Tonight we return to form with a real meat-and-potatoes World War II movie. Hollywood player Samuel Fuller had written, directed or produced countless pulpy movies for decades. However, he decided to mine his own World War II experiences for "The Big Red One," which ended up being his greatest achievement. An old-fashioned, combat-heavy ensemble piece, TBRO features the ever-dependable Lee Marvin, and the fresh-off-dizzying-fame Mark Hamill as they trudge through the European theater (and Rommel's Africa)... Asides include a theory about "Saving Private Ryan," the use of the word 'retarded,' and the origin of the term 'five will get you ten,' and big butts. After a 2 year hiatus, Simon Jon and Mat are back with a deep dive into Terrorism, Racism and War with 3 film classics: Twilight's Last Gleaming, White Dog and The Big Red One....
Tom Brown served as an infantryman in Vietnam, where he faced frequent and ferocious firefights as a member of the Big Red One. About six months into his tour, his unit was ambushed near the Cambodian border and Tom was severely wounded by a grenade. He describes his journey from there in today's episode.

Come back in time with us and celebrate the movies that honor World War II. Dramas, comedies, and even sci-fi and horror, there is no end to the stories that can be told and lessons that can be learned from this historical, international conflict. For more than 80 years Hollywood has been making movies to tell the dramatic stories of World War II. As impressionable youth, Jay and Shua ate them up and still do. Let's look at some memorable ones. News Mark Hamill visits the White House Riddick will return in the 4th film in the franchise Cobra Kai 3 part event premiering July 18 Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua was pleasantly surprised to find that The Fall Guy is a well made, action extravaganza. Ryan Gosling continues his winning streak of fun movies and Emily Blunt shows yet another side of her talent. Shua recommends! Jay was on the edge of his Imperial-made seat while enjoying the series finale of The Bad Batch. Dave Filoni kept us guessing as to the fate of our heroes, and by the end Jay thought it was a satisfying conclusion. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay is pulling all the strings of the live action version of Thunderbirds (2004) with Bill Paxton. It may have not achieved the success and popularity of the bizarre 1960s marionette TV show, but it was a campy homage with some action and interesting interpretations. Check it out today! Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Movies! There have been countless tales of World War II over the years. These stories recount bravery, determination, and heroism in a way unlike any other period of human history. Growing up, Jay and Shua gravitated towards a few classics such as The Great Escape, The Big Red One, and The Dirty Dozen. Plus, believe it or not, there can sometimes be humor in tragedy. Comedies like Steven Spielberg's 1941, Mel Brooks's To Be or Not to Be, and The Zucker Brothers' Top Secret. There are always lessons to be learned and tragedy is often a great reminder to not repeat mistakes. So let's all remember that, shall we? Are you a fan of WWII movies? Which heroes are your favorite? First person that emails me with the subject line, “War is Hell” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. This week, we discuss two films from American director Samuel Fuller. The first is White Dog (1982), a drama/horror film based on Romain Gary's 1970 novel of the same name. The film depicts the struggle of a dog trainer named Keys (Paul Winfield), who is black, trying to retrain a stray dog found by a young actress (Kristy McNichol), that is a "white dog"—a dog trained to make vicious attacks upon, and to kill, any black person. The second is The Big Red One (1980), an epic war film starring Lee Marvin alongside an ensemble supporting cast, including Mark Hamill. Based on Fuller's own experiences as a soldier in World War II, it was produced independently on a low budget, and shot on location in Israel as a cost-saving measure. Dragnet, the brainchild of Jack Webb, may very well be the most well-remembered, and the best, radio police drama series. From September, 1949 through February 1957, Dragnet's 30 minute shows, broadcast on NBC, brought to radio true police stories in a low-key, documentary style. Dragnet was perhaps the most famous and influential police procedural drama in American media history. The series gave millions of Americans a feel for the boredom and drudgery, as well as the danger and heroism, of real life police work. Dragnet earned praise for improving the public opinion of police officers. Try the new "Tales of Escape & Suspense"- links below! Hammy and Clint try to right a wrong (sorry Caitlin) and review a game that was covered all the way back in season 1 in Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. Originally, Hammy was not able to join and Caitlin (aka Treet) had to last minute fill in for a game she played only mere hours prior to recording. Apparently it was a decent fill in because that episode would go one to be out most downloaded single episode in H&S history thanks to the machine that is Call of Duty.....and we've never hear the end of it since. COD! Those three letters have become a phenomenon in the almost two decades since the original Call of Duty was released. What started as a World War II PC only game eventually found its way to basically every console (except the Switch!) and has become the third best selling video game franchise of all time. Mike & Neil take a deep dive into the two GameCube games we got from Activision in this series: Call of Duty Finest Hour, a remade port of the original game, and Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, what many people thought was an expansion pack or side entry to the wildly successful COD2 but actually was a fantastic one player experience akin to the acclaimed Medal of Honor games of the day. Friend of the show Spenny joins us to recount how his history buff father loved playing this game, sometimes even on a stationary bike. The boys also cover one more game, Dead to Rights, a neo-noir shooter than didn't see to fit anywhere else except with it's COD cousins. Keep fighting the good fight soldier.

