This week's theme on the Retirement Quick Tips Podcast is: SECURE 2.0 Act & The BIG Changes You Need To Know Today, I'm talking about the significant changes to Roth accounts in SECURE 2.0 Act. It's probably my favorite set of provisions in the new Act, and it's important to take note of these so you don't miss the opportunity to get more of your retirement dollars into Roth accounts and enjoy the tax-free growth and future tax-free withdrawals that come along with it. Employers will be able to provide employees the option of receiving vested matching contributions to Roth accounts. Previously, matching in employer-sponsored plans were made on a pre-tax basis. [go through example of this] Now keep in mind that retirement plans and payroll providers will need to actually offer this as an option, which can take time, so it's likely not going to be a change you'll see right away. Another new opportunity if you are covered by a SIMPLE or a SEP IRA through your work is that you can now have a SIMPLE Roth account, as well as SEP Roth IRAs, for 2023 and beyond. Previously, SIMPLE and SEP plans could only include pre-tax, not Roth funds. However, if this applies to you, don't get too excited. Even though you can now create and contribute to Roth SIMPLE and SEP IRA accounts beginning January 1, 2023, as Jeff Levine, writing for Kitces.com points out: “it will likely take at least some time before employers, custodians, and the IRS are able to implement the procedures and policies necessary to actually effectuate such contributions.” When hearing of all of these positive changes to Roth accounts, you may be asking yourself, what's the catch? Why would Congress allow more access and flexibility with Roth accounts, which lowers their tax revenue down the road. Well, Congress is as short-sighted as the rest of us, and as that same article on Kitces.com points out: “the changes highlight Congress's continued march toward ‘Rothification', perhaps in an effort to grab tax revenue now in order to make Federal budget estimates look better (or at least less bad).” That's it for today. Deciding whether to delay filing for Social Security is a hefty decision. Waiting to collect Social Security until age 70 will increase your monthly benefit by 32%, but that doesn't mean much if you don't live long enough to reap the rewards of being patient. In today's retirement headlines segment, I'll share an article written by Jeffrey Levine from Kitces.com that discusses a workaround to the seemingly all-or-nothing decision of whether to collect Social Security benefits at full retirement age or to delay filing until age 70. If this decision has been weighing heavily on your mind, you won't want to miss this episode. Outline of This Episode [1:22] If you are a do it yourself investor you are your own financial advisor [5:30] Retroactive payments are granted as a lump sum payment [7:03] Use the nudge strategy [9:00] Drawbacks to the 6-month nudge strategy [12:48] Using QLACs and MYGAs to enhance a bucket strategy DIY investors need plenty of tools in their retirement planning toolbox Jeffrey Levine, the author of Getting Comfortable Delaying Social Security with Six Month Reversible Delays, has a way of explaining complex financial concepts by breaking them into understandable bites. You can follow him on Twitter @CPAPlanner if you are looking for another go-to financial resource. Although today's retirement headline was written for financial advisors, it contains valuable information for the do-it-yourself investor. As a DIY investor, you need to recognize that you are your own financial advisor. Kitces.com offers a wealth of information and is one of my favorite retirement planning resources. Nudging your Social Security claiming decision can lessen the worry of making the wrong choice The biggest question that you probably have about Social Security is how big will your benefit be? The answer hinges on two factors: your earnings history and when you choose to take your benefit. By the time you get ready to retire, there isn't anything you can do about your past earnings history, but you can control when you decide to collect your benefit. The longer you wait to collect, the larger your monthly check will be. Each year that you choose to wait your payment will increase by 8%. With lifespans continually increasing it can make a lot of sense to delay filing for Social Security. However, not everyone will live long enough to reap the rewards of delaying their monthly benefit. Many people see the decision to delay taking Social Security until age 70 as an all-or-nothing endeavor, but that is not the case. In fact, as Jeffrey Levine explains, this decision can actually be broken up into a series of 8 smaller decisions. By using the strategy of nudging the decision forward every 6 months, you can break this seemingly all or nothing choice into 8 