Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Would you like access to our advanced agency training for FREE? https://www.agencymastery360.com/training Are you leveraging the power of podcasting to grow your agency? Whether through guest appearances on industry shows or hosting your own podcast, this medium offers unique opportunities to showcase expertise and connect with potential clients. However, while appearing on established podcasts can help spread your message, creating your own show ultimately provides greater control over brand messaging and client conversion. For marketing agencies, podcasting has become an essential marketing tool that can drive significant conversions. Today's featured guest, a podcast expert, specializes in helping clients navigate the complex balance between audience value and revenue generation. She tackles crucial questions many business owners face in their podcasting journey: optimal timing for monetization, strategies for brand partnerships, and most importantly, maintaining focus on audience benefit. Her insights reveal how to build a podcast that not only generates revenue but also provides lasting value to listeners. Traci DeForge is the founder and CEO of Produce Your Podcast, an award-winning podcast and marketing agency that is well-known for helping clients leverage their podcasts for revenue growth. She discusses the significant role podcasts play in driving revenue for business owners and consultants and shares her insights on best practices for pitching to get on podcasts, tips for being an effective podcast guest, and why the best call to action is leading people back to your own podcast. In this episode, we'll discuss: The easiest way to be a great podcast guest. The importance of storytelling to capture your podcast audience. AI-generated podcast content and it's limitations. How to re-energize a stale podcast. Don't Be That Guest: Listen First, Pitch Later As a professional who helps clients maximize their podcast opportunities, Traci emphasizes that while podcasts can be powerful platforms for business owners to share expertise and promote their ventures, success requires a strategic approach. The most critical step before pitching yourself as a guest, she insists, is to actually listen to the show you're targeting. Nothing frustrates podcast hosts more than receiving pitches from people who clearly haven't invested time in understanding their show or audience. A potential guest can immediately stand out simply by demonstrating familiarity with the podcast's format, tone, listener base in their outreach, and more importantly, what value they can bring to that audience. Each show has its unique style and requirements, making a one-size-fits-all approach ineffective. The rise of AI-generated mass outreach has only heightened the importance of personalization. Many people send automated messages with text easily identified as something drafted by AI to be sent to maybe hundreds of people. A personalized approach reflects genuine interest and sets you apart from the countless generic pitches that inundate podcast hosts daily while also establishing rapport. This initial investment of time and effort significantly increases your chances of securing a guest spot and creating valuable content for the show's audience. Tips to Prepare to Be a Great Podcast Guest Once you get in and are set to be a podcast guest, there are ways you can ensure you'll be a great guest who provides great value to the show while making sure you also drive business. First, you want to be prepared for how a host usually runs their show. Ideally, Traci recommends you listen to a few episodes so you'll be familiar with the most important questions they ask and be prepared to answer in a thoughtful way. At the same time, you want to make sure you can come across to the audience as someone who is sharing relevant information about yourself and your business without it becoming an entire infomercial about your business. In this regard, Traci also mentions the importance of having a good call to action. Don't list fifteen different ways people can get in touch with you, but rather one specific request that enables you to continue the conversation with your audience after they've consumed the podcast. Ideally, send people to listen to your own podcast, since there's no better way to grow a show than appearing as a guest on other shows and being exposed to an audience who's already consuming podcast content similar to what you share. Using Storytelling to Captivate Your Podcast Audience As a podcast guest, another good way to get the audience interested in what you do is to sprinkle some relevant stories throughout the conversation in a way that's not staged or phony. People like to hear stories, and if they're success stories this steps up a way for you to connect with someone's pain points or aspirations. This is something that will also greatly help you as a podcast host. At its core, podcasting is about storytelling. Listeners are drawn to narratives that evoke emotions, inspire, and offer relatable experiences. The ability to weave personal stories into discussions creates a sense of intimacy and relatability. Even if you don't consider yourself a natural storyteller, the key is to identify a few authentic stories that you feel comfortable sharing. This approach fosters a genuine connection with listeners who may be grappling with similar pain points or aspirations. When a host shares a success story, it not only provides hope but also establishes credibility, allowing listeners to envision themselves achieving similar outcomes. Why AI-Generated Content Can't Replace Authentic Podcasting Nowadays with AI it's possible for someone to just save a couple of interesting articles about a certain topic, have an AI read it while replicating their voice and tone, and then post it as a podcast episodes after adding their intro and outro music. That's how far the technology has come. However, Traci warns that although these tactics to get episodes out quickly with the least amount of effort can get you into the top of the funnel it'll never replace the trust you build by having an authentic conversation with a guest. Listeners crave authenticity, and the fear remains that reliance on AI-generated content could lead to a robotic and impersonal experience. The podcasting community thrives on the unique perspectives and experiences that individuals bring, and it is this authenticity that sets successful podcasts apart. The ability to engage in sincere conversations about your expertise and passion creates an environment where listeners can truly understand what it would be like to work with you. Unlike written blog posts or advertisements, a podcast allows for a more nuanced and dynamic exchange of ideas. The natural energy of a host's voice, along with