Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, causing about 1 in 5 of all deaths; the rate is similar in Colorado. During the Great American Smokeout -- when the American Cancer Society encourages people who smoke to make a plan to quit -- we look at a proposal in Denver's city council that aims to address the issue, calling for an end to the sale of all flavored tobacco products in the city to protect kids and advance health equity. Then, we speak with a vape shop owner. Also, quitting smoking is hard, but there are health benefits to be found with success, and the impact of menthol cigarettes on communities of color.

Tobacco contains nicotine, a more powerful addictive substance than marijuana, opium, or cocaine. Furthermore, today's cigarettes contain many harmful chemicals in addition to tobacco. Before 1964 there was a general understanding that cigarettes are not good for health (“coffin nails” was one nickname), and in 1964 the US surgeon general's report made this official, although a high percentage of Americans continued to smoke. Six years after the surgeon general's report, a community in Massachusetts proposed a day without smoking, which soon grew into the Great American Smokeout, celebrated by many giving up the cigarette habit on the third Thursday in November. Dora Celestino from the Council on Addiction Prevention and Education (CAPE) visits RadioRotary for this show outlining the dangers of cigarettes, and progress since the 1970s. Menthol amplifies nicotine addiction, making it easier for people to start smoking but harder for them to quit. Knowing this, the tobacco industry marketed menthol combustible cigarettes to African Americans for decades. Yet in 2009, when the federal government banned flavored cigarettes, menthol was the blatant exemption. In April of 2021, after years of inexplicable delay, a federal lawsuit brought by plaintiffs including the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council forced the FDA to finally announce it would “begin the rule-making process” to end the sale of menthol cigarettes. However, that can take years before the ban is officially in place. That's why The Center for Black Health & Equity is fighting deadly menthol tobacco products in real time at community levels across the country. In this week's episode, PAVe interviews The Center's Greg Bolden about the No Menthol Movement in Atlanta; local partner D'Jillisser Kelly of the H.E.A.R.T coalition will discuss on-the-ground efforts including the Great American Smokeout on November 18th.

More than 34 million Americans currently smoke in some form, and according to the Centers for Disease Control, smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability and death in the United States.  Acceptance of smoking in public has seen a dramatic decline in recent years, as more and more places become smoke free environments.  But just because smoking is less accepted in public spaces doesn't mean smoking itself is in decline.  In fact, due to COVID-19 related stress issues, the United States has actually seen an uptick in the number of smokers.   On this episode of The 9 Line, we speak with Dr. Melissa LaVan and Dr. Stephen Slubar about what the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System is doing to help Veterans kick the habit, how smoking can make you more susceptible to the worst impacts of COVID-19, and the upcoming Great American Smokeout on the 18th of this month.

Decades ago, tobacco Industry research  revealed that menthol amplifies nicotine addiction, especially in African Americans; the more melanin in a smoker's skin,  the greater menthol's impact. Armed with this knowledge, Big Tobacco methodically marketed menthol combustible cigarettes to African Americans; the more melanin in a smoker's skin, the greater menthol's impact.(In 2009, when the federal government banned flavored cigarettes, menthol was the blatant exemption.)Last April, after years of inexplicable delay, a federal lawsuit brought by plaintiffs including the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council forced FDA to finally announce it would “begin the rule-making process” to end the sale of menthol cigarettes-but that could take years. That's why the Center for Black Health and Equity is fighting deadly menthol tobacco products in real time at community levels across the country. In this week's episode we interview the Center's Greg Bolden about the No Menthol Movement in Atlanta; local partner D'Jillisser Kelly of the H.E.A.R.T coalition will discuss on-the-ground efforts including the Great American Smokeout on November 18th.

