In this episode, we welcome psychotherapist and author Phyllis Levitt as we dive deep into the critical role mental health plays in both personal fulfillment and societal well-being. How have shifts in gender roles since the '60s and '70s continued to shape our relationships and the structure of society? Join us as we explore America's social challenges through the lens of family systems, unpacking the widespread impact of unresolved trauma and mental health issues on individuals and communities alike.Phyllis draws from her book *America in Therapy* to illustrate the nation as a "dysfunctional family," weighed down by discrimination, injustice, and systemic inequality. She emphasizes that healing—on both personal and societal levels—demands understanding, cooperation, and nonviolent conflict resolution. This timely conversation highlights the mental health toll of the pandemic, especially on midlife women, and the importance of nurturing both emotional resilience and a strong immune system. Our discussion delves into breaking the cycle of generational trauma and the urgency of personal and collective healing. Acknowledging inherited traumas and the privileges gained from past injustices opens the door to a more inclusive perspective. Throughout, we champion communication, empathy, and self-care, encouraging listeners to find their voices through writing, advocacy, or creative expression. Tune in for an inspiring conversation that calls us all to foster a more compassionate, equitable world for future generations.Bio Phyllis Leavitt graduated from Antioch University with a Masters' Degree in Psychology and Counseling in 1989. It's election season in the United States, and it affects us all, no matter how involved we are in politics. Deep fractures run through our families, neighborhoods, and workplaces, affecting our ability to live and work with each other. Phyllis Leavitt's new book, America in Therapy, directly addresses this problem and what we can do about it. She joined me at the Edges of Lean to talk about the intersections of political division and continuous improvement. Phyllis Leavitt Phyllis Leavitt's journey into psychology began long before her formal education. Growing up in a close-knit community, she was always drawn to helping others and understanding the complexities of human emotions. This passion led her to volunteer at local shelters and community centers during her teenage years, where she witnessed firsthand the profound impact of trauma and the power of compassionate support. Phyllis Leavitt graduated from Antioch University in 1989, earning a Master's in Psychology and Counseling. She co-directed Parents United, a sexual abuse treatment program in Santa Fe, New Mexico, until 1991, after which she dedicated herself to private practice full-time. Over the course of 34 years as a psychotherapist, Phyllis worked with children, families, couples, and individual adults, specializing in issues related to abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, their consequences, and the essential components of healing. She is the author of two books, "A Light in the Darkness" and "Into the Fire." KEY TOPICS IN THIS PODCAST: 00:01:44 Motivation for writing the book "America in Therapy" 00:06:00 The role of dysfunctional family dynamics in societal issues 00:11:48 Identifying and understanding symptoms of trauma and abuse 00:20:00 Bringing psychological principles to national conversations 00:26:10 Importance of seeing individuals, not labels 00:31:17 The need for deep listening and understanding of each other's stories 00:35:11 Introduction to Leavitt's book "America and Therapy" 00:39:04 Advice for young people: Find appropriate ways to contribute KEY TAKEAWAYS: Family dynamics and trauma influence behaviors across workplaces and society. Labeling people diminishes their humanity and escalates conflict. Sharing personal stories fosters empathy and bridges divides. Small acts of kindness can create a positive societal ripple effect. Dysfunctional family dynamics lead to symptomatic behaviors in individuals. Mass shootings may indicate broader societal dysfunction. Healing from abuse requires rebuilding bonds of compassion and care. Psychology provides tools for deep listening and conflict resolution. Safe spaces for dialogue are essential for sharing experiences. Individuals can promote positive change through kindness and advocacy. Memorable Quotes From Phyllis Leavitt. "Healing from trauma is not just about rebuilding oneself; it's about nurturing the bonds of compassion that connect us all." Phyllis shares the importance of understanding the psychological underpinnings of societal issues, breaking cycles of abuse, and the importance of fostering individual and national healing. In Portland, parents filed a lawsuit against the Portland Association of Teachers for over $100 million, citing a November 2023 strike that led to nearly a month of school closures for 44,000 students. The suit claims the strike was illegal under Oregon law, which limits strikes to mandatory bargaining subjects. Parents allege severe disruptions to their children's education and well-being, seeking compensation and legal measures to prevent future occurrences. The lawsuit was initiated by attorneys Patrick Hughes and Daniel Suhr, known for their significant legal battles in Supreme Court cases. The complaint can be viewed here. For GLSEN's 2024 Day of Silence, the theme is "Rise Up, Take Action," encouraging students to actively fight censorship and discrimination rather than remaining silent. Resources include participating in the