It's been my pleasure to get to know Jane over the last 18 months and it was a must to invite her onto the podcast. As you can tell from her bio below, she has so much experience and it was great for her to share her perspectives on leadership. After a 15 year career in media and entertainment, which involved developing and running multi-million advertising and events accounts for leading brands such as Europcar, British Airways, Coca-Cola and Saab, Jane joined a struggling London design agency as MD and shareholder. Over the course of the following three years, she built the business up from insolvency into a globally acclaimed, multi award winning brand identity business specialising in television corporate identity. Clients included ITV, Discovery Networks, global German news channel Deutsche Welle, RAI (Italy) and various other leading commercial as well state owned TV companies across Europe and the US. As a result of this strategic focus, turnover escalated from £1-6M in a single year, which triggered a sale to US communications group Interpublic and enabled Jane to exit from the business with a payout that enabled her to focus on raising her 3 young children and starting a new business from home. For several years, Jane ran a successful children's education business, which she combined with a significant residential development project on a listed building in Amersham, Bucks. She also began sourcing land for developers and introduced equity funds - both her own and other investors - into other development projects, building expertise in an area she is still active in today. During this period Jane was diagnosed with serious breast cancer, and endured chemotherapy, radiotherapy and multiple operations which caused her to re-assess and re-evaluate many aspects of her life and work. She founded her current business The Smart Connector after some painful personal challenges, including her husband having an affair and running away overnight, and a prolonged and loss making experience with some unethical business partners in property. This taught her that in business as well as life people must always come before profit, and this also inspired her best selling book 'The Smart Connector'. Today Jane helps other entrepreneurs to scale their businesses fast, and attract their ideal clients. As an expert marketer who consults and advises in this area, she focuses on leadership marketing, through her flagship programme, Ideal Client Success: https://idealclientsuccess.com/masterclass www.investdevelop.co.uk https:// www.facebook.com/investdevelopUK https:// www.linkedin.com/in/janebayler/ Basic format – 20 minutes to help you on your leadership journey PLEASE ENJOY Make sure you follow/subscribe to my social media platforms - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/STARDevelopmentuk/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/stuart-waddington-1882b4aa/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stuart_waddington/?hl=en YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/LeadershipWhatsonyourmind Spotify - #Leadership – What's on your mind? Jane Curnow was in and out of therapy from the age of 16, by which time she had made two attempts on her life, and had three hospitalisations. Chronically addicted to drugs and alcohol, exercise, she had eating disorders, anxiety, serious medication all of which made depression Janes intimate companion and for over 25 years. Significantly, at 45 years of age she suffered an injury that saw her having to change her exercise routine because she was addicted to exercise because her self worth through her appearance was not as she thought it should be.  Her physio literally dragged by the hair, kicking and screaming, into the weights room. Required to adopt a kinder approach to her body, later Jane debuted as a fitness model at the age of 46 and her journey of recovery had begun. Through the intense protocol required to compete on stage, and driven by vanity and low self-worth, Jane inadvertently stumbled across the answers she had searched a lifetime for curing herself from depression! As a fitness model, she celebrated her 50th birthday on stage in 2016 as her declaration to the world that she was fully recovered! In the process she cured herself of osteoarthritis in both knees, as she’d been told two knee replacements were needed which she refused. Today Jane enjoys a symptom free menopause as well as the body and energy levels of a 30 year old! As a result of her past she is now passionate about health, wellness & empowering women to feel as AMAZING as she now does! Today as a mindset & lifestyle coach, author, blogger & fitness model and Jane has dedicated her life to inspiring, supporting and motivating as many women as possible who suffer in silence as she used to.  Go to Joan’s website janecurnow.com to learn more. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

This podcast emanates from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Rock Island is one of what the locals call the "Quad Cities", four towns or small cities–Rock Island and Moline in Illinois, Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa–that stretch along the Mississippi River at what used to be the largest rapids on the Upper Mississippi, just above where the Rock River flows into the Father of Waters. These rapids are centered on Arsenal Island, which has been occupied by the United States Army since 1830 when it was Fort Armstrong. If there's a genius of this curious place, it's Black Hawk, the war chief of the Sauk tribe that once had its  town near the junction of the Rock and Mississippi, and which summered on what's now Arsenal Island. Around here, Black Hawk is the name of a college, a hotel, and a chain of banks. Farther afield there's the Chicago Black Hawks, and the Army's workhorse helicopter that owe their name to his inspiration. As my guest today, my colleague Jane Simonsen has said in a recent article, Black Hawk is now "an 'Indian' figure tinted by a vague sense of history and burnished by settler-colonist nostalgia." Today Jane and I discuss Black Hawk, but more than that. We discuss what Black Hawk wore. This turns out to be very important, because what he wore provoked white Americans to comment, and sometimes provoked them to irritation or pity. Fashion and how it's appropriated say not just something about the wearer, but the beholder. In this case, it says a lot about how we want Indians to be–and in a strange way, very hip, with-it, post modernly conscious people turn out to have a sensibility remarkably similar to people in the 1830's. Jane Simonsen is Associate Professor of History here at Augustana College, and our Department's Chair. She is the author of the well-reviewed Making Home Work: Domesticity and Native American Assimilation in the American West, 1860-1919, published by the University of North Carolina Press.
