The reboots, remakes, and sequels of Avatar: The Last Airbender only reminds us that people love the animated television show and the characters who reside in the world. Out of all of the main and beloved characters (Aang, Katara, Sooka, Toph, Zuko) people either know or have headcannoned their futures as adults, couples, and parents. But there has always been one character that even the official sequel show, The Legend of Korra, has never shined a light on. Azula. Fire Lord Ozai's daughter. Prince Zuko's sister. Firebending master. And ultimately arrested and taken away never to be seen again at the end of the show. On this episode we continue our spotlight on DEV PATEL with the riveting, moving, and deeply affecting LION. Directed by Garth Davis about the life of Saroo Brierly.
In the new live-action adaptation of Airbender, Uncle Iroh is reflecting on the suffering of his nephew, Prince Zuko, who has been banished from home for not being as cutthroat and ruthless as his father would like him to be. Zuko tries very hard to impress his father, but Zuko has a big heart, and it makes the task impossible.Zuko lives his life day to day not being his true self, not letting that heart show. The reason is simple. Showing his heart got him hurt very badly when his father laid fire to half of his face as a punishment for it.It breaks Iroh's heart. Zuko should not have to wear the mask of a brute to make his father proud. That is a burden no child should have to carry. So Iroh begins to speak about the power of Masks. Here is what he says:It's amazing how far we'll go to hide our true selves from the world.Perhaps it's because we don't want people to know how much they really mean to us. Which is funny.Because the truth is, we would do anything for them. We'd travel incredible distances, risk our lives, even fight monsters. But I suppose it can be scary to admit you need people. Some might see that as a weakness, a liability. After all, what greater pain is there than losing someone you love?Or worse, finding out someone you love has left you behind.I guess that's why we feel the need to hide away and protect ourselves. So we put on a mask. It's not hard to understand why. What's hard is knowing that sometimes, the mask is who we really are. What masks do you wear? I wear a few.Not all are bad. Some are good. When I do TV or public speaking I put on the mask of a confident person. It's necessary because I am terrified. The mask gives me some needed strength. When I am with my daughter I wear the “Dad Mask”. As Dad, I don't overburden her with my problems, I don't share what's not in the bank account, I don't overplay the fact that 75% of the time I don't know what to do about anything……because she needs the feeling of security. It takes courage to wear that mask as a parent. There will be times when that mask needs to come off, and that will require bravery as well.We play certain roles to stay alive or make it in this world. My hope is that by reading this email today, you'll begin to think about what masks play a role in your life, and be able to at least name them. When you are conscious of what they are, and when you put them on, you'll have better control over their role in your life. But that does take reflection. Take that time today.Geeky Stoics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Matthew Fox reunites with guests Riki Hayashi and Paul Hoppe to wrap up their deep dive into Netflix's live action take on Avatar: The Last Airbender. Did the last two episodes stick the landing or fall short? In the intro, Matthew notes rising excitement across the four days while Riki felt genuine disappointment. Did Paul land closer to one side or the other?Key Discussion Questions:Does Ken Leung deliver one of the all-time great villain performances as Admiral Zhao?Does condensing Katara's waterbending mastery arc shortchange her character growth?Do strong performances help the show transcend uneven writing at times? Is Dallas Liu's Prince Zuko a standout?Did shaping the show for a wider Netflix audience undermine quirks of the original that niche fans loved?Other Questions Tackled:Is the Zuko/Iroh dynamic enhanced by the tearful funeral scene? Was incorporating Northern Water Tribe sexism necessary?Should the missing backstory between Master Pakku and Gran Gran have been included? Will season two deviate more radically from the original animated series?Should training arcs be sacrosanct versus “gifted” natural talent? What direction could Azula's characterization and Lieutenant Jee's arc take? What other Avatar stories could shine in live action down the road?In conclusion, despite significant flaws, Riki and Paul want season two renewed for the cast and crew's sake. But will it stay true to the essence of Avatar going forward? We've started the conversation. Now we want to hear from you!Want to continue the discussion with us? Agree or disagree with what we talked about, or add your own thoughts? We've got options for you!Email: ✉️ Matthew@TheEthicalPanda.com

