We can't even pretend to have chill about this. On this extra special episode, we interview the namesake of our mascot and inspiration for the title of the show, Waverly herself, the legend, the icon, Tamlyn Tomita! We of course ask Tamlyn about the Joy Luck Club, what it meant 30 years ago, what it means now, and her thoughts on playing Waverly. She also talks Karate Kid II, her equally iconic role of Kumiko, and her personal ties to it as a person of Okinawan-descent. Plus she shares one of her all-time comfort foods, what it meant growing up as the daughter of an Okinawan-Filipina mom and a Japanese-American cop dad. Listen in as we try to keep our cool and Freesia almost makes it through the whole episode without crying, almost. Huge thanks to Tamlyn for being so gracious and so generous with her time and storytelling. Truly a best quality heart.

Why Do Hacks Feel the Need to Destroy Everything This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl review the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender Series from Netflix and the Warner Bros. feature film Dune: Part 2. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 AtLAB: 5:44 Dune Part 2: 37:28 Avatar the Last Airbender (Season 1) (Netflix) Out of 10 This Really is the Story of the Ember Island Players Darryl: 4.5/10 Brian: 4/10 Summary In the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix, Aang, a young Airbender who has been frozen in an iceberg for 100 years, awakens to find the world ravaged by the Fire Nation. As the Avatar, the only individual capable of mastering all four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, and Air), Aang embarks on a journey to restore balance to the world. He joins forces with siblings Katara, a water bender, and Sokka, a talented Southern Water Tribe warrior, and together they face challenges and adventures as Aang trains to hone his bending abilities and fulfill his destiny. This remix of the beloved animated series bastardizes the core elements of the original story while presenting it through a live-action lens. Casting Choices: Some viewers find certain actors, particularly the young leads, to be well-cast and embody the characters’ personalities effectively. Negatives: Pacing and Storytelling Choices: Some critics found the pacing of the first season to be slow and felt the show condensed plot points from the original series, potentially hindering character development and impacting the overall story flow. Deviation from the Source Material: While some viewers appreciate the show’s attempt to adapt the story for a live-action format, others felt certain changes to the narrative or character arcs were unnecessary and took away from the essence of the original. Budget The budget for the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix is reported to be $15 million per episode. This means the entire first season, consisting of eight episodes, reportedly cost $120 million to produce. Dune: Part 2 (2024) Out of 10 Why Did Lady Jessica Go Full Super-Villains Darryl: 6.25/10 Brian: 4/10 Summary Picking up after the events of the first film, Paul Atreides seeks refuge with the Fremen, the indigenous people of the harsh desert planet Arrakis. He continues to develop his prophetic visions and abilities, while also forming a bond with Chani, a young Fremen warrior. Meanwhile, the Harkonnens, House Atreides’s bitter rivals, remain in control of Arrakis and continue to exploit its valuable resource, spice. Paul grapples with the weight of his destiny and the potential for a violent future. He must navigate complex alliances and face difficult choices as he ponders the potential consequences of his actions. The film explores themes of revenge, destiny, and the struggle for power. It delves deeper into the intricate world-building of Frank Herbert’s original novel, introducing new characters and factions. Cast and Crew Director: Denis Villeneuve, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts based on Frank Herbert’s novel. Main Cast: – Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, the young heir who embraces his destiny among the Fremen. – Zendaya reprises her role as Chani, the Fremen warrior who becomes Paul’s love interest. – Rebecca Ferguson is back as Lady Jessica, Paul’s Bene Gesserit mother. – Javier Bardem returns as Stilgar, the leader of the Sietch Tabr Fremen tribe. – Josh Brolin portrays Gurney Halleck, Paul’s loyal warrior mentor. New additions to the cast include: – Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the cunning nephew of Baron Harkonnen. – Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, the Emperor’s daughter with a complex role to play. – Christopher Walken joins the cast in an undisclosed role. – Léa Seydoux as Lady Fenring. Other notable crew members: – Hans Zimmer returns to compose the score, building upon the unique soundscape established in the first film. – Greig Fraser serves as the cinematographer, capturing the vast landscapes and intricate details of Arrakis. Dune: Part Two – Production and Budget Production: – Development for Dune: Part Two began after Legendary Entertainment acquired the film and television rights for Dune in 2016. – Director Denis Villeneuve signed on in 2017 with the intention of making a two-part adaptation due to the novel’s complexity. – Originally, production contracts were only secured for the first film. The green light for the sequel depended on the first film’s success. – Despite Villeneuve’s concerns about the sequel’s green light due to the first film’s hybrid release (theatrical and HBO Max), it received the go-ahead, allowing them to move forward. – Filming for Dune: Part Two took place primarily in Jordan, Italy, and Hungary, with additional locations utilized as needed. Budget: – The estimated budget for Dune: Part Two is $190 million, which is significantly higher than the first film’s $165 million budget. – This increased cost can be attributed to several factors, including: – Expanding the scope of the story and world-building compared to the first film. – Bringing in new and established actors with higher salaries. – Creating complex visual effects and sets to bring the fictional universe to life.

