Send us feedback/questions via TextHey there, Dave Jackson here! In this episode, Jim Collison and I dove deep into some hot topics in podcasting and audio media. We kicked things off with a look at the latest Edison Research findings showing that, for the first time, more time is spent listening to podcasts than to AM/FM radio for spoken word audio. We reminisced about the evolution of radio, the challenges of finding a working radio today, the shift of talk and sports content to podcasts, and how technology keeps changing the game.We also had fun nostalgia moments: remembering AM static, Headbanger's Ball, MTV catchphrases, and what really happened to music videos.Advertising in podcasting got a thorough critique—how much is too much, what makes ads skip-worthy or valuable, and what lessons we can take from radio and even the Super Bowl.Another lively discussion came up around video podcasting. We debated YouTube versus distributing video everywhere, addressed anti-YouTube sentiments, and reminded listeners that audio is still king for a lot of people.I also shared some behind-the-scenes tech workflows, like how I use Tella, Hindenburg, and Podchapters, how to move sites to Podpage, and why no tool does it all (yet).Big philosophical questions popped up too: What would actually "kill" podcasting? Is it too many bad ads, a decline in content quality, or moving away from RSS? Or, is podcasting simply evolving, and are our definitions (or nostalgia) holding us back?Randy Black called in with a great riff on what "remarkable content" really means—it can be good or bad. We wrapped up by agreeing that, at the end of the day, success in podcasting comes from making meaningful shows for your audience and being authentic.Sponsors:PodcastBranding.co - They see you before they hear youBasedonastruestorypodcast.com - Comparing Hollywood with History?Video Version (unedited)Mentioned In This EpisodeSchool of Podcastinghttps://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/joinPodpagehttp://www.trypodpage.comHome Gadget GeeksFeatured Supporter: Shane from SpybraryWe interview spy authors, espionage historians and fans of spy books, spy movies and spy TV series! MONEY FOR ALL - The average tax refund is 10.9% higher so far this season, compared to about the same point in 2025, according to early filing data from the IRS. - The 2026 tax season opened Jan. 26, and the average refund amount was $2,290 as of Feb. 6, up from $2,065 about one year prior, the IRS reported Friday night. - As of Feb. 6, the total amount refunded was more than $16.9 billion, up 1.9% compared to last year, according to the IRS release. That figure reflects current-year returns only. - This is partly because there were excess-witholdings from last year on the rules changed and paycheck withholdings were not adjusted. This is a one time situation.. Emplyment - 4.3% - "Better" than expected payrolls number - A major revision was released last Wednesday. Overall 2025 job growth was much weaker than initially reported. The total net change for the full year 2025 was revised down from +584,000 jobs to just +181,000 jobs (seasonally adjusted) — an average of only about 15,000 jobs added per month instead of ~49,000. This made 2025 one of the weakest years for job creation in recent non-recession periods. - Employment levels were consistently overstated throughout 2025 by roughly 800,000 to over 1 million jobs, peaking around mid-year. For example: By March 2025, the level was revised down by 898,000. By December 2025 (preliminary), down by 1,029,000. - Monthly changes were also adjusted downward in most cases (e.g., August's originally reported -26,000 became a larger loss of -70,000; September's +108,000 became +76,000). - The revisions reflect normal annual benchmarking, but this one was unusually large (larger than the typical 0.2% average over the prior decade), likely due to factors like overestimation of business births or other data mismatches. - In short, the data reveals that the U.S. labor market in 2025 was significantly softer than the monthly headlines suggested at the time — job growth was overstated by a substantial margin, painting a picture of a much weaker employment picture for the year. AI Updates - While U.S. markets have been focused on the impact of Anthropic and Altruist's tools on software and financial services, China's tech giants have released AI models this week that have shown advancements in robotics and video generation. - Google is reporting that China's AI models are just MONTHS behind western models - However - is this progress? In a video demo, Alibaba showed a robot with pincers for hands that appeared to be able to count oranges, pick them up and place them in a basket. It was also shown taking milk out of a fridge. - Alibaba on Monday unveiled a new artificial intelligence model Qwen 3.5 designed to execute complex tasks independently, with big improvements in performance and cost that the Chinese tech giant claims beat major U.S. rival models on several benchmarks. - Zhipu AI — which trades as Knowledge Atlas Technology in Hong Kong said the model approaches Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.5 in coding benchmarks while surpassing Google's Gemini 3 Pro on some tests. - Shares of MiniMax also jumped Thursday after it launched its updated M2.5 open-source model with enhanced AI agent tools. Grok Update - Grok, Elon Musk's AI chatbot, has