In this episode, Jules explains how to improve the podcast experience for your guests. As well as preparing your guests in advance (listen to Episode 34) you can make the process as enjoyable as possible for your guests. Plus if your guests are happy, they may become clients.  Listen to what they're saying & engage fully in the conversation.  Book an hour long slot with your guest, even if you know your recording will last less time. This gives you the chance to continue the conversation after you've stopped recording (which is often when you'll get the best from them as they'll feel most relaxed). Follow up with your guest by thanking them for taking part, and sharing social media assets and/or a blog post with them. Also, let them know when the episode is live. This episode was inspired by a talk at The Podcast Show in London in May by Arielle Lisenblatt who was speaking to Toby Goodman so thanks to them for the idea.

In November of 1990, Toby Goodman—producer of the Kathy Sullivan Explores podcast and CEO of Podcast Network Solutions—received a gift from his father for his 10th birthday. It was a telescope: an item with a purpose and capacity for evoking awe that no other toy had. It was no surprise that telescopes filled the shelves of toy stores in London: a few months before receiving the gift, Toby explains, the Hubble Space Telescope had launched, captivating the wonder of people from all walks of life. On July 12, 2022, a new era in astronomy dawned. The first full-color images and spectroscopic data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope were released, capturing yet again the minds and imaginations of people the world over. In this episode, you'll learn about the history of space telescopes and what the images from the James Webb Space Telescope mean for humanity. We compare and contrast the physical attributes and functions of the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. You'll gain insight into the life and design expectancies of the space telescopes and how the Hubble has changed over the years. We also discuss the value of images from space telescopes and how they shape peoples' perspectives about humanity's place in the cosmos. “Those specks aren't stars. They're galaxies—thousands of them in this little piece of sky you've always thought was empty.” - Kathy Sullivan This week on Kathy Sullivan Explores: The contributions of Edwin Hubble to astronomy The Hubble Constant and how to figure out the distance of galaxies James Webb, his role at NASA, and the importance of honoring pioneers Comparing the physical attributes of the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope How the James Webb Space Telescope observes objects the naked eye can't see The challenges of building a spacecraft The threads of continuity between the Hubble and Webb space telescopes How the first images from Hubble captured the popular imagination How the James Webb Space Telescope sees farther into the universe and further back in time How scientists decide where to focus the space telescopes The reason I wrote Handprints on Hubble A brief history of space telescopes and the problem of looking at the cosmos from the earth The ‘Endless Frontier' report and how it shaped the American astronomical enterprise Nancy Grace Roman: NASA's first Chief Astronomer and Mother of Hubble How the Hubble Space Telescope has changed since its launch The distance of the Hubble and Webb space telescopes from the earth The life and design expectancies of the Hubble and Webb space telescopes How to see the Hubble Space Telescope from the earth How to use the Hubble Space Telescope as an amateur astronomer The Hubble Ultra-Deep Field The value of astronomy to human lives Resources Mentioned: You Should Do a Podcast about That Our Favorite Quotes: “[The] telescope…had a purpose about it. With it came a built-in excitement of seeing faraway places that provoked dreams about what it was like to be an explorer in outer space.” - Toby Goodman “NASA's job is to push back the frontiers of science and knowledge about the cosmos, the solar system, and our place in it.” - Kathy Sullivan Connect with Toby Goodman: Podcast Network Solutions Narrow Podcasting Podcast: Podcast Business Coach Book: Narrow Podcasting: Make Profitable Connections and Grow your Business, Without Paid Ads, Sponsors, or Thousands of Listeners Podcast Network Solutions on LinkedIn Podcast Network Solutions on Facebook Toby Goodman on Instagram Spaceship Not Required I'm Kathy Sullivan, the only person to have walked in space and gone to the deepest point in the ocean. It's been quite a journey since I launched the Kathy Sullivan Explores podcast, to say the least. From exploring the power of mythologyand leadership styles to delving into the commercial space industry and the advent of the new space age, I've certainly had a lot of fascinating conversations in my first year of podcasting—and what's a better way to celebrate my first podcasting anniversary than to reflect on the journey thus far? And who would be better to take you along this journey with me than the man that helped me launch and produce the show, Toby Goodman. Toby is my podcast producer and the CEO of Podcast Network Solutions, a full-service podcast production company. Toby is the author of Narrow Podcasting: Make Profitable Connections and Grow your Business, Without Paid Ads, Sponsors, or Thousands of Listeners. He is also the host of the Podcast Business Coach podcast and creator of The Profitable Pod Method. Toby joins me today to explore my first year in podcasting. We discuss how having routines and habits has helped me have deeper conversations with my podcast guests. We discuss what went wrong with the Hubble Space