In this week's episode of Every Rockie Ever, Skyler and Dustin convened on a snow day to chat former players that currently work as coaches in the Rockies system. Recently, the Rockies hired former catcher Dustin Garneau as the major league bullpen coach. Despite a career that didn't flourish at the plate, Garneau has been known for solid defense and his work as catching coordinator/game planner for the minor league system the past two years presents some hope for the team's young bullpen. They then turn focus to fan favorite and 2018 Wild Card game hero Tony Wolters. Wolters joined the organization as the bench coach for the ACL Rockies in 2024, and the brothers break down his excellent work behind the plate working with pitches, lamenting that his offense never took off, and getting to the root of why he had the nickname Papers. Finally, they close things out mourning what could have been for current Rockies special assistant Scott Oberg. As Oberg was growing into prominence as a reliever, a recurring blood clot issue in his arm forced an early retirement from baseball, robbing both Oberg and fans of the high-quality reliever he was becoming. Still, there are wonderful moments to celebrate, like his role in closing out the 2018 Wild Card victory over the Cubs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
MLB – Major League Baseball – Opening Day 2021 Today Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers, 1:10 p.m. Cosy-FM & 94.9 WSJM 12:50 p.m. Pittsburgh Steelers at Chicago Cubs, 2:20 p.m. Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Angels, 10:05 p.m. MLB – Cubs' Hoyer confident deal with Rizzo will be worked out Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer insists he is confident Anthony Rizzo will remain in Chicago beyond this season even though the star first baseman is cutting off talks on a new contract. Though his preference is to stay with the Cubs, Rizzo set an opening-day deadline for a new agreement. The three-time All-Star said this week he won’t listen to an offer once the season starts unless the proposal is close to what he thinks it should be. Hoyer is “very confident” a deal will get done. He said he respects Rizzo’s decision to limit talks once the season starts Thursday, though the Cubs will remain open to negotiating during the year. MLB – Cubs agree to 1-year deal with backup catcher Wolters The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year deal with catcher Tony Wolters and designated right-hander James Norwood for assignment. Wolters figures to back up Willson Contreras. He signed a minor league deal with Pittsburgh last month and was released on March 29. Wolters is a career .238 hitter with seven home runs and 123 RBIs over five seasons with the Colorado Rockies. Norwood was 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA over 23 relief appearances for Chicago from 2018 to 2020. The Cubs open at home against Pittsburgh on Thursday. MLB – 3 high school teammates become MLB opening day starters Lucas Giolito, Max Fried and Jack Flaherty were teammates nine years ago at Harvard-Westlake, a prestigious prep school in Los Angeles. On Thursday, all three will be opening day starting pitchers in the major leagues. And they didn’t even win a California state title the year they all played together. Giolito will throw the season's first pitch for the Chicago White Sox, Flaherty for the St. Louis Cardinals and Fried for the Atlanta Braves. NCAA – Study: Michigan stands out in academics-based NCAA brackets Michigan stood out in a study that seeded the men's and women's NCAA tournament fields based on academics and diversity. It was the only school to claim a No. 1 seed in both the men's and women's brackets released Wednesday by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at Central Florida. The men's team was crowned the national champion for the second straight year in the study. Gonzaga was crowned the national champion on the women's side. The school's unbeaten team was a No. 2 seed in the bracket as it prepares to play in the Final Four. NCAA – NCAA: Ending daily testing or delaying games not an option With the final weekend of the NCAA Tournament on the horizon, the last thing a team would want is to lose a player to a positive COVID test or even worse having an entire team knocked out by the coronavirus. Those scenarios seem extremely unlikely with only two confirmed positive tests out of the nearly 17,000 administered at the women’s basketball tournament over the first two weeks of the tournament. The last one came nine days ago. NCAA – High court sympathetic to college athletes in NCAA dispute The Supreme Court seems sympathetic to college athletes in a dispute with the NCAA over rules limiting their education-related compensation. The case that was argued on Wednesday isn't about whether students can be paid salaries. Instead, the outcome will help determine whether schools can offer athletes tens of thousands of dollars in education benefits for things such as computers, graduate scholarships, tutoring, study abroad and internships. During the arguments, liberal and conservative justices sounded sympathetic to students. Under current NCAA rules, students cannot be paid, and the scholarship money that colleges can offer is capped at the cost of attending the school.