been gaining ground in the U.S. over the past months, data showed, even as it draws global censure and regulatory scrutiny after being used to generate a wave of non-consensual sexualized images of women and minors. - U.S. market share of the tool rose to 17.8% last month from 14% in December, and 1.9% in January 2025, according to data from research firm Apptopia. - Men are still the largest % users of Grok ~ 78% (down from 89% in April 2025) AI Market Share - ChatGPT's share slumped to 52.9% last month from 80.9% in January last year, while Gemini's grew to 29.4% from 17.3% over the same period. AI Market Share InfoGrapic and AI Understanding - Have we gone through this? - At its core, AI is technology that lets machines perform tasks that normally require human intelligence — things like understanding language, recognizing images, making decisions, or solving problems. - Modern AI (especially since ~2022) is dominated by machine learning — systems that learn patterns from huge amounts of data instead of being explicitly programmed rule-by-rule. - Inference is the "using" or "applying" phase of AI — when a trained model takes new input and produces an output / prediction / answer. Contrast with training (the "learning" phase): ------ Training ? Like a student studying for years: very compute-heavy, expensive, done once (or rarely) on massive servers/GPUs, adjusts billions of parameters based on examples. ------ Inference ? Like the student taking a test or doing their job: much faster, cheaper, runs on your phone/laptop/cloud, uses the fixed knowledge from training to respond instantly. - gentic AI takes regular AI (like chat models) to the next level: instead of just answering questions or generating text, these systems act autonomously to achieve goals with minimal human help. "Agentic" comes from "agency" — the ability to make decisions, plan, use tools, take actions, adapt, and even learn from results — like a smart digital employee rather than just a smart answer machine. AI Infographic Last AI Item - A shortage of memory chips is hammering profits, derailing corporate plans, and inflating price tags on various products, with the crunch expected to get worse. - The fundamental reason for the squeeze is the buildout of AI data centers, with companies like Alphabet and OpenAI buying up large shares of memory chip production, leaving consumer electronics producers fighting over a dwindling supply. - The resulting price spikes are causing concern, with some warning of "RAMmageddon" and others predicting that memory chip prices will go "parabolic", bringing lavish profits to some companies but painful prices to the rest of the electronics sector. Here is something: - Gallup will no longer track presidential approval ratings after nearly 90 years - Founded by George Gallup in 1935, the Washington, DC-based management company began tracking the president's job performance 88 years ago. - Gallup told USA TODAY it will no longer publish "favorability ratings of political figures," a decision it said "reflects an evolution in how Gallup focuses its public research and thought leadership." - Gallup said the ratings are now "widely produced, aggregated and interpreted, and no longer represent an area where Gallup can make its most distinctive contribution." - "Our commitment is to long-term, methodologically sound research on issues and conditions that shape people's lives," the company wrote, adding that its work will continue through the Gallup Poll Social Series, the Gallup Quarterly Business Review, the World Poll and more. - Seems like they are unable to SHAPE opinion due to social media etc.....? Apple Podcast Update - Big news! - Apple on Monday announced that it will bring a new integrated video podcast experience to Apple Podcasts this spring. - The move comes as video viewership continues to reshape podcasting. About 37% of people over age 12 watch video podcasts monthly, according to Edison Research. - The update brings Apple Podcasts more in-line with its competitors Spotify, YouTube and now Netflix, which have increasingly leaned into video podcasting. -“Twenty years ago, Apple helped take podcasting mainstream by adding podcasts to iTunes, and more than a decade ago, we introduced the dedicated Apple Podcasts app,” said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Services, in a statement. “ - By bringing a category-leading video experience to Apple Podcasts, we're putting creators in full control of their content and how they build their businesses, while making it easier than ever for audiences to listen to or watch podcasts.” M&A - Texas Instruments Inc. has reached an agreement to buy Silicon Laboratories Inc. for about $7.5 billion, deepening its exposure to several markets for chips. - Silicon Labs investors will receive $231 in cash for each share of the company's common stock and the transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027. - The transaction still needs to win approval by investors in Silicon Labs and shares of Silicon Labs surged by 51% to $206.48 after the announcement. Inflation - This helps - PepsiCo, will cut prices on core brands such as Lay's and Doritos by up to 15% following a consumer backlash against several previous price hikes, the snacks and beverage maker said on Tuesday after it topped fourth-quarter results. Miran - Moving - Federal Reserve Governor Stephen Miran is leaving his post as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, CNBC has confirmed. - He joined the CEA in January 2025, but had been on leave from that post since last September when he filled the unexpired term of former Fed Governor Adriana Kugler.