Ideas shape what is deemed by those in culture as plausible or implausible, desirable or undesirable. Jesus understood this well, which is why he takes ideas, especially those at the core of human experience, so seriously. Those living in the way of Jesus are called to do what he did, to be a faithful witness—a trustworthy guide—who makes knowledge of God and life in his kingdom available to others. On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, PBAU professor, Dr. Paul Gould joins us to talk about the upcoming "Faithful Witness Annual Apologetics Conference" to be held October 25-26 at PBAU in West Palm Beach. Why is it important to understand the origins for this life from a Biblical perspective—can't I just figure it out by living it myself? How does an ancient Bible tell me where I am headed in 2024? How do we know we can trust the Biblical truths educating us about where we are headed? Have these values changed compared to ancient Near East interpretations? Dr. Paul Gould and I discuss the biblical explanation for these philosophical questions that keep you up at night. Paul M. Gould, Professor of Philosophy of Religion and Director of the M.A. Philosophy of Religion program at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Dr. Gould is the author or editor of eleven scholarly and popular-level books including A Good and True Story (Brazos, 2022), Cultural Apologetics (Zondervan, 2019), Philosophy: A Christian Introduction (Baker, 2019) and The Story of the Cosmos (Harvest House, 2019). He has been a visiting scholar at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School's Henry Center, working on the intersection of science and faith, and is the founder and president of the Two Tasks Institute. This book by Paul Gould attempts to show that Christianity holds the most satisfying answers to life's biggest questions. I cover two chapters that focus on how life got started and the origin of species.
In this episode, Brian Auten & Chad Gross engage with philosopher Paul Gould to discuss the profound connection between beauty, love, theism. They delve into why beauty is more likely on theism than naturalism and explore various philosophical perspectives on love and the recognition of beauty.Topics Covered:1. Introduction to the Topic of Beauty: - Beauty in Theism vs. Naturalism: - Gould explains why beauty is more likely on theism than naturalism. - Discussion on the analogy between human artistic creativity and the universe's beauty. - The improbability of a universe saturated with beauty under naturalism's unguided, blind forces.2. Philosophical Arguments and Analogies: - Human Artistic Creativity: - Creating beautiful art requires skill and intention, paralleling the idea of a divine artist behind the universe. - Entropy and Beauty: - Examination of why beauty persists despite the laws of entropy and randomness under naturalism.3. Exploring the Nature of Love: - Defining Love: - Gould outlines five features of love: 1. Multi-directed 2. Complex 3. Deep and Enduring 4. Active and Passive 5. Valuable - Discussion on how contemporary philosophical views often fail to capture these features fully. - Aquinas's wisdom on love as a comprehensive framework.4. Beauty as a Properly Basic Belief: - Plantinga's Concept of Properly Basic Beliefs: - Inquiry into whether the recognition of beauty can be considered a properly basic belief, not needing argumentation to be justified. - Experiences of Beauty: - Distinctions between judgments of beauty, experiences of beauty, beautiful things, and beauty itself. - The Christian story's integration of beauty, truth, and goodness, particularly through the narrative of the cross.5. Listener Questions and Practical Insights: - Interacting with Listener Inquiries: - Addressing questions about the recognition and judgment of beauty. - Discussion on the practical implications of philosophical views on love and beauty.Key Quotes:- Paul Gould on Beauty and Naturalism: "If naturalism is true, and the universe is just the result of unguided, blind forces, you would not expect beauty to saturate the world. By analogy, just as beauty is very hard for human artists, it's surprising for it to saturate the world without a divine artist."- **Brian Auten on the Christian Story:** "The cross being the God of the universe, sacrificing himself for sinners to save them, even when they hate him, is the most beautiful story there is. It brings tears to your eyes because it's beautiful."- Paul Gould on Love: "Love is multi-directed, complex, deep and enduring, active and passive, and valuable. We need an account of love that captures all these features."================================We appreciate your feedback. If you're on TWITTER, you can follow Chad @TBapologetics.You can follow Brian @TheBrianAutenAnd of course, you can follow @Apologetics315If you have a question or comment for the podcast, record it and send it our way using www.speakpipe.com/Apologetics315 or you can email us at podcast@apologetics315.com