Veteran American actor Tamlyn Tomita is my guest this week to make sure that as many people as possible know about East West Players' last production of their 57th season Spring Awakening. This revolutionary musical won the "Best Musical" Tony Award on Broadway, and I can promise you that Director Tim Dang's version at the David Henry Hwang Theater in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, is Broadway-quality! Tamlyn and husband Daniel Blinkoff play all of the adult roles quite convincingly, and the ensemble cast of young actors will have you questioning whether this production is truly their professional debut. Head over to www.eastwestplayers.org to find a performance that matches your schedule and purchase your tickets.
Artist Jasmine Cho paints images of both well-known and forgotten Asian Americans. But she does not use paper or canvas to create her art. She uses cookies. Cho, who is also a baker, said the sweet treats “are the perfect platform for education, activism and healing…”Cho 也是一名面包师,他说这些甜点“是教育、行动主义和治愈的完美平台……”The 39-year-old Korean American artist calls herself a “cookie activist.” She said she believes her art comes from a feeling of not belonging when she was young. Cho has gained fans over the last several years for her detailed cookie faces. Actors Awkwafina, Daniel Dae Kim and Tamlyn Tomita are among those who have praised her cookie designs. The city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Cho has lived since 2009, even honored her with a “Jasmine Cho Day” in 2020.Cho 自 2009 年以来一直居住在宾夕法尼亚州匹兹堡市,甚至在 2020 年为她设立了“Jasmine Cho Day”。Back in 2016, Cho was busy making cookies for her online bakery, Yummyholic. She decorated cookies with faces for a friend's birthday party. The cookies received attention on social media. Soon, others wanted her cookies, too. Cho grew up in Southern California and New Mexico. She said she noticed when Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were not represented in movies, television shows or even history books. It made her question her own sense of belonging in America. “That was always a pain point for me growing up,” said Cho. “So, I kind of always had this question: ‘I wonder if I could use this point of joy for me to address this pain point?'"“这一直是我成长过程中的一个痛点,”Cho 说。 “所以,我总是有这样一个问题:‘我想知道我是否可以利用这一点快乐来解决这个痛点?'”Cookies, she said, were the answer.她说,饼干就是答案。A few months after making her first cookie faces, Cho held her first showing. She made cookies of Asian American Pittsburgh natives like actor Ming-Na Wen. She also made one of Leah Lizarondo, the founder of 412 Food Rescue. The organization decreases food waste in over 25 cities in the U.S. and Canada by giving unsold food to people in need.在制作第一张曲奇脸几个月后,Cho 举办了她的第一场演出。 她为像演员温明娜这样的亚裔美国人匹兹堡本地人制作饼干。 她还制作了 412 Food Rescue 的创始人 Leah Lizarondo 之一。 该组织通过向有需要的人提供未售出的食物,减少了美国和加拿大超过 25 个城市的食物浪费。Lizarondo remembers how surprised she was to find out that Cho had made her into a cookie face. For the Filipino American, the honor was not a waste of food.Lizarondo 记得当她发现 Cho 把她变成了一张饼干脸时,她是多么的惊讶。 对于这位菲律宾裔美国人来说,这份荣誉并不是浪费食物。“I shared it as widely as I could as I was so proud to be among the people she did cookie portraits of,” Lizarondo said by email.Lizarondo 在电子邮件中说:“我尽可能广泛地分享了它,因为我很自豪能成为她制作饼干肖像的人之一。”Cho said, “It felt like a sort of superpower.” She had an “aha moment” of how to use her great power with great responsibility.Cho 说:“感觉就像一种超能力。” 她有一个“顿悟时刻”,知道如何在承担重大责任的情况下使用她的强大力量。Cho spends between four and six hours on each cookie face. She draws the cookie face by hand, fills it in with icing and then lets it dry.Cho 在每个饼干表面上花费了四到六个小时。 她用手画出曲奇饼的表面,填上糖霜,然后晾干。Her art has taken her to interesting places. In 2019, she wrote and drew images for a children's book, Role Models Who Look Like Me. In the last few years, she has made over 20 virtual and in-person appearances at universities, schools and other gatherings. She also leads cookie-decorating workshops.