their unique inflections and pauses, conveys emotions that text alone cannot replicate. This authenticity becomes a powerful vehicle for connection, enabling listeners to feel as if they are part of a shared journey. How to Reenergize Your Podcast As more creators enter the space, the challenge of standing out and reaching new audiences has intensified. The podcasting world is no longer just about producing quality content; it's equally about ensuring that content is accessible and easily found by potential listeners. This is why if you feel your show is in need of a boost Traci recommends digging into the discoverability, which refers to how easily listeners can find your podcast. As a creator, you must consider how your content appears in search results and how it can be promoted across various platforms. The key elements which affects your podcast's appearance to new listeners goes from simple elements like its name and accompanying description, to how you're utilizing podcast platforms. One of the first steps in enhancing discoverability is conducting a thorough podcast audit. A well-rounded audit should spend a significant amount of time analyzing the state of the podcast, including its format, production value, and how potential listeners are searching for content similar to what the podcast offers. This perspective shift can illuminate gaps in the podcast's visibility and provide a roadmap for improvement. Once you've optimized your content, you could turn to surveying your audience to ensure the content you're putting out is the content they're interested in listening to. You can also look at the way you're putting out that content, paying attention to aspects like whether you should prioritize short-form content over long-form content and what are you doing on each side to convert listeners to the other. Can Small Creators Monetize Their Show? The short answer is, yes. The question of when to monetize a podcast often creates anxiety among creators, particularly those with smaller audiences. However, Traci challenges the common assumption that successful monetization requires massive download numbers. Instead, she emphasizes the importance of strategic planning from the outset – understanding your content direction and identifying potential brand partnerships that align with your message. The power of podcasting as a marketing tool is backed by compelling data: 73% of podcast listeners take action based on their favorite hosts' recommendations. This remarkable statistic highlights both the significant influence podcasters wield and their responsibility to their audience. Understanding this impact should guide creators to prioritize meaningful, high-quality content while strategically integrating promotional elements in ways that feel natural and valuable to listeners. Traci's experience has shown that successful monetization is possible even for podcasts with seemingly limiting factors, such as niche subjects or geographic restrictions. She's witnessed effective pre-launch monetization strategies and profitable small podcasts, proving that audience size isn't the only path to success. The key lies in developing a comprehensive strategy that addresses both audience growth and monetization opportunities. In her view, the only real limitations are those imposed by outdated thinking about what makes a podcast commercially viable. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset? “It's got to look good, sound good, look good if it is video, but it's got to sound good, good quality audio, good editing, and it's got to have enough interesting information that people want to talk about what they heard or they have a pivotal moment or an a-ha or it changes their life. So, and that again is why I am so incredibly passionate about podcasting and just, in general, because, I don't know if I've ever shared this with you, but listening to a podcast literally did change my life with a medical condition that I had.” – Traci DeForge This episode is the second half of my conversation with founder and CEO of Produce Your Podcast and internationally recognized podcast expert Traci DeForge as we discuss the branding power of podcasts, Traci's tips for utilizing social media, and her work with the Podcast Professionals Association. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit audiobrandingpodcast.com where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available and what the newest audio chats will be about. If you're getting some value from listening, the best ways to show your support are to share this podcast with a friend and leave an honest review. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. (0:00:01) - Leveraging Podcasts for Brand GrowthThe second half of our conversation starts with Traci's explanation of how building a brand's audio strategy differs from sustaining one, and the challenge of reaching out to an audience without sounding like a sales pitch. “[If] you can think about what's in it for the audience, then all of the visibility, leads, and sales component happens as a residual of that,” she says about podcasts. “But the most important key is... that it's got to look good and sound good.” We discuss how podcasts help forge a lasting connection with listeners, and how one podcast helped her overcome a lifetime of migraines. “I really, really share that story,” she tells us, “because it's not just me going. You can change the world one voice at a time. Like that person's voice changed my literal life and my family's life.”(0:07:07) - Exploring the Power of PodcastingOur discussion focuses on the growing importance of video in podcasting and whether it's possible to still succeed as an audio-only production, “If you are currently thinking about being an audio-only podcaster or you are thinking about starting an audio podcast,” Traci says, “absolutely yes, yes, yes, you do need to start the audio podcast or keep the audio podcast.” She explains how much social media algorithms have evolved just over the last year, and her advice for building an audience. “Use the video for shorts,” she suggests. “Use it for shorter segments, use it for social media clips. Use it for that, because if you're not doing that, that is what's going to leave you behind.”(0:15:43) – The Power of Sound in PodcastingAs we wrap up our conversation, Traci tells us more about how she co-founded the Podcast Professionals Association and the role it plays in helping podcasters network and strategize in a quickly changing market. “We have two virtual events a month,” she explains, “where people can connect and have conversations about how they price their business challenges in the industry. How are you facing AI? What happens if you lose a big client? How are you changing your prices?” We also talk about what sets the power of sound apart, including the unique...