Dear Listeners, We are taking a month long break to come back with some more amazing content for you. Till then we will be recasting four of our favourite episodes from the past. Hope you enjoy it! :) This week, we recast our conversation about the history of smoking. History The origin of tobacco can be traced back to 6000 BC, in the American continent. It was considered medicinal and used as a painkiller. Smoking cannabis can be traced back to 2000 BC, India. It is also mentioned in Atharvaveda. Cannabis smoking in the middle east was common, especially Hookah. Even women took part in it privately. Christopher Columbus played a big part in getting it to the European continent 1531 - first tobacco cultivation in Europe. By 1600, tobacco became an integral part of the society as a good section started smoking. In 1560, Jean Nicot took tobacco with him to Spain from France In 1571, a Spanish doctor named Nicolas Monardes, apparently “found out” tobacco could cure 36 health problems (what a joke!) In 1588, Thomas Harriet, a Virginian, said that smoking gives the daily dose of tobacco. Not surprisingly, he died of nose cancer. English King James I was one of the first to speak against smoking Tobacco used as an exchange during these time. The barter system did rely on tobacco. Africa was introduced to tobacco by Arab traders in the 13th century, It was popularised by French merchants in 1600 by bringing tobacco to Senegal & Gambia. The 17th century saw Japanese use a device called Kiseru. It was a long-stemmed device. In 1760, Pierre Lorillard set up the Lorillard Tobacco Company in NYC. it is the oldest tobacco company in the US. Nicotine was discovered in 1826 and found to be harmful to humans. 1836, Samuel Green mentioned that tobacco is an insecticide, a poison which can kill. Chinese got into the habit of smoking opium due to colonialism. The British got them addicted to opium and it resulted in the Opium Wars. Chewing tobacco became popular amongst cowboys in the 19th century. It was more popular than smoking. By 1901, smoking was catching up with 6 billion cigars and 3 billion cigarettes sold. In 1902, Britisher, Philip Morris set up Marlboro brand 1913, R. J. Reynolds set up the Camel brand of cigarettes. World Wars saw a tremendous increase in smoking. It was called soldier's smoke and was included in the soldier's ration. By 1923, Camel took over 45% of the market in the US. Which led to Marlboro marketing it as women's cigarette in 1924. They called it Mild as May. The number of women smokers tripled over the next few years. Nazi Germany has one of the most powerful anti-smoking movement. During the 1950s evidence of smoking leading to lung cancer began popping up. In 1952, Kent Brand developed Micronite, a cigarette which contains asbestos. It was shelved shortly afterwards. In 1953, Dr Ernst L. Wynders found that cigarette tar causes a tumour in mice In 1956, first menthol cigarette was released by RJ Reynolds called Salem. In 1964, regulations in cigarette advertisements were placed after the finding on Smoking and Health report made it clear that smoking causes lung cancer. In 1965, Britain takes cigarette commercials off television In 1966, health warnings started popping up on packets In 1968, Bravo, a non-tobacco cigarette brand made of lettuce. Mega Failure! The US takes off cigarette advertisements in 1971 the first national Great American Smokeout takes place in 1977. It is an annual event which takes place on the third Thursday of every November. In 1982, it is found out that second-hand smoking also leads to lung cancer In 1985, lung cancer overtakes breast cancer as the number one cause of women's death. India and Smoking The first act to add a statutory warning on packets came into existence in 1975 Public smoking banned in Kerala in 1999. The first state in India to do that. On September 8, 2000, the complete ban on tobacco and smoking advertisements came into

It is held on the third Thursday of November. The inception of the Great American Smokeout stems from a 1970 event in Randolph, Massachusetts. High school guidance councilor Arthur P. Mullaney asked people to give up cigarettes for one day and donate the money they would have spent on buying cigarettes to a high school scholarship fund. The GASO encourages Americans to quit tobacco smoking. People are challenged to stop smoking for at least 24 hours assuming that their decision not to smoke will last longer, hopefully forever. Today, more than 43 million people in the United States smoke cigarettes, that is about 1 in 5 adults.

