In this episode, Tom Tobin, Lillian Nave, and Jennifer Pusateri join us to discuss the most recent evolution of the UDL guidelines. Tom is a founding member of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Mentoring at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the author of the forthcoming book, UDL at Scale: Adopting Universal Design for Learning across Higher Education, as well as Reach Everyone, Teach Everyone: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education and several other works related to teaching and learning. Lillian is the Faculty and Educational Development Specialist for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Student Success at Appalachian State University's Hickory Campus, a senior lecturer in first-year seminar, and the host of the ThinkUDL podcast. Jennifer is the Senior Universal Design Consultant at The University of Kentucky and has served as the co-chair of the international UDL in Higher Education Network. She is a member of the CAST National Faculty and is the author of Transform Your Teaching with Universal Design for Learning: Six Steps to Jumpstart Your Practice. In a recent poll, I asked educators (instructional designers, professors, teachers, developers, etc.) if they had a side hustle. 578 educators voted and 56% said yes. What opportunities are out there for educators though? In this episode, I'll share with you common side hustles for educators.
Silas Soule moved to Kansas as a teenager. He and his family helped out with the underground, and when it came time to arm up against the border ruffians, Silas didn't hesitate. Later, during the Civil War, he was commissioned as an officer in the Union Army and served with distinction during the battle of Glorietta Pass. Afterward, he did all he could to protect the Colorado frontier from hostiles. At least, he did until Colonel Chivington ordered him to attack the peaceful village of Black Kettle at Sand Creek. Silas Soule may not be a household name or the subject of movies, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised and inspired by his story. So please, join me today as we recognize a true American Hero, one who wasn't afraid to spill a little blood but at the same time was willing to sacrifice it all for what was right. And in the end, this integrity cost him his life. Also discussed are Bleeding Kansas, John Brown and the raid on Harpers Ferry, the Colorado gold rush, Tom Tobin and the murderous Espinosa brothers, the Cheyenne and Arapaho, and finally, the Sand Creek massacre. Welcome to Episode 115 of the Think UDL podcast: UDL at Scale with Tom Tobin. Thomas J. Tobin is a founding member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Teaching, Learning and Mentoring as well as an author, speaker, and consultant on UDL, evaluating online teaching, copyright, academic integrity, and alt-ac careers (non-traditional and non-faculty career paths). Not only that, Tom is my long standing UDL friend whom I have already once interviewed in episode 3 of the Think UDL podcast. And he is back on the show again to move us far forward from that conversation way back in 2018. In fact, this conversation is about how to systematically implement UDL at scale. Tom has been doing a lot of research and work on how universities and systems can be successful in implementing UDL at large, not just in classrooms or in departments, and he has some sage advice and actual real evidence of what has already worked, and what we all might be able to do to accomplish this goal. It is an incredibly helpful and enlightening conversation based on so many conversations that Tom has had with UDL practitioners around the world! And let me also say now, too, that Tom says by the end of this episode that he wants to hear from you and your strategies and successes in implementing UDL at scale. So please look over the resources for this episode and reach out to Tom, too!
Felipe Espinosa and his newly recruited accomplice, 14 year old Julian, were in the midst of a killing spree when the army called in their most trusted tracker in 1863. We tell the story of Tom Tobin, a larger than life character, and how he put a stop to the Bloody Espinosas; and of course, there are disagreements on how exactly he did that.