“I really believe in developing the power of an audio brand as the Nike swoosh, as the Amazon arrow smile. Your audio brand should be as recognizable to your personal brand, to your business brand, however you're leveraging your audio platform. It should be as good a quality, and people should invest in, and not have it be an afterthought. If you think about what people invest in personal branding and visual branding aesthetics, website branding and then, oh, ‘I want to start a podcast.' And they never even consider that that's an extension of all of that other investment that you've made.” – Traci DeForge This episode's guest is the founder of Produce Your Podcast, an award-winning full-service production and marketing agency, and is recognized as an international podcast expert, sought-after speaker, and media contributor. She's the creator of the Podcast Management Academy, the industry's only certified podcast manager training program, and co-founder of the Podcast Professionals Association. She's also the co-host of the Ask Brien radio show on KHTS AM & FM in Los Angeles and has been featured on all three major networks along with CNN, CTV, American Express OPEN, and Radio INK, and is a member of the Rolling Stone Culture Council. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. (0:00:01) – The Love of AudioWe start things off with a look back at Traci's childhood memories of sound, from calling Dial-a-Prayer to hear stories over the phone to listening to to the radio under the covers at night. “I used to sleep with an AM transmitter radio under my pillow listening to ghost stories,” she recalls, “and when my friends would come over for slumber parties. I would create these elaborate radio shows.” She tells us about how developing her first podcast in 2015 helped inspire her to create Produce Your Podcast. “There are going to be some other busy consultants and business owners,” she explains, “who are going to want to have podcasts, but they're not going to want to do everything it takes to have it be a broadcast that represents the quality of their brand. And so that's when Produce Your Podcast was born.”(0:11:01) - The Power of Audio BrandingOur conversation turns to the differences between audio and video productions, and why just ripping the audio from a video production might not cut it in podcasting.“If you don't really understand the true power of audio and audio branding,” Traci notes, “then you could get lost in thinking that ‘I'm just going to do a video podcast or video recording,' or even a video webinar to a degree, ‘and I'm just going to grab the audio off of that.'” We discuss how the audio production works to bring the imagery to life for listeners, and how a podcast lacking that connection can leave its listeners cold. “That can be the point where an audience could fracture from you,” she adds, “because they don't feel connected to the conversation. So they may stay through that conversation

As longtime director of two top-fifty trade shows in the country (and many events and services beyond), Kenji's experience has afforded him a truly independent viewpoint to best understand the ebbs and flows of business trends, successes, failures and the tools that can be applied these days to make a difference. Facebook Twitter Instagram Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Sign up for my Newsletter HERE I'd love to hear your feedback about the show! You can contact me here: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com Brought to you this week by Alabama Beaches Show Notes 04:27 The pivot from outdoor retail (A16) to trade shows. I don't quite remember how that happened. I had been managing stores, a store manager for Adventure 16 in L. A. and then in the Valley store, and was back in the L. A. store managing there. And then got a call from Larry Harrison, who was. Put on task by the outdoor retailer team to go find their next account exec. There was a long-time account executive who was leaving, and they're looking to fill that spot. And I said, like, well, what's an account executive? It's not something that I was familiar with and sounded pretty fancy, but you know, long story short, I interviewed down in Laguna Beach with the team. And then, back then, it was called Miller Freeman, who was the owner of the outdoor retailer shows. And I got hired there as a salesperson having zero experience selling space or advertising, and starting in, in earnest, my career in the media slash shows business. 08:00 The Big Gear Show Big Gear rose up out of what was the paddle sports retailer show. So that was a show launched by a couple of guys from the paddle sports industry who became sort of unhappy with the timing of outdoor retailer. Paddle sports was a big part of the outdoor retailer show, and they passed. They took their boat, went off, and started their own show. Out of that came the desire to be more inclusive categorically. So, instead of just paddle sports, why don't we bring in hike, running, camping, and biking and create a more comprehensive and inclusive platform? And so that's where the Big Gear Show came from. It launched in 2020. 14:29 Outdoor Biz Evolution Those trade shows were all a bunch of guides, and, you know, we were young kids who worked at the retail shop floors and stuff. It was not as sophisticated then as it is now today. You're right. That evolution is big. And I think, you know, the infusion of capital market representatives, you know, I, it was very different. You're right. You know, during my time, for example, at the show's helm was during the time when financial investors started showing up in numbers dozens and then like hundreds of people were coming, and we even created an event for them called what's that called, Fund Source? And it was specifically designed for new brands to pitch to investment community people and get valuable feedback and maybe even score an investor, you know, in the, in the sort of mode of Shark Tank. Right. But it was, I think Camber Outdoors is helping to sponsor it. 17:10 Do you have any thoughts on how that shakes out, consolidates, and continues to expand? I shy away from the word trade show anymore because it's kind of a loaded term. It kind of almost by default says the old. Way or the old show model that were the outdoor industry anyway, has become passé. And I think that whatever we're going to call the new show model you know, at big gear, we call it B2B2C or just simply like an inclusive platform that makes less of a deal of your categorical status. You know, interestingly, you know, I, I have a, well, I don't have my badge on right now, but I came in the show and they had sort of parsed the show entry timing by what kind of badge you had. So it was like, you get an eight, if you have this badge, get an 11, if you have this badge and you're not allowed in, if you don't have this badge. So I think that determination of who occupies what is really difficult now because. You know, who is a retailer anymore? Who is a guide outfit or influence or media, et cetera. Um, even supplier brands have, have brand, like they have products with their brand name on it, you know, Gore, for example. So it's it's a fuzzier world when you make those determinations. So creating a more inclusive show experience is I think part of the, the future equation that'll make sense and will help to, you know, In concert with several other things that need to happen. 