay Sklar, who is Professor of Old Testament and Vice President of Academics at Covenant Theological Seminary. Their conversation tackles why Leviticus feels so daunting and seemingly irrelevant, from its legalistic nature to its cultural oddities and ritual focus. Dr Sklar passionately makes the case for its importance, emphasizing its pivotal role in the Pentateuch and shedding light on the profound significance of the Day of Atonement.Leviticus isn't just a book of old laws; it's a guide on living in holiness and understanding the depth of sin and atonement. Damein and Jay delve into how knowing the sacrificial system of Leviticus is essential to fully grasping the gravity of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. A foundational knowledge of Leviticus can transform our understanding of Jesus' life and ministry. From ritual and moral purity to the broader context of ancient texts, Damein and Jay discuss how interpreting Leviticus through its historical and cultural lens can prevent modern misinterpretations. They explore the parallels between ritual purity and contemporary health protocols, shedding light on their significance in ancient Israelite culture. Moreover, the symbolic acts and the sacrificial system in Leviticus enrich our appreciation of Jesus' atoning work. Our hope is that their conversation will enhance your theological perspective and spiritual connection to the life and ministry of Jesus!

“The Lord also said to Moses, ‘Give the following instruction to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.'” - Leviticus 19:1-2 Genesis begins the story of humanity and the God who wanted a family to love and to love him. Exodus offers the first look at the lengths God will go to care for his people on a grand scale. Leviticus, the third book of the Bible, shows us the lengths God will go to care for his people on a personal scale. Leviticus is, ultimately, about relationship – it is a holy God telling the people of Israel how they can be in relationship with him despite the brokenness of sin. It's an extraordinary book in teaching about who God is and who we are. Now, Leviticus has a reputation of being a rather difficult or tedious book – one that many people skip. But as we navigate through Leviticus, today's guest will make you want to dive into Leviticus head first and see it in a new, exciting way.  To help us navigate Leviticus, host Jason Wieland is joined by Dr. Jay Sklar, Vice President of Academics and Professor of Old Testament at Covenant Theological Seminary, and author of not one but two commentaries on Leviticus. In this conversation, Jay gives an incredible explanation about why we shouldn't skip Leviticus but instead see it through new lenses that will make you see the book in a whole new way. Navigating the Bible is a special podcast series, part of the Doable Discipleship Podcast. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. In this episode, Dawn is joined by Kay from the podcast Fuck My Work Life, and the pair talk about the unsolved murder of 50 year old Elizabeth Mackintosh. Elizabeth Mackintosh was born in Scotland in 1940. She grew up in a devout family; her father, James, was a theology professor and later a moderator for the Free Church of Scotland. Elizabeth worked as a nurse and health visitor in Edinburgh, then a social worker in London, before moving to America. In St. Louis, she was a student at The Covenant Theological Seminary, working towards a master's degree in biblical counselling while also working part-time as a cleaner to finance her studies.Tragically, Elizabeth was found murdered in the seminary's men's toilet on 26 March 1990. The investigation into her death saw multiple suspects but ultimately remained unresolved, even as new leads emerged over the years. Despite advances in forensic technology and renewed efforts by the police, the case remains open, with the prime suspect, a fellow student and Elizabeth's cleaning supervisor, never charged due to insufficient evidence. Elizabeth's remaining family continue to seek closure for this heinous crime that took away a beloved sister and daughter. Elizabeth's life and untimely death left an indelible mark on her community and all who knew her. Her story is one of dedication, faith, and the enduring quest for justice. You can listen to Fuck My Work Life wherever you listen to your podcasts. SOURCES: Please see our website for all source material and photos at https://scottishmurders.com/episodes/elizabethmackintoshSHOW:Support Us:ko-fi.com/scottishmurdersPatreon - patreon.com/scottishmurdersMerch - teepublic.com/user/scottishmurdersWebsite - scottishmurders.comTwitter - @scottishmurdersInstagram - @scottishmurderspodcastFacebook - facebook.com/scottishmurdursYouTube - @ScottishMurdersLinktree - linktr.ee/scottishmurdersCREDITS:Scottish Murders is a production of https://www.cluarantonn.com/Hosted by Dawn YoungResearched and Written by Dawn and Kay Edited and Produced by Erin Ferguson - instagram.com/erinfergus0n/Production Company Name by Granny RobertsonMUSIC:Dawn of the Fairies by Derek & Brandon Fiechter