The release of Netflix's live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender has finally arrived. Join hosts Matthew Fox, Riki Hayashi, and Paul Hoppe for a spoiler-filled discussion of the first two episodes. After initial skepticism and comparison to the original animated series, the hosts agree there is promise but an overall different tone, mood and portrayal of some key characters like Aang and Iroh. However, strong performances shine through from actors like Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and the surprise chemistry between Sokka and Suki. The episode also explores deeper moral issues not introduced in the animated series until much later.Key topics covered:Initial reactions, disappointments and skepticismComparing essence and tone to the original animated seriesDarker, more mature approach including difficult themes and violenceChanges and omissions to Aang's backstory and personalityStandout performances from Zuko, Sokka and Commander Zhao actorsChemistry between Sokka and Suki—a shame she disappearsUnderstanding the Fire Nation's perspective from an early stageStrong effects bringing bending, Appa and Momo to lifeConcerns around age differences and romantic relationshipsCautious optimism for where the story goes nextDespite flaws, most glaring for devoted fans of the original, there remains potential in this new grounded, live-action take on Aang's epic journey. Stay tuned for the hosts' breakdown of episodes 3 and 4 coming soon. We've started the conversation. Now we want to hear from you!Want to continue the discussion with us? All month long January has been FILMUARY here at Gay For Play. This week, we're ending the month by discussing a queer cult classic, the 1999 satirical romantic comedy: But I'm a CheerleaderAnd the boys are not alone this week! We're joined by dear friend of the pod Becca Rowland, who last joined us on our The Last of Us (Part 1) episode last March! Becca's the one who recommended we watch this movie for our last episode of Filmuary, and we're so glad she did, because the three of us have so much to say about this joyful, silly, campy, gay ass movie. But I'm a Cheerleader, directed by Jamie Babbit, stars Natasha Lyonne as Megan Bloomfield, a high school cheerleader who is sent to a conversion therapy camp to "cure" her of her homosexuality. The three of us discuss how the movie satirizes its heavy subject matter with razor-sharp comedy and heart, and how above all else, this movie centers and celebrates queer joy in an incredibly forward-thinking movie for the turn of the millennium. It's got an incredibly diverse cast, knockout performances, and SO many good jokes. (Also, Prince Zuko and RuPaul are in it?) We highly recommend it! Plus it's easy to view online if you wanna give it a watch before listening to our thoughts. Becca Rowland (she/they) is a Chicago-based actor, musician, and improviser. It's a very important first half of a two-part story arc in which Janet and Dante start to get acquainted with The Spirit World! In this key episode of Book One, we meet the understandably grumpy Hei Bai, spend some time with an intimidatingly cool spirit dragon and his “nose hairs," and see a whole lot of Uncle Iroh's hot bath-loving bare skin. Plus: Dante compares Prince Zuko to a couple of beloved vintage detectives, leading to a surprising impression. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

☴ We, who live in the modern world, live in a hectic busy life of constant doing, doing and more doing. To the extent where we may have forgotten why we are doing what we are doing. And this can be draining on our chi 氣 reserves. ☲ Here I use the phrase 'Chi Reserves' because for ninety percent of the people on this earth, that is what they rely upon to live. Apart from the other immediate necessities of air, water and food. ☱ The other ten percent are doing something to replenish themselves by the various mediums available to us. My own small examples are Baguazhang 八卦掌, Qigong 氣功, Tea Time equals Me Time and Wabi-Sabi 侘寂. ☰ By promoting Tea Time equals Me Time, I am in a small way opening up the door for those not doing mindfulness, yoga, meditation, martial arts, et cetera to also replenish their chi 氣, without the need to depend on a vice. ☷ In the television series The Last Airbender, the loveable Uncle Iroh 艾洛, mentor to Prince Zuko, symbolised this way of being. And introduced thousands of people (especially younger people) to this higher vibrational way of life without going too hippie or woo-woo about it. ☶ While not all martial artists like the show and feel it being too light in depth or unrealistic in what can be achieved, reality can sometimes be a hindrance in what is actually possible. While grounding is important, too many have turned it into an earthly tether rather than the bedrock of power it is meant to be. ☵ Whenever Prince Zuko lost his way 道, it was Uncle Iroh's 艾洛 gentle guidance, usually through tea 茶, that helped him find his bearing again. Now it took at least three seasons for it to happen, but it did. ☳ While I cannot speak for other styles, these words above may help in walking the way of Baguazhang 八卦掌道, because there is a point somewhere in it where the practitioner becomes the living embodiment of Baguazhang 八卦掌 itself. And when that point is reached (you will know it) allow Tea Time equals Me Time to help guide you on... Liked what you heard & want to connect with me? Join me at… linkedin.com/in/peterhainzl/

Question: For about an hour, why was the Fire Princess' kingdom Armageddon? Answer: THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT! Four fire-themed characters turn up the heat on one another and the advocates deliver some burns of their own in an appropriately aggressive elemental contest. Will Zuko's fire-bending and general moodiness make him a Smash Fiction avatar? Will Kit's tendency to get SUPER close to the mic when she's angry help her defend her beloved Roy Mustang? Will Chandra Nalaar use her interplanar wizardry and her incredible collection of quotes to burn her enemies to ash? Or will Miles' love of the New Warriors and unending supply of bullshit comic book science allow him to unleash Firestar's true power? Also, MeganBob is the least judgmental judge of all time, Kit reviews Full Metal Alchemist in both manga and anime form, and Miles steadfastly refuses to learn anything about the actual story of Magic: The Gathering.