separate, independent, reversible decisions which will lessen the fear of an all or nothing approach. Challenges to using the every 6-month nudging approach As with every financial strategy, there are drawbacks to using the nudge approach every 6 months. The most obvious is that if you happen to die during your wait, you won't be able to collect the benefits. The author makes an important side note for married couples to consider this drawback. Listen in to hear what it is. Another downfall is that retroactive applications can reduce your lifelong benefits. Something else to consider is that if you file retroactively, you will receive retroactive benefits in a lump sum which could lead to a spike in your marginal tax rate for the year. Breaking down the decision of when to claim your retirement benefits into many smaller, less drastic decisions can give peace of mind to the decision-maker especially when they understand that the decision is reversible. Voters and politicians alike have made addressing the expanding homeless population in Long Beach a top priority. Despite the city receiving $85 million in state and federal funding over the past two years, Long Beach has still seen a 62% increase in the homeless population since 2020.Even in the face of those bleak statistics, there are nonprofits trying to reduce homelessness and address the root cause on a daily basis. One nonprofit is the Long Beach Rescue Mission. The Christian organization provides food, shelter, education and more meant to guide people into long-term housing.Today we speak with its Chaplin and executive director, Jeff Levine, who talks about seeing homelessness as an issue of humanity, not just a problem to be solved. On this episode of The Word podcast, Levine discusses how childhood trauma increases the risk of homelessness and how he hopes to address that in the future.Levine stresses that being or becoming a Christian is not a requirement to receive help from the Long Beach Rescue Mission. If you or someone you know needs assistance, you can call the Rescue Mission at (562) 591-1292. Guest says that to do business in New York, you have to be able to "ride the waves - to absorb the ups and downs." Long-time colleague and friend, Jeff Levine, bullish on New York's future despite 9/11 and economic disruptions, reviews his early ventures in Williamsburg and West Chelsea (now Hudson Yards). Working with social service agencies, Levine builds senior housing, homeless facilities along with affordable and mixed income apartments.
“If you point me at a target, I'll get there'' says Jeff. That includes succeeding at his first job in the life sciences as CEO of the startup, Advanced Scanners. This is a very interesting interview about a revolutionary technology and a leader with a “different” yet meaningful career. Unlike most of us, until he took this role, Jeff had no experience in MedTech. The Advanced Scanners technology will prove itself as essential in neurosurgery. Do you know what “anatomic shift” is and the difference it means in neurosurgery? You will soon. Then, it will spread its wings into numerous other specialties that need its capabilities. This is a great business story and personal story that shares numerous lessons all of us can learn from. 18 months to launch! Now Go Win Your Week! There is a new bill moving through Congress right now that has bipartisan support and is fairly likely to pass in its current form. We can get a good sense of what the bill is intended to do by looking at the title page. The stated goal of the bill is to increase retirement savings, and to simplify and clarify retirement plan rules. Change #1 is that the bill enacts changes to required minimum distributions and does so according to a schedule that depends on how old you are now. This change will affect roughly 20% of IRA owners who don’t need their RMD’s to cover their lifestyle expenses and they will be able to push their RMD’s further into the future. Change #2 involves catch-up provisions for IRAs, and that includes Roth IRAs. This section of the bill indexes IRA catch-up contributions for inflation, which brings them up to par with other retirement investment accounts. Change #3 are age-sensitive changes to catch-up provisions for traditional retirement plans. This change only affects people who are currently between the ages of 62 and 64 and says that starting in 2023 your catch-up provisions for traditional plans go from $6500 to $10000. This provides a narrow window for people who are just on the threshold of retiring but need to make greater contributions. Change #4 requires all catch-up contributions to be made to Roth accounts. Roth IRA’s are so beneficial to people, especially in a rising tax rate environment, that many people believe that at some point they will be taken away, but the truth is that the government loves the Roth IRA. It provides the short-term