31:48 What, what do you think are a couple of the biggest, we talked about this before we hit the record button, about the state of the outdoor industry today. What do you think are a couple of the biggest challenges facing the outdoor industry today? I think there's a lot of challenges. I think losing our neighborhood shops, you know, in the cities, primarily, I think shops and touch points at the trailhead and near put in and at the destinations. That's still relatively strong across the country. What I see is that the urban shops are really getting crushed. Like they are, their costs are going up. Their inventory and open to buy situations are super stressed and they're just finding it hard to keep going. It's also a time of changeover. Like a lot of the shops like a 16 that were founded, you know, in the 60s and 70s. Those. Company owners are either looking to sell or turn over the younger generation may or may not be interested in running retail stores. And so they're finding this, this time of change over is very active. And that's true in other, you know, related sectors like fly fishing and surf and others, but I think that's part of the challenge right now. We're still working through the inventory glut that happened from the disruption of the of the pandemic. So get 1st. Sold, people sold everything they had and then they had nothing to sell. And then the product was getting delayed because factories were closed and then the shipping lanes were delayed because they couldn't have enough dock workers to even unload the ships. And so that just created this big lag time in the industry that we're still working through like that created this over inventory situation that we're still in right now. 37:40 How has sustainability been reflected at the Big Gear Show? What are some of the initiatives you guys have? Well, I think on the brands and the product side, you could definitely feel it. A lot of. A presence and interest in that re commerce story. For us as a show producer, you know, shows are horribly wasteful historically. So trying to minimize the flow of that you know, because we have such a small team, I was managing a lot of that myself. What was happening over on the outside festival side, we really wanted to participate in, but we weren't able to do it this year. But they had a composting aspect too. So they really activated a zero waste program that did a pretty good job, but it's pretty expensive because you've got to have people. Staff that are there saying, Oh, wait, that's not a composting thing. You got to put that over here. And this is, it's sort of pre sorting. So they had staff at each of these 10 stations or however many there were. And so that's expensive because you just got to pay people for all the time that they're there, but very very impressive commitment from outside and their partners on, on the festival side of things, we want to implement. And so we've been paying close attention to. Like the flow of trash, you know, trashable things coming in. We had a space that we dedicated just for cardboard that could be reused storing it so that it was kept dry and viable. And then, you know, the companies that needed them at the end of the show, we had it for them. So just reusing and being smarter about You know, everything from badge holders, which we didn't have, you know, no badge holders just printed on enough, you know, quality paper that it's going to stay in place and have a, have a badge holder design that is effective. And we only had that for the B2B day. You didn't need badges or anything to come in with, we had digital waivers, so again, you know, just not piles of paper that you have to keep for years, we used a digital service for that. So. You know, little by little getting smarter as a event producer and bringing those bringing those solutions to bear at the show. 38:37 What are a couple of the brands or products you think are leading the way in sustainability? I guess the small brand Stream2Sea they're called they're making a product that doesn't like it's a sunscreen product Skin care product I guess you'd say but even the packaging on it is thoughtfully designed so that it's biodegradable, you know over time not in your backpack, of course, but and they have a system for being able to return that, you know empty or recycle it So just you know little thoughtful things like that. I think some of the different stove options, you know, I think one of the big stories coming out of the stove and cooking side is. Single use propane, you know, those green ubiquitous one pound propane bottles. And then we had a pellet stove coming from Timber Stoves. There was quite a bit, actually, especially in one of the highlights of the show was the Founders Market, which was produced by Path Ahead Ventures, REI's program for lifting up. BIPOC and women-founded organizations. Cool. And a lot of those companies are really really carefully curated to bring like really thoughtful, more sustainable solutions to the market, as well as, you know, better solutions for groups that historically haven't been addressed, whether that's different body shapes or just, you know, disabled folks. But that, you know, that's different than sustainability in a way. It is sustainability, but it's the same. Yeah. Way It's the same. 42:28 With all the talk lately of PFAS and things you know, we're discovering that are maybe worse off than we thought. How do you think, or do you think we can do more or maybe. Do some of it faster because it seems like maybe just, you know, guys like us, we're running out of time, but I think about my niece and nephew in the world, we're going to leave them and, you know, some of these things we've got to implement these programs like last week, and it seems like it takes a lot of energy and thought and conversation and things to get everybody's head around it to implement any thoughts on that. Yeah, I'm pretty active in California with the California Direct Creation Partnership that I helped found back in twenty-eighteen in addressing these aspects because you