It has been a while since Tuesday Topics looked at artificial intelligence. We know that it is becoming more and more crucial for people who are blind. Meta glasses, copilot, and new components on new iPhones are just some of the changes that are happening. Blind Information Technology Specialists are sponsoring a three day training program in Dallas at our convention. Jeff Bishop, BITS President, will be with us to tell us about that and other AI activities. What has changed in the last year? How are people liking the new versions of the meta glasses? How do people feel about the other new glasses that are becoming available? How effective is AI at making what we do better and what can we expect in the future? These are just some of the questions we will explore as Tuesday topics once more focuses on artificial intelligence! There is a new book that has just been released by the National Braille Press concerning using AI. It is written by Judy Dixon who is, on Tuesday, on her way to Germany. She is expecting to join us for part of our show from the airport. Find out more at https://acb-tuesday-topics.pinecast.co

We encourage folks to suggest ideas for Tuesday Topics and have, in the past, used some of those that we have received. This week we are once again availing ourselves of a suggestion made by two ladies who both happen to have similar names. Both Debbie (Hazelton) and debbee (Armstrong) have suggested we take up a topic that we think is very important. Both of them will be a part of our panel either the deb duo or the double Debby or the larger than little Debby program. Their suggestion and our topic involves technology. They ask why many people who are blind seem to be technologically challenged? Are they technophobic? What can we do about it? There are other people who are blind who seem amazingly tech-savvy! Is there a reason? Clearly there are people with no disabilities who are technologically incompetent but there is more at stake for people who are also. If folks who are blind want to work, they must be technologically effective! If they want to avail themselves of the range of options in terms of mobility, literacy or social interaction, technology is just as crucial! The Blind Information Technology Specialists are trying to do some exciting things with technology and we hope that Jeff Bishop will be here to talk about some of them. Whether he is with us or not, we want to explore with you what creates technophobia for people who are blind and what we can and should do about it! Though I have not actually previewed what these ladies will say, I suspect their view is that this "affliction" is treatable and maybe even curable and they will help us explore some of the steps all of us can take to help those who feel challenged by the time we are trying to survive! Ms. Armstrong works at a community college where her job involves making technology available to students with disabilities. Ms. Hazelton is currently teaching sociology at a college in Alabama and has a background in psychology and technology. Jeff, if he can join us, works to make computer technology accessible at a college in Phoenix. Within ACB all three of these folks work in areas where technology is crucial. I think they bring to this issue both experience and insights that I am looking forward to having as a part of our Tuesday Topic. You, our listeners, will have insights as well! Share your tech comfort levels with us! What approaches have you used to become techpetitive?

Jeff Bishop, chief executive officer at RagingBull, says that the market is showing signs of topping out, though he thinks that the building downturn now will likely be short and not too steep before a rally again chases record highs. Bishop notes that "all of the bears have been destroyed," so there are few investors betting against the market, which is typically a sign that trouble is ahead. Bishop notes that those bearish investors were tired of their losses, and that betting against the market now would be risky, but he says there is more downside risk than potential upside right now. Sam Millette, senior investment strategist at Commonwealth Financial Network, says that as the market adjusts to the Federal Reserve delaying rate cuts as long as possible, it will set up the market for a better second half of the year. Stephen Minar, head of closed-end funds at BlackRock, discusses how discounts drive money flows into closed-end funds, but they also attract activist investors whose actions may be harmful to others. BlackRock has created some initiatives to fight back, reducing discounts but hoping to increase a closed-end fund's consistency. And in the Market Call, David Brady of Brady Investment Counsel returns, and is the only guest who tackles the ticker list by simply addressing the first five names on it.

