In this episode of The Jaunty Mantis, we riff on mechanical ways to make dinosaurs stand out at the table — beyond simple reskins or bigger HP pools. They cover size & reach, zone-based combat, fear/horror mechanics, animal companions and mounts, pack tactics, and inspiration from other RPG systems (Rifts, Exalted, 4E, Runehammer).

We continue our look at moral panics over Dungeons & Dragons by taking a closer look at Patricia Pulling, the founder of Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons (BADD), and the terrible tragedy that sparked her personal crusade against D&D.Content Warning: Discussion of suicide. Josefine shares how role-play creates safe, expressive spaces that boost self-esteem and break from anxiety. She recounts clients using fantasy roles to assert themselves and even physical rehab sessions transformed into Minecraft sword battles. Together, they discuss “bleed,” storytelling's power to build empathy, and how shared narratives deepen therapeutic bonds. This week! Join Candace, Liv and Jeremy for a much-needed conversation about one of fantasy's laziest tropes: “evil races.” From the reductive storytelling of Good vs. Evil to the way TTRPGs treat so-called monster races as throwaway enemies, used more for easy combat than meaningful storytelling, the Halflings break down how these shortcuts feed into fantasy racism, and why it's time to move past them. Plus, a look at how Star Trek gets it right by exploring difference without defaulting to moral absolutes. Jolene was looking at TTRPG topics and came across a Reddit Post where a user was asking why people consider playing TTRPGs a "niche" hobby. The original poster was quite surprised that people thought that TTRPGs are not that popular. There were quite a few replies to that post and most were proposing that TTRPGs are not that big of a deal in the hobby sphere. A number of TTRPG players in the U.S. that was quoted quite often was 50 million people in the U.S. play or have played TTRPGs. Saul wondered where this 50 million stat came from. So Saul went down the numbers rabbit hole. He found an article about number of players in the U.S. Then, Saul considered the number of participants of other hobbies in the U.S. The result is this episode about whether TTRPGs are a Big Deal or still a Niche hobby. You're listening to Bardtenders! In this episode of "The Mixing Glass", Ross Struss discusses starting the Bards and Barrels podcast, favorite Dungeons & Dragons memories, and the pursuit of discovering and drinking amazing craft beer. ------------Ross Struss is one of the three hosts and co-founders of Bards and Barrels. His journey into D&D started with board games, eventually leading to TTRPGs, where he found a passion for stepping into character and immersing himself in the worlds they build. No stranger to the mic, Ross honed his skills as a play-by-play announcer and DJ during his time in college. His endless enthusiasm for chatting about the things he loves makes him a natural podcast host. When he's not smiting foes as a Paladin, you'll find him diving into all things nerdy—Star Wars, Magic: The Gathering, Lord of the Rings, and more—not to mention having a craft beer with friends.Bards and Barrels was born from the simple joy of sitting around, drinks in hand, discussing epic campaigns. What started as casual conversations grew into a show where Ross and his co-hosts share their love for D&D one laugh, story, and critical hit at a time.----------Don't miss out on any of the action! Have you ever noticed that in real life, you can't just say, “I take a long rest” and wake up eight hours later fully healed, your fridge restocked, and your inbox cleared? If only. Instead, you wake up groggy, your cat's screaming, and somehow your wizard spell slots are still gone. Well, tabletop RPGs aren't much better. Pacing and rest mechanics are the part of D&D, Pathfinder, and other RPGs where your party argues for 30 minutes about whether to camp in the murder dungeon, or limp back to town because someone stubbed their toe. And let's be honest—no one wants to play the “Five Minute Adventuring Day” where your heroes spend more time napping than actually adventuring. Show Notes Every Dungeon Master, Game Master, and table of players eventually wrestles with one of the most elusive beasts in tabletop RPGs: pacing. How do you keep the story moving, the tension high, and the action balanced—while still letting your players rest their weary hit points and spell slots? In this remastered episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, Tyler, Randall, and Ash dive into pacing and rest mechanics in tabletop RPGs, exploring how rules like short rests and long rests in Dungeons & Dragons, or Encounter Mode vs Exploration Mode in Pathfinder 2e, shape the tempo of campaigns. We'll dig into the ways pacing affects encounter design, narrative arcs, and character development, and how rest mechanics in Pathfinder and D&D can make or break the flow of the game. From gritty survival pacing where every rest is a gamble, to fast-paced cinematic RPG storytelling where players hardly stop to breathe, we cover strategies for keeping your table engaged without letting fatigue—or rules confusion—drag the campaign to a crawl. If you've ever asked yourself: “How many encounters should happen before a long rest in D&D?” “How do I keep players from spamming the five-minute adventuring day?” “What's the balance between story pacing and resource management?” …this episode has you covered. Whether you're a seasoned DM running epic campaigns in D&D 5e, a Pathfinder 2e GM wrangling Encounter Mode pacing, or just curious how to keep your RPG sessions balanced and fun, this discussion will give you tools, laughs, and