infusions of cash that the government and politicians desperately need today rather than decades from now. Change #5 is that retirement plan employer contributions can be designated to Roth accounts. Is a rising tax rate environment, this is exactly what we want. With a 30-year time horizon, this will allow us to squeeze the most efficiency out of our retirement dollars. This will probably result in you having to pay taxes on the matched amount, but given the historically low tax rate environment that we are in that’s still a good deal. Change #6 are changes to the penalties for failure to take required minimum distributions. Instead of being penalized by 50% for failing to take your RMD by the required date, the penalty is reduced to 25%. The penalty becomes 10% if you correct that within three years. This sounds like an improvement but it may also mean the IRS is less likely to waive the penalty than they were previously. One of the biggest takeaways from these changes is that the government loves Roth IRAs. They love it because it gives them revenue immediately, during their tenure in office, and we love it because it allows us to take advantage of historically low tax rates before they go up for good. I’m thrilled to be back sharing the latest retirement headlines with you after my short holiday break. The biggest news on the retirement radar this week is that the 2nd Coronavirus stimulus package has passed. Together, we’ll take a look at the most relevant parts. Then I’ll answer the question: do you need a Roth IRA even if you make more than the income limits allow for? Let’s start preparing for tomorrow by learning today. Press play now. Outline of This Episode [1:22] What will the Coronavirus stimulus package bring for us? [7:19] Health expenses are now deductible after 7.5% AGI [9:07] Standard deduction + $600 if you are married filing jointly in 2021 [10:45] Unemployment benefits have been extended [13:09] Does Janet need a Roth IRA? Will you be cashing a $600 stimulus check? The 2nd Coronavirus stimulus package has recently been passed and rather than have you read this 5500 page piece of legislation, I’ll cover the highlights that most pertain to you. Jeff Levine, @CPAPlanner on Twitter was a great source to help me understand the most important information in this bill. Perhaps the biggest news out of the stimulus package is that new stimulus checks are heading our way. These checks aren’t structured exactly the same as the last ones. The checks are $600 for each person in your household if your income falls under a certain amount. Find out the income limitations by listening to the details here. If you subscribe to the Every Day is Saturday newsletter this week, we’ll have a link to a calculator that can help you calculate the amount you’ll receive. Health expenses are now deductible after 7.5% Another change brought about by the Coronavirus stimulus package is that healthcare expenses are deductible after 7.5% of your income. This number often bounces back and forth between 10% and 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). This means that your healthcare expenses must be 7.5% of your income to be deductible and even then it only counts for the amount that is over 7.5% of your income. Unemployment benefits have been extended If you found yourself unemployed, like many this year, there’s good news. The stimulus package added federal unemployment benefits for another 11 weeks. This means that $300 per week will be added to your state’s traditional unemployment benefit. These weren’t the only changes in the bill. You can learn more about how the latest Coronavirus stimulus bill could affect you by listening to this episode of Retirement Starts Today Radio. Do you really need a Roth IRA? Janet’s financial advisor told her that since she is over the income limitations to save in a Roth IRA that she doesn’t need to open one. However, Janet is a few years away from retiring and she is worried about retiring without one. In my opinion, everyone could use a Roth IRA eventually. If your current income doesn’t allow for it, you can always fund a Roth IRA with a Roth conversion. Listen in to hear how you can fund your Roth most effectively while filling up your tax bracket. Roy L Hales / Cortes Currents - There have been a number of new revelations about Jeff Levine and the proposed Bliss Landing wood waste landfill. Levine withdrew his proposal on December 15th and a Ministry of Environment spokesperson informed the quathet Regional District the same day. "People have threatened me, verbally abused me, threatened my family. It's not worth it, it's absolutely not worth it. And it's all because this person called it toxic waste — and it's not," he told CBC news. Levine added, “If you don't agree with the industrialization of an area, that's one thing to disagree with, but don't try to turn someone into [an] environmental monster that's going to dump hazardous waste on land and ocean and negatively affect people, because those are two different things.... I was guided by the Ministry of Environment by this process, and I followed the process.” Variations of Levine's story appeared in Cortes Currents, The Squamish Chief, and Powell River Peak. He claims to have already lost $400,000 through the venture. 