The end of Ransomware? You may have seen some news lately about the US government working with other governments to ban ransomware payments. Well, I'm not so sure it will stop ransomware but it is an interesting topic and something we should discuss. Banning ransomware; what impact would it have? Government bans on ransomware payments will change how MSPs "manage" those clients Private sector should pay attention     Can MSPs be more proactive? I read an article who's headline talked about MSPs being more "proactive" with their customers. It occurred to me that this type of guidance is not aimed at MSPs, but instead at break/fix companies. Which begs the question, why include MSP in the title at all? And there lies the problem. These articles cannot distinguish between MSP and non-MSP. Reactive IT providers…there are expectations you must meet when joining the ranks of the professional MSP Being more proactive means being an MSP; that's the point! You can't be a little proactive; it's either all in or nothing at all   You can't "resell" compliance   vCIO or CaaS offerings depend on your familiarity in speaking the MSP compliance language. We are talking to a lot of MSPs today who look at compliance in a way that is very short sighted and not what will make a competitive difference in the MSP organization over the long run.   What does it mean to "speak MSP compliance?" Understand compliance frameworks which matter to your customers Understand the role your MSP organization plays in customer compliance Reselling a GRC tool does not make you a compliance expert

There is no recession in managed services You may be watching the economic news out there and thinking to yourself, how will this impact my managed services business. It's a good question to ask.   Economic indicators seem to be pointing to some form of recession or slowdown (some call it a soft landing) in the near future. For all we know we might already be in a recession. But, does a recession mean MSPs are going to be hit as well? Not if the past is any indicator. Historical recessions impact on MSPs Gartner IT spending projections looking really good How to prepare for economic downturns Managed services (including security) should be a significant shelter from any storm vCISO, vCIO, CaaS offerings will strengthen any managed services practice   Should MSPs be concerned about job loss to AI? Ever since ChatGPT launched many articles have been written about AI causing massive job loss in the future. While I would agree there are industries in dire need of innovation which typically cause large scale job shifts, managed services is not one of them. Job openings in managed services profession still unfilled AI is not going to solve anything close to all the labor shortages facing MSPs AI still needs to be managed (managed AI?) AI should be evaluated as an extension of your MSP workforce, not a replacement of it   Advice for 1 person MSPs There is nothing more exciting (or scary) than being a one person business owner. Managed services, like many other professions, has its share of one person MSP shops. I recently talked to one such MSP who wanted advice on how to grow beyond just himself. In this episode, Stuart highlights a crucial aspect: that the most challenging part of this process isn't necessarily the strategic application but overcoming self-imposed obstacles. This episode emphasises the concept of "getting out of your own way." Stuart explains how this key move can make a substantial difference, not only in the realm of account management but in various areas of running a successful MSP business. With newfound confidence and better conversations, MSP owners start unlocking their business potential.  In line with this, Stuart notes that these extra earnings don't instantly change net profits, as the funds are usually reinvested in expansion strategies like hiring more staff or investing in additional premises. However, these are crucial steps in solidifying a business' infrastructure, setting the stage for future scaling.  We also take a look at what business owners need to initiate their journey towards self-improvement and optimised client interaction. Stuart points out that it all begins with an in-depth analysis of your existing client base. It's about understanding what your clients are currently buying or not buying from you, and then finding ways to steer the conversation in a more beneficial direction.  The gap between what your clients are currently buying and what they should be buying is also a critical consideration, as it directly impacts the optimisation of security, efficiency, and effectiveness in their use of technology. However, Stuart notes that many MSPs struggle in this area because they don't understand their numbers or have difficulty pulling information from their PSA.  In conclusion, Stuart paints an optimistic picture of the potential that lies ahead for MSPs who understand and employ these principles. In 1989, Stuart Holtby started Allstar Tech as a boutique IT consulting practice helping SMEs with networking microcomputers.  It wasn't until the mid 90's that he began to call Allstar Tech a Managed Service Provider.  By 2000, Allstar Tech grew to 35 employees with $4 million in revenue. If there's anyone credible about how we could use this strategy to add more value to our clients and more projects in our MSP, he is no other than a VCIO himself – Paul Croker. In letting him introduce what he's been doing, Paul speaks of his company 18it UK which is focused on providing outsourced Virtual Chief Information Office (VCIO).   Before getting serious about how VCIOs help in the MSP journey, I asked Paul about the difference between the VCIO and the CTO role. Straightforward in his answer, we then had an interesting conversation as I asked Paul what he thinks about this strategy on the Old Sales Funnel and what can it do more to the New Sales Funnel.   Talking about one of my favourite rants – not talking technical matters because you are not selling to technical people, we then discussed how important having VCIO service is to understand your client and the people you deal with above anything else. As someone working with a team, I also asked Paul how having this strategy could work in such dynamics and how could it work in terms of chargeable matters.  Going halfway, I think it is also important to talk about how would an MSP be in having this kind of service and its processes. Paul emphasized the importance of right alignment. I also asked him which this service in the MSP could best work for – in planning or delivery.   The conversation gets even more interesting as Paul talked about who really is and what really is a VCIO, in an MSP. He also revealed their own ‘listening policy' that helped them in their business. This is a great reminder of how it helps us realign into getting our MSP's flow and its roadmaps looking forward. Em comemoração ao Dia Nacional de Combate ao fumo, em 29 de agosto, o médico Antonio Sproesser entrevista, neste episódio, a psicóloga Vera Borges, da Divisão de Controle de Tabagismo do Inca (Instituto Nacional de Câncer), no Rio de Janeiro, órgão que é referência internacional no assunto.Recentemente, o Inca divulgou o relatório "O tratamento do tabagismo no SUS durante a pandemia de 2019". O médico ressalta que o tabagismo mata 160 mil pessoas por ano no Brasil. Segundo ele, 35 mil casos de morte por infarto por ano são causados pelo cigarro, 25 mil casos de câncer de pulmão e 11 mil casos de AVC (acidente vascular cerebral). "São mortes que poderiam ser evitadas, por isso que estamos conversando hoje sobre prevenção", afirma.O objetivo do órgão é reduzir as mortes causadas pelo tabaco. "Na pandemia, temos uma preocupação a mais, porque o fumante pode evoluir para a forma mais grave da doença e corre risco de óbito", explica Vera. Segundo ela, as medidas de prevenção estão diretamente relacionadas à informação à população.Ela ainda as consequências ao fumante passivo e como funciona o tratameto no SUS, composto por equipe multidisciplinar, com profissionais especializados. "O tabagismo é uma doença. Hoje a ciência já mostrou que é uma dependência química causada pela ação da nicotina", afirma. "A medicação entra quando é necessária para diminuir sintomas de abstinência", completa. "No Brasil, temos programa estruturado para ajudar a largar o cigarro. Nós estamos cuidando, mas você precisa procurar ajuda", orienta.