In this episode, I'm joined by Jeff Bishop, the President of Blind Information Technology Specialists (BITS). We discuss the accomplishments of BITS as an organization and their mission to promote accessibility and education in the field of technology for the blind and low vision community. Last year, under Jeff's leadership, BITS saw significant growth in their membership, reaching over 650 members. They have also formed partnerships with organizations like Numis Solutions and Bookshare to provide additional resources and opportunities to their members. Jeff highlights the importance of collaboration and partnering with others to achieve success. He shares that BITS has started offering Python training courses and is exploring other areas of training, such as office training, web accessibility, and web development. Jeff also expresses his vision of bringing modern web capability to the organization and sharing it with the broader community. The conversation shifts towards employment opportunities, with Jeff mentioning the idea of bringing employers and organizations to interact with BITS members for potential job opportunities. The importance of networking and creating connections within the community is emphasized. Jeff also discusses the communication strategies employed by BITS, mentioning the introduction of topic-based email lists and the implementation of a Discord server for text and voice chats. The organization is actively seeking feedback and making adaptations to ensure effective communication and scalability. Towards the end of the conversation, I extend an invitation to join BITS, highlighting the benefits of membership, such as access to training courses and networking opportunities. I also suggest the Copilot Pro tool from Microsoft and discuss my struggle with learning to use certain technologies for office tasks. One of the joys of being a part of the American Council of the Blind is that, in addition to having state affiliates as members, the organization has welcomed the formation of more than a score of organizations formed based on an interest or a set of skills. Over the past couple of months there is no question that the affiliate most often garnering our attention was BITS. Blind Information Technology Specialists has been around since the early 1980s but, in its earlier history, it was a group that was mostly interested in welcoming computer programmers. Some years ago the organization changed its name and became much more open to having others join its ranks. Over the past six months or so, the President of BITS has been Jeff Bishop. He has a long history of service to ACB. He has been a Board member. He currently serves on the Board of Publications. He has been a leader in the effort to expand ACB Media is the host of ACB'S "main menu" program. Jeff will be joining Tuesday Topics partly to tell us about three initiatives that BITS is making that will certainly positively impact ACB and its members. I have no intention of talking about any of them here. There have been announcements but I want you to hear from Jeff not just what they are but why they are being offered. Perhaps these new initiatives will alter the way that special interest affiliates operate to get new members. Perhaps the approach will have lots of long term consequences for ACB that we can't even foresee yet. Interesting though it will be to talk about BITS, we at Tuesday Topics indicated to Jeff that we wanted more from him. He has worked at Microsoft and is probably among the most knowledgeable people we know with regard to access technology. So we thought we would ask him about the current state of tech for people who are blind! We will probably also ask him to look ahead to explore with us what the consequences of the AI revolution might be for folks who are blind. As we explore the organization, BITS, and the knowledge that Jeff brings to the table, we will, I hope, also get a chance to explore who Jeff Bishop is. Where did he grow up? What are his interests and passions? What made him leave Microsoft? We are looking forward to a chance to showcase BITS, access technology and Jeff Bishop next Tuesday. Axel Merk, president and chief investment officer of the Merk Funds and Merk Investments, says that "higher for longer is not a strategy," which means that the Federal Reserve is setting up investors for a longer-lasting fallout than investors expect now. As a result, Merk says that the downside risk of the market right now is much greater than the upside potential now. Jeff Bishop of Raging Bull and Bullseye Trades sees the market as taking a small setback before the start of a Santa Claus rally that carries into the New Year, portending a strong year ahead for the market in 2024. Plus, Mike Taggart, closed-end fund specialist at Aberdeen, says that discounts in closed-end funds are "overplayed," and that investors who focus instead on income will likely be happier with the long-term outcome from their investments, and Patrick Healey, president of Caliber Financial Partners, talks stocks in the Market Call.