Rainbow Writes Award, joining the GLSEN Youth Membership, taking the National Student Council Survey, hosting events, and leveraging ACLU resources against LGBTQ+ discrimination in schools. Critics argue this promotes activism over education. Parents are urged to review school materials for activist content. In Sherwood, Oregon, transgender high school athlete Aayden Gallagher sparked controversy by winning a girls' track event, outrunning biologically female competitors. Critics, including former NCAA champion Riley Gaines, accused adults involved of promoting unfair competition. The incident raises questions about the Oregon School Activities Association's policies on trans athletes, which aim to balance gender identity respect with fair competition. Debate intensifies over whether biological males should compete in female sports.Contact Portland Public School's Title IX Program Manager and explain your concern with the policy:Liane O'Banion lobanion@pps.net 503-568-2646In Osseo, Minnesota, hundreds of students opted out of a school lesson on LGBTQIA+ history and culture, following the school board's progressive "LGBTQIA+ History and Culture Resolution." The community has shown significant pushback against the resolution, which includes recognizing Pride Month and supporting gender-affirming practices. Critics, including the group 279 Parents United, argue the curriculum represents political indoctrination, prompting widespread student opt-outs and parental protests.Affiliate Shoutout: Name: Cami Strasser Affiliate City: Grangeville, IdahoBio: Cami became an affiliate for Parents' Rights In Education because she wants K-12 schools to get back to teaching the basics: reading, writing, and math. In this episode of KAJ Masterclass LIVE, Khudania Ajay engages in a profound conversation with Phyllis E Leavitt, an esteemed author and psychologist. Explore why Phyllis believes America is in the midst of a mental health crisis and the contributing dynamics.
On this episode, I sat down with Phyllis Leavitt to discuss America's Mental Health this week. We dig deep into why her new book America in Therapy is so timely.**** When I became a psychotherapist, I never imagined I would one day be entering a “political” arena. But the more I worked with widespread family dysfunction and its horrifying legacy of pain and violence, the more I realized that the greatest threat to our survival as a country and as a species is our declining mental health.I knew what we learned about healing family violence can and must be applied to healing America. I felt compelled to leave the confines of my office and speak to a broader audience. I wanted to share my message of urgency to get ourselves on a path of healing, and I wanted to share a message of Hope that we can restore ourselves to Safety, Peace, and Love by healing the wounds we have suffered and the wounds we have inflicted that keep a cycle of violence going. I wrote America in Therapy for all those hungry for this message.I graduated from Antioch University with a Master's in Psychology and Counseling in 1989. I co-directed a family-based sexual abuse treatment program called Parents United in Santa Fe, New Mexico, until 1991 and then went into private practice full-time for the next 30-plus years.I have worked extensively with abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, their aftermath, and some of the most important elements for healing. My focus today is on my latest book, America in Therapy: A New Approach to Hope and Healing for a Nation in Crisis.I have also published two other books, A Light in the Darkness and Into the Fire, which chronicle my personal healing journey. I live with my husband in Taos, NM, and I am retired from my psychotherapy practice, focusing on writing and speaking.******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@betertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaThis episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/X5bcTBEY49AInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomHave a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcast©2023 Better To...Podcast with D. Imagine growing up in an environment devoid of love, support, or even basic respect. Now, imagine the coping mechanisms one might develop in such an environment, only to find that these mechanisms are not beneficial in the long run. That's what we delve into with seasoned psychotherapist, Phyllis Leavitt. From tracing the roots of societal issues back to familial or community-based trauma, we dissect the impact of discrimination, abuse, and neglect on an individual and society at large. We highlight the urgent need for more psychological education to understand and navigate these dynamics, further discussing how these problems are mirrored on a broader scale, threatening societal stability. Are you aware of the two possible outcomes of an abusive upbringing - learned helplessness or identifying with the aggressor? Phyllis guides us through these dynamics and how they play out within our homes and society. We also touch on the overlooked gender dynamics and their societal impact. The conversation takes a deeper turn as we discuss the imbalance of power between men and women, the pendulum swing between genders, and the need for balanced role models. But it's not all doom and gloom. We explore the impact of small acts of kindness and love within a community. The role of generosity in healing communities is highlighted, along with the sense of belonging that can deter destructive behaviors. We then switch gears to discuss the long-term effects of emotional