Prison ministry can be one of the most challenging, and most rewarding types of ministry. And there are unique issues with this calling. My guest today is Randall Ham, who has years of experience with ministering to incarcerated men.Randall Ham is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and former Marine Drill Instructor, who is passionate about ministering to incarcerated men through the Kairos Prison Ministry organization. He has also served as a member of his city's governmental body, worked in various volunteer organizations, and is an active member of his church. He resides in Alabama with his wife Lisa. Questions Answered: ·         How did you end up with a passion for ministering to incarcerated men?·         What stereotype of prisoners do we need to change?·         What does redemption look like for a man who is in prison for life?·         Are there men who are in prison for life, but who feel like they are free?·         Does Paul's writing hit differently for men who are in prison?·         Can you share a story of an incarcerated man who has had his life changed by ministry?·         How should victims and family members of victims think about these topics?·         What is it like being friends with men who have committed serious crimes?·         How does someone get involved in prison ministry?·         How does doing this work change a person?·         Why does it seem that an incarcerated man can surrender to God easier than a man on the outside?·         How do incarcerated men deal with the concept of coming to church as they are?·         Did Jesus instruct us to visit men in prison and minister to them?·         How can people help if they don't want to go inside the actual prison?  Important Links:https://kairosprisonministry.org/ https://SignificantMan.com

We're pulling back the curtain and taking you on a deep dive into the heart and soul of The Straight Outta Prison Podcast, Season 2. Picture this: 23 hours of riveting and thought-provoking conversations, akin to a binge-worthy Netflix series. We've been told it's like that by our friend Robert, who marathon-listened his way through our podcast. Season 2 was a journey of healing, clarity, and renewed optimism. However, we also grappled with the struggles of walking in faith, and the challenge of recognizing the larger picture when you're in the thick of things. An exciting part of our podcast is interacting with our patrons. We appreciate their support through Patreon and are eager to answer their intriguing questions. We also discuss our second podcast, the For Real Real. But it's not all light-hearted and fun. We confront daunting topics such as the violence and overcrowding in Alabama's Department of Corrections, and the power of storytelling through Biblical characters. We also delve into the paradox of Jesus' simplicity and the difficulty in surrendering to it. As we move towards the exciting frontier of Season 3, we reminisce about the infamous case of Jason Culverhouse, convicted of murdering his own family, and his life-altering encounter with Jesus. We remember the people we met in prison, their stories of recidivism and their current journeys. We also touch upon Kairos Prison Ministry, a three-day prison program where I've been honored to share my experiences. As we buckle up for Season 3, we can't contain our excitement for the new chapter and the exclusive content we have in store. So, join us for this enlightening and stirring journey. The book I recently read and reviewed in our last episode - ‘Finding the Right Hills to Die On' by Gavin Ortlund - has a certain ‘How To Guide to Ecumenism' feel to it throughout. As I think about ecumenism, an awareness dawns on me how much of it has marked my own Christian life as a 35-year-old American. My father was raised Mennonite, my mother attended Pensacola Christian and Bob Jones University. They both met at Cedarville University. In high school, my part-time job was at the Highland County Family YMCA in Hillsboro, Ohio. I also attended the ‘One Way' non-denominational Bible Study. What's more, First Baptist Church of Hillsboro, Ohio - where Lauren and I met, and she grew up, held joint-services with many of the other churches in town, irrespective of denomination, for Christmas Eve every year. Before moving back to Montana in 2012, I occasionally listened to K-Love for years. But come to think of it, pretty much any Contemporary Christian Music is like this. Stripped of most lyrical particulars which might aggravate doctrinal differences between denominations, the mass market appeal is also a kind of ecumenism. After we left FBC, Lauren and I attended Good News Gathering in Hillsboro, Ohio. Though affiliated with Willow Creek on some level, the church nevertheless emphasized sticking to the gospel and being seeker-friendly. I also participated in Kairos Prison Ministry in Southern Ohio once. The volunteers - clergy and laymen - hailed from diverse denominations. The point was to focus on the gospel, and primarily to make converts among residents of correctional institutes and prisons so as to make them Christians without stressing a certain tradition or confusing anyone with in-depth theology and doctrinal concerns. When we moved to Eastern Montana, we attended CMA churches in Glendive, Savage, and Sidney. At the root, the CMA sets aside many historical denominational distinctions in favor of the making disciples of all nations, preaching the gospel all over the world. Besides this, I have encountered more and more in recent years the increasing influence of The Gospel Coalition seemingly everywhere online, with it seeming to be the preferred resource for weblink shares from pastor friends and family members of mine all over the U.S. Yet all of this brings me to a question that came up in reading Gavin Ortlund's 'Finding the Right Hills to Die On' this past week, and in reading so much on theology and church history the past year. The more I study both Church History as well as Modern History, the more unusual, superficial, and disproportionate the ideal of Unity as it's been presented seems in comparison to the level of depth to discussion and debate which seems to have marked the faith and practice of the Church the past two millennia. All over the U.S., the more in-depth the study and subsequent discussion, the harder the pushback seems to be to embrace a kind of latent liberalism which is called humility and peace in the interest of the core gospel message. And yet the more peace and unity with liberalism is stressed, on liberalism's terms, the less recognizable many examples and ideals of the Bible and the historic Reformation feel. Is this just my imagination, or is there a history to the past century of what we call ecumenical that can explain what forces and influences gave rise to this emphasis today on setting aside disagreements as often as possible in favor of ready agreement and a forgoing of more rigorous researching? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

