Quissy & Pasta discuss what it's been like since the Battlegrounds Alterac Valley & Warsong Gulch have been released in WoW Classic. They also discuss the Feast of Winter Veil, now available in both Classic and BfA Retail, and more!
It's the penultimate episode of Countdown To Classic, and the show continues to bring in the big guns of MMORPG gaming, as well as a bunch of the WoW Classic community for a chat. Today, we kick off with a chat about battlegrounds with show favourite Marky Mark, and the 'new meta' that Classic players are experiencing through the Alterac Valley, and to a lesser extent, Warsong Gulch grind. After that, Josh is joined for an epic chat with MMORPG legendary designer Raph Koster, the current CEO of Playable Worlds, and former lead designer and creative director of Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, respectively. Listen in to one of the best chats the show has featured, as Raph talks everything from Richard Garriott's castle, to his thoughts on micro-transactions and their place in gaming, to his current work with Playable Worlds. Following that, Josh publishes a bunch of calls that he has held on to far too long, with apologies to the callers, as we heard about a diverse range of WoW Classic topics from DHK's to Pet Threat. Highlights Below: Calling Countdown #1 - Ranking in 2019 w/ DaRealMarkyMark - 5:20 Calling Countdown #2 - Raph Koster on MMORPG's - 37:20 Calling Countdown #3 - More Death & Taxes Memories w/ TheNidhugg - 3:08:10 Calling Countdown #4 - Feral Druid Issue w/ Quanta - 3:35:50 Calling Countdown #5 - Pet Threat w/ Sera - 3:47:15 Calling Countdown #6 - Dishonourable Kills w/ Soniti & Shahin - 4:02:30 Calling Countdown #7 - Healing w/ Effie - 4:19:10 Find Josh’s movie podcast, The Sinner Files @ https://www.sinnerfiles.com/ Follow Josh on Twitter @ https://twitter.com/count2classic?lang=en Join the Countdown To Classic Discord here: https://discord.gg/2xJAwNf Support the show with a tip at Ko-Fi @ https://ko-fi.com/Y8Y3D2TT
Quissy & Pasta discuss Elemental Invasions, Battlegrounds: Alterac Valley & Warsong Gulch, Queue times in Classic WoW, Faerlina and Grobbulus server updates as well as a few Patch 8.3 highlights, including the new charity pet, Dottie.
In Episode 8, we recap our Thanksgiving breaks, discuss more news about Classic, in particular how we've started alts on Grobbulus and more about the upcoming Battlegrounds: Alterac Valley & Warsong Gulch. We also cover the Mythic gear debate currently going on in BfA, as well as the controversy surrounding The Jailer's Identity. Enjoy!
The beta rolls on and brings with it a couple of fresh talking points for the show and its listeners to tackle this week with Josh. Warsong Gulch has been open for a couple of weeks now in the beta and Arathi Basin just opened days ago, and with those come the bloodthirsty PvP testers looking to see how things perform on the battlegrounds. After that we break down stream sniping, after some comments made by streamer Sodapoppin ignited the forums this past week on the issue. Then, we welcome back vanilla WoW level designer John Staats, for the first of a lengthy ongoing segment all about the design of vanilla WoW's instances. Listen in to part one of this series, as John tells us all about how he built one of the most beloved dungeons in MMORPG history, Blackrock Depths. The show then rounds out with a great call with a sitting member of the state of Maine's House of Representatives, about that one time that WoW got caught up in politics, and also a follow up call from last week, for a slightly different angle on the Trollgodx issue at the dueling tournament. Technically PVP Show Notes Episode 66 - More Blizzcon News Upcoming WoW PVP Events Resurgent ESB Monday Fight nights WOW PVP NEWS There were a couple 1v1 tournaments on the Classic Demo server! :) https://challonge.com/StaysafeTV https://challonge.com/zao4cs8f Forums are getting a redo: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/breaking/22764995 Subject of Analysis Blizzcon Dev Interviews There are no plans for improvements on PvP gearing, the dev team wants to see the 8.1 changes on the PvE side in action first before coming up with anything for PvP Free for All PvP Quests are scheduled to make a return in Nazjatar. Wintergrasp is coming back as an Epic Battleground! The Island Expedition's AI was improved to more likely behave like players and be used in Battlegrounds. Just like players, the AI likes to jump a lot! PvP Warfronts are currently not planned, but it is an idea the dev team discusses consistently. PvP Zone Objectives (like the PvP towers in Terokkar Forest) are scheduled to make an appearance in Nazjatar For Tides of Vengeance, the team is working on reviewing the state of abilities added to the GCD and many movement abilities will likely be removed from it. Since revamps for Arathi Basin and Warsong Gulch were announced, we were curious if Alterac Valley would receive a similar revamp. No plans at the current time. Maybe something to get around to later on. WSG and AB are more compact so you see more at once. They are also two popular battlegrounds and part of the Rated Battleground rotation. What about Ashenvale getting an update now that Warsong Gulch has one? Overall win rates in random battlegrounds are "shockingly even." Epic battlegrounds tend to favor Alliance and the other battlegrounds skew a bit more in the Horde's favor. The ratio seems of win rates is about 54% Horde and 46% Alliance, not