Mike shares his story, from being involved in the combat arts, to a job injury that led to addiction, to his redemption story!
Last night, Travis Jankowski hit his first home run of the season, and his first as a member of the Texas Rangers. Last year with the Mets, the speedy Jankowski, who has 82 stolen bases in his career, did not homer in 63 plate appearances, going 9-for-54 with three steals and 11 runs scored. He also didn't homer in his one plate appearance as a Mariner, last having gone deep on June 23, 2021, as a Phillie against Erick Fedde and the Nationals.Jankowski has hit as many as four home runs in a season, as his 2018 season with the Padres included a blast off Félix Hernández. Eight of Jankowski's now 10 career home runs came as a Padre — he didn't go deep in 16 games with the 2020 Reds, but did steal a base for them in the playoffs. The first time Jankowski homered? That was right after a couple in chicken and pig masks appeared on the broadcast of the Padres-Giants game on September 13, 2015.* Travis Jankowski hit his first home run off Mike Leake, 9/13/15* Mike Leake gave up his first home run to Andre Ethier, 4/22/10* Andre Ethier hit his first home run off Dewon Brazelton, 5/3/06* Dewon Brazelton gave up his first home run to Carlos Delgado, 9/13/02* Carlos Delgado hit his first home run off Dennis Cook, 4/4/94* Dennis Cook gave up his first home run to Lonnie Smith, 9/20/88* Lonnie Smith hit his first home run off Larry McWilliams, 7/25/80* Larry McWilliams gave up his first home run to Gary Carter, 7/28/78* Gary Carter hit his first home run off Steve Carlton, 9/28/74* Steve Carlton gave up his first home run to Doug Clemens, 4/19/65* Doug Clemens hit his first home run off Vern Law, 6/30/62* Vern Law gave up his first home run to Del Ennis, 6/11/50* Del Ennis hit his first home run off Claude Passeau, 5/5/46* Claude Passeau gave up his first home run to Mel Ott, 5/11/36* Mel Ott hit his first home run off Hal Carlson, 7/18/27* Hal Carlson gave up his first home run to Fred Merkle, 5/1/18* Fred Merkle hit his first home run off Patsy Flaherty, 6/23/08* Patsy Flaherty gave up his first home run to Jesse Burkett, 4/22/03* Jesse Burkett hit his first home run off Bill Hutchison, 6/23/90* Bill Hutchison gave up his first home run to Jake Beckley, 5/11/89* Jake Beckley hit his first home run off Lev Shreve, 5/6/89* Lev Shreve gave up his first home run to Roger Connor, 8/29/87Roger Connor, the career home run king before Babe Ruth with 138 from 1880-97 with the Troy Trojans, New York Gothams/Giants, Phillies, and St. Louis Browns (Cardinals), connects us to Brett Baty's home run chain. In Psalm 142, the psalmist cries out to God. For example, he says, “I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him” (vs. 2). This is the first lesson of the laments. When we are uncertain, afraid, confused or saddened, we need to come before our Father in heaven. As adopted children, redeemed by the blood of Christ, we are free to come into God’s presence with confidence and know that he will hear us. Not only that, but he delights that we come before him. More often than not though, turning to God with our emotions is not the first thing we do. Instead, we usually try to distract ourselves from painful emotions, pretend they don’t exist or seek to find a temporary savior to our problems. But the laments remind us that God is King. He is our Savior, deliverer and refuge. He alone is our salvation.Cry for help. In Psalm 142, David then cried out to God for help, “Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low! Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me!” (vs. 6). This is another element of the laments—asking God for help. Whether it is help for ourselves, for other brothers and sisters in Christ, for our country or for our world, we need to cry out to God. Like David, we need to seek God’s deliverance and mercy.Speak the truth. The next lesson we can learn from the laments is how the psalmist speaks the truth about who God is. He reminds himself of God’s character and goodness. In verse three, David wrote, “When my spirit faints within me, you know my way!” He reminds himself that God knows all things. In verse five, he refers to God as his refuge, “I cry to you, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.’” As we cry out to God in sorrow or fear about all that is happening around us, we too need to remember who God is and what he has done. He is good and faithful. We need to remember “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will” (Prov. 21:1).Trust in the Lord. Lastly, the psalmist voices a response of trust in the Lord, “Bring me out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name! The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me” (vs. 7). This is the goal of the laments. They move forward from despair to joy, from fear to trust, from loneliness to hope. As the psalmist comes into God’s presence and cries out to the Lord, he remembers who God is and what he has done, and his joy is rekindled. He knows that God rules and reigns over all things. He knows that God’s redemptive hand is at work. He knows that God is good. And so he responds in praise and trust. He doesn’t know when the Lord will deliver him, but he trusts and believes that he will.
