Showrunning is a mysterious art form to many so I wanted to bringing he someone who can shine a light on what it takes to be one. Today on the show we have powerhouse show runner, writer, director, producer, and all-around good guy Steven Deknight. Best known for his work across the action, drama, and sci-fi genres on TV shows like Smallville, Spartacus, Daredevil, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Jupiter's Legacy.Realizing his strengths early on in his career, Steven is a jack-of-all-trades who studied acting at the onset of film school transitioned through to writing, playwright, and screenwriting. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was his big break - starting off as writer and story editor on the show, Deknight went on to produce 42 episodes of the Spin-off show, Angel. The vampire Angel, cursed with a soul, moves to Los Angeles and aids people with supernatural-related problems while questing for his own redemption.Steven went on to direct and co-executive produce 66 episodes of the 2001 show, Smallville which set a viewers rating record of 4.34 million viewers per episode and had an amazing 10 seasons run.The series goes along with Clark Kent through his struggles to find his place in the world as he learns to harness his alien powers for good and deals with the typical troubles of teenage life in Smallville, Kansas. In 2009, He briefly wrote, directed, and consulted on the short-lived Dollhouse series. Almost immediately after, Deknight got an offered to executive produce and write the hit sensation and everyone's guilty-pleasure, Spartacus.A fictional historical drama series inspired by, Spartacus, the show focused on Spartacus's obscure early life leading up to the beginning of historical records. We do a deep dive on how Steve brought the Marvel universe's darker and grittier character Daredevil to Netflix that help launch The Defenders superhero on the streaming giant.Blinded as a young boy, Matt Murdock fights injustice by day as a Lawyer and as a street-level superhero by night, in Hell's Kitchen, New York City. His feature-film directorial and writing debut Pacific Rim: Uprising. We go into the weeds on his experience bring a studio tentpole to the big screen while under extreme pressure and restraints.Steve was a blast to chat.Enjoy this conversation with Steve Deknight. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2664729/advertisement

Scooby Doo and the gang been taught us, y'all: the monsters are (almost)  always human. That's our trope this week on ScaryCrit, with Lauren and Jared taking a look at one of the most harrowing horror/suspense films in recent memory, The Boy Behind the Door (2020). A vicious juxtaposition of violence against innocence, this Crit explores the intersectionality that instigates Bobby and Kevin's precarious situation as they try to get out of it, the film's genius, subversive handling of audience expectation and how absolutely dark this trope can be. Trigger warning: like the film it covers, this episode contains discussion of violence against children. Nate didn't want to have an episode on this film, but when he saw an opportunity for a Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode, he decided to bring Jack, a stalwart defender of the film, to convince him it has merit. And he makes a valiant effort, going so far as to compare it to Jun Fukuda's Godzilla films! Does Jack succeed at changing Nate's mind? Listen to find out! Listen to The Drift Space's episode on Pacific Rim. Additional music: “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org. This time, we're taking a bite sized look at the Monster Verse's latest offering in Godzilla vs Kong and along the way we ask what was the point of Mecha Godzilla, why is Hollow Earth now so important to the plot and where does the Monster Verse go from here? Let's dive in…. Cast & Crew • Directed by Adam Wingard: He had previously horror films such as You're Next, Blair Witch and the Netflix adaptation of Death Note. He was announced as the director of this film in 2017 prior to the release of Godzila: King of the Monsters. While the director of that film, Michael Dougherty, did not direct this film, he did help to develop the story and even receives a credit for his work. • Starring Alexander Skarsgard as Dr. Nathan Lind: The eldest son of legendary actor Stellan Skarsgard, Alexander has managed to find himself in compelling yet entertaining films for the past decade beginning with Battleship and The Legend of Tarzan as well as shows like True Blood and The Stand o Rebecca Hall as Dr. Ilene Andrews: She rose to prominence following appearances in films like The Prestige, The Town and Iron Man 3 and really helps to round out the cast o Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes: Henry is approaching