When Cheryl was growing up, Cheryl was sexually molested by a trusted family friend. This event shaped how she chose her boyfriends growing up. She would pick the bad boys, or more specifically, men that would treat her badly. This trauma unknowingly started her down the road of alcoholism. During her time on Dancing With the Stars, she gained confidence as a dancer early on. She was the first female professional to win the show and the first professional to win twice and consecutively. She has participated in 23 seasons thus far. This confidence led to heavy drinking while filming, and feeling like when she was drinking her dancing was much better. This eventually spiraled out of control and the drinking actually hindered her performance instead of enhancing it. In regards to her past sexual abuse, she learned that you are not forgiving the person for the action, you are forgiving for yourself to create peace so you can sleep at night. To move on, it was also about consistently going to meetings, and seeking help in a productive and scheduled way. She's not the type to just sit back and hope that help comes her way, she's actively seeking it out now, and hopes to inspire others to do the same. Cheryl has now been sober for 3 years. It's still very new for her to sit and discuss her past traumas, a nerve-racking experience every time, but feels so much better after each session. Now she focuses on being grateful for every aspect of her life and focusing on the good things to make her progress in her fight against her addictions. Cheryl has been looking into what actually causes her hypervigilance at times, she's exploring having a trauma specialist look into what actually triggers this reaction. Lately, she's been exploring different forms of meditation twice a day, and she finds that this has been very helpful in maintaining her sobriety. Her new “Pretty Messed Up Podcast” with AJ McLean and Rene Elizondo focuses on these topics and how each of them is dealing with their daily struggles. Cheryl McNeil Fisher writes books, has used a guide dog from Guiding Eyes for the Blind for over 3 decades, experienced Google’s Project Guideline wearing boots with heels, yes, with heels, and has found community events and programs on-line during the Pandemic. Cheryl shares advice about writing books and the publishing process. Talks about how she made the decision to get a guide dog and her experiences over the years. She also has found the ACB Group Calls that have emerged during the Pandemic to be very satisfying and recommends others to join the community. You don’t have to be an ACB member, she says, just find a time and group and add to the conversation. There is something for everyone. Project Guideline started when Thomas Panek, CEO of Seeing Eyes for the Blind, asked a Google Hackathon group if there was a way to assist a blind runner to run independently. After a few months and some hard work in the Google research labs, Thomas was able to run independently and will soon be further testing Project Guideline in New York’s Central Park during a running event. Cheryl was invited to test the Guideline set-up and she is here to talk about her experience. After losing most of her sight, Cheryl decided to contact Guiding Eyes for the Blind and start the process of getting a guide dog. After a bit of nerves almost stopped her from going, she soon did not want to leave the facilities where she was matched with her first guide dog. Now, on her 4th guide dog, Cheryl talks about her experiences and shares advice to anyone considering getting a guide dog. When Cheryl found the Community Calls from ACB, she began attending the virtual events and now hosts her own meeting as well. She admits she never participated much in events and the Pandemic has changed all of that. Join Cheryl and Jeff Thompson in the Blind Abilities Studio for ta brief look at Cheryl’s journey through blindness, authoring books and being a guide dog owner. Hope you enjoy! Riding Shotgun With Charlie #060 Cheryl & Danny Todd AZ Firearms Gun Freedom Radio Pot of Gold Estate Auctions This interview is one that I’d been waiting 3 years to conduct. When I discovered the Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) was going to be in Phoenix, I knew that I’d be getting Cheryl & Danny Todd to hop in the stagecoach! I’ve been following AZ Firearms, Gun Freedom Radio, and Cheryl & Danny since before I knew them. I met them at GRPC in Tampa in 2016. When Cheryl watched a GunGram, she invited me to be on Gun Freedom Radio. Then at SHOT Show 2017, she took me around to introduce me to everyone. It was a really cool trip! At GRPC in Tampa, I got a photo of me and Cheryl on stage with Massad Ayoob speaking behind us. Just when I went to snap the picture, Alan Gottlieb came up and gave me bunny ears. Since then, everytime Cheryl & I are together, we have to get a selfie with bunny ears. As you’ll hear, Cheryl & Danny have had a long marriage together. They’ve been together for 34 years and they were married, depending on which you ask, either 6 or 9 months after they met. They both grew up with firearms in the house. Growing up Danny’s household “had more guns than they had silverware”. After they were married, on a whim, Danny bought a handgun. . In 3 months he purchased more than 100 guns and was running out of room in the bathroom to store them, he decided that it would be a good idea to open a gun store. Besides AZ Firearms, they opened an estate and liquidation auction house. AND….they just became the only dealer to sell pinball machines in the state of Arizona. Besides the gun store and auction house, they also have Gun Freedom Radio, which is a great show to listen to! https://gunfreedomradio.com/ Cheryl is super active in the firearm community. She’s been a speaker at the GRPC for several years. She is Miss Arizona in The DC Project, and she helps with AMMcon, a segment of and day long event before the GPRC. On November 2, she is slated to be one of the speakers at the Rally for Our 2A Rights in Washington DC. You can get info on this Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/2Arightsrally/ One of the stories that I bring up is when someone tried to turn AZ Firearms into a drive thru gun store by driving INTO the store to steal some guns, but the criminals were not able to get into the store. You can read about that incident here. News story from 3.16.2016 when AZ Firearms had someone crash into their store’s wall. https://www.abc15.com/news/region-west-valley/avondale/car-breaks-through-wall-of-avondale-gun-shop-suspect-still-outstanding-police-say Cheryl, Danny, and I have so many laughs exchanging stories about everything. There’s no way you won’t enjoy this show as we drive from Pot Of Gold Estate Auctions to AZ Firearms. When Cheryl and I first started the podcast we had hours and hours of audio content that we never really did anything with. With months of planning and trying to get our content out we decided to leave the somewhat unplanned content and perhaps use it at a later date. In this bonus episode we are putting a personality quiz to the test, we should mention that Cheryl absolutely despises these types of quizzes, but what comes out of it is...kinda funny... hopefully! This episode is with Cheryl Hunter, who is an expert in resiliency. It is one of my all-time favorite episodes, and it moved me in an extraordinarily meaningful way… When Cheryl was living abroad at the age of 18 she was abducted, beaten, sexually assaulted and held captive for several days. Now she’s devoted her life to helping other people overcome immense challenges. She’s been featured in Forbes, The Huffington Post, Fast Company, CNN and has presented multiple TED Talks that will move you to tears. This conversation with Cheryl is far from sad or upsetting; it’s one of the most inspirational and freeing interviews that I’ve had on this show and I know you’ll leave feeling peace and resilience too. We talk about things like how her experience shaped the rest of her life’s path, as well as how finding the beauty and joy while experiencing pain will allow you to look back and feel grateful for the struggles. Cheryl also shares her resiliency framework and the key strategies that can help us overcome anything. This episode will make you laugh, tear up, find the beauty in the struggle but most of all, it’ll inch you closer to who you really are.
Joining Lee Schneider on the podcast for this episode is Cheryl Clements, the founder and CEO of PieShell. PieShell (http://pieshell.com/) is a crowdfunding platform that emboldens and empowers food and beverage entrepreneurs and enthusiasts. For Cheryl, food is personal.Growing up, she spent summers helping her mother run a pie-making business. Aptly named “The Pie Shell,”it was headquartered where all good startups begin: in the family’s basement. It was from her mother that Cheryl learned what it takes to build a successful food operation. More than that, she learned how communities grow around the food that people share. When Cheryl thought of embarking on her own food venture, she saw a crucial need for a crowdfunding platform that addresses the unique challenges of food and beverage entrepreneurs.