pain and discrimination, emphasizing the crucial role of love and care. Finally, Phyllis gives us a sneak peek into her upcoming book that aims to underscore the importance of kindness and respect in transforming situations and lives. Join us as we delve into these pressing societal issues from a fresh perspective.PHYLLIS Bio and linksI graduated from Antioch University with a Masters' Degree in Psychology and Counseling in 1989. Our guest on the Poetic Resurrection Podcast is Phyllis Leavitt, a psychotherapist and author. We discuss her upcoming book America in Therapy where she utilizes her thirty-year practice in psychology and relates it to the state of the country. This is an interesting and informative episode where the dynamics of family and relationships is discussed and applied to what is currently happening in our country. Phyllis Leavitt graduated from Antioch University with a Masters' Degree in Psychology and Counseling in 1989. She co-directed a sexual abuse treatment program called Parents United in Santa Fe, New Mexico until 1991 and had a small private practice before going into private practice full time. She has been a psychotherapist treating children, families, couples, and individual adults for 32 years, and has worked extensively with abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, their aftermath, and some of the most important elements for healing. An author of two published books, A Light in the Darkness and Into the Fire, that focus on her spiritual journey, and she is presently working with a professional editor on the book I have written called America in Therapy. She lives in Taos, NM and she's mostly retired now, focusing on writing. Her website is www.phyllisleavitt.com. “Writing has always been my path and my practice. For most of my life, I have sought deeper connection in some form—to myself, a higher consciousness, and a greater understanding of the meaning and purpose of human existence. I have participated in a wide variety of spiritual practices, healing modalities, a deep connection to nature and art, and in the blessings and challenges of relationship and motherhood. I became a psychotherapist over thirty years ago and did many years of therapy myself. Through it all, writing has been my constant companion and guide. It has gotten me through the darkest times in my life, brought me the greatest wisdom and fulfillment, and it is now my primary creative pursuit and the way I seek to share all that has been given to me. I have written two books about my spiritual journey—A Light in the Darkness and Into the Fire—and I have just completed my third book about bringing America to therapy. Both my inner work and all my psychological experience over many years, have taught me that, for the most part, we are as emotionally, mentally, and spiritually healthy as our human environment and the family systems we live and participate in. Some of us make it out of the most abusive conditions despite a lack of support or a map to follow, but many of us do not, and what I have found is that we are all at risk from abuses that go unchecked and continually fuel a cycle of violence. My new book is dedicated to helping make common knowledge everything I have learned about how we can repair our fractured human relations in ways we can all implement in the lives we currently live. My deepest wish is that we both understand the severity of the dangers we face from escalating divisiveness, hatred, and violence, and, at the same time, feel hopeful that no matter what our sphere of influence, we can each play a meaningful part in restoring ourselves to peace, safety and caring reconnection to one another. My deepest hope is that together we bring to the Family of America the same healing we are learning to bring to individual families— and thus to all our children, who will inherit everything we leave them.” Phyllis Leavitt lives with her husband in Taos, NM. She has three amazing grown children and three beautiful grandchildren and is a lover of art, nature and gardening. She has a Masters Degree in Psychology and Counseling from Antioch University and has had a private psychotherapy practice for over thirty years. She is recently retired and is now focused on writing.

She is a business owner, mother and wife and is fully aware of how destructive national policies are for Coloradans. Policies are crushing the economy and families through inflation, and unnecessary programs incur debt for future generations who have no say in today's political arena. Guest David Horowitz, who grew up as a “red diaper baby,” talks about his new book, I Can't Breathe: How a Racial Hoax is Killing America. The nation is divided because of the racial hoax rhetoric disseminated in mainstream media. David gives details on what he describes as false reporting on George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, two examples from the book, and follows up with both their histories. In George Floyd's case the prosecutor did admit that he had no evidence of a racial basis in Floyd's death. Black Lives Matter's main focus is to destroy America no matter how it hurts individual people of every race. Turning his attention to Washington, D.C., David refers to it as a “fascist regime.” This regime calls parents “domestic terrorists” while supporting the radical left that burned cities to the ground. America is moving away from accomplished achievement in favor of skin color and gender. David's closing remarks are to defund the schools and let parents choose what is in their children's best interest in the educational arena.