know, the way that the legislation first came out was basically saying that at retail, there can't be p fast in any of the products you sell after January first twenty-five or whatever the date was, and this is like, hey. Hold on a second. We, as the industry, believe in eliminating PFAS, just like we believe in eliminating BPA, just like we believe in using post-consumer recycled ingredients, and just like we believe in circular economy solutions. However, starting with the retail side starts with the horse's tail instead of the front. Like you've got to start at the supply chain side. Get them to stop using it, and then you can regulate. If that's a word regulation-wise, you can, you know, move down the chain. So you start at the fiber manufacturer, then you go to the fabric manufacturer, then you go to the. Apparel manufacturer, then you go to the wholesaler, then you go to the retailer and then you go to the, you know, the consumer and give them a way to get rid of that stuff or to cycle it in a way that doesn't end up with just plastic in the ocean or in the landfill. So I think more plastic in the ocean or the landfill. This is the reason why business. And government partnerships, you know, are the really so important to how we move forward, whether it is keeping PFAS out of our bodies and out of our ecosystems or doing a better job of working with tribes and taking that native knowledge and that stewardship mindedness. Of, you know, thousands of years of indigenous presence and and honoring that all of these things mean disrupting the current flow. And that's hard. You know, if a river is flowing super fast, it's pretty hard to get it to move in a different direction. And that's what we're trying to do. We're changing the culture. We're changing the entire culture of an industry, like changing our own personal culture. It's hard enough doing it for your family or your community is. Super hard and takes longer doing it for an entire industry that has all these moving parts across the country and across the globe like that's, that's going to take years. So I think part of this is just learning to keep I had a coach when I paddled out rigor and he had this phrase, you know, we would use because outrigger races are sometimes. Really long like 20 miles 30 miles. Yeah, and it's just smooth power, like keep the pressure on keep applying the pressure. Don't burn yourself out because you've got an hour and a half more to keep paddling. Don't run out. Don't burn yourself out, but smooth power, you know, and you'll keep keep the rhythm. Keep the power going. That's what we need. We need rhythm and we need, we need gentle applied power. That's. Consistent. Kind of like you and your podcast. 47:02 Where do you see the Big Gear Show in the next three to five years, say? What's that evolution look like? I think we have to keep adapting and building this new model. And I think that the future of it is going to be more more events. Kind of surrounding the main event. So I guess I think of it as like a constellation of stars or something like we've created the critical mass in the center, and now we're just, you know, you, you mentioned ATT elevate. Like I know Shannon's thinking about maybe that belongs in orbit with. The outside festival and the CEO summit idea. And I participated in an Asian outdoor leaders group meeting. They know little things that start to build around the core. People bring their sales meetings to town. That's always happened back at the old show, right? Those are the things that create. The critical mass and get people to say, you know what, I really need to be there. And the more you do that across more sectors, across more job functions and you know, the workforce part of the industry, the more that'll bring the industry to bear. And create that critical mass. So I think that's the future is continuing to work partnerships. I think partnerships are what fuel that that type of you know, critical mass building. 52:52 What is your favorite piece of outdoor gear under a hundred dollars? I think last time I, I said headlamps and I still think headlamps are amazing. 56:58 Is there a memorable outdoor adventure or experience that has influenced your work side of the world? Yeah, absolutely. One of my bigger adventures was skiing the high route across the Sierra from Independence to Fresno, basically. Yeah. And I, in that experience because I was with Jeff Cooper, Dan Dalbera, and Suniva Sorby, it was great; it was pretty well documented. So I have images from that, and I can tell the story. It's a story that's relevant to people who want to ski the high route, but it's also relevant to a number of different objectives or just, um, inspiration for businesses who are facing challenges as a team or challenges as a marketplace. And it's even helpful for for our journalists and people like I, I, I use that story was included in Jeannette Stawski's recent book, The Outdoor Leader recent book called The Outdoor Leader. So I have an excerpt in there from this trip that I did, you know, and that, that I learned so much about not just, you know, how to backcountry ski a multi day like big, big objective. Yeah. Kind of thing, but also about leadership, about following, you know, when the right time is to be following and leading when the, when you're needed to be leading, and that is, It reminds me of kind of this uh, the dynamic in leadership. Like you don't always have to be the big, bad boss. You know, there's times to hand over the boss reins to your up and coming leader or identifying who is, who are your up and coming leaders and investing in them. And then when the time comes, they have the skills and they have the ability to go out and go for it and take up, take the reins. And I learned a lot about that during this trip where I was not the trip leader. But I had to become the leader for, for at least a while away. 59:44 Do you have any advice for anyone looking to break into the outdoor industry? My standard answer is for people who have, you know, been asking me this question for decades, I say, well, best way started retail, learn the retail ropes, go with the front lines, talk to people who are just getting into it or need a new piece of gear or need some advice about where to go and what to do. And you'll learn. Where the point pressure points are, where the pain points are, where the opportunities are, where the products are. Hello again everyone. Welcome to episode 451 of the Outdoor Biz Podcast. Today, I'm speaking with fellow OWAA member Emanuel Rose. Emanuel is an author, outdoorsman, and marketing expert. He says his love for the natural world has been a constant in his life, and he finds joy in exploring towering forests and the energy of the ocean. His childhood fantasy of discovering special wild places inspired him to write, and his children's book series is growing as a result of that passion. Facebook Twitter Instagram Love the show? They also wrote about the importance of showing leadership in detoxing from technology and triggering more outdoor time. 12:35 Started a podcast because I was seeking to engage in conversations, provide resources for marketing and AI, and inspire outdoor exploration and wilderness activities. 