These actions continue to erode trust in the government. While rates of depression and other mental health issues continue to rise due to these shutdowns, Orange County’s hospital capacity is solid, and our positivity rate is still in the Orange Tier. I have strongly advocated for a regional approach with greater local control to allow our dedicated local health agencies to work together with the local medical community and develop plans to fight the virus. The Great American Smokeout – November 18th, 2010 Integrating the discussion into your classroom   The month of November brings us one of the most proactive topics of the year. The third Thursday of November (the week before Thanksgiving) marks an annual event called the Great American Smokeout. The American Cancer Society (ACS) challenges Americans to stop smoking for 24 hours to kick off what they hope will be a change in lifestyle that will last forever. It all began in the mid 70’s when Massachusetts, Minnesota and California presented public challenges for smokers to give up their cigarettes. In 1976, the California division of the ACS successfully encouraged nearly one million smokers to quit for the day. The annual event has flourished, and each year smokers choose this day to mark the beginning of the end of their smoking.   We encourage you to integrate this topic into your classroom discussions. We have provided several ways to do this below. Here is our new favorite website. The California Youth Advocacy Network is designed for colleges, but we recommend that you scroll down to the bottom of the page where they show 2010 Sample Advertisements and Flyers. http://www.cyanonline.org/College/Events/GreatAmericanSmokeout2010/tabid/1185/Default.aspx Integrate the discussion: Create your own school advertising campaign to help others learn. Integrate this topic for the week in art, homeroom, health, advisors, technology/media class etc.     Here are some tips from the American Cancer Society (ACS) website: In 2009  "The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act" was signed into law and gives the FDA the authority to regulate the sale, manufacturing, and marketing of tobacco products and protects children from tobacco industry’s marketing practices. On the ACS website they have a fantastic calculator that can tell a smoker how many cigarettes they smoke per day, month or year and how much it costs them to smoke. http://www.cancer.org/Healthy/toolsandcalculators/calculators/app/smoking-cost-calculator.aspx   Integrate the discussion as a classroom project for math, health, homeroom etc. One of our schools made a spinning wheel of death using cigarette smoking as a basis for mathematical calculations.   How To Quit http://www.cancer.org/Healthy/StayAwayfromTobacco/GuidetoQuittingSmoking/index http://www.californiasmokershelpline.org/ §         Make the decision to quit §         Set a quit date and choose a help plan §         Learn how to handle withdrawal §         Staying quit (maintenance)   Research shows that smokers are most successful in kicking the habit when they have some means of support, such as: õ     nicotine replacement products õ     counseling õ     stop-smoking groups õ     telephone smoking cessation hotlines õ     prescription medicine to lessen cravings õ     guide books õ     encouragement and support from friends and family members How To Help A Friend – Many People say “It Is One Of The Hardest Drugs To Quit!” As a friend or family member of a smoker, you are in an uncomfortable situation. Tobacco smoking damages nearly every organ in the human body, is linked to at least 15 different cancers including: lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity (mouth, tongue, and lips), pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, pancreas, cervix, kidney, bladder, acute myeloid leukemia.   You should know that it may take several attempts to quit and relapse is part of the process for some people. Each time they quit they will feel bad about failing. Encourage them to set another date to quit. The sooner they try again and the longer they remain smoke-free each time will ensure their confidence and success. Integrate the discussion Have a classroom discussion about how difficult it is to help someone to quit. Practice how to use “I” statements and research available methods of quitting in your community. Does your library, counseling or health/nurse office have available information?   Secondhand smoke – “A known human carcinogen (cancer causing agent)” If the smoker claims they aren’t concerned about their own health, they should consider here is what family members are up against as a consequence of living with a smoker. Secondhand smoke comes from sidestream smoke (smoke that comes from the end of the lit cigarette, pipe or cigar) and mainstream smoke (smoke that is exhaled by a smoker).   In the United States alone, each year it is responsible for: An estimated 46,000 deaths from heart disease in non-smokers who live with smokers.  About 3,400 lung cancer deaths in non-smoking adults.  Other breathing problems in non-smokers, including coughing, mucus, chest discomfort, and reduced lung function.  Up to 300,000 lung infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis) in children younger than 18 months of age, which result in 7,500 to 15,000 hospitalizations.  Increases in the number and severity of asthma attacks in about 200,000 to 1 million children who have asthma.  More than 750,000 middle ear infections in children. Secondhand smoke may be related to breast cancer. Integrate the discussion: Make a list of all the ways that people can accidentally be around secondhand smoke and a list of all the ways to avoid it. Work as a group to find polite ways to excuse yourself from a smoking person, room or area without insulting the smoker or hurting their feelings.   Pets and cigarette smoke It’s not just the humans that smokers should worry about; their pets are inhaling the smoke as well. (http://www.tobaccofreeutah.org/smokingpets.htm) has a page explaining the toxins that our pets are exposed to.   Cats are known to get cancer from licking the tar off of their fur when cleaning themselves. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2002/07/020730075305.htm     Californians Unite California proudly has the second lowest smoking rate (12.9% of adults smoke – CDC 2009) in the country. With positive and gentle encouragement we could be the leaders of the nation in smoke free communities. If you have a loved one who is not ready to quit, plant the seed and put it on the calendar to quit the next time the Great American Smokeout or World No Tobacco Day comes around.   If you have a loved one who is ready to quit smoking, they don’t have to wait another year to quit. In an attempt to reduce the 5.4 million yearly deaths from tobacco-related health problems, World No Tobacco Day (sponsored by the World Health Organization since 1987) is observed around the world on May 31st. http://www.who.int/tobacco/en/   Other references for help: American Heart Association - Telephone: 1-800-AHA-USA-1 (1-800-242-8721) Internet Address: www.americanheart.org American Lung Association - Telephone: 1-800-LUNG-USA (1-800-586-4872) Internet Address:   Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) -Internet Address:   Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - Office on Smoking and Health Internet Address: www.cdc.gov/tobacco/ http://www.cdc.gov/media/pressrel/2010/r101104.html?s_cid=tw_cdc216 National Cancer Institute -Telephone: 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237) Internet Address: www.cancer.gov Smokefree.gov -(Info on state phone-based quitting programs) Telephone: 1-800-QUITNOW (1-800-784-8669) - Internet Address: www.smokefree.gov