superstar status as he has appeared in films like Child's Play, Widows, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Joker. He is set to star in the MCU's latest ensemble film The Eternals as he's slated to portray the first gay superhero in that film series • Also Starring: o Shun Oguri as Ren Serizawa o Eiza Gonzalez as Maia Simmons o Julian Dennison as Josh Valentine o Lance Reddick as Guillerman (Most of his scenes ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor) o Demian Bichir as Walter Simmons • Reprising their roles from King of the Monsters o Kyle Chandler as Dr. Mark Russell o Millie Bobby Brown as Madison Russell o Zhang Ziyi was also set to reprise her role but her role was cut out of the film during editing The Creation of the Monster Verse It seems that creating film universes is the newest trend and while it's not advised to come at the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Monster Verse has done a good job of holding their own in terms of the critical reception and box office returns. The Monster Verse wasn't originally envisioned to become the franchise it eventually became, the reboot of Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards in 2014 was released to major box office numbers as well as some of the most positive reception for a film that year. During that same year, Legendary Pictures had announced they had acquired the rights to the Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah characters as well as the film rights to King Kong. Following the success of Godzilla and the acquisitions of its adversaries, it seemed inevitable that we would eventually see the two Titans clash on screen. Kong did receive a sort of reboot for that franchise in 2017 as Kong: Skull Island was released to similar fanfare that accompanied Godzilla. Godzilla vs Kong was originally announced in October 2015 for a 2020 release which gave Legendary Pictures plenty of time to build their universe with the only other release being Godzilla: King of the Monsters during that time. Legendary also released Pacific Rim: Uprising but this film is not considered to be part of the Monster Verse. In addition to these films, an anime series was announced in January 2021 that would be set on Skull Island and tell stories of shipwrecked characters during their time on the island. The Existence of Hollow Earth While briefly mentioned during previous films in the Monster Verse, Hollow Earth plays a much more prominent role in Godzilla vs Kong as we see that it's how Godzilla was able to navigate the globe quickly and explain the odd climate and creatures that live on Skull Island. The idea of Hollow Earth comes from the year 1692 as Edmond Halley theorized that the Earth is entirely hollow or contains a large space and if the name Halley sounds familiar,

The first being Bright on Netflix because you didn't want to contribute to the Netflix numbers that have watched the film. And the second being the original Fantastic Beasts which Ben said that he didn't see because he thought the trailers looked cheesy. I realize you can't see every movie that comes out, there's just not enough time to do so, but both of those movies are certainly not the worst or obscure movies out there. Isn't it your whole job to criticize movies? That can't be done if you don't see them. I mean if it sucks walk out of the theater or turn of the tv but at least give it a try. YES! YES!"  (Guess what he's going to be for Halloween this year?)   The "twist" that Arnold was a good guy was thrilling for them, and they loved it.  Great experience for them. The funny thing is, I was 16 when T2 came out, is that this wasn't ever a "twist".  Everybody knew when they saw T2 that Arnold was the good guy.  I don't think a single person in 1991 walked into the theater without knowing that.  Cameron does structure it so that it could be a surprise.  He doesn't give it away, although if you really think about the biker bar scene it's pretty obvious.  But knowing the twist didn't diminish the enjoyment or love of the movie.  It's always been one of my favorite action movies of all time. But in terms of your conversation about coming into the movie "pure", this is an example of some real benefit and joy that came from that.  Knowing the twist (that wasn't really a twist) didn't ruin the movie for anyone, but man did it add to the experience for them.   Can you think of any other "twists" that everybody knew about going in, where the movie could of benefited from viewers coming in blind?”   Peter's Picks: Castaway, Terminator Salvation and Terminator: Genysis, (Passengers on the other hand?), 10 Cloverfield Lane? HT's Picks: The Island, Speed Chris' Picks: What Lies Beneath, From Dusk till Dawn   To submit questions to the mailbag, send them to peter@slashfilm.com.
