Not since Gutenberg's printing press has one human being's inventions improved the quality of life for people as much as Apple co-founder and principle creator Steve Wozniak.    Fortunately for me the Woz loves jokes, humor and comedy in general so after sending him several heart felt e-mails requesting to chat with him he agreed, so last week while I was performing in San Francisco I drove down to Cupertino to record this conversation while him. This conversation was recorded at the Mandarin Oriental restaurant where Steve asked me to meet him. There is pleasant violin based classic music playing in the background because the owner politely delinked my request to turn off the music.    Steve Wozniak is not only a creative genius who has improved human life more than any other human being in the last 300 years, he also loves and cherishes humor and the story tellers who create the jokes.    He is exciting to talk to because he thinks so fast and can convey complicated information in a very simple way to be understood universally. His genius is not exclusively bound to his inventions that will lead the world to higher plains of consciousness and communications but it is the basic fact that he is a good person who genuinely cares about helping dreamer people like me wherever he can. It is my pleasure to present to you now the one and only Steve Wozniak!   Intro song: Cutting Room (Hot Pants) – Oceanliners Movie clip from YouTube: Her TRAILER 1 (2013) - Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson Movie HD Movie clip from YouTube: Klaatu's warning Recorded in Cupertino, CA. January 2014.    [Original broadcast date: Jan 28 2015]    This is the output of OpenAI ChatGTP prompting to summarize the transcription:  This conversation with Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, touches on humor, technology, and personal philosophies. Key highlights: Humor and Pranks Wozniak loves jokes and pranks, sharing stories about altering iPads, high school stunts, and making counterfeit $2 bills. Humor keeps him optimistic and happy. Thoughts on Technology AI Concerns: Wozniak shares concerns about AI surpassing human control, aligning with fears from Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking. He believes humanity's dependence on machines began with the Industrial Revolution. Privacy Advocacy: As a founder of the EFF, he champions internet freedom and user privacy, criticizing surveillance and censorship. Creativity Tools: Wozniak celebrates how Apple products empower creativity, describing computers as a "bicycle for the mind." Personal Insights Happiness: Optimism, humor, and calmness define his outlook. He avoids stress and focuses on enjoying life. Philosophy: Maintain youthful ideals, accept differences, and foster positive relationships. Closing Wisdom Stay curious, embrace creativity, and be kind to others. Humor and innovation are central to living a fulfilling life. Wozniak's blend of playfulness, intellect, and optimism offers both insight and inspiration.     Hooray for humanity! In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, host Stewart Alsop sits down with Jack, a tech enthusiast and founder of Vaporware, who also goes by Wereness on Twitter. The conversation spans topics such as Sweden's historical roots in Viking culture, entrepreneurial spirit, and technological innovation. They discuss Jack's insights into Swedish history, internet culture, and the origins of platforms like The Pirate Bay. The conversation eventually moves into Jack's focus on building the future of decentralized technology with projects like Vaporware and Plunder, alongside exploring concepts like solid-state interpreters. Despite being late to modernize compared to other European nations, Sweden developed a strong engineering and industrial focus, fostering a culture of innovation that paved the way for companies like Spotify.Pirate Bay and Sweden's Digital Pioneers: The discussion touches on how Sweden's advanced internet infrastructure and highly connected population led to projects like The Pirate Bay. Jack notes that Sweden's conformity to trends and its neophilic culture contributed to the rise of such platforms, where digital piracy was once a mainstream practice, reflecting a larger cultural shift in media consumption. The Conformity Paradox in Sweden: A key theme in the episode is Sweden's paradoxical approach to conformity, where at a national level, the country made nonconformist decisions, such as its unique COVID-19 strategy. Jack explains this as a deeper form of conformity to long-standing institutional trust, showing that Swedish society's adherence to institutional plans is rooted in a high level of trust in central authority.Decentralized Technology and Vaporware: Jack introduces the concept of Vaporware, a project aimed at building decentralized technologies to provide users with greater control over their data. He explains that Vaporware is a company built on Plunder, an alternative to Urbit, and emphasizes how these technologies aim to solve current issues related to internet privacy, data ownership, and freedom.Solid-State Interpreter for Future-Proof Computing: One of the most technical insights revolves around the solid-state interpreter, which Jack describes as a combination of a virtual machine and a database. It allows for the creation of a computing environment where code and data can be stored and updated indefinitely, ensuring that the programs and data remain functional and accessible long into the future, unlike current software systems.Reputation Systems and Social Trust: Jack challenges traditional reputation systems, advocating for a more nuanced, context-specific method of evaluating trust in online interactions. He suggests that symbols or markers should be used to indicate trustworthiness based on context, rather than relying on simple upvotes or scores, which can be gamed and lead to dystopian outcomes.Global Institutional Collapse and the Need for New Systems: Both Stewart and Jack reflect on the global decline of traditional institutions, with welfare states and centralized governance models failing to meet modern needs. They emphasize the importance of rethinking political and economic systems to adapt to the changing technological landscape, drawing parallels between Sweden's past successes and the broader need for innovative, decentralized solutions globally.

Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enWe're now more than three weeks deep into Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and many are asking the question: What information is still reaching Russians? Unless you're using a VPN to tunnel beneath the state's censorship, Instagram is blocked, Facebook is blocked, Twitter is blocked, and YouTube is probably next. The independent news media is in tatters, and it looks like the main social networks left standing will be domestic services like Odnoklassniki and Vkontakte, which enforce the Kremlin's political censorship — and then there's Telegram. For a better understanding of what this means for Russia's information space — focusing particularly on Russians' increased reliance on Telegram — The Naked Pravda welcomes back Dr. Tanya Lokot, an associate professor in Digital Media and Society at the School of Communications at Dublin City University in Ireland, and Dr. Mariëlle Wijermars, an assistant professor in Cyber-Security and Politics at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. The two scholars recently coauthored an article published in the journal Post-Soviet Affairs, titled, “Is Telegram a ‘Harbinger of Freedom'? The Performance, Practices, and Perception of Platforms as Political Actors in Authoritarian States.” Timestamps for this episode: (4:02) Is Telegram a “harbinger of freedom”? (5:05) How does Telegram's lack of moderation potentially endanger vulnerable groups? (8:10) How vulnerable are Telegram users to government snooping? (11:06) Why do users stick with Telegram if there are serious security concerns about the service? (13:16) On Telegram head Pavel Durov's mixed messages in Ukraine (17:30) Are the U.S. social media giants any better? (20:32) Revisiting Telegram during the 2020–2021 Belarusian protests (21:11) What content is available on Telegram during Russia's invasion of Ukraine? (26:36) That year between 2018 and 2019 when Russia “blocked” Telegram (31:10) What's next for the RuNet?

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, governments and tech companies have taken swift action to limit the flow of propaganda out of Russia, and Russia has in turn taken draconian measures to limit the flow of information into Russia, including banning some Western social media platforms, crushing what remained of independent journalism in the country and cracking down on free expression generally. How do these events fit in the broader scheme of things? The trajectory for global internet freedom and digital rights, just like the trajectory for democracy generally, has been going in the wrong direction for years. What do governments, organizations and the community of individuals concerned with these issues need to do to try to change that trajectory, and to support those working turn the tide? To answer these questions and more, I invited three experts to join me for this week's podcast Rebecca MacKinnon, Vice President for Global Advocacy at the Wikimedia Foundation Allie Funk, Senior Research Analyst for Technology and Democracy at Freedom House Justin Sherman, a Fellow at the Cyber Statecraft Initiative at The Atlantic Council

The Internet can be a powerful tool for decentralization and resistance. Lately, however, authorities from across the political spectrum have been trying to use it to enforce conformity and exert control. Ari Cohn, TechFreedom's Free Speech Counsel, and Rachel Altman, its Director of Digital Media, join the show to discuss government efforts to stamp out the Canadian trucker protest, to limit end-to-end encryption, and to dictate how private companies engage in content moderation; and to assess what those efforts mean for the future of Internet freedom.

The Indian government is flexing it's muscles to control the internet and social media platforms. A prolonged internet shutdown near Delhi due to the farmers' protests and orders to Twitter to block accounts - all these actions speak of tougher government measures. All of this has been closely followed by organisations such as 'Access Now'. Where does India stand among other countries with regards to internet restrictions? But the vote wasn't really about "net neutrality." Instead, it was a deeply political, bipartisan call—three Republican senators, including Susan Collins of Maine, signed on—for internet freedom writ large.