I've been friends with Tony Keely for 20+ years and we've learned a great deal from one another. This is an interview we taped before the whole CV19 mess started and I had to edit out a few references to events that were in the past and now irrelevant. Also I have an essay I wrote while part of the Kairos Prison Ministry and it's a Christmas letter to my departed father. With that in mind, enjoy.

Jim Lambert, the author of Sub Rosa and Other Short Stories, discusses his creative foray into the genre of short storytelling. This book is a great choice for a Christmas gift or a gift to yourself if you want to dig deep and learn more about Louisiana history. As a successful attorney, Jim has built a lifetime experience of telling his clients' stories through writing briefs for the court; but he was always constrained by the facts! His heart is exemplified by his involvement in Kairos Prison Ministry on Death Row at Angola. In his current quest to blend the facts surrounding actual historical characters with intriguing stories of fictional marginalized characters, he has been able to start within his own mind, get in touch with his creative spirit, and has hit the mark with compelling stories that pull you in to read more. (Sort of how Netflix pulls you in within six seconds to watch the next episode!) Jim thinks short stories should be the dominant literary genre for today's times. He's always loved reading short stories and in retirement, he has hit the mark in taking his creativity to a new level that we can all enjoy, no matter how busy we are. Many years ago he read a book about Frank Lloyd Wright, by T. C. Boyles, "The Women," which was told from the point of one of Lloyd's graduate students recounting the life of a talented but complicated man. It inspired Jim to use real people and speak from the vantage point of a fictional character. One of his stories in the book focuses on Lee Harvey Oswald, as a 14-year-old young man who grew up in New Orleans. "Lee and Me," is told from the fictional perspective of Oswald who got into a fight and was helped by a classmate. Lee was grateful for the help, and as you read the story you have to wonder what could have become of the young Lee if his life had taken a different turn. Jim Lambert's connection to New Orleans runs deep. He was born in New Orleans and was adopted from a Baptist orphanage. As a young lawyer, he moved back to New Orleans in 1976 and then moved to Lafayette in 1978, where he has kept a home ever since. Many of his stories are steeped in New Orleans culture in a manner that only a native could share. Each chapter in Sub Rosa shares a compelling fictional story of events that happened in Louisiana, such as the following: a young lawyer sent to investigate the murder of Black troops in the Jim Crow South, and a mental patient obsessed with the film Harold and Maude. Dwayne, the protagonist of the opening story, “Blood in My Hair,” is serving a life sentence for unintentionally contributing to the death of a police officer; the prisoner, who's known as “Cowboy,” spent much of his adulthood riding bulls in rodeos, has been craving a similarly perfect, adrenaline-filled moment ever since his incarceration began. In “Find Franny Now,” a woman named Lydia gave up on optimism after her autistic son was diagnosed with brain cancer and her husband subsequently left her; her general lack of hopefulness extends to Franny, the titular missing teenage girl, who Lydia believes has no chance of ever being found. In each story, Lambert reveals the humor and tragedy running through the lives of these unique human beings. Jim shared during the interview of his childhood growing up in Alexandria and how the "Lost Cause" permeated his community and affected the way people grew up understanding the world. He would come to understand how actual riots and killings that occurred were never shared in the history books. As an example, rumors of a race riot during WWII on January 10, 1942 in Alexandria that resulted in 18 or 19 black troops being killed were smoothed over by reports shared by the U. S. Govt. after Pearl Harbor. This knowledge deeply impacted Jim's understanding of how events are officially documented by official government reports and how historical events can be skewed. Jim recommends "The Sky is Gray,