15:39 re: podcasts, as the host, having the talent and the control allows for selecting guests and topics based on personal interest and connection to outdoor retail wholesale space. 17:21 Authentic Marketing in the Age of AI-AI Marketing: The text is a conversation about the challenges of marketing in the modern world. It focuses on the importance of simplifying marketing efforts and getting back to basics, such as addressing people's concerns in a human-to-human manner and making transactions easy for them. The speaker emphasizes the need to move away from getting lost in key performance indicators (KPIs) and various tools, and instead, focusing on solving problems, providing solutions, and effectively communicating with people. 21:00 Daily Routine: Morning writing and client work, followed by leisure activities in the afternoon such as golf, workouts, or mini adventures. I can easily access nature within an hour. 25:54 Including specific details when reaching out to someone generates better questions and improves the interaction. It's a great tip for effective communication. When everything goes smoothly, it's like, it's too easy, right? The aphorism that, you know, good judgment is the product of experience, but experience quite often is a lot of bad judgment and a lot of sort of uncomfortable or difficult circumstances. 10:35 Decided not to be a guide, became a photojournalist and storyteller for 35 years. 14:08 Exciting sailing journey leads to Antarctic expedition. 18:27 Since 1978, Jonathan has sold photos and stories in magazines. 19:52 Had a career in presenting slideshows in Australia, learned power of storytelling, moved away from climbing and photography. 24:36 Struggling to retrieve rope, dropped camera lens, still works. 28:21 Advancements in power sources for remote travel and photography, including lithium battery packs and solar panels, have made it easier to stay charged while on the move. These technologies have also influenced the capabilities of drones for capturing aerial photography. 30:18 Travel and technology have unavoidable carbon costs. 35:30 Passionate about landscape photography, finds power in nature, and emphasizes creating rather than just taking photos. The Lazy Girl's Guide to Podcasting: A Podcast about Podcasting and Podcasting Tips
In this episode, I'm joined by Kendall from Riverside, and we're recording this episode at the Podcast Show London. Kendall and I have been trying to get together for almost a year now to record an episode. Our schedules and timezones just haven't aligned until this event when I basically accosted her at the Riverside booth. No time like the present, right? We start by chatting about the rise of video podcasting, which a fun quiz at the Spotify booth revealed is the fastest growing segment of podcasting right now. Kendall shares her insights on why video is taking off - it allows creators to connect with their audience in a more personal way and repurpose content for social media. Her top tip? Just start recording video alongside your audio recordings. Don't overcomplicate it at first. Simply use a tool like Riverside's video recording capabilities to capture video versions. Then see how you like working with that video content before potentially expanding into a bigger video strategy. We also discuss the tendency creators have to want to do ALL THE THINGS right away, when a gradual buildup is much more sustainable. As Kendall says, the flashy "overnight successes" you see have usually been quietly creating for 5+ years beforehand.Check out past episodes I've done reviewing Riverside's tools:

Happy 8th Podversary to Journey to There! Life is a journey full of twists and turns, and this podcast is no exception. New adventures, new lessons, and even some life lessons from Finn! Catch up with Journey to There podcast host, Traci DeForge as she reflects on her journey through life's highs and lows and shares her musings on love, light, and joy Before I officially titled this episode I asked myself… is this new iteration of the J2T podcast a reboot or a renaissance? I felt like it was the latter but honestly, I had to look up the definition to be certain! Ren·ais·sance /ˈrenəˌsäns/ a revival of or renewed interest in something. noun: renaissance; plural noun: renaissances Alas, it is a true renaissance! Today is the 8th Podversary of Journey to There and with any anniversary comes reflection. Some of which are bittersweet. Why did I let some much time lapse? What if I had kept it moving forward? Is it worth bringing it back? I need to reign in the negative self-talk that's ramping up fast because I want to indulge in some good ole fashion flogging with thoughts like, “I own a damn full service production company. How could I let this happen?” The answer is I didn't “let” anything happen. Life happened. So, let's catch up! The pandemic impacted everyone individually and collectively. I'm still sorting through the whirlwind effect it had on our lives including the fact that I still don't have my full ensemble of taste buds back but I digress. My husband and I left the South Florida seaside life for the mountains of Taos, NM in 2020. This literal journey came with high expectations and ended with some bottomed out emotional disappointments. My salve of course was to bury myself neck deep in Produce Your Podcast which resulted in 3X growth. Yay! But if you've listened to any previous episodes of this podcast then you know…building successful businesses has never been my challenge. Building a successful personal life is my never ending life lesson. Times haven't changed that much. We left Taos and made a pit stop in Tucson, Az for a year. I was so checked out of my life that I literally justified the decision to live in a town that held no interest for me and wasn't remotely close to any of my friends and family. My brain told me none of that mattered because my focus needed to be on growing the business and that was all I was planning on doing anyway. Never underestimate the power of a work addicted brain. And now, a new adventure has begun with an International move to Mexico. I'm reconnected to my seaside life which I affectionately refer to as my sea -soul life. Although, I'm still not remotely geographically close to friends and