Conspicuously absent on last month's Better Call Saul podcast, Josh Sarnecky returns to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Avatar: The Last Airbender with his brother Aaron.Avatar: The Last Airbender is an animated action-adventure series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The series premiered on Nickelodeon on February 21, 2005. It ran for three seasons and 61 episodes, finishing on July 19, 2008.The series takes place in a fantasy world where “benders” can manipulate the elements of water, earth, fire, and air. The world fell out of balance when the Fire Nation invaded its neighbors. Protagonist Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) is the last surviving Airbender and the Avatar, who can control all four elements. He must defeat the Fire Lord (Mark Hamill) to end the war. Aiding Aang are his Water Tribe friends Katara (Mae Whitman) and Sokka (Jack DeSena), as well as Earthbender Toph (Michaela Jill Murphy).Other characters include the Fire Lord's banished son Zuko (Dante Basco), Zuko's ruthless sister Azula (Grey DeLisle), and their Uncle Iroh (Mako, Greg Baldwin). Many critics regard Avatar: The Last Airbender as one of the greatest animated series of all time, praising it for its blend of lighthearted comedy, deep themes, character growth, mythology, and martial arts-based action. The series won one Primetime Emmy for Individual Achievement in Animation and was nominated for another for Outstanding Animated Program. The cartoon spawned a sequel series, The Legend of Korra, as well as multiple comics and books. More shows and movies are in the works, including a movie following Aang and a sequel to The Legend of Korra called Avatar: Seven Havens.Aaron and Josh talk about their history with Avatar: The Last Airbender before going into the show's plot, characters, animation, and legacy. They also discuss the show's live-action adaptations and the new projects coming from Avatar Studios. For more Nicktoons, you can listen Josh and Aaron's podcasts on SpongeBob SquarePants and Rugrats.Avatar: The Last Airbender is streaming on Netflix and Paramount+

We are in a new arc, everyone! Yona and the boys have left the Water Tribe and are back in Earth Tribe territory (until they're in Kai). Meanwhile, Soo-Won is plotting. Against Kai. But this time he's the aggressor. Also: Would You Rather, FMK, and a character ranking. Here is the character ranker we used. Also, I have no idea if it'll be fun to listen to so if you get bored we make random comments from 34:23-39:56 (where we give our official rankings). As always, we're on twitter, tumblr, or gmail. Or we will just see you again next week!
It's a falling action week. We wrap up Yona in the Water Tribe and solidify Lili's undying commitment to (a mildly confused) Yona. Yona also cries about Hak smiling. It's wonderful. Also: tattoos, crustaceans vs. mollusks, and our inaugural game of Fuck Marry Kill and Would You Rather. It's very fun. Please find us on twitter, tumblr, or gmail if you'd like to tell us who you would FMK or if you'd rather go to a spa or a festival. Otherwise, we'll see you next week for the first foray into new lands!
As Evangelina says at one point: this is like a Shakespearean comedy but it's not funny at all because everyone involved has some horrific trauma. Things are tense in the Water Tribe and we are both having the best time. Also discussed: fanfiction. As always, we're on twitter, tumblr, and gmail if you want to reach out. If not, we'll just see you back here next week!
New arc, new tribe, new plot. We're in the Water Tribe now, and there is a mysterious drug making the rounds. Jae-ha is its first victim from our gang, and thus starts the direction of the plot from here on now. Plus our girl Lili, who Evan has had for a day and has already adopted. Also, we took a uquiz on what type of anime boyfriend we should have (to varying degrees of accuracy). We're on twitter, tumblr, and gmail if you want to send us a message. Otherwise, thank you for listening and we'll see you next week!
Is Katara the best Avatar character? In Season 2, Episode 5 of Champion Casters, Michael and Joe revisit one of their favorite franchises, Avatar: The Last Airbender, to give Katara a more formal discussion. They take on some of Katara's highlights from the series, episodes like "Imprisoned", "The Painted Lady", "The Puppet Master", and "The Southern Raiders." Katara has a long history of fighting for hope, but what motivates her to fight for that, how does that fight manifest, and how does that affect other characters in the story? Michael and Joe discuss all of this--even more stuff--and why Katara undoubtedly deserves the Champion Belt. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/championcasters/message

