John Murray was one of the outstanding Reformed theologians of the 1900s. Earnest and serious, he was also deeply affectionate and much beloved of his students and colleagues. On the 50th anniversary of his death in 1975 we take time to consider his life, theology, and legacy to us today.   Featured Resources: – Excerpt from Iain Murray, 'John Murray: A Memorial with Tributes' in Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 143–4 (August/September 1975), Chapter 4, 'Glimpses of Work in the War Years', p. 45–49. N.B. Iain Murray's Life of John Murray (v. i.) represents an enlargement of this memorial with additional information.  – Tribute to Professor Murray by Geoffrey Thomas, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 143–4 (August/September 1975), p. 75–80. – Murray, John, 'The Death of Christ' in The Collected Writings of John Murray: Volume 1, The Claims of Truth (Edinburgh: Banner of Truth Trust, 1976, 2024), p. 36–40.   Note: Professor Murray's response to Geoff Thomas' question about whether the New Testament teaches that every Christian should witness for his Saviour: 'Later in the week he came to me after a lecture and gave me a piece of paper with these textual references written upon it: Acts 8:4; 18:26; 1 Cor. 1:5, 17; 1 Cor. 2:1–5; 1 Cor. 4:15; 1 Cor. 11:4, 5; 2 Cor. 3:8–12; compared with 1 Cor. 4:13; 2 Cor. 5:12, 18, 19; 2 Cor. 8:7; Eph. 4:15, 29; Eph. 5:11; Eph. 6:17; Phil. 1:14–18; 1 Thess. 1:8; Titus 2:3, 4; 1 Peter 3:15.'     Cover art: juxtaposition of a view of Loch Migdale, looking east towards Badbea (pron. In this week's podcast series - PARSHA & PROS, with Rabbi Shlomo Gemara and Avrum Rosensweig, we discuss the Torah portion, Chukat, and delve into the profound themes of mortality and purification. Chukat explores the paradoxical nature of the laws of purity and impurity, highlighting the inevitable confrontation with death and the ritual of the Red Heffer that symbolize spiritual cleansing. Similarly, we talk about Leo Tolstoy's novella, 'The Death of Ivan Ilych', which grapples with the existential crisis of a man facing his own mortality. Ivan Illych's journey reflects the Torah's exploration of death and purification through its stark portrayal of Ivan's inner turmoil and societal façades crumbling in the face of death's inevitability. Both texts provoke contemplation on the essence of life, the inevitability of death, and the quest for spiritual and moral purity amidst human frailty. On this episode, we hear from Cara Fitzpatrick, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and editor with the national education outlet, Chalkbeat, and the author of "The Death of Public School: How Conservatives Won the War Over Education in America.” That's a provocative title and we unpack that, but Cara helps us understand the origins of education reform movements like school choice vouchers, charter schools and more. We also examine what may be on the horizon in the fight over public schools. And we also discuss why it's so hard to get everyone on the same page about what role schools should be playing in our lives. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

He says the loss of belief in the value of human life is leading to disastrous consequences for society. Peter Singer is an Australian ethicist who believes we should dispense with the concept of the sanctity of human life in favour of a view of 'personhood'. Humans who are less capable of having preferences, such as babies, have less claim to be kept alive. They debate whether this view of humanity is dangerous and Susan Blackmore, atheist psychologist and philosopher also joins the conversation. • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate

Claudia, also known as ‘The Death Faerie', is a spirit medium, death doula, and coach. A fascinating woman who survived an abusive childhood, she moved to England at age three where she hung out in cemeteries and talked to spirits. She sees- or rather feels- faeries, dragons, angels, guides, and aliens and describes how each energy has its own weight and quality. Because of the amount of messages she has encountered in which crossed over loved ones use symbols to communicate, she finally realized that she didn't need to "learn" prescribed systems of knowledge. Instead she created and used her own dictionary of symbols. In their conversation, Claudia helps Eliza make sense of the passing of a loved one years before and reassures her of the role she played in helping his spirit find peace.Find Claudia at: thedeathfaerie.com and follow her on Instagram at: @thedeathfaerie Acknowledgements & Mentions:Pop Culture References: E.T The Extraterrestrial, Eleven (Stranger Things), Nirvana, Sex Pistols, In The Shadows, Ghost, James DeanOriginal interview recorded on April 28, 20228th House Healers Podcast is:Eliza Harris: Owner, Host & Content Creator and Sarah Cole-McCarthy: Owner, Host & Executive Producer/EditorAll rights reserved Podcast webpage: 8thHouseHealers.comWork with Eliza/buy her deck: 8thHouseHealers.com/ElizaWork with Sarah: 8thHouseHealers.com/Sarah We'd love to hear from you! We discuss chapters 1-2 of Janice Hallett's bizarre media-meta-fiction 'Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels'. Journalist and true crime author Amanda Bailey is on the hunt for a new story. Her editors put her onto the case of the Alperton Angels, a perplexing cult-suicide from the early 2000s involving ritual sacrifice and a missing baby. As Amanda begins to work through her wishlist of interviewees for the novel, her old arch rival Oliver Menzies shows up investigating the same case, and the two are forced to work together on the tapestry of conspiracy behind the case. We see the case through the text logs and transcripts of conversations as the narrative is sculpted out in the atmosphere between the hard journalistic fact. In the spirit of strange structures, we're joined by author Ben Hobson to talk about his etched-in-stone Aussie-Outback-western 'The Death of John Lacey', and the motivating factors behind both his narrative choices, and how threatening the reader with a thoughtfully off-kilter structure can impact the feel of a book. There is something of a Francis Bacon season going on here at Hatchards, with 'Bacon in Moscow' chosen as our non-fiction Book of the Month, multiple new releases across various genres covering the artist's work, and a new exhibition entitled 'Man and Beast' across the road at the Royal Academy. In this episode, we invited author Max Porter ('Lanny,' 'Grief is the Thing With Feathers') and the author and art curator James Birch ('Bacon in Moscow') to discuss the life and works of the famed 20th-century figurative artist. Mr. Birch first met Bacon when he was a little boy, and maintained a close relationship with him until the end of his life. In July of 1986, he successfully curated an exhibition of the artist's work in the former USSR, allowing more than 400,000 Soviet citizens to view Bacon's work for the first time. Mr. Porter's devotion to Bacon's work began when he was a teenager, and he spent the better part of the 2020 national lockdown writing an imagined memoir about the last days of the artist's life. The resulting novella, 'The Death of Francis Bacon,' is an extraordinary series of six "written pictures" transmuting Bacon's unsettling imagery into the written word. Both of these authors' fascinating new books can be purchased in signed, exclusive editions in the shop and on our website.Hosted by Ryan Edgington and Matt Hennessey.