Josh Luckens interviews Dr. Thomas J. Tobin, who discusses the power of “the big five: voice, choice, agency, safety, and belonging” in teaching and learning. Dr. Tobin is a specialist in Teaching, Learning, and Academic Technology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is a celebrated scholar and speaker on technology-mediated education and is the co-author of Reach Everyone, Teach Everyone: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education.Dr. Tobin shares his belief that all learners are capable of transforming themselves with the right tools, time, and the space to imagine new possibilities in their lives. He offers strategies for meeting both students and faculty where they are and implementing evidence-based practices to support success in the classroom. Paraphrasing Dr. Tobin:The real joy of teaching is seeing your learners engage with problems, ideas, and concepts in ways that you might never have thought to do.People, groups, institutions, systems—they don't change unless they themselves perceive a need to do so. I've had far more success when I ask questions to allow people to identify their own challenges than just coming in with suggestions. It all goes back to motivation; unless you have a reason why you want to learn something, you don't learn it. And if you have a genuine reason to stick with a learning process, you'll stick with it way beyond what other people tell you to do. That's the kind of inspiration and engagement that we aspire to as learning designers.Additional resources:Dr. Tobin's website, thomasjtobin.com, featuring links to all of his publications and photographs of his fabulous handlebar mustacheChickering & Gamson's Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education: Resource guide from the University of FloridaCoLab Podcast Episode 7- Universal Design for LearningEditors: Megan Hamilton Giebert, Lorrie Weldon, and LaToya Hinton (March, 2023)

This month our podcast episode features two of our Men's Equip Leaders, Tom Tobin and JB Clarkson. Journey with them as they explore the second half of the Gospel of Matthew, and how it furthers our understanding of God's story of redemption."The book of Matthew begins and ends with the present reality of Immanuel, God with Us. It is bookended first with the infant Jesus arriving on the scene, and then closes with the resurrected Jesus declaring that He would be with us always till the end of the age. As we look at the life of Jesus between these two bookends, we get to see multiple portraits of our King, that really help us to flesh out the question, "Who is this Jesus?" When Felipe Espinosa and younger brother Vivian were feeling bloody, the bodies were sure to follow. And in the spring and summer of 1863, there was certainly no shortage of bodies. Some victims were shot at long distances while others were casualties of more close-in work with blade or axe. And most were mutilated; beheaded, disemboweled, desecrated or otherwise molested. After several failed attempts, the U.S. Army finally hired half-breed mountain man Tom Tobin to hunt down Felipe Espinosa. Tobin had been out west since he was a 14-year-old and had a unique set of skills that made him invaluable when it came to being a manhunter. Who were the Bloody Espinosa brothers? Welcome to Episode 60 of the Think UDL podcast: Researching Accidental UDL with Kirsten Behling. Kirsten Behling is the author, along with Tom Tobin, of Reach Everyone, Teach Everyone: UDL in Higher Education, which is the book I recommend most to anyone who is interested in UDL in higher ed. She is also the Associate Dean of StAAR which stands for Student Accessibility and Academic Resources at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. In today's podcast, Kirsten and I discuss the research project she has undertaken since the pandemic began when university classes switched to a predominantly online format. Along with her co-researchers Kate Pillette, a School Psychologist and Learning Specialist at Tufts University, and Lisa Bibeau, the Assistant Dean for Disability Services at Salem State. Kirsten has been looking for and has found many examples of instructors implementing Universal Design for Learning principles in their rapid switch to online, and she has asked instructors to reflect on their teaching during this time. Through this, she has uncovered what she calls “Accidental UDL” when instructors have implemented strategies that have proved helpful, accessible, clear, and perhaps altogether revolutionary in the midst of this transition that, whether they knew it or not initially, incorporated or exemplified Universal Design for Learning principles. What a great idea to highlight the bright spots during a particularly trying time for college teaching! Kirsten has graciously provided a chart resource and her article “Finding a silver lining in the rapid movement to online learning: Considerations of access for all learners” if you'd like to know more or if you are interested in trying to do something like this on your campus. You'll find both the chart and article on the ThinkUDL.org webpage under Episode 60's resources. Thank you for joining me in this conversation today with Kirsten Behling on Accidental UDL!

Healthcare is complicated. We talk about trying to rebuild it, make a more patient-centric environment, do more with value based care, improve outcomes, make sustainable business, get to a world of interoperability...and more. With all of those conversations going on, we decided it would be good to step back and look at the macro view of the current healthcare landscape today. Money and politics ultimately dictate a lot of where we can go with so much of what we talk about on the podcast, from health entrepreneurship to healthcare technology to how the healthcare system can better engage patients and improve outcomes. Here, Emily Evans and Tom Tobin of Hedgeye Risk Management give an overview of the current healthcare policy and economics to help us understand what we're up against.
With five weeks left before the Florida legislative session ends, reporter Jeff Solochek and editor Tom Tobin explore a bill aimed at tighter turnarounds for troubled schools, a big disagreement over property taxes and a local mixup that has some people talking about whether we still need to have valedictorians and salutatorians.