This week, we have three blasts from the past, one of those is even about a blast from even farther back than it was, and one thing from the future... or actually now but it's about the future. However, remarkably, none of the stuff this week is actually about time travel - although, with the world in its current state, who wants to be in the now anyway? www.cinemasavants.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Think there's only one way to break in? You won't after watching this interview with Aaron Ginsburg! He could win a prize for the most outrageous way of breaking in. Aaron Ginsburg (now on The CW's THE 100) is a writer/producer who has worked in television, film and video games for over a decade. Along with his longtime writing partner, Wade McIntyre, he was recently a Co-Producer on NBC's DO NO HARM, he wrote the next installment in the popular family comedy HOME ALONE franchise (HOME ALONE: THE HOLIDAY HEIST), and he is currently co-writing a new comic for SKYBOUND (The Walking Dead) entitled CLONE. Ginsburg & McIntyre have also written for FOX's quirky comedies THE FINDER and THE GOOD GUYS, and Ginsburg spent three months in Bogotá, Colombia producing USA Network's BURN NOTICE prequel feature, THE FALL OF SAM AXE. Their comedy short, A NINJA PAID HALF MY RENT, was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival several years ago and where it went on to be featured at dozens of other festivals (including HBO Aspen Comedy Arts Festival, SXSW and the LA Film Festival). Ginsburg & McIntyre sold the 1/2 hour single-camera comedy CROWDED APARTMENT to SPIKE TV, and wrote the dark indie thriller INSIGHT (starring Justified's Natalie Zea, Chuck's Adam Baldwin, and Christopher Lloyd) which was released in over 40 theaters and is currently streaming on Netflix. In the gaming world, Ginsburg & McIntyre wrote the script for Activsion's mega-hit videogame, CALL OF DUTY 2: BIG RED ONE which won the prestigious award for Outstanding Achievement in Story and Character Development from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. For the past 7+ years, Ginsburg has directed LA's hit stage show, THE THRILLING ADVENTURE HOUR at Largo at the Coronet. Troy Bowyer was Born and raised in Missouri. His father and uncles all served in the military. Troy's Cousins, brother and mother served as well. Troy joined the Army in 2005 where he Completed OSUT at Fort Knox. Troy trained and became a 63A, which is an M1A1 Abrams Tank Systems Maintainer, however, the tank mechanics worked on EVERYTHING. Tank Mechanics are a bit different because not just anyone could work on a turbine engine. During Troy's time in the military, all the other careers knew the Tank Mechanics were the best. Troy also served as an M88 operator, A heavy equipment recovery vehicle. The beast of all beasts. Troy's First duty station was Camp Casey, Korea. E Co 2/9 Infantry. Second To None! While serving there, Troy suffered an injury where he Herniated his L-4, L-5 disk completing the Manchu Mile. That is a 28 mile ruck march with a 60 pack. It is conducted every year in remembrance of an 85-mile forced march undertaken by soldiers from the 9th Infantry Regiment during the Chinese "Boxer Rebellion" in 1900. This Ruck March represented something powerful and it was a pretty extreme challenge for Troy to be a part of. Troy left S. Korea in June of 2007. He then Took that 30 days of PCS leave and went to Ft. Riley, Kansas. Troy Deployed on back to back tours in Iraq with the Big Red One where he was part of a unit being stood up. At that time, we were the Old Ironsides. Troy made it through some miserable times with some good people from that unit where he pushed through a lot of physical pain to do those deployments. Troy is now a 10 year Medically Retired SGT, part-time gunsmith with three crazy boys, a lovely wife, a rescued dog, and an evil cat, Lilith. She protects the house because the dog is too busy sleeping. Fortunately, the folks Troy work with and for, now, they are good people and understand his situation. Troy's workload and man hours are completely up to him. Troy also tries to volunteer to help my fellow Veterans when he can. Throughout the last 10 years Troy has had four back surgeries to include a double spinal cord stimulator. Troy has had One surgery a year over the last 7-8 years, which come at a substantial price to his mind and body. Troy tries to maintain a positive outlook because he knows “it could always be worse”.
On this episode of the show Phillip is joined again by Brandt and they talk about the movies Dunkirk (2017), Enemy at the Gates (2001), and The Big Red One (1980). Phillip starts the show by making some corrections from this and previous shows. Then he talks about what he has been watching at home and the theaters. Then he gets into the prerecorded show. Phillip and Brandt start by talking about; Paris, Texas, Zorro the Gay Blade, The Legend of the Lone Ranger, Love at First Bite, The Pirate Movie, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Superfuzz, and Lone Wolf McQuade. Then Phillip talks about the Zorro the Gay Blade and Stripes soundtrack. They then talk about Dunkirk, their love of 1941, Kubrick and Nolan being the same kind of film makers (maybe), Phillip reminds Brandt about the documentary on Netflix called The Filmworker, they then discuss their favorite Christopher Nolan scenes. Then talk about Inception, Shudder Island, and The Sixth Sense. They talk about what a great actor and director Kenneth Branagh is (Dead Again, Murder on the Orient Express, Hamlet, and Henry V). Brandt talks about WWII propaganda and they both agree on Kingdom of Heaven the Director's Cut being a great film. Then they dive into The Big Red One. Brandt talks about how much better the Reconstruction version is. Phillip talks about how great the director's cuts of Aliens and Alien 3 are. Phillip and Brandt talk about the reality of war and the realism of the movie. Then they discuss Sam Fuller's other work. They talk about a documentary on Sam Fuller that they both saw that made them dive deep into Sam Fuller. The documentary was called Sam Fuller, The Typewriter, the Rife, and the movie camera. (It's on Youtube.) Then Phillip talks about Sam Fuller's I Shot Jesse James, which leads Brandt into talking about The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Phillip then talks about 2 more Sam Fuller movies; Pick Up On South Street and Fixed Bayonets. It's a long show, but it is full of movie talk. write us an email at mycelluloidheart@gmail.com Hope you enjoy.
