On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the state of the San Francisco Giants' pitching staff. Logan Webb emerged as an ace in 2021 and in the postseason, and he is under club control for four more seasons, but the rest of the starting rotation is a great unknown. Ben expects Kevin Gausman to be re-signed on a multiyear deal in excess of $100M, and he also expects one of Anthony DeSclafani or Alex Wood to be retained. However, that would still leave San Francisco with two open spots in the starting rotation, and of course it takes more than just five starters to get through a season these days. Ben discusses some possible solutions on the free agent market, from top shelf options like Max Scherzer and Robbie Ray, to pitchers looking for pillow contracts like Noah Syndergaard and Justin Verlander. Also discussed on today's show is the state of the Giants' quietly excellent bullpen. They led the majors in bullpen ERA in 2021, and only Tony Watson is set to reach free agency. The Giants have years of control and roster flexibility in their 'pen, which is an enviable position to be in. Camilo Doval and Kervin Castro have many years of control and are optionable if necessary, and under-the-radar guys like Tyler Rogers, Jake McGee, and Jarlín García are good and retainable as well.Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTubeBONUS CONTENT https://bit.ly/BenKaspickYouTube Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. There's a lot to look forward to, as it's finally time for the Los Angeles Angels to "Let the kids play!" The arrival of Reid Detmers, Chris Rodriguez, Brandon Marsh, and Jo Adell has added some excitement around our favorite team, and the Halo Bros. dive into each of their performances so far. With one of the craziest MLB Trade Deadlines we've ever seen, how did GM Perry Minasian do in his first year at the helm? The Angels sent Andrew Heaney to the New York Yankees and Tony Watson to the San Francisco Giants and netted a nice return, so what do Mike and Jon think of the players we got back? Plus, Raisel Iglesias and Alex Cobb are staying; will they be extension candidates? With the youngsters coming up and playing the outfield, the brothers discuss a move for Mike Trout to the corner outfield and address the conversation around Shohei Ohtani learning to play a position. Then, Mike and Jon share the songs that sum up Joe Maddon's management, the Angels lineup, bullpen, and the season in a segment you won't want to miss! On today's Locked On Giants podcast, Ben Kaspick discusses the Giants' upcoming offseason and its key dates and deadlines. For five days after the World Series ends, the Giants will have exclusive negotiating rights with their own free agents: Kevin Gausman, Drew Smyly, Tony Watson, and Trevor Cahill. Once five days are up, they must have decided whether or not to extend any of their free agents the qualifying offer, valued at one year and $18.9 million. Gausman and Smyly are possibilities to be extended the offer. The player(s) then have 15 days to decide whether or not to accept the offer. Also five days after the World Series ends, the Giants must add six players back to their 40-man roster who were either on the 60-day injured list or the restricted list. That could cause a roster crunch and may force the Giants to make some DFAs. They will have five catchers on the 40-man at that point in time, so a catcher may be designated. As we move into late November, the Giants must also choose which prospects to add to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft in early December. They have a few prospects in their Top 30 who are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft and will need to be added to the 40-man roster in order to be protected. They'll also have to decide which players eligible for arbitration to be tendered contracts. The Giants have several arbitration eligible players, and a few seem to be non-tender candidates. Those decisions need to be made by December 2nd.Built Bar-Today's episode is brought to you by Built Bar. Go to builtbar.com and use promo code “LOCKEDON,” and you'll get 20% off your next order. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants winning two of three over the weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with one game remaining in the series on Monday evening. The Giants lost a heart breaker on Friday, after failing to score despite having the bases loaded and no outs in the 8th inning when trailing by just one run. Mauricio Dubón tagged up from second base on a shallow fly ball by Alex Dickerson, and Steven Duggar on third base bluffed the tag. Dubón didn't notice in time that Duggar wasn't going, and Dubón was doubled off. The Giants' odds of winning was up to 71% when they had the bases loaded and no outs, and those odds fell to 30% after the double play. The Giants did not score again and lost the game by one run.On Saturday, the Giants took care of their former ace Madison Bumgarner. Evan Longoria and Darin Ruf hit back-to-back homers in the second inning, and the Giants added two more runs against the D-backs bullpen in the late innings on back-to-back triples by Joey Bart and Dubón. Those were the first triples in each player's major league career. On Sunday, the starting pitcher Johnny Cueto and the Giants gave up two runs in the top of the first, but answered back with a solo home run by Chadwick Tromp in the third, and escaped bases loaded, two out, full count situations in both the fifth and sixth, the latter being inherited and handled by Caleb Baragar. Ruf made a nice catch to save the day, and WIlmer Flores and Alex Dickerson also made really nice defensive plays that were important in the game. Donovan Solano hit a huge go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, and Brandon Belt continued his torrid stretch by hitting a pinch hit homer in the late innings. The Giants bullpen pitched a shutout, as Baragar, Jarlin Garcia, Tony Watson, and Tyler Rogers closed out the win. The Giants are now just one game under .500 and currently hold the No. 8 postseason seed in the National League. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Giants stand pat at deadline—how slow rental market likely dictated inactivity