Today I'm chatting with Dr. Mimi Larson, Executive Director of the Center for Faith and Children and Assistant Professor at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Mimi, a scholar-practitioner and advocate for children's spirituality, brings over 25 years of experience in ministry and curriculum development. She focuses on children's faith formation, in particular, how young children make meaning of their faith. Most recently, she has been exploring children's engagement in sacred play in worship environments. She holds advanced degrees from Wheaton Graduate School, Covenant Theological Seminary, and Concordia University. What I really love about Mimi is her desire to equip everyone who spends time with young children – whether a parent, a Sunday morning volunteer or an early educator - she wants everyone to understand and value the importance of bringing the spiritual into our everyday. In this episode, we discuss how physical spaces impact learning and spiritual development in young children. Mimi gives us a wonderful insight into the importance of both the physical environment, such as furniture and toys, and the overall atmosphere and relationships within the space. We explore what it looks like for educators to create a welcoming and safe environment that is child-centered and conducive to learning and the importance of integrating spiritual elements into the classroom, such as prayers, blessings, and discussions about God's creation. Together, we offer advice for schools that share space with Sunday school and emphasize the importance of teamwork and communication. Children are valuable in society and we need to prioritize and value them in our actions, not just in our words! I just love listening to Dr. Larson's calming and peaceful voice. She has such a heart for children and forming faith within them.  I especially loved her practical tips for being intentional in considering a child's perspective when we're setting up classroom spaces. Sit on the floor and look around; get on your knees and look around. This is what children see. Is it helpful for their learning? Is it inviting and welcoming? Is it appropriate? In case you sped through the promo, I want you to know that Mimi will be one of our keynote speakers this summer at our state conference in Austin and Dallas. I really hope you'll join us at one of those locations as she talks about the 8 ways we can nurture young children's faith.  When was the last time you sat down on the floor in your classroom?  What did you see? Send us an email at hello@earlychildhoodchristiannetwork.com   As always, we would love to connect with you on Instagram and on Facebook

About the Episode: Julie Lowe shares her passion around kids/teens, especially those that are suffering. As Julie felt led by Scripture and the stories of broken families in the Bible, she felt led to pursue her counseling degree. Julie and her husband have a beautiful story behind their adopted children – the beauty as well as the hardship. She dives into what the Gospel is as it relates to raising children, families, and brokenness. She describes the “fast food” lifestyle of families instead of nourishing relationships through time and deep engagement, which involves being countercultural instead of embracing what is around us as it relates to technology specifically. She offers encouragement to families even if they feel it is too late to develop a relationship with their child or have “failed” in certain ways with their families. She highlights the importance of looking to God rather than the world or even other families as to how to shepherd their family looking for a formula. Julie also gave an equipping conversation at PCPC on her book “Safeguards,” and we have that linked below in the resources. About Our Guest: Julie Lowe is an author, speaker, and counselor. She holds an MA in counseling from Biblical Theological Seminary, is a licensed professional counselor with over twenty-five years of counseling experience, and is a registered play therapist supervisor. Julie has extensive experience teaching, speaking, and consulting with churches, schools, and other organizations around the country. She regularly teaches on topics such as marriage, women's issues, sexual abuse, body image issues, parenting, adoption, and child maltreatment issues. She is trained in leading mandated reporter trainings and provides numerous trainings on child sexual abuse. Julie has a registered therapy dog that she works with both professionally and on a volunteer basis. Her work and resources have been widely promoted by organizations such as Focus on the Family, The Evangelical Counsel for Abuse Prevention. and Paul Tripp's Connecting Podcast. What is a Vision Statement and why does it matter? Is there a point in having a "Vision Sunday" at the beginning of the year, or is the congregation better served by "dripping vision" throughout the 52 Sundays of the calendar year? Is having a church vision even Biblical? Mike asks these questions and more to the more-than-capable Luke Simmons in a fun and informative conversation about the difference between church vision and church mission, and so many other topics having to do with leading healthy churches.  