她的艺术将她带到了有趣的地方。 2019 年,她为一本儿童读物《长得像我的榜样》创作和绘画。 在过去的几年里,她在大学、学校和其他聚会上进行了 20 多次虚拟和面对面的露面。 她还领导饼干装饰工作坊。Her favorite thing is when young Asian Americans feel empowered by her work.她最喜欢的事情是年轻的亚裔美国人感受到她的工作赋予了力量。“They tell me things like, ‘I learned more in your 15-minute talk than I have in my whole class that's about Asian American history,' or something like that,” Cho said.“他们告诉我这样的话,‘我在你 15 分钟的演讲中学到的东西比我在整个班级里学到的关于亚裔美国人历史的东西还多,'或者类似的话,”Cho 说。One of Cho's cookie faces is an image of Betty Ong, a flight attendant who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Ong's niece found Cho's creation on Instagram and contacted her.Cho 的一张饼干脸是 Betty Ong 的照片,她是一名在 9 月 11 日恐怖袭击中丧生的空姐。 Ong 的侄女在 Instagram 上找到了 Cho 的作品并联系了她。Cho said, “For a family member to reach out and just thank me for sharing her story in the way that I did ... reminding me of the tenderness that comes with this work, the importance of it."Cho 说:“对于一个家庭成员伸出援手并感谢我以我所做的方式分享她的故事......提醒我这项工作带来的温柔,以及它的重要性。”

Welcome to another 'beta' episode of a brand new show with May Lee, Kelly Hu and Tamlyn Tomita, or MKT!* On this episode, we unveil the official title of the show and why we chose it! We also catch up on our recent travels, which include a serious sailing adventure, a festival in Okinawa that only happens every 5 years and wine tasting in Paso Robles with the fur babies. We also try and unpack the results of the midterm elections. IMPORTANT NOTE: This episode was recorded just hours before the GOP clinched control of the House and a day before Speaker Nancy Pelosi stepped down as Democratic leader. The star of this episode, however, is none other than the late, great, gorgeous Anna May Wong. She just became the first Asian American to be featured on U.S. currency, but do people really know her full story? We invited Professor Shirley Lim, an expert in all things Anna May, to dig deeper into the life of the trailblazing actress, fashion icon and activist. Show Notes:Professor Shirley Lim's books,"Anna May Wong: Performing the Modern""A Feeling of Belonging: Asian American Women's Public Culture, 1930–1960"*Shoes Off Inside will soon migrate to its own platform under the new title. We will make this as seamless as possible when it happens!
Something's brewing and it's pretty damn exciting! A brand new show is in the works with hosts May Lee, Tamlyn Tomita and Kelly Hu!! Tamlyn, of course, was in the first, groundbreaking movie in 1993 so she tells us what she can! We also cover the reemergence of Constance Wu and her accusations of sexual harassment, cancel culture and the blame game. And we dig into the importance of the upcoming Midterm Elections with Asian Americans Advancing Justice president John Yang. With anti-Asian sentiment still plaguing AANHPIs and democracy on the brink, what do we need to know before November 8th?If you need more information and resources related to the topics in this show, please follow the links below:https://988lifeline.orghttps://www.nami.org/homehttps://www.advancingjustice-aajc.orghttps://apiavote.org

Ageism is no joke, especially for women and CTV news anchor Lisa LaFlamme is the latest victim who was punished for embracing her true self by going gray. As a fellow silver-haired broadcast journalist, this story got May really fired up so she called up her fellow fabulous silver sisters, Kelly Hu and Tamlyn Tomita, to break down the stereotypes of what women are supposed to look like, according to age old societal definitions (created mostly by men). Kelly, Tamlyn and May share their experiences with insecurity in their youth and how they grew into their own mature identity. Their stories are honest, authentic, powerful and rarely spoken about in such a public way, especially by AAPI women. We need to change the narrative about women and aging and it starts with this episode!
