The Cincinnati Reds have five players set to become free agents and the question is will any of them return? Jeff and Steve sort through Hunter Strickland, Chase Anderson, Justin Wilson, Austin Romine, and Donovan Solano to see if any of them will return to the Reds for 2023. The New York Mets made Edwin Diaz the richest relief pitcher in baseball history, would the Reds ever do something like that? Should the Reds do something like that and give a big contract to a relief pitcher? Also, Rice Hinds and Noel Marie played in the Fall Stars Game in Arizona. We take a look at Marie and Hinds, as well as Matt McLain. *SUBSCRIBE* on YouTube and *FOLLOW* the podcast on your favorite app and on Twitter and Instagram @lockedonreds Also follow @jefffcarr and @soffenbaker on Twitter JOIN THE DISCORD SERVER: https://discord.gg/STMcRDyMCt Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The San Francisco Giants' Joc Pederson and Thairo Estrada are Silver Slugger finalists. Pederson had a monster year in a somewhat limited role, given that nearly 90% of his plate appearances came against right-handed pitching. Estrada is a finalist at the utility position, which is a new one for the Silver Slugger Award. Which of these SF Giants players might win, and why? Offensively, Pederson did exactly what the Giants wanted him to do this season. He crushed right-handed pitching. He actually held his own against left-handed pitching as well, but he faced them so little that it doesn't necessarily indicate real improvement. Pederson struggled defensively, and whether he returns to the San Francisco Giants seems to have a lot to do with what his market is. Will he seek a Kyle Schwarber-type deal (4/$79M)? He has a right to want that kind of deal, as Schwarber is a similar player, but whether it's out there remains to be seen. The SF Giants almost certainly give that kind of money to him, since he is a defensively challenged platoon player. Estrada is not a free agent—far from it. The SF Giants still have four years of team control over Estrada, but happily, Estrada is a Super Two this offseason, meaning he will reach arbitration a year early. This means that he will earn far more than the league minimum salary in 2023. MLB Trade Rumors estimates a $2.4 million salary for Thairo Estrada next year. The Giants should be happy to pay it, as Estrada had a breakout campaign and was overall the Giants' best position player. While not a star in any category, Estrada was simply above-average across the board, leading to an above-average 2.7 FanGraphs WAR in 2022. The Giants were right to let Donovan Solano walk in free agency, opening up second base for Estrada. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

SF Giants 2022 Season Preview: Position Players

Are the San Francisco Giants being underrated again? Yes, they lost Buster Posey, Kris Bryant, and Donovan Solano, but this hasn't been a lineup that was totally dependent on anyone. Many are concerned about their lineup against lefties, but they feature some of the game's best hitters vs. LHP over the last couple seasons like Austin Slater, Darin Ruf, and Wilmer Flores. They're not Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Trea Turner (not by a long shot), but somehow, they've been able to produce like them. It's a balanced attack with the SF Giants. They're one of just two teams that's been in the top five in non-pitcher wRC+ vs. both lefties and righties since 2020. Digging deeper into the numbers, 85% of those plate appearances went to players other than Posey, Bryant, and Solano. And Bryant, for what it's worth, actually was a drag on their numbers against lefties in his brief time in San Francisco. People also expected this Giants team to struggle defensively in 2021, but the opposite was true. They were one of the better defensive teams in the league, and their worst defenders are no longer here (Bryant and Alex Dickerson). Bryant combined for minus-8 outs above average at third base and in right field. For seven years and $182 million, he's the Rockies' defensive problem now. Carlos Rodón was an underrated addition, and he and Logan Webb could be legitimate co-aces on one of the best starting staffs in baseball. But their main position player addition was ... Joc Pederson? When stars like Seiya Suzuki, Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, Freddie Freeman, and others were available to sign? And the Giants had so much money coming off the books? Yes, the Giants had a strange offseason. On the one hand, they brought back several key players such as Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford (mid-season extension), Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Wood. They brought in Alex Cobb, who could be a big upgrade at the back of the rotation. They stockpiled pitching depth in the form of Matthew Boyd, Jakob Junis, and Carlos Martinez. But it's hard not to be underwhelmed by simply adding Pederson to a team that lost the likes of Buster Posey, Kris Bryant, and Donovan Solano. They'll probably be fine, but it's understandable that some fans are frustrated. The Giants' payroll looks to be about flat with last year's final payroll of $162 million. They rank 13th in MLB, but they figure to be a good team that has future flexibility (much better than being stuck with bloated contracts and a bad team, which is what Farhan Zaidi took over in 2018) to make additions if they so desire. They're in a good place as 2022 is set to begin on Friday. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