- He reamins on Fed board No Biggie???? - There are some astonishing cased being reported of Bad AI in the operating room - JNJ's TruDi Navigation System - Since AI was added to the device, the FDA has received unconfirmed reports of at least 100 malfunctions and adverse events. - At least 10 people were injured between late 2021 and November 2025, according to the reports. Most allegedly involved errors in which the TruDi Navigation System misinformed surgeons about the location of their instruments while they were using them inside patients' heads during operations. - Cerebrospinal fluid reportedly leaked from one patient's nose. In another reported case, a surgeon mistakenly punctured the base of a patient's skull. In two other cases, patients each allegedly suffered strokes after a major artery was accidentally injured. Cuba - The main airport has putt out a bulletin that they are out of Jet Fuel - Blackouts and lack of other fuels are creating big problems - No airlines have stopped running at this point, but many will as they cannot refuel - This is a bigger problem for cargo planes (supplies) that may not be able to risk flying to Cuba as they will not be able to get out. Dalio Warning - Legendary investor Ray Dalio said on Tuesday the world was “on the brink” of a capital war. - He said central banks and sovereign wealth funds were already preparing for measures like foreign exchange and capital controls. - "When money is weaponized using measures like trade embargoes, blocking access to capital markets, or using ownership of debt as leverage." - “Capital, money, matters,” Dalio said Tuesday. “We're seeing capital controls … taking place all over the world today, and who will experience that is questionable. So, we are on the brink — that doesn't mean we are in [a capital war now], but it means that it's a logical concern.” - Could this be why gold and siver are being hoarded (physical assets over digital currency? - Is China's edict to banks to diversify away from US Treasuries a sign? Self Boosted Valuation - Waymo is aiming to raise about $16 billion in a financing-round that would value it at nearly $110 billion, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the matter. - Alphabet would provide about $13 billion to the autonomous driving firm while the rest would come from investors including Sequoia Capital, DST Global and Dragoneer Investment Group, the report added. - Soooooo - Waymo is a unit of Alphabet.... Alphabet providing 80% of the funding that boosts valuations..... Hmmmmmmmm Warner Brothers - Warner Bros Discovery Inc is considering reopening sale talks with Paramount Skydance Corp after receiving its amended offer. - The Warner Bros board is discussing whether Paramount could offer a path to a superior deal, which may ignite a second bidding war with Netflix Inc. - Paramount submitted amended terms that addressed several concerns, including covering a fee owed to Netflix and offering to backstop a Warner Bros debt refinancing. Economics Coming Up - Short Week - plenty of Reports - Wednesday - Durable Goods, Housing Starts, Industrial Production, FOMC Minutes - Thursday - Philly Fed, Initial Claims - Friday: PCE, Personal Income and Spending, GDP for Q4 (3.6%) ----- New Home Sales, UMich Feb Final Love the Show? Awareness Is One Thing, Listening Is Another Listening habits reveal just how powerful podcasting has become. In mid-2023, Edison Research reported a major shift in media consumption: on-demand audio, including podcasts and streaming music, surpassed traditional AM/FM radio in total listening time across the United States. Podcasts That Are Different: How The Law Enforcement Talk Podcast Reaches Millions for Free. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and other podcast platforms. That trend has only accelerated. According to Infinite Dial data released in early 2025, 70% of Americans have listened to a podcast at least once, up from 55% in 2020. While listening dipped briefly in 2022 as pandemic routines normalized, both monthly and weekly consumption rebounded strongly in 2023 and has continued to grow. Podcasting, it is now clear, is no longer an experiment. It is a mainstream medium. A Podcast That Breaks the Mold Among the thousands of shows competing for attention, some podcasts stand out by doing things differently. One of those is the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, a program built around police, crime, trauma, and real-life stories, delivered without cost and without filters. