It's our annual updates episode! Thanks to Kelsey and Torin for the extra information about ultraviolet light, and thanks to Caleb for suggesting we learn more about the dingo! I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we have our annual updates episode, and we'll also learn about a mystery animal called the lava bear! As usual, a reminder that I don't try to update everything we've ever talked about. That would be impossible. I just pick new information that is especially interesting. After our episode about animals and ultraviolet light, I got a great email from Kelsey and Torin with some information I didn't know. I got permission to quote the email, which I think you'll find really interesting too: “You said humans can't see UV light, which is true, however humans can detect UV light via neuropsin (a non-visual photoreceptor in the retina). These detectors allow the body to be signaled that it's time to do things like make sex-steroid hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. (Spending too much time indoors results in non-optimal hormone levels, lowered neurotransmitter production, etc.) “Humans also have melanopsin detectors in the retina and skin. Melanopsin detectors respond to blue light. Artificial light (LEDs, flourescents, etc) after dark entering the eye or shining on the skin is sensed by these proteins as mid-day daylight. This results in an immediate drop in melatonin production when it should be increasing getting closer to bedtime.” And that's why you shouldn't look at your phone at night, which I am super bad about doing. Our first update is related to ultraviolet light. A study published in October of 2023 examined hundreds of mammals to see if any part of their bodies glowed in ultraviolet light, called fluorescence. More than 125 of them did! It was more common in nocturnal animals that lived on land or in trees, and light-colored fur and skin was more likely to fluoresce than darker fur or skin. The white stripes of a mountain zebra, for example, fluoresce while the black stripes don't. The study was only carried out on animals that were already dead, many of them taxidermied. To rule out that the fluorescence had something to do with chemicals used in taxidermy, they also tested specimens that had been flash-frozen after dying, and the results were the same. The study concluded that ultraviolet fluorescence is actually really common in mammals, we just didn't know because we can't see it. The glow is typically faint and may appear pink, green, or blue. Some other animals that fluoresce include bats, cats, flying squirrels, wombats, koalas, Tasmanian devils, polar bears, armadillos, red foxes, and even the dwarf spinner dolphin. In episode 20 we talked about Delcourt's giant gecko, which is only known from a single museum specimen donated in the 19th century. In 1979 a herpetologist named Alain Delcourt, working in the Marseilles Natural History Museum in France, noticed a big taxidermied lizard in storage and wondered what it was. It wasn't labeled and he didn't recognize it, surprising since it was the biggest gecko he'd ever seen—two feet long, or about 60 cm. He sent photos to several reptile experts and they didn't know what it was either. Finally the specimen was examined and in 1986 it was described as a new species.

Analysis of data collected from the crew of SpaceX's Inspiration4 mission reveals that short duration spaceflight can result in physiological changes similar to those seen on longer spaceflights. While a mix of home and in-person working became the norm for many post-pandemic, the impacts of this approach on workers' outputs remains hotly debated and difficult to test scientifically. To investigate the effects of hybrid working, researchers randomly selected 1,612 people at a company in China to work in the office either five days a week or three. Author Joseph Falank's new novel, “Renewal” (Sept. 13 through BHC Press) is a powerfully written and incredibly honest story of a family coming to grips with the reality that their patriarch is afflicted with Alzheimer's. Here's the synopsis of the story: It's been two years since aspiring novelist and English teacher Malcolm Aton has had any contact with his family. Ever since his divorce and the loss of his mother to cancer, his relationship with his father has been strained. When he receives an urgent text from his brother, he learns the devastating news that their father's memory issues have progressed. He's now violent and at the end stages of Alzheimer's disease. Although confrontation with his father is imminent, Malcolm reluctantly agrees to return home for the weekend and take on the mantle of caregiver while they contend with the difficult decision of how to care for their father. As is the case with everything involving his family, nothing goes as expected. Joseph and I talk about the relationship that Malcolm and his father has and what it is like to reconnect after two years. He sheds light on how Malcolm adjusts to being his father's caregiver and the impact of their roles being reversed. We also talk about the affect Alzheimer's can have on the patient's loved ones and the new challenges they will have to overcome. This is Joseph's fifth book and we discuss the subjects of “The Painted Lady,” “Disconnected,” and others and the inspirations which led to them. Personally, I cannot wait to read “Disconnected.” He also shares some of his ideas for future works.