Luke Simmons is the founding and Lead Pastor of Ironwood Church, a growing church in the Phoenix metro area. He's been in full-time pastoral ministry since 2004 and has the scars to prove it. As a catalytic leader, he's been curating resources and coaching leaders for over a decade. Because Luke loves to learn and enjoys sharing what he's learned with other pastors, he founded Faithful and Fruitful to help pastors experience a lifetime of joyful, God-honoring ministry. Through resources, tools, and coaching experiences, he helps pastors build their confidence to lead for the long-haul in a changed and changing world. Faithful and Fruitful is a biblical vision of ministry and a lot of fun. As an experienced church planter, Luke also leads the Redeemer City to City Church Planting Incubator for the Surge Network in Phoenix, where he helps planters begin their churches with theological vision, effective systems, and sustainable personal habits. Luke has a communications degree from the University of Illinois, where he played third base for the Fighting Illini, as well as an M.A. in Missional Theology from Covenant Theological Seminary. In James 1:27  we read:"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. "But the reality is that adoption usually doesn't involve “Annie” style storylines. All kids will struggle at points during their development, but children who have been through the foster care system often have nuanced challenges. In light of this, how can the church better come alongside and care for adoptive families? Most of us as moms are already pretty overwhelmed and sometimes the suggestions for how to assist adoptive families sounds even more overwhelming.Adoptive mom Christine Gordon  encourages us to "think smaller." Christine shares encouragement and practical suggestions for little ways we can come alongside one another regardless of our parenting situation. In this episode, Irwyn Ince and I talk about hope in the context of race, oppression, community, and lament. He inspires us to persevere in hope through difficult times. We explore the roots of hope in Christ despite past rejections, detangling oppressive actions from the gospel message, and the importance of fixing one's gaze on Jesus and enduring through suffering by looking to his example. So join us as we actively push against narratives of division by demonstrating a third way of Jesus and regularly check where we are placing our hope. Irwyn Ince is the coordinator of Mission to North America, part of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). Formerly, he was a pastor at Grace DC Presbyterian Church. He is also the author of The Beautiful Community. In 2018, Ince was unanimously elected as the forty-sixth Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) General Assembly moderator—the first African American to hold the position.Ince is a graduate of City College of New York, Reformed Theological Seminary, and holds a DMin from Covenant Theological Seminary. True Believer: The Unsolved Murder of Elizabeth Mackintosh

Elizabeth Mackintosh was killed in the chapel basement at Covenant Theological Seminary. The right tour guide will point out the spot, but Covenant hosts no memorial for her. And it's not like Elizabeth was a stranger passing through… she was a well-respected student at the time she was killed. It's been 33 years since her death, so why are some people still finding out about it for the first time?  Because for all practical purposes any traces of her, and the fact that a murder even took place, have been wiped from Covenant's institutional memory. In this first episode of our series we take a high-level look at Elizabeth's murder, the characters in the story, and what a small but growing number of PCA pastors and members think should be done about it. Think of this as the 30,000 foot overview. Then in the episodes to come we'll zoom in on several key aspects of the case. What really happened in the murder of Elizabeth Mackintosh? God only knows the answer.Show Notes- Covenant Seminary's December 5th statementVisit www.truebelieverpodcast.com to see additional materials related to each episode or to get in touch with us.