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. “It's 100 percent free,” the show's creator often emphasizes. “No subscriptions, no credit cards, and no paywalls. Each episode is a conversation, not an interview. Guests are encouraged to speak openly, allowing their experiences to unfold naturally. Podcasts That Are Different: How The Law Enforcement Talk Podcast Reaches Millions for Free. Approximately 75% of the episodes focus on trauma-related stories, often connected to crime. Guests include law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, military members, victims of violent crime, survivors, and family members. These conversations explore the impact of trauma, not only on the individual, but on families, relationships, and long-term purpose. A Familiar Format With a Broad Audience The show's structure mirrors popular television programs, in an audio format, such as The Homicide Hunter and Murder Chose Me. Those shows are not designed exclusively for detectives; they are meant for the general public, offering real stories told by those who lived them. 1168. Y no me sorprende. It's 2025, and women in the U.S. are listening to podcasts at three times the rate they were just a decade ago.If you're a podcaster speaking to a female audience—or thinking about starting a show—this is your moment. And in this week's episode, I brought in YouTube and video podcast strategist Yesenia Bocanegra so that we could discuss Women's Audio Report: Women & Podcasts, the latest Edison Research & SiriusXM study that highlights female listener behavior. The study reveals how women in the U.S. are consuming podcasts in 2025, what content they're looking for, and how we - as podcasters, marketers, and business owners - can show up with more intention, strategy, and impact. But this isn't just a data breakdown. It's a conversation about storytelling, emotional connection, and why podcasting continues to be one of the most intimate and powerful mediums out there. What could doing less look like for your podcast? Life is chaos these days. The hours often seem to fill up instantly with all the things on your plate, so don't feel bad if publishing podcast episodes start to slide to the bottom of your to-do list. Stumbling on the podcasting flow is totally normal—and totally fixable. The good news is that you can cut back on your workload and still release an impactful, exciting show. Curbing the number of hours you spend prepping, recording, editing, publishing, and promoting doesn't have to result in lower-quality episodes. By circling back to your original goals and finding ways to trim, rearrange, and even cut tasks that don't serve you, a process emerges that keeps you excited to create but not bogged down for hours and hours you just don't have. Yes, you have the potential to balance more rest and a meaningful show: How to check in on your definition of success Why you're getting better with every show, even if you didn't notice How to go out with heart if you decide to take a break Links worth mentioning from the episode: Episode 84, “Simplify Your Workflow to Keep Your Podcasting Passion Alive with Craig Constantine” - https://www.organizedsound.ca/simplify-your-workflow-to-keep-your-podcasting-passion-alive-with-craig-constantine-episode-84/ Episode 86, “Warm Up to a Healthier, More Confident Voice with Nic Redman” - https://www.organizedsound.ca/warm-up-to-a-healthier-more-confident-voice-with-nic-redman-episode-86/ Edison Research, Infinite Dial 2024 - https://www.edisonresearch.com/the-infinite-dial-2024/ Edison Research, Infinite Dial 2023 - https://www.edisonresearch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/The-Infinite-Dial-2023.pdf Connect with Mary! This very specific moment in time. We're looking at the very end of 2024. We're in early November. As I record this, I feel like the collective Western world is at a standstill, kind of waiting in the wings, in limbo to see what's going to drop next. Whether that is interest rates for housing, local or federal elections, cost of living, like grocery prices rising. And you know, there's still like the day to day stuff like managing your work and your podcast is part of that. So there's a lot happening in your world, and podcasting might not be at the top of your list of to do's. I know. And you know what? I'm here to say that it's okay if that's what you're thinking. Like, I got other things to do than to work on my podcast right now. And yeah, it's okay. And this is coming from someone who makes a living editing, managing and strategizing other people's podcasts. Podcasts is mainly what I do. So that's a scary thought for me that if I'm telling people to podcast less, is that going to be less for me as well? How do I survive that? But once you take a step back, less is more. As they say, doing less at this time in history can reap many benefits in the future. During your podcasting journey, just like any other parts of your life, it's always good to take a step back. Ask yourself, is there anything I can optimize or do less of, while still enjoying making my show? So let's get into how you can reassess your podcast, so you can still have fun creating a show that you love and have the work of making a podcast that meets your capacity. This is episode 87 on the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. > [MUSIC ENDS]