Spring Training is in full swing. Tatis Jr, DeGrom and Giolito look like they’re ready to start the season. Aaron and Ethan discuss their performances, highlight the starting rotations of the Dodgers, Padres and Mets and spend way too much time talking about Daniel Vogelbach. Ethan also shares his love of defense and Aaron uses Yadier Molina as the example of defense. Finally, we also wish Tony Wolters a better eye at the plate.
After Tyler is done discussing his vaccination we talk about the latest signings of Brian Goodwin and Tony Wolters. We do dive into the differences between Cherington & Huntington's tenure as far as development ideas. Then we wrap up discussing an article of potential future Hall Of Fame players currently in the league.
Tony Wolters also got non-tendered this week. The Colorado Rockies will be without a lynchpin of their clubhouse moving forward. Drew and Patrick remember Wolters' time in Colorado and speculate about what could be next for him and for the club behind the dish.
In this episode of the On The Rox podcast, Denver Post sportswriters Kyle Newman and Patrick Saunders break down the Rockies' decision to non-tender outfielder David Dahl and catcher Tony Wolters. Plus, more analysis on Colorado's hot stove and general manager Jeff Bridich.
The Colorado Rockies non-tendered David Dahl, Tony Wolters, and Chi Chi Gonzalez unleashing a firestorm about Dahl. Who should be held most responsible for this disaster? How bad is it? And where do they, and you, go from here?
The 2020 non-tender deadline has come and gone, and three players found themselves on the outside looking in. The Colorado Rockies did not tender contracts to outfielder David Dahl, catcher Tony Wolters or pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez. Why didn't these three players receive another shot with the club? Julio Urías rebounded after a shaky first inning to hold the Rockies hitless for the remainder of his outing. The Dodgers bats broke the game wide open in the 7th, scoring a season-high 6 runs after Mookie Betts singled in a run, Corey Seager had an RBI double, followed by a two-run double by Will Smith and a wild pitch by Carlos Estevez and a passed ball by Tony Wolters. We break down all of the action in the Dodgers 9-3 win over Colorado, Urías’ gritty performance, Mookie’s MVP caliber season, and more! Ryan Castellani was excellent once again and got just enough help from Trevor Story, Raimel Tapia, and Tony Wolters to power the Colorado Rockies to their first win in a week.
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. Logan Webb started for the Giants, and he pitched beautifully in five-plus innings. The game started off on a bad note, with Donovan Solano making a fielding error that would later come around to score. The Rockies took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but the Giants answered in a big way in the top of the fourth. Mike Yastrzemski led off with a ground ball to shortstop Trevor Story, and he made an error that would prove to be costly. With Yastrzemski on first and one out, Donovan Solano singled to set it up for Brandon Belt, who launched a three-run home run to right field that would give the Giants a lead they would not relinquish.Apparently there was some controversy about Gabe Kapler taking out Logan Webb when he did. Webb had only thrown 60-something pitches through five-plus, but he allowed a leadoff single to Tony Wolters in the bottom of the 6th, which flipped the lineup over for the third time. There is clear evidence that starting pitchers fare worse against lineups the third time through the order, and Webb had just given up a hit to one of the worst hitters in baseball. What's more, a lefty-heavy part of the Rockies lineup was due up. It was absolutely the right call to remove Webb at that point, considering the ballpark, the hit by Wolters, the fact that it was the third time through, and the fact that it was a lefty-heavy part of the lineup. Lefty Caleb Baragar came in and got the Rockies to go down in order. Another non-controversy is also discussed on the show: Kapler's correct decision to go to Tony Watson in the bottom of the 7th even though righty Nolan Arenado was up first. Overall, the Giants' pitching was great last night and the offense, led by Belt, gave them just enough to win by one. Trevor Gott showed great stuff while shutting down the Rockies in the 9th to notch the save.Rock AutoAmazing selection. Reliably low prices. All the parts your car will ever need. Heading down to Arizona for our 4th Inning where we met up with Rockies catcher Tony Wolters. Hear his journey from a drafted short stop to a MLB backstop. We discussed his mental approach to catching and how being an infielder made that transition smooth. Got to hear some really cool insight on how he reacts to get rid of the ball as well as timing triggers for both throwing and hitting. And of course what his Mound Visits entail. Really cool cat to hang with and we know you'll get a ton of insight and information from it. Time to head out to the mound to meet with Tony!
