Ep 199: Kardashian Bonus Show: Season 19 Premiere Recap

While Emma and Julie loved their time recapping throwback episodes, they are so so so happy to be back to break down the Season 19 premiere of Keeping Up with the Kardashians! It's officially the family's second-to-last premiere and there's already so much to discuss. The episode centers around Kourtney's journey of self discovery around her physical intimacy, Khloé and Scott continuing to prank Kris with another round of staged paparazzi photos, and Khloé helping her best friend Malika navigate pregnancy as a single parent.  The episode brings out a lot of interesting questions about the Kardashian’s upbringing (specifically the presence of snuggling and hugging) and Khloé re-experiencing her own pregnancy and relationship through Malika.  We also get to see a better look into Malika's stunning baby shower that took over social media, and more into Kris and Corey's relationship. This episode was so much fun and if it's any indication of the rest of the season, we're in for a good time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Well it's pretty clear what this episode is about! Welcome ya'll to the United States of America. This was a tough one to do. There are 52 states! Emma has been 14 times to 11 states. Darius has been 3 times to 4 different states. There's A LOT to cover. So this episode, we briefly cover all of our visits to the US. Darius fondly remembers (well through the help of photos) eating his first birthday cake in San Francisco. While Emma recounts her many visits to see Cuzzy Bill in Illinois and Wisconsin (from episode 21). We'll have many more episodes with people from and about the US, but join us for this swift little tour around this massive country with plenty of tourism opportunities on offer!

Emma Pask. Award winning vocalist Emma Pask has firmly established herself as one of Australia's favourite voices in Jazz. Her effortless honest stage presence combined with her powerful vocal ability, leaves audiences spellbound and inspired whenever she takes to the stage. While Emma's voice and style are unique, and individually her own, her performances are reminiscent of the classic era of jazz, when swing was top of the charts. Her talent was first spotted by internationally renowned jazz great James Morrison, when she was just 16 years old. She joined his band as the lead vocalist at 16, and went on the spent a solid 20 years touring the world with Morrison. In 2013, Emma was asked to try out for season 2 of The Voice, then promised by Ricky Martin to sing on his album. That didn't happen. She secured a recording contract with Universal, that didn't quiet go to  plan so after an amicable split with the record company, Emma was again an independent artist.  Also add to all the that, there's solo records, tours all around the world, and always high praise for her band and musicians she works with. And did you know that Emma was also the voice of Dorothy the Dinosaur? We talk about all that stuff. I also asked her about vocal technique vocal scatting which is part of Emma's sound.  We were supposed to meet up in person for this podcast, but COVID 19 hit so we connected via video. Please excuse the sound quality in some places.  As the great jazz virtuoso James Morrison says of Emma, “Whilst it's fashionable to be a jazz singer these days, she is the real thing!”   Recorded 05/04/2020.   Episode music: "Georgia on my Mind" - Emma Pask with Sydney All Star Big Band.   https://emmapask.com   https://www.facebook.com/emmapaskmusic/   https://www.instagram.com/emmapask/?hl=en   https://www.youtube.com/user/emmapask   Emma Pask Apple Music   Emma Pask Spotify   Source: Cairns Post - “So for me, entering The Voice was a way for me to create longevity and expose myself, in a way. Emma’s Renaissance | Lynn Elko | 9

When Emma (16) received a cortical visual impairment diagnosis at age four, CVI literature was not widely available. The consensus was “this is just what she has, live with it,” says her mother, Lynn Elko. Her family didn’t know great gains could be made. They didn’t know how to help her learn or meet developmental milestones. Then Lynn discovered what kids with CVI can accomplish with strategic, appropriate interventions that give them visual access to the world. And that changed everything. After six months living with appropriate CVI strategies in place, Emma made tremendous progress in many areas, including feeding, communication, social engagement and literacy. While Emma’s renaissance has overjoyed her family, there is also the heartbreak of not knowing sooner. Over the years they tried ocular approaches, which turned out to be “horrible and so inappropriate,” says Lynn. “We were trying everything. I think that’s what is so hard, that I missed it. And everyone in the field missed it.” The system broke down in many places – we hear this story time and again. “We cannot let other kids be Emma. We cannot let them go without appropriate interventions and services and knowledgeable staff and knowledgeable providers – because there’s hope for our kids. Because they can learn. Because they can make themselves less vulnerable when they make themselves more able. Because they’ll have a better quality of life when they’re given an opportunity to participate in it.” I couldn’t have put it better myself. Resources and events we mention: Fifth Annual Perkins CVI Symposium – July 11-12, 2019, at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA Pediatric Cortical Visual Impairment Society Annual Meeting – July 13, 2019 at Perkins Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Proloquo2Go More on literacy strategies, including bubble words and the importance of color highlighting in Cortical Visual Impairment Advanced Principles by Dr. Christine Roman (2019) and why the iPad is a great tool for CVI on CVI and the iPad

Those who have listened to our show have frequently heard it introduced by a woman with a delightful Irish brogue – that voice belongs to Emma Lloyd.  Emma is a dear friend who was born in Ireland and lived in England during World War 2.  While Emma has been a guest on the show before, this time we asked her to help us celebrate Memorial Day by sharing her memories of Ireland and England during the great “War to end all Wars.”   As Emma shares with us during the interview, we pray that there will never be another war like WWII.  As you will hear throughout the interview, Emma herself is a bit of living history.   Notes to the interview:   Among the many famous people that Emma met, one of them that she refers to is Queen Mary. The Queen Mary that she is referring to here is Mary of Teck, the Queen consort to King George V, Queen Mother of George VI, who was king of England during World War II.   She also speaks of Margaret and Elizabeth. These are, of course, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon,  and her sister who is now Queen Elizabeth II of England.  Both Margaret and Elizabeth remained in England during World War II, despite pressure from the British government to evacuate to Canada.   The “Anthony Eden” she refers to is Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon, who was the British Foreign Secretary between 1935 and 1955, including World War II.  Anthony Eden later went on to become Prime Minister of England between 1955 and 1957.   During the interview she refers to “Doodlebugs” – this was a common nick name for the V1 jet propelled bombs that Germany Launched at Britain during World War II.   Julie and Fran