“This film makes me question so many of my own beliefs — what it means to be a Chinese American woman. What might seem stereotypical, but may be very culturally true.” MMovies returns to talk about important films that explain the minority experience for the rest of our majority ears. THE JOY LUCK CLUB - however you may feel about it - is THE original Asian American movie. This 1993 film adapts the 1989 novel of the same name by Amy Tan. An Asian American drama about the relationships between Chinese American women and their Chinese immigrant mothers - the film features 50 women of the 60 credited roles. Directed by Wayne Wang and produced by Oliver Stone - the film stars Tsai Chin, Kieu Chinh, Lisa Lu, France Nuyen, Rosalind Chao, Lauren Tom, Tamlyn Tomita, and Ming-Na Wen - and centers on four older women, all Chinese immigrants living in San Francisco, who meet regularly to play mahjong, eat, and tell stories. Hidden pasts are revealed, and the clash of Chinese and American cultures is on full display as each strives to understand their own heritage and identity. The Joy Luck Club is an important cultural touchstone that people have VERY strong perspectives about - positive and negative - so along with longtime FrieMMd of the Pod (and one of our favorite Canadians) Melissa Haughton - we interrogate our feelings on the film, as well as reflect on our own observations and upbringings, and you may be surprised where we net out about this classic... Welcome to Open Form, a new weekly film podcast hosted by award-winning writer Mychal Denzel Smith. Each week, a different author chooses a movie: a movie they love, a movie they hate, a movie they hate to love. Something nostalgic from their childhood. A brand-new obsession. Something they've been dying to talk about for ages and their friends are constantly annoyed by them bringing it up. In this episode, Mychal talks to Ashley C. Ford (Somebody's Daughter) about the 1993 film The Joy Luck Club, starring Tsai Chin, Kieu Chinh, Lisa Lu, France Nuyen, Rosalind Chao, Lauren Tom, Tamlyn Tomita, and Ming-Na Wen, and directed by Wayne Wang. It's a love story, a family story, AND a history that probably got sold on the strength of Dennis Quaid's involvement...even though he really shouldn't be Great White Savioring it up with the windows closed in the first place, but we do find a handful of things to like about 1991's Come See The Paradise . It's from the director of Birdy, Fame, and other fondly remembered properties; it's also miscast, oddly scored, and about 20 more minutes of reading The Japanese Internment Camps: An Explainer than we needed. So, we talked about Quaidspiracy theories, why DQ didn't play the Joker, and butt ratios instead. Cobra Kai is back with Season 3 of its show and this time it is being released on the Netflix platform after the first two season were released on YouTube Red. The show continues the story of Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso along with their students and family members after the all out brawl at the end of Season 2. Daniel’s car dealership is beginning to tank so he must return to Okinawa, Japan to promote his business. While there, he reunites with his old fling Kumiko, and ex-rival Chozen Toguchi. While Daniel and Chozen trade karate techniques, Johnny helps Miguel regain his strength after coming out of his coma. With Daniel and Johnny occupied, the students of Cobra Kai Dojo grow stronger and more violent as they more faithfully follow their merciless sensei, John Kreese. Beloved by audiences around the world, The Joy Luck Club (dir. Wayne Wang) has provoked heated debates about race, gender, and representation. Twenty-five years after its release, and on the heels of the recent success of Crazy Rich Asians, actress Tamlyn Tomita joined UBC Assistant Professor JP Catungal (Social Justice Institute) in conversation. Ms. Tomita shares her favourite memories from production (and the ones she can't share), which scene was improvised, what she learned from the mothers in the film, and why you need to know yourself first before you can tell other people's stories. The Joy Luck Club retrospective screening was presented by the Asian Canadian & Asian Migration Studies Program and the Department of Theatre & Film, with support from the Faculty of Arts and alumni UBC. Recorded January 16, 2019, at Frederic Wood Theatre in Vancouver, BC. This recording was produced by the University of British Columbia. We are pleased to be able to share it with you, our alumni and subscribers.