One of my favorite ways to grow your audience is by giving podcast interviews. It sounds obvious, but podcast listeners listen to podcasts. PODCAST INTERVIEWS TO GROW According to the Podcast Consumer Report 2024 study done by Edison Research, the average podcast listener consumes an average of 8.3 episodes a week. The report also states podcast listeners consume an average of 11.2 hours of podcasts each week. Podcast listeners prefer podcasts as their form of entertainment. They don't just dabble. They go all in. Over one episode a day and over 90 minutes a day. To reach your ideal listeners, do more podcast interviews. REPURPOSE YOUR INTERVIEWS But don't stop there. When you do podcast interviews on other shows, use that content in every way possible. Talk to the host prior to conducting the interview to get permission to use that interview for your own promotion. You can repurpose your podcast interviews in a variety of ways to gain more visibility. When you do, be sure to promote their podcast as well. The more you promote the podcasts that interview you, the more podcasters will be interested in having you on their shows. Repurposing your podcast interviews is an effective way to create promotional content without having to create all of the content yourself. Now you've elevated the power of appearing on other shows to a whole new level. LEVERAGING PODCAST INTERVIEWS On this episode, I interview Lyndsay Phillips. She is brilliant when it comes to leveraging your podcast interviews. Lyndsay Phillips is the CEO of Smooth Business Podcasting, speaker, guest expert, host of Leverage Your Podcast show and creator of the Podcast Leverage System. Serving authors, coaches, experts & thought leaders who are serious about using their voice to impact others and grow their business. Lyndsay excels in transforming podcast episodes, guest interviews, summits, and videos into captivating, consumable content that attracts collaborations, leads and clients. It's Friday, August 2nd, A.D. 2024. This is The World View in 5 Minutes written by Kevin Swanson and heard at www.TheWorldView.com. Filling in for Adam McManus I'm Ean Leppin. Liberty Counsel Represents Kim Davis Liberty Counsel is taking hits for representing Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis' religious liberty case at the 6th Circuit Court Appeals. At issue is the Liberty Counsel's challenge of the 2015 Obergefell decision and a potential reversal, in favor of religious liberty. Kim and her husband, as well as Liberty Counsel have been subjected to multiple, serious death threats. Liberty Counsel President Mat Staver released a statement Monday, noting that “Anyone who stands up to the hateful agenda of the LGBTQ Mafia is demonized. . .. the LGBTQ left will not tolerate religious freedom and wants to destroy anyone who disagrees.” Biden Administration Announces Plea Deal with 9/11 Conspirators The Biden administration Department of Justice has announced a plea deal with alleged conspirators of the 9/11 attacks, which occurred 23 years ago. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid Bin ‘Attash, and Mustafa al Hawsawi will plead guilty to conspiracy and murder charges, but will not face the death penalty for the murders of 2,977 people on September 11, 2001. Senator JD Vance commenting on the deal told an audience yesterday, “"We need a president who kills terrorists, not negotiates with them.” And Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, called the decision “unthinkable” and a “slap in the face” for families of those murdered by the terrorists. God said, “Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man.” (Gen. 9:6) 60% of Americans Support Death Penalty 60% of Americans support the death penalty. The US Homicide rate has also increased since 2014, from 4.7 per 100,000, to 6.0 per 100,000 persons in 2023, which accounts for over 20,000 murders. Keep in mind, “The ruler is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” Romans 13:4 20 Dead Over Venezuelan Protests Protests following the Venezuelan sham election over the weekend in which the communist dictator claimed victory - have resulted in 20 deaths, and 1,072 persons arrested by the regime, according to Effecto Cocuyo — an independent news source. The nation's prosecutor, Tarek William Saab has warned protestors, that they are facing up to 20-30 years in prison. A respected American polling organization, Edison Research, has issued its exit poll results for the Venezuelan election. Opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia of the Unitary Platform easily won by a margin of 65 to 31%. Younger (18-29 year old) voters were more likely to vote against the communist dictator, by a margin of 74% to 21%. Edison Research has been the sole provider of election data to the National Election Pool, consisting of ABC News, CBS News, CNN, and NBC News. Also, AltaVista obtained results from about 1,000 polling stations, photographed them, analyzed them and then sent the results around the world. They also showed a landslide: 66 percent for González, 31 percent for Maduro. Debt in Africa Has Increased Substantially Africa's debt burden has increased substantially just since 2010. Reuters reports that Zambia, Ethiopia, and Ghana are now in default. And at least 20 African nations have taken on a heavy debt burden, as defined by the IMF, a condition that did not exist for these countries just 10 years ago. Although, none of these nations are in as severe a condition as the United States - with a debt-to-GDP ratio — now at 122% up from 64% in 2008. Japan, Sudan, Lebanon, and Greece have a higher debt-to-GDP ratio than the United States. “The debtor is servant to the lender.” Proverbs 22:7. By God's mercies, Blair fought off the armed robber for several harrowing minutes — in a desperate fight for his life, finally pushing him out the door of the restaurant. Blair talked about the struggle in an interview with WXIA TV — BLAIR: “I broke his glasses. I put my thumb into his eye. He hit me several times.” WXIA TV ANNOUNCER: “Fighting off the intruder, the whole time thinking: BLAIR: “I want to see my kids. That's really it. Get through this.
