Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 7, betrayal is the featured crime. This is Opera Dinner Club by Debra H. GoldsteinDELIBERATIONJessica Rothman is close to discovering who betrayed her grandparents, Helen and Wilhelm Rothman, to the Nazi's but she needs our help to figure out who from the final dinner party betrayed them. Here is the list in the order we met them:Melinda Brooks, smuggler, last of the party remainingAlbert Brooks, professor, opposed to Melinda's activitiesLloyd Edgerton, armament dealer, opposed to Victoria's activitiesVictoria Edgerton, smuggler, Melinda's usual partnerMarta Schmidt, servant to Helen's parents, now living with the RothmansHans Schmidt, servant to Helen's parents, now living with the RothmansBernard Schmidt, son to the Schmidts, working at times as a servant to the RothmansAri, Jewish man working to get children out of AustriaHere is what Jessica knows:Helen Rothman devised a scheme to smuggle valuables for Jews to England. Melinda and Victoria worked together as did Marta and Hans Schmidt.Ari is a mysterious guest who has a seat of honor at the Rothman dinner table. He with Helen proposes to smuggle children out as they are doing with money and jewels.Albert Brooks and Lloyd Edgerton did little to participate for the sake of their businesses. Both were afraid of the fallout should the scheme come to light. Eventually, they both wanted their wives to stop. The Schmidts are German. Having worked for Helen's parents and then moving in with the Rothmans, their loyalty is to the Rothman's.Bernard Schmidt participates in the Nazi youth movement because he's expected to. Like his parents, his loyalty is to the Rothmans.Upon whom do we shine the spotlight of betrayal?ABOUT Debra H. GoldsteinJudge Debra H. Goldstein is the author of Kensington's Sarah Blair mystery series that features a woman who finds being in the kitchen more frightening than murder (One Taste Too Many, Two Bites Too Many, Three Treats Too Many, Four Cuts Too Many, and Five Belles Too Many). Her other writings include the novels Should Have Played Poker and Maze in Blue, and more than fifty short stories that have appeared in numerous periodicals and anthologies. We had the pleasure of welcoming Barb Lau to the show in this episode. Barb is the Executive Director of the Association of Women Contractors. Barb has been the ED for AWC since 2008 and lots has changed since then. AWC was founded by 10 trailblazing women in the construction industry back in 1995; that's right, AWC turns 30 years old in 2025! Because it's been such a vital organization for a niche group of entrepreneurs, it's lasted the test of time and has been a staunch advocate for women in construction since the beginning. Barb talked about being invited to Washington (more than once) to give her input in front of congressional leaders who were seeking to learn more about the needs of women business owners and the particular hurdles they face. Things are better than they used to be, she said, but we still have work to do. We talked about the uncommon amount of support that AWC gives its members. The benefits of joining are evident in the testimonies of those who recently attended a networking Social; stories of how AWC had impacted their business were plentiful.Learning that AWC is an anomaly in the US was quite surprising! Barb said the only other similar group representing women and minorities in construction was established in Houston, so for those in other markets, Barb grants her permission to use her ideas!Listen to the interview here.Connect with Julie Keyes, Keyestrategies LLCFounder, Consultant, Author, Pod-caster and Instructor

Women Contractors We had the honor of interviewing two women from the Association of Women Contractors in today's episode! Barb Lau, its Executive Director, and Missy Scherber, an AWC member and Co-founder of Scherber Excavating. It was a fabulous conversation!AWC was founded by a small group of women contractors in 1995, since then it has grown to 230 members, made of women owned commercial and residential contracting companies who provide an array of services in commercial construction projects. The organization has three primary goals for its members:Member Advocacy (within their industry, community and in politics)Industry and Business EducationBusiness Development ConnectionsMissy joined the group as a much smaller business than she is now, and credits the advice, connections and education she received from AWC for much of that growth. Now Missy spends a great deal of time telling the stories of other contractor members on her Social Media channels, helping to promote the Association and member businesses too.Barb's vision for the future of AWC is to grow its educational offerings by building out their own online academy. She's also been directed by their Board of Directors to begin her own succession planning at least two years before she exits. She's learned that exit planning takes time and she's very committed to making sure the Association leadership transitions successfully!Listen to the episode here!Learn more about the Association of Women Contractors hereSupport the Show.Join the Twin Cities Chapter of EPI at the 2024 Owners Forum! As a passionate advocate for transgender youth, Ben strives to meet everyone with compassion, regardless of their starting point. Join us as Ben shares insights on the importance of unconditional parental support, the impact of societal expectations, and his ongoing advocacy work.Key Points:Parental Support: Ben emphasizes that children exploring their gender identity need unconditional love and support from their parents. Delaying support can lead to feelings of isolation and a desire to leave home as soon as possible.Exploration: Allowing children to explore their gender identity without judgment is crucial. Exploration is a natural part of childhood and should not be restricted by rigid gender norms.Gender Expectations: Parents often impose their own gender expectations on their children. Letting go of these expectations benefits all children, helping them develop into emotionally intelligent and confident adults.Misconceptions: Ben discusses his own fears and misconceptions about hormone therapy, noting that societal narratives often distort the realities of transitioning.Identity: It's important to recognize that trans individuals have multifaceted identities beyond their gender. Trans people lead diverse and fulfilling lives.Advocacy: Ben addresses lawmakers, highlighting that anti-trans laws are unpopular and fail to address pressing societal issues. He urges them to consider the broader impact of their actions.Support Networks: Queer and trans youth should find supportive networks and allies to help them navigate challenges and advocate on their behalf.Storytelling: Sharing personal stories is a profound way to foster connection and understanding.
