I just talked about the ‘inner windbreak' of the fan, and the spokes of the fan protecting espalier fruit etc. Essentially, our first line of defence against the salt laden winds was a mighty windbreak on the two most vulnerable sides of the garden. We first put up an artificial windbreak, about 6 ft high, of very strong net battened to substantial posts concreted into the ground. Part of this was zigzagging - giving it extra strength and increased protection for the trees we then planted.

Welcome back to the Sunflower Allotment Podcast! We are absolutely delighted to bring you an interview with Joy Larkcom, renown gardener, journalist and author of a host of influential gardening books including Grown Your Own Vegetables and Oriental Vegetables. When Peter and Tim first met back in March 2021, Peter swiftly placed a book into Tim's hands and said, "this will be your allotment bible", it was Joy Larkcom's Grow Your Own Vegetables.  Tim, like Peter before him, has used it religiously and they were both therefore delighted when Joy agreed to record two episodes. This episode focuses on the Grand Vegetable Tour that Joy and her family embarked upon in 1977. It was a pioneering adventure-on-a-shoestring that focused on the research of native salad plants. The results would be seismic and changed the commercial salad industry forever. In this episode Peter, Rachel and Tim discuss her vegetable tour as well as her career as a journalist and author, along with her continual passion for gardening.  If you have any questions, please do get in touch via email or social media:Email: sunflowerallotmentpodcast@gmail.com Twitter and Instagram: @sunflowerpod1

This week's guest is Margaret To, founder of Studio SAKA, who helps scientists, educators, non-profits, entrepreneurs and government agencies better communicate social and climate solutions through film, design, and immersive experiences - in order to engage public conversations and inspire action. In 2020 Margaret did a project that changed her. It was  a video series about regenerative agriculture in Hawaii. It made her rethink how she was living and she decided to start her own small vegetable plot with her nieces. At 17, she had left Hong Kong and moved to Los Angeles to study design and animation- it was freeing yet challenging, because her internal belief system wasn't yet matching her purpose. But as her artistic sense evolved so did her consciousness. After watching the film Before The Flood by Fisher Stevens, the Climate Crisis really hit home for her and she started to look at ways that she could communicate creatively about climate solutions. After a few years working as a freelancer she decided to create her own film studio. But first she joined a women's entrepreneurship class so that she approached her business Studio SAKA with a business head. Now she does design, animation, and creative direction at Studio SAKA, all with the environment, sustainability and climate solutions front of mind. Over time she has become someone who is able to embrace fear, not letting fear hinder her but rather turning fear into a drive and motivation to keep moving forward.  Thanks so much Margaret for channelling your creativity for climate change and helping others see how they can make a difference too. Thanks also for showing us that wherever we're at we can all make the incremental changes that are needed to help save our planet. You can find out more about Margaret's work at https://www.studiosaka.coand follow her on Linkedin @studiosakaJoin Lou on Linkedin, or sign up to her mailing list for her newsletter and a free podcast guesting mini-guide. When I asked the members of my free Facebook group, the Beginner's Garden Shortcut, what questions they had about their fall vegetable garden, I received more feedback than almost any other topic. Clearly, many beginning gardeners are interested in fall gardening. But they recognize it's not as straightforward as the spring or summer garden. For the beginner, fall gardening isn't as simple to get started. But, it is generally easier than the summer garden. With fewer pests and weeds, we get to enjoy gardening in cooler days and eat crops that don't grow well in the heat of the summer. Because getting started with planting the fall vegetable garden takes a bit of understanding of this unique garden season, Stacey Murphey of Grow Your Own Vegetables tackles some of the most common fall gardening questions I hear.

When many beginning gardeners think about fall gardening, they find themselves overwhelmed. After all, they're tired from the effort put into the summer garden, and the thought of more work seems exhausting. Plus, they don't know when or how to get started. The truth is, fall gardening can be the most rewarding time to grow a vegetable garden. It just takes a bit of know-how to get started. In this week's episode of the Beginner's Garden Podcast, master gardener and garden teacher Stacey Murphy of Grow Your Own Vegetables talks beginners through how to get started planting and growing their fall gardens. Gail, Hazel and host Philippa dig into the subject of garden writing with the journalist and social historian Ursula Buchan and Matt Collins, nature writer and Head Gardener at London’s Garden Museum. The conversation meanders convivially in the usual Slightly Foxed manner, via daredevil plant-hunters, early wild gardening advocates such as Gertrude Jekyll, William Robinson and Vita Sackville-West, and the passing passions and fashions of garden design, with a peek over the hedge at Christopher Lloyd’s Great Dixter along the way. And there’s the usual round-up of the latest bookish harvest from the Slightly Foxed office and plenty of recommendations for reading off the beaten track too.