including Rated Battlegrounds. The amount of players who utilize War Mode currently skew towards Horde. In Tides of Vengeance, the team is looking into offering some kind of increased rewards for the less-represented faction in War Mode, so the risk and reward are better calibrated. Ion suspects that many Alliance players had bad experiences in War Mode in the beginning of the expansion and have turned off War Mode because of it. The purpose of increased awards is to make up for the risk of being killed by the opposite faction, but they want to keep this on equal grounds, and their hope is that increasing the rewards of the less represented faction will encourage more people to activate War Mode when their faction is at a disadvantage. Ion admits that Berserking is a bit too powerful of a racial ability for some classes and this is why it is receiving a small nerf. Historically, PvP servers have always been more Horde-favored. It might have to do with player identity in the game, such as wanting to be something battle-hardened like an orc. Blizzard is also keeping an eye on class and specialization appearance rates in PvP combat. https://www.mmo-champion.com/content/8158-Enhancement-Shaman-PTR-Changes-Forbes-Eurogamer-Interviews-Podcast-Interviews Including a Forbes interview with Ion about PVP: https://www.forbes.com/sites/hnewman/2018/11/07/blizzard-working-to-balance-warcrafts-alliance-and-horde-players-in-war-mode-raiding/#5e4361df3c18 What’s next panel https://www.wowhead.com/news=288351/blizzcon-2018-world-of-warcraft-whats-next-panel CDew streams a review of the Blizzcon games and told his secrets https://youtu.be/1TWvmhhdGAs Trivia question Previous episode question was: What is the name of the pandaren racial trait that reduces falling damage? Modern client is not compatible with old data. Master data problem: from single line on a master table to multiple linked tables catalogued by ID number much richer environment but not compatible with the single line system For example, spells could only apply up to three actions on a target in classic In current form, spells no longer limited to three effects and are formatted differently Almost all other data such as items, characters, creatures, NPCs, AI, spawning and more) have had their database formats changed

Recorded on September 12, 2012 with Brian Fife, James Fingal and Thomas Westberg. Fairness is slippery and it can be hard to find a definition that most players in a game share. Brian, Tom and Jim all agree that the perception of unfairness does tend to ruin fun in a game. It can often be hard to differentiate between lack of balance and a gap in player skill. Often what a player might call unfair is just poor game design or balance. Brian worries about players who apply arbitrary limitations or restrictions to a game in single player mode and get crushed when they try multiplayer. Tom thinks these people are crybaby losers. For multiplayer games, open communication about exploits is just as important as how fast they are resolved. We talked about what it means for a single player game to be unfair, but didn’t come to firm conclusions. If a game’s AI “cheats”, is it unfair? Children's Week EventOn Fri our guild members went out and murdered the Alliance with a reason. The school of hard knocks is one of the hardest of the yearlong achievements that make up the Meta Achievement: what a long strange trip it has been. The problem of course is that unlike the other events School of hard knocks requires you to do a set of tasks while you have your orphan with you, these are: Capture the flag in Eye of the Storm Assault a flag in Arathi BasinAssault a tower in Alterac ValleyReturn a fallen flag in Warsong GulchDoing any of these things reliably is hard at the best of times. trying to do it when 10,20 or even 40 people are all rushing to do the same thing is almost impossible. that is where the guild comes in. This fri we bundled up together and managed to get a lot of people there School of hard knocks. Looking For GuildSo this week we enabled the Looking for Guild options and wow have we had a good response we have had new people applying from all over so I wanted to give people an Idea of what it is all about. Along with all the little checkboxes that you fill out in the LFG tool there is a 255char block that we can put in a message. and this message is what diferentiate us from the other guilds.Currently our message reads:message “Why not join Needs a hug. We have 14 bank tabs, our tabard gives +400 stamina, our guild name improves our sex appeal, and our recruitment messages lie outrageously.”This message is pulling us in about 5-10 recruits per day once the apply I look at the message they have sent back. if they don’t put anything in the request window they are out. The more fun there message is better the chance we grab them. Once I or one of the other offciers contact them we fill them in on what the guild is like and if they want to join we invite them. Unfortunatly, this is never fool proof and we get a lot of chaff with the wheat. So if you think someone is awesome or you are having a problem let an officer know as soon as possible.Coming UpFriday Night Fightsthis fridayNaxx achivementsThe dread fortress Naxxramas, one of the ancient temples of the Nerubian people, torn from the ground by the Litch King and retooled by the mad architect Obrahiim, the Traveler now floats above dragonblight serving as a staging point for the tattered forces of the litch king.