Read transcriptEpisode Notes In this episode of the iACast podcast, we have a group of hosts including Jeff Bishop, Marty Sobo, Lynn Schneider, Taylor Arndt and Michael Doise. We start by discussing our excitement for the upcoming Apple event and the release of new iPhones. We express differing opinions on whether we prefer the software or hardware announcements and mention the prevalence of rumors before Apple events. We then move on to discuss our hopes for what we would like to see on the new devices, including the possibility of a "one more thing" announcement. Next, we decide to discuss non-iPhone topics first before diving into AirPods and the rumors of a USB-C case. We express our desire for a single cable to charge all our devices and discuss the possibility of waiting for the next generation of AirPods Pro. We propose the idea of buying just the case for the original AirPods Pro 2 that we already own and consider the environmental impact of releasing a new case with USB-C. Moving on, we talk about the potential release of AirPods 4 and discuss the features we would like to see, such as volume control and better transparency. We also speculate whether the new U2 chip will be included in the AirPod 4s or the iPhone 15/16. We mention the possibility of AirPods being able to unlock devices and discuss the potential for health-related features like temperature monitoring. We anticipate that there will be a focus on vision-related technologies and discuss the potential release of new iMacs and a new M3 chip for Macs. We debate whether a separate Mac event will be held in October and consider the possibility of an ultra version of a product. In the next part of the conversation, we shift our focus to the upcoming Apple Watch release. We express our hope for blood glucose monitoring to be included in the watch and discuss the lack of significant changes in the watch's performance since the 6th version. We debate whether it's worth upgrading from the 8th version to the 9th and mention the possibility of adding a button for assigning tasks or apps on the regular versions of the watch. We briefly touch on the iPhone and express our desire for longer battery life. We conclude the discussion by mentioning the upcoming Tuesday release and pondering how much money Apple will make us spend. We briefly touch on skipped iPhone models and discuss the iPhone X as the best one ever made. We briefly mention the increasing prices of iPhones and move on to discuss iOS and the possibility of changes in the HomePod. We don't expect Apple to release any new hardware for the HomePod mini but anticipate new software and added capabilities. We describe the round shape of the mini HomePods and mention their ability to be paired. We note that Siri only speaks out of one speaker when paired. We discuss the better audio quality of the mini HomePods for movies compared to TV speakers. We also mention the possibility of a journaling app in iOS 17.1 and new Mac software releases. Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group, says the first-half upside surprise from the stock market and economy has positioned the market for a big second half of the year. Detrick says that when the market posts double-digit gains in the first half of the year, historically it has added another 10 percent in the second half; he's forecasting for this year to continue the trend, with the Standard and Poor's 500 projected to gain 21 to 25 percent for the year, a prediction that's way up from the 12 to 15 percent gains he was calling for '23 when he made his annual forecast at the end of last year. Detrick's bullish view was echoed -- albeit for different and more technical reasons -- by Jeff Bishop, chief executive at RagingBull.com, who says the market is no longer range-bound, having broken out to the upside and with most technical indicators suggesting it could get all the way up to all-time high levels before the year is done. Also on the show, securities attorney Kenneth Burdon of Skadden Arps says that rules proposed by the Securities and Exchange Commission would dramatically change liquidity requirements on traditional mutual funds, resulting in a boom for interval funds, and Vern Sumnicht of iSectors.com talks ETFs in the Market Call.