Elizabeth Boisson is the President and Co-Founder of Helping Parents Heal. She has four beautiful children, two of whom are in spirit: Chelsea, who passed when she was two days old, and Morgan, who transitioned at the Base Camp of Mount Everest in Tibet while on a university exchange program with 13 other students when he was almost 21 years old. She also has two beautiful daughters: Alix, 28, pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Health at the Gillings School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Christine, 26, who recently graduated with a master's degree in art history from University College London. On October 20, 2009, while Morgan was undergoing CPR on Mount Everest, Elizabeth asked his roommate to put his phone up to Morgan's ear. Then, while speaking to her son, she felt him hug her from the inside. It was at that moment that she realized that love lives forever. A week later, Elizabeth started Parents United in Loss and then began holding monthly parent meetings in Arizona. Three years later she joined forces with Mark Ireland to create the nonprofit support group Helping Parents Heal, which currently has over 130 affiliate groups and 17,500 members throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, South Africa, India, Australia, and New Zealand. Elizabeth lived for several years in New Delhi, India, with her family while her father worked for the World Health Organization, and then spent 15 years in France while studying and then starting a family. She did her undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, France. She also taught at both universities. In addition, Elizabeth is a certified yoga instructor and teaches yoga for healing grief. Website: Facebook: Instagram: Twitter: YouTube:

As we see critical race theory integrated more and more into education systems across the country, it is the new lack of diversity of perspective that many parents tack aim with. The Boston-based group Parents United saw what their kids were taught during remote learning and found the subject matter to be one-sided, inflammatory, and at times not age appropriate. Executive Director and co-founder of Parents United, Ashley Jacobs, says “kids are being taught what to think rather than how” and joins Dan to discuss the group's campaign for true diversity of thought.
Gregg Jarrett, Fox News Legal Analyst, Host of The Brief, his new podcast and author of two bestsellers, Witch Hunt and the Russia Hoax, had a podcast and an article out on CRT where goes through the racist nature of Critical Race Theory and Deborah Flora who runs a non-profit, Parents United America, which has been mobilizing parents against not only CRT but all matters of efforts by school boards to shut parents out of education decisions. She stood up to her own school board in Colorado. The Sean Hannity Show is on weekdays from 3 pm to 6 pm ET on iHeartRadio and Hannity.com. As more children prepare to return to school we are joined in the #tortoiseshack by two members of Parents United: Olive O'Connor, who is an international healthcare advocate and mother of four and Zara Flynn, who is a registered Counselling Psychologist and mother of three. We discuss their mammoth deep dive into the covid statistics which shows that schools are not the safe environment we are repeatedly told they are. Their data shows that Covid-19 cases in children increased more than 1,000% after schools reopened and Hospitalisations increased by 161% over the same period not openly available to parents, we discuss why safe reopening of schools and online learning for vulnerable children have not been given the attention the obviously deserve. Education and health should not be competing. One size certainly does not fit all. Support this podcast and get access to hundreds of additional posts at patreon.com/tortoiseshack

In this week's episode I sat down Brenda Stewart, founder of The Addict's Parents United and the Mother of two adult sons who have suffered with substance use and addiction. Together we cover the effects on the family members, in particular the parents of a son or daughter afflicted with an addiction or alcohol problem. Our side of the house can be crazier and become as sick (if not sicker) as the one struggling with chemically fueled behavior. And we are not usually even high. Those in the peripheral get triggered, suffer from PTSD, depression, anxiety, stress induced physical conditions and so on. Addiction effects the health of EVERYONE. Also - stress led both of us to experience panic attacks. Brenda and I discuss that subject and share coping methods. Because those are the WORST! We read questions from parents and family members, including how to manage when a son or daughter says vicious things or makes threats for money, how to manage the stress, fear and sadness, and what might someone say to a friend or family member who has an addicted son or daughter. We both agree on one thing for sure - families DO recover! But it's a group effort. Listen in for this information and HOPE filled conversation! Brenda's organization The Addicts Parents United can be found on Facebook and at https://www.tapunited.org/ Check it out!

From finding their way into "the rooms" as a result of addiction presenting in the first of Brenda's two sons, Mark and Brenda Stewart hit the ground running in their own emotional recovery, stability, and marriage. They then came full-circle to launch one of the nations largest, most well-respected online family support communities. Listen in as the Stewarts open their story to give rich insight about coming together as a blended family, managing the disease of addiction in the midst of that, and healing your way forward as a strong family unit. Mark and Brenda share great information and encouragement for families facing adversity, and give powerful tips for how to navigate those tough times in healthy unity. Closing the episode with strong perspective about Ohio's Constitutional Amendment, Issue 1 (the drug amendment). So much information, strength and encouragement to glean in this episode!