0:00-21:55: Podcasting in the age of ‘roni. We’re talking to Michael Ajeto, newest hire at Lookout Landing, about his debut article for the site. Mikey wrote about Justus Sheffield, who was making some changes in Spring Training before they shut down the whole operation. Listen to Mikey break down why Sheffield’s fastball has struggled, what spin rate has to do with it, and how he’s trying to work around these issues. 22:00-42:15: Moving forward (whenever the heck that is), what will it take for Sheffield to be a legitimate MLB starting pitcher? With so much data at our fingertips now, what are good ways to actually evaluate pitchers? Who are some of our favorite pitchers to watch (hypothetically speaking, of course)? The boys reminisce over Mike Leake’s almost perfect game. 42:20-46:55: What stood out in the tiny amount of Spring Training action we saw? Matthew praises the concept of longform content, especially during a time when people are in desperate need of entertainment. 47:00-1:04:00 Mikey walks us through his journey as a Mariners fan. This 2001 game against the Giants gets its first shine on the podcast. When did we realize that nobody has any idea when sports are coming back? Stay strong and stay safe, everyone. Jack and Jeremy take a look at some of the bad boys of baseball - players who've had run-in's with the law. You'll hear about Ugueth Urbina's machete, Mike Leake's t-shirt collection, and why you should never accept a ride to the airport from Jake Peavy. 0:00-21:30: Matthew and Kate are joined by staff member Eric Sanford at Beveridge Place Pub for the most important hour of your entire life. Kate and Eric talk about their approach to Edgar Weekend, which they will both be attending in some capacity. A trenchant discussion on the actual value of winning, and what location is best for that. A dive into prep prospects reveals that baseball players are just recycling names. Eric brags about having children, a job, and cool hats. A motorcycles roars on, and so does the podcast. 21:35-30:00: Logan Gilbert vs. Yadier Molina, the winner may surprise you. We stan the beef boys no matter where they go. As we reach another August of bad Mariners, do you care about the rest of Major League Baseball? We love and support both Nelson Cruz and Mike Leake in their new endeavors. We make a shameless attempt to have HBO buy the rights to the Lookout Landing podcast. 31:00-41:00: September callups are nigh. They absolutely, positively, 100% have to include Ian Miller or we stage a coup. Again, Brodie Van Wagenen, accept Matthew’s LinkedIn request. The tremendous trio sings the praises of the collective attitude surrounding the Mariners’ minor league system. Fun is fun, y’all. Guess how many Mariners have hit 35 home runs in a season, and how close a certain lefty slugger is to getting there? 41:15-57:15: We devote a lot of brain power to Players’ Weekend. The opposite of a key to our heart is using your actual last name on your Players’ Weekend jersey. Does Kyle Seager have college football coach energy? Did J.P. Crawford have to go with Crawdaddy? Are the jerseys themselves bad? Let me go ahead and answer that for you….yes. 57:20-1:08:00: Questions from Twitter! If you submitted a question you are all of our best friend. The trade deadline has come and gone as Jerry Dipoto trades away Roenis Elias, Hunter Strickland, and Mike Leake. What did we get back? A bunch of unproven minor leaguers who might not even be good enough to make the Big League team ever. There's plenty of money freed up for future contracts though. Will any of it actually get used? Softy, after spending most of the season letting the team's struggles roll off his back, has finally had enough. Chuck Powell, KJR's morning show co-host and resident baseball expert is a little more optimistic about the changes and what's to come for the team. He goes in depth on the trades, and the team's farm system. A rebuilding baseball team is one of the worst positions to find yourself in as a fan. In pro football, you know that you can draft well, and sign some guys in the offseason and turn things around quickly. In college, you can recruit well. Basketball teams' fortunes can change with one great draft pick, or one free agent signing. In baseball, it's a long slog, and without a true cap, it's harder to attract those free agents away from a team like the Yankees. It's a struggle we as M's fans know all too well. Hopefully this is the rebuild that turns our fortunes around. ...Hopefully...