Did God create the number 2? Is the number 2 the sort of thing that could be created? Perhaps numbers and other abstracta are necessarily existent entities. If numbers necessarily exist, does that somehow undermine God's sovereignty? These are difficult questions, but don't worry. I have Dr. Paul Gould on to explain everything to us. Credits Host: R.T. In this episode of the Reclamation Podcast, we invited Dr. Paul Gould to talk about the role of our minds in loving God and reading the Bible. If you were in a high control group, freely using your mind was probably discouraged, so this can be a totally new concept. Whether your spiritual abuse experience included this aspect or not, though, Paul does a great job of adding clarity and offering practical ideas for your relationship with God. This inevitably leads us to talk about the role of stories. Shakespeare was the best writer of all time when it came to fictional stories. He was a master of the craft. Our guest this week on Apologetics Profile, Christian philosopher Dr. Paul Gould, sits down with us to provide the True and Good Story of why the laws of the universe exist in the first place and why there is order, unity, harmony, and beauty at the heart of modern science's quest for a theory of everything. Instead of an amalgam of dry, philosophical syllogisms and isolated factoids, Paul weaves together a compelling story of clues that point us all toward the greatest Story ever told. .Paul M. On the next two episodes of Apologetics Profile we sit down with Christian philosopher, avid outdoorsman, and father, Dr. Paul Gould to talk about his latest book A Good and True Story. It is an apologetic work written in the prose of story and narrative, written with unbelievers and skeptics in mind. Paul translates the philosophical and scientific arguments into an inviting and compelling story - a great book to share with your atheist or skeptic friends or family members. .Paul M. Gould is an associate professor of philosophy of religion and director of the M.A. Philosophy of Religion program at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Gould earned his doctorate in philosophy from Purdue University. He is the author or editor of ten scholarly and popular-level books including Cultural Apologetics, Philosophy: A Christian Introduction, and The Story of the Cosmos. He has been a visiting scholar at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School's Henry Center, working on the intersection of science and faith, and is the founder and president of the Two Tasks Institute. He is a widely sought-after speaker in apologetics and philosophy. He speaks regularly at universities, churches and ministries around the country, including Summit Ministries, the C.S. Lewis Institute and the Evangelical Philosophical Society's annual apologetics conference. My guest is Dr. Paul Copan, a noted defender of the faith and professor of philosophy at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Paul has authored over a dozen books on apologetics, as well as edited and contributed to many more. He is with me today to discuss this vitally important topic of, in the words of Peter, “giving a reason for the hope within.” (I Peter 3:15) In this podcast we discuss: What is “apologetics”? How Paul got interested in studying apologetics Why it is important all Christian students understand apologetics Understanding Christianity as a “knowledge tradition” rather than just a “belief tradition” Why speaking in terms of “world views” requires atheists to also defend their beliefs Some examples of how non-Christians and Christians have been helped by apologetics Biblical passages that seem to say faith is important, not reason “The problem of evil”--a common objection requiring a response (and a response) The role of the Holy Spirit in apologetics The most important apologetic topics to understand today Old Testament ethical challenges like God possibly commanding genocide Responding to challenges to the biblical view of sexuality The importance of a proper understanding of faith and science How to begin studying apologetics Tips for having good apologetic conversations ”with gentleness and respect” Resources mentioned during our conversation: Paul Copan's website www.PaulCopan.com Paul Copan, True For You But Not For Me: Overcoming Objections to Christian Faith _________, Is God a Moral Monster? In a culture consumed by consumerism in the age of globalization, the Christian who seeks to make a case for his or her dependency on an old rugged cross and an empty tomb must compensate for the lack of “common ground” between the believer and the unbeliever. Because of the secularization of the culture and the dwindling of the Christian mind, there are now few epistemological topics on which the believer and the unbeliever can converse without talking past each other simply because their categories of thought are vastly different; in fact, it was Blamires's fear that many Christians, hoping to woo the culture, might end up unwittingly borrowing more from secular categories of thought than biblical ones. The secularization of the Christian mind proves to be one of the biggest hurdles to clear when it comes to modern apologetics. Not only is the apologist seeking to build a rational defense of the faith, but now must also contend with the fact that much of the zeitgeist has shed itself of the more traditional categories of thought that would allow for natural inroads into conversations about that faith. Ironically enough, the real merit of being a culturally aware apologist can be seen (at least in principle) in