I originally learned the botanical name of this native plant as Eupatorium greggii, but it is now Conoclinum dissectum. It's neat that the tribute to Josiah Gregg, an adventurer, explorer, naturalist and plant collector of the early 1800s, is still part of the common name Gregg's mistflower. The photos were taken at a marvelous rocky plain near the Dragoon Mountains. It's an area where I find all sorts of interesting plants and this large stand of Gregg's mistflower was fabulous. I believe that's a Painted Lady butterfly visiting the flowers. That’s only one of several species of butterflies seen on the flowers. Oh, and that bouquet on our table lasted several days!

Also, Michael incorrectly states that wine is made from berries, when it is typically made from grapes. This was a grievous mistake and we offer our sincerest apologies to any of our listeners who happen to be wine connoisseurs. Won't happen again. Join the conversation at avatarfancast@gmail.com

Andy grew up in Chesapeake (Great Bridge), Virginia with a simple story of great parents, 3 brothers (Danny, Greg, and Paul), and a wonderful group of extended family and friends. Andy's parents, Dr. Juan and Mary Montero, raised him to have a love and compassion for people and a love for food. He grew up helping in the family kitchen and creating after school snacks for himself and his brothers. Andy worked at a local restaurant in Great Bridge, called Court House Café, and fell in love with this industry. Johnson and Wales University was his college of choice, and from there Andy learned all he could about this world he now calls “normal”. Andy spent his mornings at school, and hs nights working in and sharpening his skills at numerous Hampton Road's establishments like the “The Painted Lady” and “Cypress Point Country Club”. Andy had the pleasure of meeting and learning from talented chef instructors, traveling to Italy to study, and meeting his future bride and business partner! Another episode of The Avatar Returns is here to teach you a lesson...ON YOUR FACE! The boys fight over who gets to be Dock, Xu, and Bushi as they critique chapter 303, "The Painted Lady." In 304, "Sokka's Master," our favorite "regular guy" gets a cool meteor sword, and Eric enrolls in Tae Bo by Iroh. And finally, it's Beach Blanket Zuko in chapter 305, "The Beach." AJ is still iffy on Sideways Eye Guy; Eric drops knowledge on the Chakra Theory of bending sub-styles; and is Avatar: The Last Airbender actually just a retooling of Daria? Next: we get morbid and creepifying with chapters 306-308, "The Avatar and The Firelord," "The Runaway," and "The Puppetmaster." The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 11:15) Main Topic (11:15 - 1:15:30) Outro / Next (1:15:30 - 1:17:39)
There seems to have been some confusion among the ranks of hosts this week. To clarify, we are only discussion two chapters this time around, not three. Okay, Eric? Only two. But thanks for the enthusiasm, son. The two (not three, two) chapters we discuss this week are 301, "The Awakening," which picks up a few weeks after the tragic events in the Book Two finale, with Aang and Co. traveling on a stolen Fire Navy ship and the entire world believing the Avatar is dead (isn't that great?!), and 302, "The Headband," or as we like to call it, "Footloose in the Fire Nation." The boys chat about Aang's hair, Papa Sokka and Mama Katara, Dance Dance Revolution, and Sideways Eye Guy. ZUKO BOMB! Also, phone lines are open for listeners to weigh in on how Paul should live his life going forward. Vote early and often! [Ed. Note: there are no phone lines, just the e-mail.] Next: okay Eric, NOW we're gonna talk about three chapters. 303-305, "The Painted Lady," "Sokka's Master," and "The Beach." The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 09:00) Main Topic (09:00 - 1:04:20) Outro / Next (1:04:20 - 1:06:42)
