There is a name Jesus spoke over two ordinary fishermen that has echoed through two thousand years of church history: Sons of Thunder. In this message, Pastor Mike traces the remarkable story of James and John from a fishing boat to the ends of the earth and calls us out of passivity and into the identity Jesus spoke over us before we ever earned it.

A study of God's love James and John needed to learn about agape love, sacrificial love. They ultimately learned from Christ what it meant to love God and love people. B is for....Boanerges. You voted and chose to learn more about the Sons of Thunder. James and John were unusual picks to be Jesus' disciples, but was there something about their fiery, passionate, personalities that attracted Jesus, or was all of their bluster too toxic?

Just because people have a lot of passion about something doesn't mean they're right! Passion without transformation leads to dysfunction. John was called the apostle of love, but he didn't start out that way — Jesus called him and James the sons of thunder because their passion was misdirected! John allowed Jesus to soften him and didn't allow who he used to be to define him. What are you letting control your identity? If you allow yourself to be defined by who you used to be, God can't take you to where you're supposed to be! Let Jesus redirect your thunder for His glory, and allow God's transformational power to rewrite your story!

The Apostles, James and John and lessons in humility. James and John were known as the Sons of Thunder. They were bold, loud, brazen fishermen. Jesus had to teach them not only divine love, agape love, but humility. There are many lessons on humility in Scripture. Lessons about how our actions and choices affect those around us, and lessons about love, and… The post The Sons of Thunder, part 2 | Common Men, Uncommon Calling appeared first on Pillar of Truth Radio.

Following an interesting conversation between Juan Carlos Martinez (former Catholic now Presbyterian) and James Prather (former Presbyterian now Catholic), we realized so much more ground needed to be covered. Not to worry! James brought in Michael Gormley of Lay Evangelist and Evan did a little more than just host on this third episode of this dialogue. This time, we narrowed the scope to just the question of salvation. Do Catholics really teach that works are necessary for salvation? Do we agree on grace? Or is the divide pretty much set in stone at this point?

Not to worry! James brought in Michael Gormley of Lay Evangelist and Evan did a little more than just host on a sequel episode. This time, we narrowed the scope to just the question of authority. Is it scripture alone? Are popes really infallible? We go pretty deep on this episode of Theology on Air. And yes, a third episode has already been recorded and will be out soon.

When Jesus first calls the disciples, he nicknames James and John the Sons of Thunder. Scholars don't know what Jesus meant by these epithets, but the two brothers do have quite the tempers in the Gospels. Pastor Jacob explores why Jesus would call these two hotheads into ministry and why Jesus decided to call each of us.