maybe a little existential dread about resting in real life. Key Takeaways Pacing is everything: The tempo of encounters, story beats, and rests directly impacts campaign flow. Rest mechanics shape tension: Rules like short vs long rests in D&D or daily recovery in Pathfinder 2e can either encourage resource management or invite “rest spamming.” Encounter pacing drives drama: How many encounters players face before resting sets the stakes—whether it feels like a survival grind or a cinematic sprint. Balance mechanics with story: Great pacing blends mechanical tension (hit points, spell slots, conditions) with narrative urgency (villains, clocks, or looming disasters). The 5-minute adventuring day problem is real: Creative pacing strategies help DMs push beyond it. Different RPG systems, different solutions: What works for D&D pacing may not work for Pathfinder rest mechanics or other TTRPGs—adapt to your system. Player expectations matter: Some groups love slow-burn exploration, others want fast action. Pacing tools let you tune the campaign to your table. Have you ever noticed that in real life, you can't just say, "I take a long rest" and wake up eight hours later fully healed, your fridge restocked, and your inbox cleared? And let's be honest—no one wants to play the "Five Minute Adventuring Day" where your heroes spend more time napping than actually adventuring. In this episode, we're tackling the eternal question: how do you keep the action exciting without turning your campaign into a sleep study? Listen to RPGBOT.Podcast on YouTube Before we dive in—did you know the RPGBOT.Podcast has a massive archive of episodes now available on YouTube? In a world of expansive IPs, player agency, and multi-format storytelling, how do you keep a narrative consistent without strangling its potential? This week on The Corner of Story and Game, we sit down with Jesse Scoble, a veteran narrative designer and worldbuilder whose career spans Assassin's Creed, Hyper Scape, City of Heroes, and even TTRPGs and now comics! We explore the art and craft of narrative canon, and the question "what survives when a story jumps from game to comic to RPG and back again?" Jesse shares his experiences writing for different formats, how player agency complicates authorial intent, and what it means to write "between the lines" of existing universes. Along the way, we may talk a bit about his new comic endeavour, Dead Money.Whether you're working on your own transmedia project or just fascinated by how worlds evolve across platforms, this episode is packed with insight.

Text us, PsyclithidsHave you ever made a choice for your D&D character that felt like a betrayal? You know, when your Lawful Good Paladin lies, or your nature-loving Ranger fells a sacred tree? We'll explore why our brains seek consistency, how to recognize dissonance in your own roleplaying, and—most importantly—how to use it as a powerful tool for character development. This isn't about making your game less fun; it's about making it more meaningful. Whether you're a player looking to create a more complex hero or a DM crafting dilemmas that will challenge your players, this episode is a must-listen.Join us as we explore how to turn those moments of doubt into unforgettable character arcs.In this episode, you'll discover:What cognitive dissonance is and why it's so uncomfortable. How to spot it in your own D&D games."Tricks of the Trade" for both players and DMs to embrace this psychological concept for richer storytelling. Keywords: Dungeons and Dragons, D&D, TTRPG, Psychology, Cognitive Dissonance, Roleplaying, Character Development, Dungeon Master, DM Tips, Player Advice, D&D Tips, RPG, tabletop games.Amazon Link to Session Zero Amazon Link to The Player's Handbook for Real Life Patreon EtsyLinkTree Session ZeroThe Player's Handbook for Real LifePodcast Art by Kyle Baerlocher Support the showEmail: DungeonsDragonsPsychology@gmail.com Website: http://www.dungeonsdragonspsychology.com LinkTree https://linktr.ee/dungeonsdragonspsychology My Etsy Shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/Games4GamesAmazon Link to Session Zero https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BL52LB1X Amazon Link to The Player's Handbook for Real Life https://a.co/d/5x6PSLm Amazon Link to The Art of Living Fully https://a.co/d/3h32fC0 Amazon Link to The Little Book of Daily Rituals https://a.co/d/eRYMEFR Facebook: @dungeonsdragonspsychology https://www.facebook.com/dungeonsdragonspsychology/ Insta: @dungeons_dragons_psychology https://www.instagram.com/dungeons_dragons_psychology/
The World of Eora: an Avowed & Pillars of Eternity Lore Podcast
The World of Eora is a news & lore podcast about the fantasy setting created by Obsidian Entertainment for their cRPG series, Pillars of Eternity, and their action RPG: Avowed. This week is more of a "stream of consciousness" talk, with lore discussed throughout. A looooong time ago I talked about infusing the world of Eora into tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons (specifically 5th Edition). However, what if you were playing games more in line with the OSR ("Old School Renaissance") style of play, such as Cairn, which I've recently gotten into. It's a much less measured approach, but one that seems more intuitive...and one that seems easier with Avowed, I might add.So I discuss the biggest ideas in Eora that we see in the games that need to be considered when approaching OSR style TTRPGs. This might be the first in a couple episodes dedicated to this topic, but it won't be a long-running thing, since we want to focus on different lore here over time. But I think it's valuable nonetheless.worldofeora@gmail.com@worldofeorako-fi.com/worldofeora