family- they are a lot more likely to visit me here. We also added a new addition to the family. His name is Finn and he is a 100lb Golden Doodle who everyone should take their life lessons from… 1. Always be up for an adventure 2. Every day brings a new chance to experience joy 3. If you live for naps and snacks the rest will take care of itself. It's fair to say I'm still on my journey to there; thus the renaissance of the podcast. I've learned a few new lessons along the way and come through the other side of some stuff aka sh*t and ready to share my musings with you. I'm looking forward to this next chapter of the pod. I want us to connect, hang out and learn from each other. I'm rebooting without putting any pressure on myself. I'm not setting any specific goals on how many episodes there will be and when they will be released. I'm giving myself grace. I'm giving myself permission to be creative in the medium I love the most without getting all caught up in (what I know first hand) it takes to build a successful podcast. But really, isn't the definition of success relative? I look forward to reuniting with some old friends from the podcast audience. I'm beyond giddy with anticipation of meeting the new friends I'll make along the way. I'll sign off with one of my fav quotes that is one of my own. The life we create is based on the choices we make. Let's make choices that bring us love, light and joy and if we don't- let's ask for the courage to embrace the detours. Cheers to what's possible! Traci
On this very special episode of The Experience Strategy Podcast, Dave Norton and Aransas Savas are getting meta as they are joined by the producer of this podcast and the Founder and CEO of Produce Your Podcast, Traci DeForge. Traci is a pioneer in the world of podcasting and has created a thriving business in helping companies translate their services into audio formats that grow their brands. The industry is changing, though, and her clients' needs are evolving, so in this conversation, we help her identify powerful new ways to serve her clients, boost the value of the time they- and their audiences - spend together, and even find a creative new way to use existing processes to deepen customer insight as her business and the category grows. Three impactful questions every business owner, or experience strategist, can ask to learn how to better serve their customers: Did we succeed at the job the customer wanted to be done? Was the customer engaged in the experience? Did the customer feel like the experience was a good value for their time? If you are ready to have more impact on your customer and your business, please listen to this episode!

A special where we revisit the origins of the She Podcasts State of Podcasting. The very first event of this kind was held during the Podfest Global Summit in March 2021 where we had had a Mini-con. We thought it fitting to share this with you as it was an inspiring event that speaks to the #ClaimPodParity movement and is a great lead into the upcoming She Podcasts State of Podcasting 2022! The True Fiction Project was born from Reenita Hora's love of fiction and how she finds it in everyday non-fiction. In the pilot episode, Reenita talks about the purpose behind the True Fiction Project which will invite amazing guests to share their unique impact on the world while also giving different fiction writers the opportunity to create new fiction narratives based on the interview. Colleague and friend, Traci DeForge, joins the conversation as Reenita shares about her many career reincarnations and her traditional Indian upbringing in Bombay. Reenita opens up about her late father and her recent decision to quit her job to pursue creative endeavors like this podcast project. The second half of the podcast features a compelling fictional story inspired by key moments in Reenita's life and her experience of being a woman and building a career in a male-dominated culture. 3 Innings - A Fictional Story in Print IN THIS EPISODE: [01:16] True Fiction explained [02:33] Podcast producer introduced [03:28] Reenita shares about her life and career history [09:40] Guests to look forward to [12:24] Reenita about her family [18:04] Women in business in traditional Indian family [22:55] Building the narrative [28:14] That's my version of the truth [30:53] First inning - Gaia and Reenita as children [35:12] Second inning - Gaia and Reenita's early careers [40:53] Third inning - Gaia and Reenita's losses and gains KEY TAKEAWAYS: Reenita's career has included several reincarnations of herself: Ayurveda clinician, freelance writing, broadcast journalism in Hong Kong, recruited as a writer by Bloomberg, and now author, podcast host, and creative content creator. She recently quit her job to pursue her creative projects, like this podcast, that marries the two things she loves: fiction and how she finds it in everyday non-fiction. Reenita shares about her father's recent passing and the values he held as a serial entrepreneur. Reenita grew up in a traditional Indian home where women were not included in the inner workings of the family business. Only recently, after her father's passing, has she been invited to sit on the board of the family business. Her role, if not to join the family business, was to document the stories of her father and family life and plans to turn them into a book or TV show. Looking back on her upbringing, she has learned now that it's not about what you are or are not supposed to think about certain things, but rather what you have experienced. The purpose of this podcast is to share interviews with guests as a way to give other storytellers an opportunity to create fiction. IN THIS EPISODE: Two thirds of your potential audience may not've ever actually heard the episode. You're able to access an entire other two thirds of potential audience members out there through your social media by reposting older episodes #Rock the Podcast host Jessica Rhodes, founder and CEO of InterviewConnections.com interviews Traci DeForge, founder and CEO of Produce Your Podcast about all things podcasting. Below is a transcription of this episode: Voice Over: If you're ready to launch a podcast or you're currently podcasting and want to kick things up a notch here's another infopod from Produce your Podcast designed to take your show to the next level. Voice Over: Our experts are here to elevate your podcast produce your podcast is a full service turnkey podcast consulting agency. Visit our Web site at produce your podcast dot com. Have a question leave us a message or fill out the online contact form that's produce your podcast. Jessica Rhodes: Can you talk a little bit about the importance of promoting past episodes especially if you're producing