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2020 17:16

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the Giants not making any major moves at the 2020 MLB Trade Deadline. After the Giants made five trades on deadline day last year, fans may have expected another flurry of activity for the retooling Giants. But there was no such flurry this year, as the Giants' only trade involved the recently DFA'd left-handed pitcher Anthony Banda, who will report to Sacramento. The Giants' inactivity made a lot of sense, however, for many reasons. First of all, this is an extremely weird season caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Giants figured to be involved in the rental market, potentially trading away short-term assets and seeking to also acquire short-term assets. But the rental market seemed particularly slow this year, with several players who seemed like candidates to be traded staying put. This was likely because teams were simply not willing to give up much of consequence for a player who would only be with them for one month (there's usually two months left after the deadline). Playoff teams also have to make it through a new best-of-three postseason round before advancing to a best-of-five, and there's always the threat that the virus could shut down the season. What's more, some may view this season's champion as illegitimate because of the shortened season. So, at the end of the day, the Giants, who are close to playoff position thanks to the expanded postseason, did not have any reason to "sell" short-term assets like Kevin Gausman and Tony Watson, unless they received substantial offers that likely just did not exist. Likewise, the Giants figured to be active in the short-term buying market (e.g., for players like Jackie Bradley Jr.), but they probably weren't willing to give up much of consequence for 24 games of a simply decent player. All that led to a deadline that had some excitement but was much slower than usual. Ultimately, this was to be expected and that's exactly how it played out. Now the Giants, who won two of three against the D-backs over the weekend, will continue the season with their roster intact, chasing an unlikely spot in the playoffs. Per FanGraphs, their odds of making the postseason stand at 39%. PostmatesFor a limited time, Postmates is giving our listeners ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS of free delivery credit for your first SEVEN days. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. Logan Webb started for the Giants, and he pitched beautifully in five-plus innings. The game started off on a bad note, with Donovan Solano making a fielding error that would later come around to score. The Rockies took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but the Giants answered in a big way in the top of the fourth. Mike Yastrzemski led off with a ground ball to shortstop Trevor Story, and he made an error that would prove to be costly. With Yastrzemski on first and one out, Donovan Solano singled to set it up for Brandon Belt, who launched a three-run home run to right field that would give the Giants a lead they would not relinquish.Apparently there was some controversy about Gabe Kapler taking out Logan Webb when he did. Webb had only thrown 60-something pitches through five-plus, but he allowed a leadoff single to Tony Wolters in the bottom of the 6th, which flipped the lineup over for the third time. There is clear evidence that starting pitchers fare worse against lineups the third time through the order, and Webb had just given up a hit to one of the worst hitters in baseball. What's more, a lefty-heavy part of the Rockies lineup was due up. It was absolutely the right call to remove Webb at that point, considering the ballpark, the hit by Wolters, the fact that it was the third time through, and the fact that it was a lefty-heavy part of the lineup. Lefty Caleb Baragar came in and got the Rockies to go down in order. Another non-controversy is also discussed on the show: Kapler's correct decision to go to Tony Watson in the bottom of the 7th even though righty Nolan Arenado was up first. Overall, the Giants' pitching was great last night and the offense, led by Belt, gave them just enough to win by one. Trevor Gott showed great stuff while shutting down the Rockies in the 9th to notch the save.Rock AutoAmazing selection. Reliably low prices. All the parts your car will ever need. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

On today's Locked On Giants Podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from fans on Twitter. Among the questions answered, Ben talks about when the Giants may (or may not) call up top prospect Joey Bart. The team must wait until July 29 if they want to ensure that Bart won't gain a full year of service time in 2020, which could allow him to reach free agency after the 2025 season as opposed to the 2026 season. However, even if the Giants call up Bart on July 29 or later, if the 2020 season ends up getting cancelled afterwards, it is possible that Bart would be granted a year of service time anyway.Another question asked and answered is about Jeff Samardzija. While his ERA was good in 2019, his peripheral numbers suggest that massive regression could be coming, and this could be an issue as "The Shark" hopes to work as a traditional starter who pitches deep into games. This could cause conflict with new manager Gabe Kapler, who probably won't let a struggling starter eat innings that could be more effectively managed with relief pitcher alternatives. Kapler has expressed a willingness to respect his players' wishes, while balancing an analytical approach. It will be fascinating to watch how it plays out in Samardzija's case.Ben also answers a question about what the Giants are likely to do at this year's trading deadline, which is August 31. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was extremely active at last year's deadline, and fans should expect the same in 2020, assuming the season is still being played. The Giants could have desirable trade pieces in Kevin Gausman and Drew Smyly, in addition to under-the-radar, controllable bullpen arms like Trevor Gott and Tyler Rogers. As Ben explains, bullpen pieces on a retooling team are non-essential, and if those players can be flipped for starting caliber position players or starting pitchers, that may benefit the Giants in the long run. In essence, bullpen arms can help contending teams win in the postseason, but they don't necessarily lead teams to the postseason. Also discussed is the bullpen hierarchy. Although many annointed Tony Watson the heir apparent to Will Smith when he departed in free agency, the Giants may have more talented relievers in Trevor Gott and Tyler Rogers. Rogers's 2019 season was spectacular, and he was looking sharp again in spring training and summer camp. He "opened" a game against the Oakland A's on Tuesday, and it's possible he could do the same on occasion during the regular season. The Giants are likely to go with a bullpen by committee approach at least to start the year, as they don't necessarily have a bunch of established guys in the 'pen. However, that doesn't mean they can't match up and make things difficult on their opponents. cbdMDOur friends at cbdMD have an amazing duo that can help you relax, regroup, and recharge when life gets chaotic. And to make it even easier cbdMD is offering all our listeners 25% OFF your next order when you use the promo code LOCKED ON MLB at checkout.Rock AutoAmazing selection.