Mark Simon from Sports Info Solutions joins the show to discuss the newly re-calibrated Defensive Runs Saved stat and how it affects all players across baseball including the Rockies. We get into Nolan Arenado vs. Matt Chapman, Trevor Story's ascendance, and the weirdness that is Tony Wolters as a defensive player.Plus, Anthony and Tyler discuss some early spring storylines in Rockies camp and throughout baseball as spring training gets rolling. All that and more is on this week's episode of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast. Punch it into your TI-83 graphing calculator and see what ya get.
In the first episode of Roarin' Rockies, we will be talking about the Nolan Arenado situation the Rockies are in. Be sure to stay tuned until the end for a very bold prediction made by B-Talks. Also in the middle of the recording, I make a mistake by saying that Tony Wolters was nominated for the Hall of Fame but it was actually Todd Helton. Hey, we all have brain farts sometimes. As well one more thing I once again apologize for the poor audio it will be fixed by Wednesday's episode, the Broncos Weekley. On this episode of the DNVR Rockies Podcast, Drew Creasman breaks down the captivating career of Tony Wolters. He has never had the best offensive numbers but the defense is great. His overall value is difficult to truly measure, though.
On this episode of the DNVR Rockies Podcast, Drew Creasman and Patrick Lyons try to pinpoint what makes for a Gold Glover at catcher and ask whether or not Tony Wolters belongs in that conversation. Then we take a look into some potential modernization of MLB's drug policy.
Rockies catcher Tony Wolters gives his thoughts on who has the second-best mustache and how having a manager who was a pitcher is helping him on the Chatting Cage.
With just about two months left to go in the season, and the trade deadline in the rear view mirror, we talk about what our expectations are for the Rockies the rest of the way. That conversation quickly turns to pitching, specifically Kyle Freeland and Wade Davis. Drew also had a chance to sit down with pitcher Jon Gray, who weighs in on the difference of his game from this season to last season. Jon also opens up about what motivates his these days, and when he realized he had a future in baseball, and not football. We finish off with a conversation about the value of sports psychologists and a quick game of word association. That's where we learn Drew's thoughts on Tony Wolters, Yasiel Puig, and the fact Drew is the only human to have only watched one hour of Star Wars. In this episode of the On The Rox podcast, Denver Post beat writers Kyle Newman and Patrick Saunders discuss a handful of players who have broken through with success in 2019, or re-emerged as pillars for a last-place club that's fallen far short of preseason expectations. Featuring analysis on Scott Oberg, David Dahl, Jon Gray, Tony Wolters and Carlos Estevez.

Where do Eric and Les rank the Broncos newest acquisitions both coaches and players? Tony Wolters discusses the bruising series vs Chicago, and where the Rockies aspirations continue to be. How much better can the Nuggets truly get better this off-season? Eric and Les discuss.
With six wins in the first seven games of a 10-game homestand, your, my, and our Colorado Rockies are back over the .500 mark for the first time since they were 2-1 starting the season in Miami. And the way they've gotten there? It's not...entirely clear. The offense has been good! The pitching has been not so good! But sometimes the pitching has been good and the offense has been not so good! Whatever they're doing, it's working. Since starting 3-12 this season, the Rockies are 25-15, one of the best winning percentages in baseball over that span. There are a lot of good things to take away from the last several days of Rockies baseball, and we'll discuss them in such segments as our annual "Is Ian Desmond Finally Fixed?" segment along with "Ryan McMahon: Dreamy and Good" and "Tony Wolters, Mirage or Monster?"The Toronto Blue Jays and thiccccc Vladimir Guerrero Jr. arrive at Coors Field tonight. We'll talk about how Tulo was once a member of that team and apparently came back to Denver for an interleague series with the Blue Jays in 2016 that we completely forgot about. We'll also dive into your #AskPDP questions which include a discussion of how the Rockies were paying Mike Hampton until December of last year (!) and how Mike Hampton was evidently still in the big leagues as of 2010. There's actually way too much Mike Hampton discussion in here for a Colorado Rockies podcast in 2019. Just the #content you #crave.
