TCW Podcast Episode 230 - Crafting the World of WarCraft   World of Warcraft has stood the test of time for twenty years, and now we can explore the fascinating history behind its creation. The developers drew inspiration from MMOs like Ultima Online, EverQuest, Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot, and more, incorporating what they loved while tackling unique challenges. From art style and storytelling to quest design, factions, and PvP, every aspect of the game presented obstacles to overcome. Despite launching with several rushed elements, WoW captivated a gaming audience eager for an accessible MMO—and went on to set records for years to come   TCW 054 - Blizzard: Vikings and WarCraft: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/blizzard-vikings-and-warcraft/ TCW 055 - Blizzard: Hellfire and The World… of WarCraft: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/blizzard-hellfire-and-the-world%E2%80%A6-of-warcraft/ How to play Necromunda: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqAxPXd5y8g Place Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment (Affiliate): https://amzn.to/41MvT5c The WoW Diary: A Journal of Computer Game Development [Second Edition] (Affiliate): https://amzn.to/4kzpxNT EverQuest Launch Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AJdrc8ZsEI TCW 219 - Diablo 1: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/diablo-1/ TCW 220 - Diablo 2: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/diablo-2/ A Brief History of Chess: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeB-1F-UKO0 Tabula Rasa Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGQ0Nb3U9kw Tabula Rasa Box Art: https://cdn.mobygames.com/covers/4266351-richard-garriotts-tabula-rasa-pre-order-bonus-pack-windows-front.jpg World of Warcraft Box Art: https://i.etsystatic.com/19063773/r/il/3b9985/2196312265/il_fullxfull.2196312265_13ii.jpg WarCraft 1 Intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA40KEDV6Dc WoW V0.53: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RszVOPx1apI&t=0s Duskwood Retrospective: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2suPQAZMqc TCW 030 - Doom!: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/doom-1479057917/ Ed Bighead Campaign: https://www.facebook.com/RememberWhenNick/videos/remember-when-bigheads-campaign/279376435941596/ Snow White Trailer (1937): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L16P0rip9E4 13th Warrior Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTVze7cfwWU     New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. Sections played: First few battles Issues covered: finals fantasies, 1997 in games, testing various games, placing us in that time, a surprising departure in the series, TTRPGs and being "like chess," translating a genre to the PS1, closer combat/smaller spaces, opacity, not remembering the game well, the Zodiac, some other series, a niche genre, limited input options and menus, Ivalice and medieval setting, a deeper simulated system than FF combat generally has, translating well to the genre, the opening cinematics, preferring alignment of story with general engine use, developing technology to stream video, in-game stuff holding up better, getting the leverage from sprites, the diorama look, merging gameplay with non-interactive content, pre-rendered rewards, terrain rendering and spinning the camera, the close-in space vs larger areas and fog of war, elevation and abilities, map differentiation for visuals and challenge, the game over screen, modern engagement. A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

From 1997 to 1999, the gaming industry underwent a series of significant transformations that redefined its landscape. In 1997, as 3D gaming continued to revolutionize the industry, Sony's PlayStation emerged dominant, but it wasn't without challenges, as both Nintendo and Sega grappled with changing dynamics. A notable highlight was the intriguing saga of "Duke Nukem Forever" and its impact on the perception of game development. By 1998, the gaming world celebrated a milestone as it was recognized as a bona fide art form, with awards honoring its creative achievements. This was juxtaposed with controversies surrounding violent game content, even as Sega's Dreamcast ushered in the sixth console generation with its cutting-edge features. The year 1999 witnessed the meteoric rise of indie developers and the massive success of Pokemon, a phenomenon that transcended the gaming sphere. Additionally, Hollywood's foray into gaming, exemplified by Stephen Spielberg's "Medal of Honor", signaled a major shift, while legal battles like Sony Corporation v. Bleem LLC emphasized the importance of intellectual property and sparked debates on emulation.Featured Games:Final Fantasy VII, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, GoldenEye 007, The Curse of Monkey Island, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Age of Empires, Ultima Online, Sonic Jam, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Half-Life, Unreal, Pokemon Red and Blue, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Super Smash Bros, StarCraft, System Shock 2, Age of Empires II, and RollerCoaster Tycoon. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 5 (00:06) - 1997 (30:19) - 1998 (46:55) - 1999 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Mitch and Blake discuss how the rise of games-as-services has privileged durable, long-duration play-patterns -- leading to the modern idea of the "Forever Game" which can persist for decades. Mitch outlines his five attributes of long-term engagement and provides examples of each from games like Ultima Online, World of Warcraft, Age of Empires, and League of Legends. They look at the two distinct strands of long-duration play that emerged in the 1990's -- the massively-multiplayer online role playing game and the session-based online competitive game -- and how those genres evolved and cross-polinated to produce multi-billion dollar online games that have remained viable for a decade or more. I really wanted John-Clark to get a sense of understand on what this game is current day. He got to see an active guild, a hunt, historical houses and some priceless interactions. John-Clark clearly did exhaustive research on UO and his questions really had me thinking. I think trying to fit all of who he is interviewing into a written article seems like a arduous task that I cannot imagine! I hope however the insight I gave and even showing him in game footage helps this article last another 25 years as UO has. I will share this article once written in my discord and social media platforms as I am chomping at the bit to read it. A huge thank you to John-Clark for giving this game and its genius design a platform. Brad's birthday has come and gone, which gives him the privilege of choosing our next tech year in review. This time, the banner year of 1997, which saw everything from Dolly the cloned sheep to IBM's chess-playing Deep Blue, the nuclear-powered Cassini probe to Saturn (and protests to match), the American launch of DVD, Steve Jobs' return to Apple, the anything-goes brutality of Ultima Online, and a bunch more.Support the Pod! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Morrowind. We thought we were so close, but neither of us has finished and so we talk about some late quest stuff. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Brett 102 hrs, Tim 36 hrs Issues covered: losing a quest item, Brett spends many hours playing weekend games, having no next steps for a quest, having guild quests to finish, not obvious when there's more stuff, having to talk to everybody, the journal breaking under it's own weight, not remembering names, voice anchoring you to a character, skipping stuff in the world and not being curious, having the idea of the space but not quite having enough support to see the transitions, not being able to identify the current quest for yourself, a good formula to build upon, becoming acclaimed by all the councilors, speaking to the Gods, having to buy a slave in the main quest, the main quest being a whole game on its own, maximal games and being what you want, a brief tangent into Enchanting, going after the Dark Brotherhood, the commitment to the books, rewriting The Lusty Argonian Maid, a good quest, the feeling of a homebrew campaign, having a character be recalled for politics, carrying too much stuff, devaluing items, MMO levels of systems, having a long life with a game, discovering stuff for ten years, making a specific class, the "and" games, Brett and lore, wanting the lore to impact what you're seeing, finding the vampire clan houses, curing vampirism, saying yes to everything and the costs that incurs. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Psychonauts 2, Reed Knight, Dungeons & Dragons, Fallout 4, Meridian 59, Ultima Online, Chrono Trigger, AD&D Gold Box, Artimage, Kingdom Hearts, Mass Effect, Star Wars, LucasArts, Ashton Herrmann, mysterydip, Resident Evil Village, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. This week’s Nose is a crushing responsibility. The Lost Daughter is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s debut as a writer and director, and it’s made her a Golden Globe-nominated director and a Golden Osella-winning screenwriter so far. It’s an adaptation of the Elena Ferrante’s 2006 novel, and it’s available to stream on Netflix. The Lost Daughter stars Olivia Colman (in a Globe-nominated performance), Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris, and Peter Sarsgaard. And: Station Eleven is an HBO Max limited series adaptation of Emily St. John Mandel’s 2014 novel. It tells the story of a world during and after a devastating, flu-like pandemic (sound familiar?). Station Eleven stars Mackenzie Davi, Himesh Patel, Lori Petty, Gael García Bernal, Caitlin FitzGerald, David Cross, and others. Its 10th and final episode hit HBOMax yesterday. Some other stuff that happened this week, give or take: Ronnie Spector, ’60s icon who sang ‘Be My Baby,’ dies at 78 Bob Saget Dead at 65 Marilyn Bergman, Oscar-winning composer, dies at age 93 Ultima Online: The Assassination of Lord British Remains Gaming’s MOST Infamous Event The events of Ultima Online have become legendary in the gaming community, in ways no one could have ever imagined.