This week, Janet and Dante are joined by Avatar Studios' Consultant on Native Representation, Migizi Pensoneau! The trio discusses the many layers of “Bato of the Water Tribe,” including Aang's actions in this episode (controversial amongst fans!), the introduction of the very memorable shirshu (multiple-animals-hybrid alert!) and bounty hunter June, and the reinforcement of what it means to honor not just your literal family, but also your chosen one. Julianna and Keerstan discuss Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 1, Chapters 19 and 20: The Siege of the North Parts 1 and 2. In the season finale of the show as well as the podcast, we yet have a lot of strong emotions about a certain overprotective and underappreciated Water Tribe genius and a certain pre-redemption Fire Prince, even with them yet being so at odds up until this point. And as always, a certain tea-loving Uncle gives us all the feels right with them. Long live the moon spirit. Julianna and Keerstan discuss Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 1, Chapter 15: Bato of the Water Tribe. Serious dad vibes make Aang feel like yesterday's news, what with all the pelts and tales and stewed sea prunes. Bato of the Water Tribe tells it like it is. Zuko hires a Shirshu-riding huntress named June. Iroh tries to impress with some perfume. Team Avatar breaks up but they get back together. Everything's better with plot twists. Oh, and Kailey has quite a theory about F.C. Yee's daofei storyline.

The Legend of Korra Book Two: Spirits finally meanders to it's somewhat muddled but more-or-less satisfying status quo-shattering conclusion with the final three chapters; 212, "Harmonic Convergence," 213, "Darkness Falls," and 214, "Light in the Dark." We discuss the season highlights (Tenzin, Nuktuk, Varrick) and lowlights (the Water Tribe civil war, the dumbing down of Lin Beifong), and which characters were best or underserved. How does Unalaq stack up against other villains? (Spoiler: he's the boringest!) Azula evolves into her ultimate form as the Spirit Mushroom. Arlo gets Seed of Wondered by the Tree of Time. And the whole shebang wraps up with Korra's Krazy Kosmic Kaiju battle! Also, this episode is late and it's Arlo's fault, and we whine about our first world podcast problems. Next: a break between books of Korra means another book of the Dark Horse Comics graphic novel continuation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. So next week we look at Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru's third installment, Volume 3: The Rift. So join us for that...we'll leave the spirit portal open for ya. The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 06:30) Main Topic (06:30 - 1:26:45) Outro / Next (1:26:45 - 1:29:38)
It's a light week this week as not much happens in chapters 15-17. The kids meet up with an old friend of the family (and Uncle Iroh reveals a bit of his freaky side?) in “Bato of the Water Tribe.” We get an inside look at the power of the Dark Side (i.e. firebending) in “The Deserter.” And at “The Northern Air Temple” we meet the multi-eyed flying bison Cthulhu god. There's also a bit of discussion about the preservation of ancient cultures vs. the progress of technology, whether Aang gets let off the hook for his mistakes a bit too easily, and Katara being the Wolverine of the group. But mostly we just mock AJ for being a world-class hipster that objectifies cartoon women. Next: we come to the end of Book One as we discuss chapters 18-20, “The Waterbending Master,” “The Siege of the North, Part 1,” and “The Siege of the North, Part 2.” The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 07:55) Main Topic (07:55 - 1:04:20) Outro / Next (1:04:20 - 1:06:53)
Another four chapter episode of The Avatar Returns sees our hosts debating chemical castration, the ‘Shipper Wars, and whether it's okay to lie sometimes. Its look at the larger context of the Avatar in microcosm (and some creepy canyon crawlers) earns “The Great Divide” more respect than expected, while meaningful character moments and truly hilarious dialogue don't quite raise “The Fortuneteller” up as high as you'd think. The two middle chapters this week, however, stand out as Paul, Eric, and AJ all agree “The Storm” and “The Blue Spirit” are truly among the finest chapters in the series to date. Next: we take another week off before heading into the home stretch of Book One with chapters 15-17, “Bato of the Water Tribe,” The Deserter,” and “The Northern Air Temple.” The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 04:45) Main Topic (04:45 - 1:08:34) Outro / Next (1:08:34 - 1:11:02)