Luke Zahlmann breaks down the case for Tony Wolters in the 2019 MLB All-Star Game and who his leading competition is currently in the National League. Topics also include an in-depth look at the current campaign for Wolters and what's wrong with Daniel Murphy following his return from injury.
For the first time this season, we bring you an episode of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast with your, my, and our Colorado Rockies on a winning streak. After literally the worst start in franchise history, the Rockies have now won three games in a row and return home playing their best ball of the young season. Nolan Arenado is finally getting his bat going, belting homers over his last three games, and dudes like German Marquez are stepping up with huge performances. Better late than never, right? On this week's show, we'll dive into some of the positives of the last few games including Nolan's performances, Garrett Hampson and Raimel Tapia finding traction, and a decent early season showing from Tony Wolters both at the plate and behind it. We'll also discuss some of the things that are still a bit concerning with this Rockies club from Charlie Blackmon's struggles to Kyle Freeland's issues through his last three outings.Plus, a brief conversation about the new baseballs at Triple-A and how they're influencing numbers across the highest level of the minors. All that and more is on this week's episode of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast! Add it to your next tank of gas for cleaner engine performance!
For the first time in the PDP Era, as all things are and should be measured, the Rockies are on to a real postseason series, and what a way to get here. Kyle Freeland starred for 6 2/3 innings, Tony Wolters (!) (!!!) (Tony Wolters!) came through with a two-out, go-ahead single in the top of the 13th, and the Rockies took down the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley Field to punch their tickets to the National League Division Series. We look back at an absolutely insane game, some of its most crucial moments, some of its most pivotal decisions, and just how the Rockies made the impossible happen. Kyle Freeland announced his status as the Rockies' emotional rock with his dominant performance, but for the Denver kid and his childhood team, it meant more than even that. We'll discuss. Plus, just how and why did Nolan Arenado and Javier Baez end up hugging at third base?! (Aaaaaadorable.)With the win, the Rockies move on to play more meaningful baseball in 2018. The Milwaukee Brewers finished the season with the best record in the National League, including wins in five of their seven matchups with the Rockies. What does that mean heading into the best-of-5 series? It's Antonio Senzatela in Game 1 followed by Tyler Anderson in Game 2. Presumably German Marquez and Freeland will get nods in some order in Games 3 and 4. What will the rest of the staff look like?Plus there's just some general elation and babbling and honestly we blacked out from happiness for most of it, so who knows what else is in there. It's the 151st episode (and first playoff edition) of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast! Frame it and hang it above your fireplace!
As Vin Scully would say, not a bad opening act for the post season. Tony Wolters becomes the hero and demonstrates why baseball is so wonderful in creating unlikely immortals. Meanwhile Cub fans will take comfort that hurtful losses like this no longer have the baggage of the Cursed Days of the team.
The Colorado Rockies catcher discusses the huge game at Coors Field this afternoon and himself watching this team mature over the season.
Ben and Darius break down the very exciting news of MLB regular season games coming to the UK in 2019 and 2020, before brainstorming ideas for the UK Night being held on August 16th by Official Minor League Affiliate of the UK, the Erie Seawolves. They then move onto the trade deadline, including the dramatic Yu Darvish trade, whether the Dodgers are invincible, if the Royals were right to buy rather than sell, and what on earth the Orioles were doing. A Crap Catcher update follows, with Jett Bandy moving John ever closer to having to write about the Blue Jays for a year. Finally, they ponder a listener question about which footballers they'd most like to see on a baseball field.
Rockies manager Bud Black and catcher Tony Wolters discuss the team's 8-5 loss to the Padres
4/16/17: Nolan Arenado went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Antonio Senzatela threw seven quality innings to lead the Rockies. Bud Black and Tony Wolters discuss the team's 4-3 victory in the rain over the Giants.
What was it like when Tony Wolters hit his first career home run? Which pitcher on the Colorado Rockies does it hurt the most to catch? Find out the answers to these questions and more when the Rockies catcher steps into the Chatting Cage.
Hear from Rockies superfan Mile High Mohawk, who was honored in Scottsdale this week for being the Colorado Rockies fan of the year. Rockies catcher Tony Wolters joins the podcast to discuss how his spring is going, how he's made the transition behind the plate and how the team has dealt with injuries this spring.