Telescope, and how it was fixed, and I share my thoughts on processing errors and failures. We explain what it's like to become a podcast host and interviewer and the importance of keeping your listeners in mind when recording new episodes. We also recall previous conversations about leadership on the podcast and underscore how a mindset for learning keeps us alive and human. “Every time we create a solo episode, we're trying to create a story that is obviously fun and entertaining but it also has meaning and it gives people pause for thought, and oftentimes, an action to take.” - Toby Goodman This week on Kathy Sullivan Explores: The real value of routines and habits The listeners I have in mind when I record episodes How setbacks and hurdles in life are part of the human existence Launching shuttles, airplanes, and podcasts and the reason I wrote Handprints on Hubble The power of creativity and invention and their roles in human life How curiosity and my childhood upbringing help me manage fear and risk Crisis management and dealing with surprises Processing different versions of tragedy and failure The Hubble Space Telescope's mirror flaw and how it was fixed Debriefing and the unwinding period that follows a podcast episode or a large project Conversations about compassionate and competitive styles of leadership Reflecting on my solo episodes and their improvement over time Resources Mentioned: Book: Handprints on Hubble: An Astronaut's Story of Invention by Kathy Sullivan Our Favorite Quotes: “Life isn't about topping it; it is about other things to learn, different things to create, new things to try, and new people to meet.” - Kathy Sullivan “The best essence of humanity and human life: the creative and inventive spark.” - Kathy Sullivan “Stay in the awareness that you're always learning—always growing. You'll stub a toe and stumble and that's okay: it shows you're alive and engaged.” - Kathy Sullivan Related Episodes: The Life of a Visionary with Charlie Bolden Part 1 The Birth of the New Space Age with Charlie Bolden Part 2 Getting Gold in Sports, Career, and Life with Katie Smith The Cooperative Model of Business with Omega CEO, Raynald Aeschlimann (Part 1) The Honor of Measuring Time with Omega CEO, Raynald Aeschlimann (Part 2) The Apollo 13 Mission with Gerry Griffin Life's Fabulous Lessons with Dayna Steele Diversity, Inclusion, and Politics with Yvette McGee Brown Who is the Science Guy with Bill Nye Weaving Myth with Morgan Smith The Joyous Wonder of the Ocean with Helen Scales Connect with Toby Goodman: Podcast Network Solutions Narrow Podcasting Podcast: Podcast Business Coach Book: Narrow Podcasting: Make Profitable Connections and Grow your Business, Without Paid Ads, Sponsors, or Thousands of Listeners Podcast Network Solutions on LinkedIn Podcast Network Solutions on Facebook Toby Goodman on Instagram  Spaceship Not Required  I'm Kathy Sullivan, the only person to have walked in space and gone to the deepest point in the ocean. Toby Goodman is a partner and CMO at Podcast Network Solutions, LLC a company offering production and network management for podcast networks and the individual podcaster. Based in London and working with a plethora of international clients, Toby is a certified Book Yourself Solid Coach assisting salespeople, sales managers, marketing executives, and senior commercial executives in service-based industries. He has also spent 20 years as a full-time professional musician for hire and for pleasure, specializing in the drums and using his musical ear for all things sound. These surprisingly transferable skills were the perfect match for his work in podcasting. Toby joins me today to discuss his unusual journey from international jobbing percussionist to international podcast coach and consultant. He reveals the moment the loss of a friend made him re-evaluate his career priorities and seek to strengthen his skills in marketing. We discuss his discovery of the Profit First book and how he turned the knowledge into practice, proving to his own surprise that the method really worked when his finances started to shine. Toby also confesses nerves about writing his first book and puts his commitment on the record to release it early next year. It’s all about being accountable. “The great irony of self-help is that you can’t do it alone” Toby Goodman quoting Chris Colbert “The biggest challenge for coaches who are genuinely decent people and good at what they do is that they need to be …aware of the Messiah complex and be aware of ‘overhelping’” – Toby Goodman “Ask yourself what are the good and better results than I could give this person if I helped them?” -Toby Goodman “You have to be able to fit your own mask first before you can save other people” – Toby Goodman “The amount of emotional energy that ‘bad fit’ clients take is untold” – Toby Goodman This week on Profit For Coaches: How Toby switched from booking gigs to booking podcast clients What it takes to consider yourself a coach Why you should ditch ‘bad fit’ client prospects What coaches should watch out for when advising clients How COVID 19 has revealed the spending habits we just don’t need The one thing Toby thinks you should do as a consultant today Why a solid book in the hand is a perfect gift Resources Mentioned: Book: Book Yourself Solid Book: Million Dollar Consulting Connect with Toby Goodman: Listen Better Marketing Website Podcast Network Solutions Website Toby Goodman on LinkedIn Toby Goodman on Instagram Connect with Jos Willard: Profit For Coaches Website Jos Willard on LinkedIn Jos Willard on Twitter Jos Willard on Instagram   The Four Must-Haves for a Profitable Coaching Practice I want to make sure that the time you invest here is profitable.