In the spring of 2016, Jeff Bishop was developing wind projects when he came across an analyst chart that caught his eye.Battery storage, the analysts forecasted, would follow a similar cost curve as solar. Costs would plummet as deployment ramped up to support a grid ever more dependent on intermittent renewable energy resources.Bishop quit his job by the summer and launched Key Capture Energy, a developer, owner, and operator of grid-scale battery storage projects.Turns out, the analysts were right. Seven years later, battery storage deployment is booming. But the industry is still finding its way. Developers and regulators face questions about how to best use batteries, and what policy structures are needed to facilitate deployment. Moreover, the industry is learning on the fly about how these assets will perform under various state and utility demands.Bishop joined Episode 50 of the Factor This! podcast to break down how states should, and shouldn't, go about procuring battery storage, and why software is a crucial piece of the puzzle. Plus, stick around for the inside story of how Key Capture went from the brink of insolvency to raising $100 million. After a year of producing Factor This, we want to hear from you. Cheryl Smith, economist and portfolio manager at Trillium Asset Management, says the current rally is not a sign of a new bull market, but rather proof that the effects of the Federal Reserve's rate hikes haven't really had much impact on the economy yet. She expects labor market softness to increase, layoffs to start and unemployment to rise, with the Fed not pulling back on interest rates until 2024, and while investors are waiting for that pivot they are likely to feel the effects of a hard landing for the economy. Smith's short and intermediate take -- dramatically different than other experts in the Big Interview this week --- said that while she can't say the forecast for the next year is particularly positive, she believes the returns for the next five years will be in line with historic norms. Jeff Bishop, chief executive at RagingBull.com, says that the technical indicators are all looking good, but he's wary of the fundamentals and while that caution has him leaning to the bearish side, the market's current trend is bullish enough that investors should be buying the dips now. In The NAVigator segment, Michael Beth, director of trading at WallachBeth Capital, discusses the challenges posed by liquidity issues that can cost closed-end fund investors real money when it comes to making trades efficiently. PLUS, Chuck talks about a sure-thing financial bet that's based on something investors will be watching at this weekend's Super Bowl.

Jeff has been blind since birth and has dedicated his career to building experiences that empower people who are blind. And over the past few years, Jeff has led the way in making Narrator easier and more delightful to use. As he tells it: As a screen reader user myself, I truly understood the need for some changes to Narrator's voice. Listening to that voice all day while working, reading an article or book, or just surfing the web on the sofa – it needs to be a delightful experience. To develop the new natural sounding voices for Narrator – “Aria,” “Guy” and “Jenny” – we had to figure out what made a voice “great” for a screen reader user. I spent considerable time with our engineering team to improve responsiveness and other characteristics of the voices, and we tested and gathered tons of feedback to ensure they met my needs as a user and for the needs of all screen reader users around the world. Drawing on his own lived experience and feedback from the community, Jeff helped bring new natural sounding voices to Narrator. These new voices use state-of-the-art text-to-speech that more closely mirror natural speech, making everything from browsing the web to reading and authoring documents more enjoyable for users who listen to their screens rather than looking at them.

Every trader is going to see losses. No one is successful 100% of the time. One day, when you realize that losses are a big part of trading, you will finally learn how to plan for those losses early…you plan where your “Stop” is going to be, before you even take a trade. When you learn to do this, it's very freeing, and you gain a level of comfort when you know you aren't in over your head in trades. GOLD I own gold for the long term. I have physical gold. I'll always own gold. I'm a big believer in having it as an asset. This is probably a great time to buy too, as it is closely linked to the dollar. Right now the dollar is very extended against the Euro and other currencies. When the dollar pulls back and other currencies strengthen, gold will rally again. CryptocurrencyI don't actually hold any because for me the verdict is still out. I do, however, think that crypto is here to stay and will be a big part of our lives in a few years down the road. Our best bet would probably be dollar cost averaging with the bigger blue chip crypto names like Bitcoin, Etherium, etc. Just start scaling in…low priced, high priced…so that you get a good average price over the course of the next several years. Jeff Bishop, chief executive officer at RagingBull.com, says he that the market has rallied to a point where he is looking to take money off the table on the upside and starting to get short anticipating that areas like technology that have rallied the most off the lows are due for a fall as the current bear market rally starts to falter. Bishop acknowledges that he might be early, but he'd rather be ahead of the rally ending than riding it down. Also on the show, Roxanna Islam, associate director of research at VettaFi, discusses the construction of indexes of closed-end funds and the benefits to using them over individual issues, Milind Mehere, chief executive officer at Yieldstreet, discusses the current state of the U.S. housing market, and Juan Pablo Villamarin, senior investment analyst at Intercontinental Wealth Advisors, talks stocks in the Market Call.