Today's conversation focuses on client engagement, especially when things are slow in the relationship and things are working and we have moved to cruise control. Brian kicks this one off with a discussion around relationship building and how it is critical to not neglect the relationship or take it for granted.  So, how can we start this conversation when we don't have much to say?  It's all about ice breakers and asking questions about the clients business. This conversation needs to go beyond the point of contact and you need to engage with all key stakeholders in the process. We discuss how there are always changes going in the client environment. Personnel changes, customer wins, budget changes.  These forces can change the client view on our relationship and we need to stay in front of our client so we can see opportunities and problems that may be coming. We can do this through live touch points, CSAT or NPS surveys and gain information we can use.  The challenge is most Account Mangers fall down on touching their client in between sales.  These resources need to schedule time to contact each customer to stay in tune with the customer and build the relationship. Robb speaks about the past, present, and future model and how the AM's often struggle with the future, or strategy, piece of the puzzle.  Brian goes into detail on approaches for junior reps to get the process started.  If we manage the relationship consistently over time we become the sherpa guiding our clients.  The result happier clients with improved sales velocity.

In this episode we dig deep into the role of the MSP Inside Sales Representative.  Robb starts the discussion with some of the key responsibilities of the farmer rep and discusses their involvement in deal registration and renewals, proposal generation and customer service. Brian discusses how MSP clients can be the 'gift that keeps on giving" and how it is crucial to keep close to your client and the account manager function needs to support the account and understand the client drivers and obstacles and communicate that internally. The role of vCIO drives the farming process.  In building a roadmap we are better able to illustrate a long term plan.  This allows for better client budgeting and shorter sales cycles if executed properly. We then dive into key activities around communication, cadence, and duties.  this includes staying informed on client and propsect news.  They keep tabs on press releases, annuncements, and events to keep the entires team aware of current events. The farmer should also be responsbile for tracking customer satisfaction.  For EOS users this cn be iin the scorecard.  It is key for the account manager to stay in tune with the overall health of the relationship. For companies that integrate the farmer roles they can be a growth agent and ensure the account blooms.

In this episode we discuss the role of the MSP Account Manager.   A great account manager can maximize the lifetime value of the relationship and ensure that the relationship sticks long-term Brian outlines the strategic account management process he employed while running his MSP.  Key points are understanding the key initiatives and obstacles that a client is facing and making recommendations to contribute to solving each. We also identify the key difference between the Key Account Manager (KAM) and the Technical Account Manager (TAM).  Key drivers for each role depends on the size on personnel of the MSP.  We also discuss how these resources can "stealth sell". Tim discusses how to leverage the DISC profile for assessing resources and determining how to assess success in each role.  Robb discusses the communication style that can be leveraged within the DISC profile. We dive into QBR's as an account management tool.  We discuss the frequency of Business Reviews and that should drive those meetings.  WE talk about ways to rate your clients to determine frequency and driving value back to your client. We close the meeting with staying in contacts with clients begin the key to account management.  You need to be proactive and stay ahead of issues.

We have hit the peak of the COVID crisis and our conversation focuses on what MSP’s can do to prepare to head back to work in the “New Normal”.   Brian speaks of the importance of the VCIO role as small to mid-sized businesses get back to work.  VCIO’s can help with helping the SMB’s catalog WFH lessons learned and gaps they may have experienced in deploying a WFH workforce.  More importantly, helping our clients build a new strategy as the restrictions on this crisis starts to relax. We start to look at the cyber security issues experienced during the crisis.  These include the impact of layoffs of remote workforce, Zoombombing, and staff security awareness.  We then start mapping out solutions to these common issues. Robb discusses how too many Account Managers and vCIO’s only look at the past and the present and not enough are helping shape the technology plan for the future.   Tim sparks a discussion about how all team members need to step up and help contribute wherever necessary to keep the machine moving as we move into the ‘new normal’.  Robb touches upon how many MSP’s he is speaking with are reviewing their SOP’s as they have changed as a result of work from home. He is also seeing those that embrace security will be leading the way in the ‘new normal’.  Brian shares that security awareness programs and employee monitoring will be key needs.