evergreen content. Traci DeForge: The one thing that is I think is really important for podcasters to realize is that it's still such a new medium. And right now, and this is going to be a bit flabbergasting when you hear it. But it is factual. Right now, two thirds of your potential audience may not have ever actually heard your episode. And so what I mean by that is You're still able to access an entire other two thirds of potential audience members out there through your social media and through your other outreach efforts. So if you are putting out previous episodes that have evergreen content what happens is is that you always have the chance to speak to somebody who may want to hear that particular message. If you only release the episode one time and market it during that one week then you're only going to hit the people that are on social media or following fans and your guest followers and fans during that one week. So what we've found is that especially with our client shows, one of our clients for example that uses this really effectively is an autism expert that we produce out of Denver. Her show is Behind the Breakthroughs and she speaks to parents with kids with autism, she speaks to a therapists around her protocol for treating autism and working with children with autism. She's also a woman business owner and she talks about integrating her business into her life and effective ways to run her business and then she also share some really heartwarming but almost can be humorous behind the scenes stories of working with her client base. So all those have different messages targeted towards different people. So if she was only to market that one episode during that one week she could really miss out on developing her reach outside of just what that one topic might be. IN THIS EPISODE: Traci outlines a comprehensive strategy for growing your email list by repurposing your content in multiple areas. #Rock the Podcast host Jessica Rhodes, founder and CEO of InterviewConnections.com interviews Traci DeForge, founder and CEO of Produce Your Podcast about all things podcasting. Below is a transcription of this episode: Voice Over: If you're ready to launch a podcast or you're currently podcasting and want to kick things up a notch here's another infopod from Produce your Podcast designed to take your show to the next level. Jessica Rhodes: What tips do you have when you're working with entrepreneurs on building their list from their podcast? Traci DeForge: Oh my gosh. Another great question. So in my experience one of the things that and I've worked with thousands of entrepreneurs over the last 10 years which has such has been such a great catalyst to get me to this place with podcasting marketing strategy and one of the things that I guess there's one word and it's repurpose, repurpose, repurpose and that is probably one of the best investments that you can make using integrating podcasting as a marketing tool because it can become the hub of everything else you do to build your list. And what I mean by that is first and foremost you invest your time and resources in getting a show quality produced and ready to go and ready to be released. Once that audio is released then you can have that audio transcribed. Once you have that audio transcribed then you can take the transcription and you can extract social media post, content posts, you can take that full transcription and you can edit it into a blog post and then one of the things that you can utilize in terms of audience building is that you can take the transcription and turn it into a newsletter. If you're working ahead which can be a challenge for all of us entrepreneurs to work ahead then you can also as a secondary audience building tool is to release that newsletter in advance of the release of your actual episode which then provides your audience a bit of a VIP access. And in that way you can encourage people with a call to action which is if you sign up for our newsletter then you'll have access to either behind the scene content or content that gets released in advance of when the general public can access it. So they're all different kinds of ways but the most important thing to remember is that start with your podcast audio and repurpose, repurpose, repurpose, repurpose. IN THIS EPISODE: Traci lays out a comprehensive 5 step marketing strategy you can implement for every episode of your podcast. Jessica Rhodes: Let's start with your tips on gaining more listeners. Traci DeForge: Oh my gosh that is such a great question and one that we address in a very detail oriented way with our clients because one thing we all know for sure is that as much fun as you might be having creating and producing and having your own show if no one's out there listening to it and especially if you're utilizing it as part of a marketing tool and you're not getting the activation in the response that you're looking for then what's really the point, right? So we recommend that you have your show tile (that's your album art) on the show on iTunes and all the other platforms but recreate and have a specific graphic tile for each episode and when you release your episode utilize that and post that throughout the day, on the day, that it's released. But on social media, that's not enough. We all know that. So what we recommend is then secondarily come back and create a quote tile. Extract some content... something that was a quote from one of your guests in the show. Like for example we recently used Margie's quote of "Don't limit yourself" that she said on our Journey to There show. We created a quote tile that has the quote, the guest name and we also promote the links to the show. Again, in regards to the links to the show... don't just use your iTunes link. Use your link to iTunes, use your link to the website and when you alternate your posts make sure you alternate your links because people get access to their podcasts in different places and in different ways. And then thirdly, we use a program and you can access it.I think they still have a free account but the pro accounts are really cost effective and that's a program called wavve where you can actually insert your audio and use video. You can also upload those to youtube and then the 4 step is that is we'll pull back a previous episode so that we're still promoting the show but maybe a previous episode that has been released and then say you have a really great review on iTunes then we put out a 5 star social media image with the review from the show. It's a fully comprehensive per week social media strategy that's encapsulated from the day that the episode releases all the way through pulling back a previous episode and wrapping it up with a review for the show.