1.25 Much of the opposition came through a Change.org petition called “Major Vancouver developer planning on dumping toxic waste into Desolation Sound.” The ‘developer' in question was not Levine, but rather a Vancouver based company which he hoped would use his services. Levine has repeatedly said he does not have a contract with Bosa Properties, the owners of the Squamish old site, and will also be seeking wood waste from sites throughout the Fraser Valley. The Squamish Chief reported that District of Squamish staff informed them that, “the District is not banning wood waste from being disposed of in town, but determined in 2017 that municipal land would no longer be leased for wood waste disposal, and that wood waste landfill on District property will be phased out by 2022. As a result, Levine created a company and offered up land that he bought in Desolation Sound as a dumping spot for local businesses seeking to get rid of their wood waste. He said he was hoping to attract the business of the SEAandSKY Bosa-Kingswood project on the Waterfront, which has been looking for a contractor to take the wood waste, as the area was previously the old Interfor mill site. However, Levine hadn't signed a deal with the company, as the province had yet to approve his project.” A spokesperson for Boas Properties confirmed that no contract has been signed. The report which Vancouver based Keystone Environmental prepared for Levine states, “The material to be landfilled will originate from several wood processing locations such as sawmills, dry land sorts and former sawmills where the saw dust, wood chips and bark was previously buried.” Image taken from the from WATERFRONT LANDING SUB AREA PLAN, Squamish Community plan (2017)

Roy L Hales / Cortes Currents - A numbered company called 1265209 B.C. Ltd. intends to a develop a wood waste landfill at Bliss Landing, just across from Cortes Island on the Malaspina Peninsula. According to their environmental protection application, filed by Strategic management Consultant Jeff Levine on November 17th, “The maximum rate of industrial wood waste residue discharged from this facility will be 375,000 m3 over a 15-month period. The operating period for this facility will be 8am to 5pm 5 days per week. The refuse discharged, will contain saw dust, wood chips, hog fuel, end cuts of wood less than 1 metre in length, dredging's of wood waste, sand, gravel, rocks, inert waste and inert cover material. All material will be non-hazardous and covered through intermediate cover material until the landfill is completed (15 months) and a final low-permeability cover will be put on top and soils and vegetation will be replanted.” The matter was brought before the quathet Regional District Board on December 8th. According to a report in the Powell River Peak, Powell River City director George Doubt calculated the project works out to moving 81 dump truck loads of wood waste, with a pup trailer, per day, five days a week over a 15 month period. To which qRD planner Julia Dykstra replied, “They are planning on barging it from the Squamish area to the actual location and they are not proposing any road use over the Sarah Point Road at all.” >>> Where the waste is coming from Some opponents of the project are concerned that “the waste materials are coming from a site in Squamish that is notorious for contamination from industrial activity, including a nearby mine.” The wood waste comes from an old Interfor sawmill site in Squamish, which was operational during the 1980s and 90's. Waterfront Landing is on the eastern shore of Mamquam Blind Cannel, across from downtown Squamish. The city plans to use this former industrial site for mixed density housing, a marina and a park. In their description of the proposed Waterfront Landing park, the city states, “previous industrial use has led to some site contamination.” According to a 2019 article in the Squamish Chief, Municipal environmental co-ordinator Caroline Ashekian informed the Squamish council that “the waste wouldn't contaminate the area but it could result in structural instability.” >>> Tla'amin approval On November 18th, Levine, notified the quathet Regional District that, “We have completed the required First Nation consultation and have received a letter of support for the project from the Tla'Amin Nation.” >>> People concerned about the project have until this Wednesday, December 16th, to send in their comments Email Mr. Jeff Levine - jeff@jlamc.ca 1265209 B.C. We hear what made Jeff decide to take his love of hot sauce and turn it into a family business, and how the name “Silk City” came to be. Jeff reveals how he comes up with his crazy hot sauce flavors, who he tests them on, and how he is hustling getting his name out there in an ultra-competitive field. From some of Jeff’s favorite comedians and to a flavor he thought was going to take off but it bombed. All this, plus the first ever hot sauce for ice cream. Real Estate REality Check | Real Estate & Business Career Success Education and Training