It's a make-or-break month for Mauricio Dubón and Tyler Beede. The San Francisco Giants have several out-of-options players who must perform, or risk being traded or designated for assignment. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: How many of the fringe players without options will make the team? Any trades that you see with the ones that don't make it, or do they just get DFA'd? Thoughts on LaMonte Wade Jr. building off of last year? Or will he come back down to earth in 2022? Why aren't teams signing Michael Conforto? He's coming off one bad year in which the underlying metrics still looked good. He should be willing to accept a short, prove it deal. At this point would you say the Giants are out on him given the Joc Pederson addition? Should we be concerned about the lineup after not much additions during free agency, and the loss of Buster Posey, Kris Bryant, and Donovan Solano? Trevor Story signs with Boston; did the SF Giants do enough this offseason?

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

The Giants' offseason is likely over. Did they do enough to defend their National League West crown? Plenty of fans probably don't think so, and for good reason. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick summarizes the Giants' offseason now that Trevor Story is off the board after signing with the Boston Red Sox. The Giants' pitching staff looks very strong, but their offense appears worse than last year after losing Buster Posey and Kris Bryant. Donovan Solano also departed for the Cincinnati Reds. However, as Ben explains, the Giants' offense was not overly dependent on Posey and Bryant. In fact, their numbers without Bryant, Posey, and Solano in the lineup were not too much worse than their numbers with them. The Giants' strength was in their depth and ability to create favorable matchups on a consistent basis. That should continue in 2022, and addition Joc Pederson fits that mold extremely well. Still, Ben understands how this can be disappointing for fans. He also looks at the Giants' attendance numbers, and how an average of only about 20,000 fans per night in 2021 (and zero in 2020) may be causing the Giants to spend less than anticipated. Compared to selling out every night, half capacity costs the Giants about $85 million per year, according to Forbes. That's more than they make from their television deal in a given year. Hopefully attendance numbers rebound in 2022 and spending can increase as well. If not, it's understandable for fans to be frustrated. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. Tommy La Stella, who received the largest contact handed out by Farhan Zaidi in San Francisco last offseason, had a disappointing first season in San Francisco. He was injured several times, and most recently his left Achilles bothered him down the stretch and kept him out of some key games. He met with a specialist last week, and ultimately ended up having surgery. He is expected to be back at full strength in four months, but you never know with these things. The Giants may need additional insurance at second base, as Donovan Solano is a free agent and their depth chart there currently looks something like Wilmer Flores, Thairo Estrada, Jason Vosler, and Mauricio Dubón. The Giants also suffered a big blow in the world of coaching on Monday. Donnie Ecker, one of the Giants' hitting coaches responsible for turning this team's offense around over the past two seasons, is leaving for the Texas Rangers, where he'll be bench coach and offensive coordinator, in charge of offensive development at the major and minor league levels. Ecker is considered a rising star in the industry, and this moves him one step closer to potentially becoming a manager. But it stings for the Giants, although manager Gabe Kapler is known for constantly keeping tabs on coaches who would be next in line if one of their own departs. This is par for the course for a team that shocked the industry by winning a franchise-record 107 games. Finally, Ben discusses Buster Posey winning his second Comeback Player of the Year Award. It was a tremendous bounceback season for Posey (in part thanks to Ecker, no doubt), after he opted out of the 2020 season and had struggled to below-average offensive performance in 2019. Several Giants veterans enjoyed career years in 2021, thanks to the Giants' new coaches hired by Kapler. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick explores the state of San Francisco Giants position players entering the offseason. He's already spent a few shows discussing who he expects to be back and who he doesn't expect to be back, so today he looks at where things stand assuming that's how things play out. He goes position by position, looking at who currently projects to play, and exploring possible areas for improvement. Tommy La Stella returns, but he may need a new platoon partner with Donovan Solano expected to play elsewhere. Thairo Estrada is out of minor league options and seems like a logical candidate. But Wilmer Flores is expected to be back and could also be a candidate to platoon at second base. Ben expects Brandon Belt to be back, and he would lock down first base. Brandon Crawford is signed for two more years, and the Giants have a club option on Buster Posey. Ben thinks Evan Longoria should have a left-handed platoon partner, but it's hard to find an obvious fit on the free-agent market. He continues to dream about Corey Seager, but it's difficult to envision that dream coming to fruition. In the outfield, Ben imagines that LaMonte Wade Jr. could platoon in left with Darin Ruf. Both are under club control for at least the next two years. Ben does not expect Alex Dickereson to be back. In right field, Mike Yastrzemski and Austin Slater could platoon, with both under club control for three-plus seasons. In center, the Giants have Steven Duggar and Mauricio Dubón, both of whom have several years of club control but are out of minor league options. Ben identifies center as a possible area for improvement, and looks at the likes of Starling Marte, Chris Taylor, and Mark Canha as possible targets. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick names five San Francisco Giants he doesn't expect to be back in 2022. The first is Kris Bryant, which is sure to be a controversial take among Giants fans. While Ben acknowledges that Bryant is a very good player, there are several reasons to think he won't be wearing orange and black in 2022 and beyond. He's likely to have a robust market, and Scott Boras clients often don't sign until late in the offseason. The Giants aren't likely to wait around for Bryant, whose performance with the club was good but not great after he was acquired in a midseason trade. Ben also names Johnny Cueto, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Dickerson, and Donovan Solano as key players he doesn't expect to be back in 2022 for various reasons. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick explores the San Francisco Giants' production in the infield in 2021. Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, and Brandon Belt were absolute studs and had career years. Darin Ruf, Wilmer Flores, and LaMonte Wade Jr. played valuable part-time roles. Evan Longoria was really good until he wasn't. Tommy La Stella had an overall disappointing first year in San Francisco, but it's easy to see why they like him and he will be back for the next two seasons. Donovan Solano came down to earth and is a free agent. Thairo Estrada impressed in limited opportunities, and may take Solano's role next year. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. Kevin Gausman and Donovan Solano provided what may have been the Giants' most magical moments of the season to date. Solano tied the game with a pinch-hit homer with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the 9th. Gausman was forced to pinch hit with the bases loaded and one out in the 11th, and he delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly. The Giants won two of three against the Braves, keeping pace with the Dodgers, who won two of three in Cincinnati. Alex Wood came off the COVID-19 IL to make a start on Saturday, and he was brilliant in three innings of work. Johnny Cueto is progressing well and may make a rehab start this week. The Giants have had multiple bullpen games each week for a while, so Wood and Cueto's returns should help a tired 'pen. The Giants have a one-game lead in the NL West with 12 games to play. Ben discusses the Giants' and Dodgers' remaining schedule, and why a wild card game against the Cardinals should not be what the Giants want to see. Don't give Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt a chance to end your season in a one-game playoff. Alex Wood's COVID-19 illness has hurt the Giants, as they've had to cover two different spots in the rotation with bullpen games. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' statistical rankings in key categories at the All-Star break. The Giants have been one of baseball's best offensive teams, lead by strong seasons from veterans Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, Evan Longoria, and Brandon Belt. But they've also had help, as the likes of Mike Yastrzemski, Darin Ruf, and Steven Duggar have been very good as well. The Giants have also been a great defensive team, with Mike Tauchman, Crawford, and others leading the way, and they've also had surprisingly good defensive performances from Donovan Solano, Wilmer Flores, and pretty much everyone else, with the possible exception of Alex Dickerson in left field. Darin Ruf and LaMonte Wade Jr. have provided positive defensive value filling in for an injured Belt. On the pitching side, the Giants have been very good overall, led by Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, Tyler Rogers, Jake McGee, and Dominic Leone. One area of weakness has been baserunning, but they've more than made up for it by getting on base, hitting for power (the Giants lead the majors in home runs, isolated power, and slugging percentage), defense, and pitching. Given all of the data, it's no surprise that this team has the best record in baseball at the All-Star break. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Among the questions asked and answered are: If Brandon Crawford keeps up his play for the duration of the season, what kind of contract is he looking at? Would the Giants bring him back over Corey Seager/Trevor Story? What’s going to happen when Darin Ruf and Brandon Belt come off the IL? Steven Duggar and LaMonte Wade Jr. are both playing well, but they can’t keep too many left handed outfielders and they won’t cut loose on Mike Tauchman due to him being under team control for the next couple years. Has a team ever signed one of its longest contracts for a player who is a defensive liability and plays the same position as guy who hit .326 & won the Silver Slugger Award? Donovan Solano's track record against RHP is not as strong as Tommy La Stella's but if Crawford's everyday player, isn't Solano? How much longer do the giants keep Tauchman on the roster? He’s had a rough month and besides the amazing catch, has done nothing. What should we make of Curt Casali's struggles, and at what point do you think the Giants will consider cutting him, assuming the performance at the plate remains the same? Some national media still see the Giants as sellers this year with many veterans in the last year of their deal. Do you see the Giants selling for future pieces if they are still in contention for a playoff spot? What's your read on the Cubs in this post-Theo Epstein era? On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that the Giants did what they needed to do in San Diego: win at least one game. While they obviously would have liked to do more, winning a series on the road against a team of the Padres' caliber should be more of a goal rather than the expectation. Behind Kevin Gausman and Mike Tauchman, the Giants won the finale, 7-1, which actually meant they outscored San Diego in the series. The Giants are now 3-3 against the Padres this season, with all six games coming on the road. That shouldn't be viewed as anything other than a win for the Giants. The second thing we learned is that Tommy La Stella is hurt. La Stella pulled his left hamstring on Sunday, and it's a big loss for the Giants, who are already without Donovan Solano at second base, and other key players like Mike Yastrzemski. La Stella will likely head to the IL, further testing the Giants' depth. Ben thinks Jason Vosler will likely be called up and will start at second base against right-handed pitchers. The third thing we learned was that the Giants made some roster moves. Zack Littell was added to the 40-man and active rosters, and Steven Duggar was called up. In corresponding moves, Vosler was optioned and Skye Bolt was DFA'd. We also learned that Buster Posey continues to be a force at the plate, with a refined pre-pitch setup. Now he gets to hit in Colorado, as the Giants will look to win a road series against an inferior Rockies team. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that the Giants are playing like one of the premier teams in the National League. They got three more excellent starts over the weekend, from Alex Wood, Kevin Gausman, and Logan Webb. Their starters now have the second-lowest ERA in the NL. The second thing we learned is that Mike Yastrzemski is hurt, and that's a big blow. He has left oblique tightness, which is a pretty serious baseball injury. The third thing we learned is that there are four banged up infielders, and that the Giants may need to make some roster moves. Brandon Belt (quad), Brandon Crawford (side/ribs), Evan Longoria (hamstring), and Donovan Solano (calf) are dealing with injuries. Does anyone need to go on the IL? If it's Yaz, will Steven Duggar, LaMonte Wade Jr., or even Heliot Ramos get called up? Is there a scenario where it's Thairo Estrada who gets the call? On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' 3-0 win against the Marlins, in which Curt Casali collected his fifth straight shutout when he was the starting catcher. Casali also had a big two-run single in the first inning. The Giants improved to 12-7 with the win, and Casali became just the fifth catcher in MLB history to accomplish the feat. Aaron Sanchez pitched beautifully despite diminished velocity, and Gregory Santos made his major league debut out of the bullpen and was electric. He was added to the roster after Donovan Solano was placed on the IL. Matt Wisler, Tyler Rogers, and Jake McGee pitched scoreless frames as the Giants completed the shutout. Evan Longoria exited this game with left hamstring tightness. Listen to The Ultimate Mock Draft 2021 presented by Audacy and the Locked On Podcast Network.