Scripture. Consider the oft-discussed instance in Acts 17, wherein the apostle Paul visits Athens and finds within an altar to an “unknown god” the opportunity to preach the gospel to the Athenians in the Areopagus. He quite literally exegetes the culture of Athens in the first century and concludes, “Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in all respects” (Acts 17:22ff) and manages to leverage their interest in religious affairs to steer the conversation to Yahweh and His messiah. In a sense, cultural apologetics is one of the oldest methods, used to some degree by at least one of the apostles. Evidence-based apologetical methods, while certainly having merit, especially in the twentieth century, arose more as a response to an increasingly secularized culture that worshipped at the altar of science and swore by the scientific method and philosophies such as empiricism. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with JOURNAL contributing writer Cole Burgett about his online exclusive article “What Has Athens to do With America? Scripture exhorts us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. How much does the world subtly influence our thinking about God? In our day and age we are accustomed to "Googling" or asking Alexa for facts and information about anything from the weather to world news. How does this impact our thinking about God? Is God just a set of propositions to be defended? And must we exhaustively demonstrate evidence for God through rigorous proofs and experiments? On part two of our discussion with Christian philosopher Dr. Esther Lightcap Meek, we unpack some of these problematic ideas about modernist thinking and Esther offers insightful correctives to modern ideas through integrating the thoughts of scientist and philosopher Michael Polanyi and theologian John M. Frame in her own thesis as "covenant epistemology." Whether it is the art of science, riding a bike, or knowing your auto mechanic, knowledge is inherently personal and participatory. We are beings in bodies, living souls, divine image bearers, subjects of our Creator. Our knowledge of God comes through participating in the community and work in which He has placed us.Dr. Esther Lightcap Meek (BA Cedarville College, MA Western Kentucky University, Ph.D Temple University) is Professor of Philosophy emeritus at Geneva College, in Western Pennsylvania. She is a Fellow Scholar with the Fujimura Institute, an Associate Fellow with the Kirby Laing Center for Public Theology, and a member of the Polanyi Society. She offers courses for Theopolis Institute, The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, and Regent College. Esther now works from Steubenville, Ohio. Her books include: Longing to Know - The Philosophy of Knowledge for Ordinary People (Baker Publishing Group, 2003) Loving To Know - Covenant Epistemology (Cascade Books, 2011) A Little Manual For Knowing (Cascade Books, 2014) Contact with Reality (Cascade Books, 2017) Be sure to check out our other podcasts on the importance of philosophy in the Christian faith! In this episode we talk with Dr. Paul Gould about how his book Cultural Apologetics prepares believers in a post-christian world to share a vision of the Christian faith that is both plausible and desirable. Many Christians no longer perceive the world in its proper light. As a result, the Christian imagination is muted. Moreover, the church has grown anti-intellectual and sensate, out of touch with the relevancy of Jesus and how to relate the gospel to all aspects of contemporary life. Cultural Apologetics addresses this malaise by setting forth a fresh model for cultural engagement, which details practical steps for reestablishing the Christian voice, conscience, and imagination. . The world we live in, a world that some call a “post-Christian” world, has what today's podcast guest Paul Gould calls a dis-enchanted view of reality. He believes that materialism and scientism, among other influences, have left us with a way of seeing, thinking, and living that leaves no space for beauty and wonder. We now live in a world bereft of mystery. Gould says many Christians have uncritically accepted this materialistic understanding of the world. As a result, the Christian imagination, conscience, and voice in the culture have become distorted or muted. Paul Gould's new book "Cultural Apologetics" addresses these issues by setting forth a fresh model for cultural engagement, rooted in the biblical account of Paul's speech on Mars Hill, which details practical steps for reestablishing the Christian voice, conscience, and imagination. Paul Gould received his PhD from Purdue University and is currently a Henry Fellow at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and teaches philosophy and apologetics in the College of Graduate and Professional Studies at Oklahoma Baptist University. In addition to the book we're going to spend most of our time with today, "Cultural Apologetics," he is also the coauthor of "Philosophy: A Christian Introduction" and "The Story of the Cosmos: How The Heavens Proclaim the Glory of God." The Colson Center's Warren Cole Smith had this conversation with Paul Gould at Summit Ministries in Manitou Springs, Colorado, at a recent youth conference where they both were regular speakers.