Introduction: Today it is my honor to have as our guest the founder and chairman of Douglaston Development, Levine Builders and Clinton Management - yes, my real estate brethren - the Brooklyn born and legendary ... and of course effervescent, Jeff Levine. A true renaissance man, Jeff is someone who not only has made a lasting imprint on the affordable, senior and market rate housing markets both here in New York as well as nationally, but also a man who strives for balance in life, given his commitment to family and the lasting impact he has made in the community. Playing off of a song title of The Rolling Stones, “Time Is [not] on My Side” to describe the seemingly countless awards that Jeff has received for making a difference, but with that said, it is my pleasure to introduce to you the Real Estate Board of New York’s 2016 recipient of the Kenneth R. Gerrety Humanitarian Award. Episode Notes: At 2:14, Jeff Levine discusses growing up in Brooklyn, and how, by replying to a 2-line classified ad in the New York Times, he truly “started from the bottom.” At 4:23, Jeff talks about adding value, as well as creating relationships with vendors, lenders and professionals that “make it right.” At 5:47, Levine suggests that one must have a high threshold for aggravation in development, and must survive his or her (and not repeat) past mistakes. At 7:28, he touches upon the process of development being a 3-legged stool. At 9:16, Jeff speaks about passion, commitment and the sense of accomplishment he feels in creating something. At 10:24, Levine believes that reputation is something that is well deserved. At 11:53, he dives into the companies that sit under The Douglaston Companies umbrella: Douglaston Development, Levine Builders, and Clinton Management, as well as the importance in hiring the right people and delegation. At 14:59, Levine shares a few thoughts about his youth growing up living in NYC housing projects, and his thoughts on affordable housing. At 16:38, he talks about Sam LeFrak and shares a story from his childhood. At 18:11, Jeff notes the critical components needed in residential buildings in order to seduce and attract tenants. At 20:43, Levine mentions his respect for, and for those who put in, a hard day’s work. At 22:27, Jeff touches upon making a difference in the public housing sector. At 23:56, he discusses NYCHA. At 25:53, Levine touches upon owning neighborhood retail centers which serve the community. At 27:39, he provides his thoughts on Amazon recently backing out of its planned LIC headquarters. At 29:24, Jeff imparts his love of NYC’s unparalleled charm and diversity in culture. At 31:06, Levine dishes on why Douglaston Development has not made any acquisitions in NYC over the past 5 years. At 33:11, Jeff touches upon the correlation between hard work and good luck. At 34:58, Jeff conveys his thoughts on the connection between success and passion. At 36:36, Jeff Levine closes out the podcast with a message on how he would like to be remembered.
Nine years ago, Barry Rabkin discovered a golfball sized lump on his throat while washing his face. The diagnosis was thyroid cancer and the treatment was invasive surgery and radiation. Upon the suggestion of his wife, he began juicing in an effort to help aid his recovery. Not only did Barry feel better and have more energy, but his blood work was showing signs of improvement with levels in the normal range. It was at this point he knew he had to help as many people as possible by sharing the power of juicing. However, Barry had no prior food industry experience and his juice recipes where solely focused on nutrition and not taste, a point his partner, Jeff Levine, quickly corrected by bringing his own expertise in the fast casual arena to eventually create Raw Juce. (Yup, there is no "i" in Juce) Today, Raw Juce has nine locations throughout South Florida and offers an array of juices, smoothies, and food such as acai bowls, quinoa salads, raw desserts and more. Barry is now healthy, motivated and excited to spread the benefits of juicing and eating a plant-based diet to the South Florida community and beyond. We hope you enjoy the conversation, Alex and Jeanette For behind the scenes photos, show notes and more visit www.plantedinmiami.com Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and Pinterest @plantedinmiami
